  • Okuma's Cavalla series of 2 speed reels are an exceptional value, They have many improvements over the models these reels replaced. Most noticeable is the smothness and range of the drag curve, the lever's action is much more linear. We made a large buy, result is savings from over $60 to almost $80. Check CharkBait for special pricing use the search bar for CUSTOM BLUE. www.charkbait.com

    I just bought one of these new Cavala reels , excited to test it out. One note, if you have a deckhand rod check to see if the bolts or bullet nuts are long enough to properly seat the reel. The OEM nuts were a little short and the reel could not be mounted securely. I fortunately was able to swap out to a longer set I had .

    FYI…great reels at great price. Own all 4 sizes. Planned to fish the size 12 as a 60lb rig and the reel bracket won’t fit a size 24 reel seat, which many rods in this class are equipped with. If you like to use the bracket you should be aware of this.

    Wasn't expecting it to still be available but just purchased the 12Nii in the custom blue off the Charkbait website for a ridiculous $270. I got the Cavalla 12Nii, 500m of 60# Toro hollow core, and a darn replacement latch needle for under $360. I don't know how I got an aluminum two speed jigging reel with 24lbs of drag at strike and spooled it with hollow core for $345 but it just happened. I'm in the South East Coast where we fish just a shade differently but getting 300 yards of 60# on a jigging reel makes it very versatile here. I'll fish it at 17-18lbs of drag and I have capacity for just about everything I need it for. We very rarely jig deeper than 400', I can pitch live baits to dolphin, blackfin, the rogue Cobia. Narrow spool even makes it a usable casting piece. Thank you Charkbait. I also got to speak to the man himself, Mark, on the phone for 30 seconds. I couldn't believe they hadn't sold out of the custom blue pieces!

      Shucks Jeff, you should have introduced yourself. Feel like I know you, have much in common aside from last name - we both suffer from same affliction...terminal tackle-itis, the need for new gear! Dandy by on the reel, not many more in our stock...we did buy literally hundreds, almost all gone.

      @@CharkBaitUSA I've been watching your videos and commenting for well clear of a decade now! I actually found out about your shop from a gentleman at a bar just prior to my first long range trip back in 2010 I believe it was. Perhaps 2011. My heaviest outfit, that I brought that is, was a 60lb piece at the time and was completely out of my depth before the trip. Walked into your shop, spent about 45 minutes with an employee of yours and walked out with an Avet 30 that I still use today and an Avet 50 that I gave to my nephew not two years ago. I spent over 2 days at the rail with just those two pieces and landed a 195lb yellowfin on the 50. Been doing a 8+ day long range trip every year since. As long as I can get the wife to approve of! I'd been catching yellowfin in the Bahamas for a couple decades before that trip but had no idea we'd actually target them from a dead in the water boat. Seemed crazy to me! I definitely fit the description of having a gear issue! Never too many arrows in a quiver is my belief! I'll be making some purchases getting ready for my season ahead so I am sure I'll be calling again soon!

      @@CharkBaitUSA just received the 12Nii. First of all, the blue is pretty sweet. With the silver spool and some black thrown in it's a sweet looking piece. More importantly, this reel is solidly built. I can absolutely see this reel fishing 16-18 pounds of drag and having no issues. I realize it's rated higher but I like some wiggle room. Two speed operation is excellent. Free spool even without any mass on the spool is excellent. Plenty of length in the handle for torque. The only thing I could see guys complain about is the clicker being a shade soft but honestly I couldn't care less about a clicker. For under $300 people are stupid not to buy this.

      @Blueskies My Cav 12 holds 475 yards of 65# braid. The reel is paired with a 40-60# Daiwa Proteus rod. I don't intend to push the drag beyond 20#. This is fine for daytime West Coast fishing. You'd get about 350-400 yards of 80# braid on the Cav 12, but I'd recommend against it. The Cav isn't intended for 80# applications such as cow tuna. A Penn VISX or Makaira would be more appropriate for that role.

      Cavalla 12II, more of a 50-60# piece in my thinking. And, yes the Alijos is well worth the money from my thinking. Difference between Alijos 16 and Makaira 16, subjective again but both are excellent 80# reels with the Makaira again being worth the money to my way of thinking. Others certainly can differ based upon their needs and value of the coin to them personally.

      @@CharkBaitUSA interesting. I already own a Mak16SEA. Bought it from you 3 years ago or so and love it. I fish it at 100lbs although I'll drop my topshot down to 80lb if I'm able to. Perhaps I should just spool it with 80 and run a heavier leader if need be. What do you fish as your 80lb setup? My current lineup is an SX Raptor as a 30lb setup, MXL Raptor as a 40-50lb, JX Raptor as my 60lb then I'm empty until the Makaira 16. The JX I love but capacity wise it's limited with 80lb. I then have multiple Mak 30's and 50's as I'm a private boater much of the time. I notice a gap on the 80-120lb fish to me. The Mak16 makes quick work and the JX can get sketchy on a wild one even in a private boat.

      @@CharkBaitUSA People fish the early Avet reels stupidly heavy in my opinion when they're really built for the line classes you're fishing. I see guys fishing 80lb on a standard MXL or SX and then they complain when it's hard to crank with the drag maxed past it's capacity. I think I'm going to spool my Mak16 with 80 and buy a Cavalla 12ii as a 60lb live bait setup. That way I can keep a very short topshot on the JX Raptor and leave it as a jigging piece. I like the Alijos for sure but I don't really need something robust, I've got that covered in spades. Thanks.

    How about a left hand okuma

    • @CharkBaitUSA
      @CharkBaitUSA  Рік тому +1

      Okuma produces most reel series with lefty option - but not all, and n ot all models. They offer more lefty reels than Penn or the bike maker & Daiwa... In the case of Cavalla series, yes they do have some lefty reels in the standard production. These Custom Colored reels do not have that option - were not built because they were not originally ordered in this form (from my understanding). When it comes to lefty reels, you have but two choices that offer a FULL range - Avet and Accurate - both USA made and owned firms. In Asia, there are no lefties, all were "trained" and converted. One of Avet's owners is a lefty, so they were most sensitive to this issue. Avet forced Accurate to re-create their line of reels to true left hand retrieve. These are your full range options, be thankful for that and give them the business if this feature is important to you - it ain't easy and it is a costly option for the manufacturer.

      @@JaimeSanchez lefty Avet’s are no longer offered. They used to be an option @+ $50. No longer an option, silver is the only color option for lefties. Too hard to manage various colors given production demands. The extra time involved makes it impossible. Accurate does provide color lefty option @+$100 which points to the added production costs = time.

      Spinning yes, conventional very much disagree. Tell me how many models of lefty reels the bike maker (shimano) makes? Penn has limited models. The only firms which supply all models in left and right hand retrieve are USA firms, Avet, Accurate and Seigler.
