Thank you. Hopefully your tips will come in handy. Just ordered my first 2 speed waiting for it to arrive next week. Torque II 60. 3 day out of Point Loma at the end of the month. UPDATE: I landed a 177lbs BFT on my 3 day trip with my new rod n reel. FYI, I only used high gear about 10% of the time. He got tail wrapped so I spent 45 minutes winding in 400 yds of line 1-2 low speed turns at a time. Epic trip.
I like to use the low gear bottom fishing for Grouper and Yellowtail. It helps keep the fish out the rocks when they head for the bottom after hookup. Once I think they are away from the bottom I'll shift into high gear and then like Dan says use the low gear again once they are under the boat and need wenching up.
Personally, I enjoy using a 2 speed reel when I go out on the 3/4 day boats, if you are fishing in 300 feet of depth, it's exhausting, I use it every time I hook on to a fish. I am not going to use it just to rebate but whenever the fish is on the hook or doubles, it is very nice to have. You don't technically need it but's you will not regret having it.
Thanks Dan hope to catch up with you on a boat soon beleive the Triton is coming soon My Brothers Father n law had been out a few times with you were hoping to make. Was on Gail force Tuesday and Going on tradition in Sunday. Thanks for the knowledge I'm trying to learn much appreciated
I figured I bought a Penn fathom single speed because I figured I was a beast of a man 💪. Plus I fish Central coast mostly so it would only be once a year that I go south for some game species.
@@cashflow805 update, that penn was crap. After about 10 trips the gears grind. I mostly use a shimano torium 14 on a okuma check and a tsunami forged 10 on an old seeker. I fish Morro Bay or Avilia. One day I will send that penn in for service, but for now it is parked.
im looking to do mainly surf casting and pier fishing, also sharks of the NJ coast. i have a avet mxl and want a larger lx for my 12ft rod. do i need a 2 speed or is a lx 6.0 good enough. thanks.

Dan, with the new Rockfish Regs to begin in a couple of months, we'll need electric reels.
That's what it's starting to sound like.
Does using the second speed change the drag dynamics at all?
How about high speed trolling? Is there a place for them?
What is the best rod to use for the 16s reel? I need help please..... thanks and Happy Sunday. God bless.
There are too many to list here, go visit your local tackle shop.
You killed my fishing dream. I live in Cali and there’s no fish here. Sad.

You don't need a 2 speed reel for that type of fishing.
I think the volume was messed up on this one. I had to turn my speakers way up just to hear what you were saying.
