  • Want to be able to hold and hand feed your pet monitor lizard? In today's video I'll be teaching you the methods/taming tips I have been using to train my green tree monitor lizard named Sabzi! We'll go over several different food motivated techniques I have been using to interact with my pet lizard in the reptile room that have led to the conditioning/relationship I have with this animal today!
    Hope you enjoy!

    Impressive how you’ve pretty much taught him to lose his natural fear of you. The fact he won’t be getting stressed simply from your presence, means he’ll live longer and be healthier. The interactivity is just the icing on the cake.

    Ok so it’s really stellar Sabzi jumping onto your hand for food, but I’ve also noticed you move slightly to block his continued movements forward, (just a slight change of thumb placement to go in front of his head) subtly directing him back into his enclosure, he gets it right away, spins a nut, and hops back into his house with his treat. Now THATS impressive!!

    I love that you train using classical conditioning and positive reinforcement as so many other reptile taming videos are basically just forcing them which I don't agree with. I've been thinking of doing target training with my skink and leopard gecko to get them more used to handling!
    I'd also love to see a video on reptile enrichment, I think that would be wonderful 😊

    It must be really heart warming to have your tree monitor react to you entering the room in the way that he does. I appreciate experiencing that from you. Thank you buddy, superb content as always
    Bye the way I agree with you that it's sooo much better to wait till the animal chooses to come to you rather than forcing them to be handled. It builds trust in a way that nothing else can and is the number one way, in my opinion, to earn that valuable trust

    Hi congratulations on your acquisition, it's a beautiful monitor. If I may make a few suggestions which you probably have already done I'm new to this channel. If you haven't already done this, I'd introduce isopods to his environment to help with waste management , although he's a small monitor in stature, I'd use the tongs to feed him. I know food is a great motivator in the socialization process, once he's an adult accidents do occur and it's best not to have the scents of food items on your person. Try not approach him from above, this simulates the movement of predators. Cameras and cellphones seem to distract monitors and other reptiles. Monitors especially pay great attention to our eyes and those of predators, lenses probably look like eyes to them, I can't be sure but it seems to distraction them. Calcium and D3 supplements are important as you probably know this already. I'm no expert by any means but I thought I'd share a few things that have helped me. I'm looking forward to watching him grow. His enclosure is brilliant great job.🦎

    • @Reptiliatus
      @Reptiliatus  3 роки тому +7

      I know! Once in a while he gets a frozen thawed pinky mouse and he also likes canned grasshoppers and silk worms or a bit of scrambled egg. He won’t touch anything else but I’m told they become more open to other prey items as they grow.

    Small monitors are so cool. The downside to them being tame enough to handle is their claws. Even if they're no actively trying to hurt you, an adult's claws can lay you open. I've cared for V. prasinus, beccari and dumerilii, all handleable, I bled every time one climbed up my arm.

    • @Reptiliatus
      @Reptiliatus  3 роки тому

      Yea it gets bad after awhile unfortunately. I had Sabzi cut my neck trying to climb up my head 😅. I will be talking about this at some point and have already started wearing thicker garments to protect myself.

    I’m a recent fan. The tree monitors are my dream reptile. I’ve had 4 different lizards so far but like you, I want to do it right and that takes time and money. I have bay window in my room. Do you think they would enjoy one side getting natural sunlight next to the window? I plan on building a vivarium with a small tree or similar plant inside it’s enclosure.

    • @Reptiliatus
      @Reptiliatus  3 роки тому

      Thanks for the kind words! There are a few things to consider with this. Firstly, overheating. The sun coming through the window can potentially be dangerous. Secondly as much as it is a natural source of heat, keep in mind that uvb will not penetrate the glass unless it is uv glass which I can almost guarantee it isn’t.

    Completely agree with the age thing! I have lace monitors and once they get to about 1.5-2years old and are 4ft + long they do tend to calm down and become more approachable. However with lace monitors using food for conditioning is NOT ideal haha. Youll lose a finger haha. I cant wait until i can get a green tree monitor!!! I live in australia so they cost 7.5k here for one! i gotta sell a kidney first haha

    He is super. How much is he still gonna grow? Nice what relation you already built up. Can't really tell what trick I liked best; maybe to make him jump or stand for food. I think if you put the glass with a cricket in your hand, he will notice it is food a little earlier, since it will remind him on the other challenge you give him with the cricket in your hand. But yes, maybe a bigger glass, so that his head does not get stuck :D

Did you make sabzi fasting for few days ?? And how long did you trained sabzi to be like this "tame"?? Because i got my macraei may be 2 months (she is juve rn), and i give her food everyday but not really interact that much.. and sometimes i let her walked out of her cage (so i can grab and pet her), but when i pet her..she is still like jumping and when i pet her neck she give me like "fast" movement, but after couple minutes, she is like calm and just chillin on my body...

    You should definitely use tongs, I use tongs with my Savannah monitor, so when he sees the tongs he knows it’s time to eat. But when he sees my hands he knows it’s not time to eat and doesn’t associate my hands with food! Just my opinion to each their own, but like you said in your video, could be dangerous when he is older.
