Nick Valentine is hands down the best character in any fallout game. Nothing will ever compare to the moment you first meet him in the triggerman vault and his synth identity is revealed. I'm glad I got the game early enough to not be spoiled by his appearence, the reveal is extremely well done. Nick is my favourite companion/character in any game. If it weren't for my love for him, I don't think I would've been as sympathetic towards synths. He really opened my eyes and made me realise how they are people just like us.
I feel like the saddest part of Nick is that he doesn't feel like the original Nick trapped in a robot's body, he feels like a robot trapped with another man's memories.
Mike Leahy duude, our Nick from Fallout 4 talking to ghoulified once-human Nick, and synth Nick telling him he killed Eddie and everything that’s happened, god damn-
That would be the coolest thing in the universe. It would've been like meeting a parallel version of yourself, the same person but different people. Old Nick would probably praise Synth Nick for following the path of true justice and being a righteous man in general.
A copy of a person is still a person - he's also had plenty of his own experiences since becoming aware, I'd say even if he wasn't a person, he's still a self-aware AI. This is still enough 'personhood' to count.
When i first met Nick back when FO4 launched, i felt so happy and comfortable around him. Something about him seemed so familiar to me. It was then I realized... He reminded me of my grandfather. My grandfather wasn't a detective, but a marine from WW2. He served as a guard for the first UN General Assembly and from what my grandmother told me, he was personally chosen alongside a few other because of how amazing his posture and how professional he was. He escorted such people as Harry Truman and i remember him telling me "when Harry Truman walked he had a stride to him" My grandpa was honestly the kindest and most amazing person that i ever knew, and losing him in the summer of 09 when i was a Junior in Highschool was hard. He helped support me in music and was always there to love and care for not only his kids, but his kids kids, and so on. RIP Grandpa ❤️ Marine Pvt. John A. Ols
22:50, this is exact reason I love Nick as a character.. "I dont have to be human to understand that sometimes the only way to get rid of evil, is to kill it" - Nick Valentine I honestly feel like Nick is one of the best characters ever fleshed out by Bethesda..
Is Nick a gen 2? I forget, but most gen threes have had their memories wiped or they're brainwashed to the core (looking at you X6-88). I get what you're saying though, he's an independent thinker.

Nick was a huge part of the reason why I didn't join the Brotherhood of Steel in my first playthrough of Fallout 4. His uniquely human swag and style made him really lovable and this made me feel very sorry for all the synths less fortunate than Nick. So then I joined the Railroad. _choo_ _choo_
Techno Badger i joined the bos my first playthrough becuase i thought they were like the fallout 3 brotherhood and i loved them, but not the fallout 4 brotherhood. now im minutemen all the way! united we stand!

@Anne The brotherhood does not help anyone except from themselves, the Railroad's goal is to free all synths, they don't do this just to have something to do. The Minutemen are the Commonwealth's best hope, because they care about it's people, the help and defend them otherwise than the brotherhood. And what happens if Maxson dies? Or if the prydwen gets blown up? And what happens if a settlement of the Minutemen gets raided and destroyed? Then the brotherhood falls apart, the Minutemen doesn't. Nick won't have to accept that the brotherhood is in charge just as the people of the Commonwealth won't have to accept it. They won't bend to their will, the brotherhood won't win this war, the Minutemen will. And your sentence shows excactly what is wrong with the bos: “The brotherhood is in charge“ the Commonwealth does not belong to the brotherhood, the Minutemen don't want to rule it, they want to protect it. You fanatic bos maniacs only want to raid the farm's food for yourself, you're not protecting anyone, you're just raiders with better gear.
Hey Oxhorn, have you ever seen Nick pray while in a church? Because it’s a spiritual sight, he just sits down in an empty pew and bows his head in his folded hands. It’s quiet amazing, which makes me believe that Synths are human, that can actually feel and love. They just have to find their own way, like must of us do in life, but that’s just my opinion. Love your videos man, haven’t been a fan long but I listen to all your lore videos as I work through the day, and I have to say you are one funny, swell hearted man. Keep up the good work Sir.
Is this something that happens???? I'm surprised, I've never seen this in my extensive play throughs. I have noted the times Nick will brace himself on the edge of a desk and hang his head against his chest....
Companions interact with animation places, there is a place of using jet animation in the Drug Den near Bunker Hill and any character you take there will use jet.
I’ve seen Cait do that before. I wasn’t sure if all companions did that, but that was kinda interesting to see after what she’s been through and maybe says a lot about her character. But of course it’s probably just programming for all companions.
In my opinion, there are two types of sarcasm. The friendly sarcasm: 1. Hey, do we have work tommorow? 2. Oh no, there isn't. (Sarcastic) And, the hostile sarcasm. The one Oxhorn described. I personally try to be sarcastic in a friendly manner. Many might disagree with me, but I still believe that there are two types of sarcasm.
Self-Deprecating Sarcasm - This category of sarcasm expresses an overstated sense of inferiority and worthlessness. Brooding Sarcasm - In this criticism, the speaker utters something polite. However, the tone of his speech has a marked bitterness to it. Deadpan Sarcasm - It is expressed without emotion or laughter, making it difficult for the listener to judge whether the speaker is joking or mocking. Polite Sarcasm - A speaker is said to have delivered a polite sarcasm when his listeners only get to realize that his kind remark was a sarcastic one after they had given it some thought. Obnoxious Sarcasm - This kind of sarcasm makes people feel like punching the speaker in the face. It is not very funny, and it gets under your skin. Manic Sarcasm - This type of sarcasm is delivered in an unnatural happy mood, which makes the speaker look like he has gone crazy. Raging Sarcasm - This kind of sarcasm relies mainly on exaggeration and violent threats.
X6-88 is what the institue wants in a Synth. He is basically positive to what helps the insitute and indifferent what isn't even conected to the insitute.
I know he is basically a terminator which makes it interesting to analyze, trying to understand his motives and distinct factors that makes him who he is. But he also does have some distinct behaviors, like he shows some sense of humor and he seems to have a fear of heights as he dislikes it when you board vertibirds. And it’s so funny how he truly freaks out and loses his cool when you jump off heights, like ‘OH MY GOD WHAT THE HELL WHY DID YOU DO THAT ARE YOU NUTS!!!’
That raises a very, very interesting question. Why would a Synth, a Courser at that, invoke God? I really can't think of a less 'Godly' organisation than the Institute and it's not like there are no other ways to swear.
Nicholas Cross I don't think X is invoking God. I think he is just using a colloquial phrase. I don't think it implies a belief in God no more than an athiest saying "oh my God."
i always thought one of the 'relationship' endings should have been you convincing him that he IS the original Nick Valentine, just a continuation thereof. Still think it's a shame that's not possible.
I know. Replying late but just got into it. You can’t even agree to Charlie’s proposition for the good neighbor triggermen he hates. New to video games too, so lol!
Well unless the original nick was sitting in a vault for the rest of his days, I imagine he would be very similar to synth nick, and maybe we would see the differences between the man and the robot.
I adore Nick Valentine, he's easily my favourite companion. Once I get all my companions to max affinity, I always travel with Nick (and Dogmeat, thanks mods!)
the whole "is he a machine or not" question with nick I think is best answered with the "rose" analogy put up in the little prince. In it, the little prince is distraught when he learns there are thousands of other roses just like his rose, but understands when the fox tells him. "Your rose is unique to you. There are other roses, but this is the one that met you, that you loved." not in literal romantic love with nick but with him, there is no other synth detective. Even if we met the nick valentine from pre-war, that nick doesn't have the time spent with us, the laughs and the love we shared with the synth from diamond city.
Nick's memory loss is very easy to explain... the Valentine personality and memory imprint is in protected memory, think BIOS. Only his memories as a synth are limited in how much data can be held 'onboard' at one time, think NVRAM.
When I saw Nick angry with how he didn't feel better, it really made me tear up. Seeing him in such pain that he can't help Nick, because he is Nick. He keeps thinking of Nick as some guy who had died, when he should realize, that, he is Nick. ( 23:20 )
I think an argument can be made that Nick is Nick Valentine. this same thing comes up in the game Soma. what is a man, but his memories, his personality, his world view? sure maybe it can be said that Nick isn't a person if you say he is just a synth with the memories of a dead human implanted in him. but what if we turn that on it's head? what if we instead say he is a former human who was implanted onto a synth? then we can say that he is a person, for while the body vessel is not the same, the one controlling it is. I think that we can say that this is the original Nick Valentine, just in a different body. we can take another angle and say at what point does a human stop being a person. let's say they lose a limb, and it's replaced, either by a prosthetic or transplant. is that person now less a person? I don't think many people would say yes to that. what about another limb? another organ? what if every physical, tangible thing of the physical body is replaced, but is replicated to have the same form and function? neural path ways that store memory, personality. all that has the same structure and serves the same function, but made of something else. is that not still a person? or have they lost personhood because they are no longer in their original body?
Yes! I completely agree! When I saw that part---the "copy and paste" memories (not to spoil too much) in Soma---I couldn't help but think of Nick. After Eddie Winter was defeated, with Nick lamenting that he didn't really feel that much better about who he was despite what we'd done (aka Jenny and Nick-the-human were still dead), I realized that his self depreciation was a human's reaction to being basically implanted into a robot. Whatever occurred during the last 'brain-scanning' session was basically where Nick the synth begins. The human-Nick being lost to time and obscurity. Sure he might not remember everything from his past but that's probably a flaw of his gen2 brain rather than a sign of inhumanity. In that talk with him after Winter's End, I always pick the option "There is no other Nick. Just you." because I feel that is the closest to getting Nick to understand that he truly is Nick Valentine in every way save 'the red blood cells'. It's so sad to me, this tragedy of Nick's search for humanity, that no one encouraged him to see past the "metal bits" to recognize the human still living on in the robot. I think this attitude towards himself comes very much from not only the understandings of robots from that time (i.e protectrons and security bots aren't able to create personalities) and his own selflessness. And I think post-war people were so mired in their own troubles (however rightly so) that they didn't have time or the willpower to lend too much trust to something they considered an 'unliving robot'.The Nick we see trapped in the Vault is one who feels he's fighting a losing battle, who's falling apart inside and out, and who's been stripped of most of his dignity. We can either reaffirm his value, the value of selflessness and honesty, or continue him on the slow path towards destruction by showing him that greed and violence are the creeds of the post-war world. I think that this revelation that even a robot can be completely human is one of the reasons why I gravitated towards Nick so much in the game. I liked learning from him, being reminded of the importance of sentience and compassion over literal humanity. It's such a poignant topic for me, and I'm so thankful for Oxhorn's marvelous video for exploring it. :)
I love that if you're an asshat around Nick, he makes you feel bad purely with intelligence and kindness, like if the Sole Survivor tries to tell him he was only a sideshow to the first town he went to.
A friend sent me this video because of how much I love Nick Valentine. I'll say, I definitely was not disappointed by your character analysis. We read The Tempest my Junior year of high school, so I actually caught that quote from Nick, but I had no idea where the others were from. It was really interesting to me to learn about Nick's affinity for pre-war literature, whether it comes from the flesh and blood Nick or the Nick we know.
i hate nick honestly, the institute is a bunch of dicks. the railroad is full of morons, the brotherhood are a bit mental as well, the minutemen would be perfect if it werent for preston
35:08 its as what the 11th doctor said in his final moments, "we are all different people all throughout our lives, thats good! You got to keep changing: as long as you remember the people who you used to be."

1) “Nick doesn’t like sarcasm”. And yet he is a king of sarcasm and unbeatable convo comebacks. 2) I believe Nick is that one super cool uncle we all wanted. Such a charismatic character. Probably the only character in the game with Charisma points that exceed number 10
I find it funny how he said he has limited memory, he repeated a line twice about me knowing more about him. It's like he never said it before but he did, it even had the faded out voice lines. Strange. Coincidence?
Sometime I feel that a synth like Nick is worthy as a true friends then a actual human friends that you well known for 20 years. Especially in this world we living.
Nick's the only companion I'll travel with, honestly. He as a character means a lot to me and I couldn't see myself tagging along with anyone else. He's a great person and always knows just what to say. Great video! Really dug up some emotions, haha
Why doesn't the Institute continually send coursers after Nick? He is a clear example of synths being their own beings, which is something they don't want to face. Even if Nick predates the third gens and the coursers, they should still want to wipe him out.
Harlee737 they'd use him as an example of synths not being their own beings. They'd say everything he is and everything he's done is just the personality they programmed him with and nothing more.
Probably because Nick is too busy to disappear with no one caring. That or because they don’t see much use in kidnapping or killing him, at the end of the day, he is just another voice saying he doesn’t like the institute
i always think the self ware argument for what makes a human human is flawed. (34:11) who I ask people what makes humans different than other animals besides more developed prefrontal cortex's and as a result higher IQ. They usually say "we are self aware" which is what you just said, the problem I have with that is we have many cases of teaching gorillas sign language(their PFC is only 11% as developed as humans) they show clear signs that they are very self aware. For example this Gorilla named rose really wanted to have a kid, the zoo peeps and scientist told her she was infertile. Rose understood this concept and was sad, they offered her a pet to raise as a kid, she wanted a cat and when they gave her the kitten she named it red ball, after her favorite toy, and she raised the cat as her baby. That shows me that an animal with only 11% of the most "human" part of the brain can be so self aware and understand complex concepts like wanting families and dealing with being infertile, it leads me to wonder how much self awareness does a dog have too. Which is 7% the PFC of humans. cats are 3%, which is why they do way more dumb shit than dogs, and they seem to emotionally connect to humans less. I have always found the Philosophy of the relationship to Humans and animals interesting. my umbers for PFC % of humans came from Daniel Amen neurologist of the Amen clinics CA. Orangutans are the closest to Human PFC development at 34% btw
Did you mean “person”, not “human”? I think it comes down to a matter of a “yes” answer to these questions. A. Can it think for itself B. Can it communicate explicitly? C. (The Big One) Does it understand the concept of death or non-existence? For the last one, you could argue about a human child could not understand death. However it is implied if it could at any point in one’s life. At any rate, your comment is thought provoking.

Nick Valentine is hands down the best character in any fallout game. Nothing will ever compare to the moment you first meet him in the triggerman vault and his synth identity is revealed. I'm glad I got the game early enough to not be spoiled by his appearence, the reveal is extremely well done. You first hear his voice, then you see him in sillhouette through the window, when you approach him you notice his glowing eyes, and then he lights a cigarette, illuminating him in a soft red glow. the cinnmon topography....
"Nick doesn't like sarcasm, especially when it's unkind."
You are aware of his dialogue right after *killing* Skinny Malone, right?
"I wonder if he's lighter with all those holes in him? Probably heavier 'cause of the bullets…"
Mike, from Texas I suppose that was his doing though. In his eyes it’s just a noir quip.
In my experience, Nick is absolutely fine with sarcasm or a funny quip every now and then. It's just all about comedic timing.
Like if you are sarcastic with him, 90% of the time he'll laugh it off. It's just choosing when to do it
^ It seems more like a joke then sarcasm
Mike, from Texas Well, they did seem to have a sort of odd bond. Perhaps it was his way of moving on from it? I know, it sounds wierd.
He also likes it when you're sarcastic with Finn in Goodneighbor if you travel with Nick.
"Nick Valenine, the who cannot be romanced!"

What if we met a ghoul Nick Valentine?
woah.
Mike Leahy duude, our Nick from Fallout 4 talking to ghoulified once-human Nick, and synth Nick telling him he killed Eddie and everything that’s happened, god damn-
I just thought of that
@@gore4332 I think ghouls nick would be proud of him.
That would be the coolest thing in the universe. It would've been like meeting a parallel version of yourself, the same person but different people. Old Nick would probably praise Synth Nick for following the path of true justice and being a righteous man in general.
Mike Leahy woah.....well uhh inception?

People?!?!
A copy of a person is still a person - he's also had plenty of his own experiences since becoming aware, I'd say even if he wasn't a person, he's still a self-aware AI. This is still enough 'personhood' to count.
He may not be human, but he is a person. And definitely more humane than most in the wasteland.
He escorted such people as Harry Truman and i remember him telling me "when Harry Truman walked he had a stride to him"
My grandpa was honestly the kindest and most amazing person that i ever knew, and losing him in the summer of 09 when i was a Junior in Highschool was hard. He helped support me in music and was always there to love and care for not only his kids, but his kids kids, and so on.
RIP Grandpa ❤️

22:50, this is exact reason I love Nick as a character.. "I dont have to be human to understand that sometimes the only way to get rid of evil, is to kill it" - Nick Valentine
I honestly feel like Nick is one of the best characters ever fleshed out by Bethesda..
"I'm just a machine, pretending to be human"
Ahhhh nicky, thats is a self aware thought, you are conscious nick, not even the gen3's have that
I read this comment as while he said that weird lol
That means he is truly a person. He truly is an Android.
Gen 3s have those. Only Gen 1s and 2s dont have consciousness
Is Nick a gen 2? I forget, but most gen threes have had their memories wiped or they're brainwashed to the core (looking at you X6-88). I get what you're saying though, he's an independent thinker.
@@MuhammadFarukh Nick is a bridge between Gen 2 and Gen 3.
In the lore, Dima cant bear Nick getting tortured and tested so he helped Nick escape and wipe his memory.
And also not all Gen 3s are mind wiped. It is voluntary, to hid themselves from tbe institute. There are some who doesnt get mind wiped.
I became a knight and then decided to switch to railroad.
Being a BOS Knight whilst being the general of the minutemen is the best possible action, the railroad is optional but fuck the railroad, the only thing they have good is their op ballistic weave, the minutemen
may be weak, but the people of the Commonwealth, along with good relations with the BOS,can make the world a better place, considering the BOS is very likely to take action if you pick the minutemen ending.

I hate it when I fumble around and get the "Valentine hated that." I'm always like, "oh crap what did I just do wrong?"
It was ironic that a synthetic being ended up as the most human character in the Fallout universe.
Very ironic. There's gotta be some deep philosophy in there somewhere
guess it's that prewar personality

Danse:I can’t believe your replacing me with this....thing.
Oh well that’s being a little hypocritical don’t you think?
In my opinion, there are two types of sarcasm.
The friendly sarcasm:
1. Hey, do we have work tommorow?
2. Oh no, there isn't. (Sarcastic)
And, the hostile sarcasm.
Too bad all you know when you pick the sarcasm option is that you'll be sarcastic.
Here is an interesting challenge for you, try to make a profile analysis for X6-88.
A better challenge would be to make a profile analysis for dogmeat

the whole "is he a machine or not" question with nick I think is best answered with the "rose" analogy put up in the little prince.

Oh fuck.....
Nick's memory loss is very easy to explain... the Valentine personality and memory imprint is in protected memory, think BIOS. Only his memories as a synth are limited in how much data can be held 'onboard' at one time, think NVRAM.
Danse: “I can’t believe you’re replacing me with this thing”

When I saw Nick angry with how he didn't feel better, it really made me tear up. Seeing him in such pain that he can't help Nick, because he is Nick. He keeps thinking of Nick as some guy who had died, when he should realize, that, he is Nick.
( 23:20 )
35:39 - "All those Nick Valentines, all those moments in time, are gone." Like tears, in rain...
Smith Jones nice one
So nick is litteraly the ghost in the shell!

“I can’t believe you’re replacing me with this... thing” so sayeth one born synth to another.
Nick creates new memories Nick has the capability to grow and learn. He is a person in every sense of the word.
Nick’s voice actor kills it with all the roles he has in the game
Why doesn't the Institute continually send coursers after Nick? He is a clear example of synths being their own beings, which is something they don't want to face. Even if Nick predates the third gens and the coursers, they should still want to wipe him out.
Harlee737 they'd use him as an example of synths not being their own beings. They'd say everything he is and everything he's done is just the personality they programmed him with and nothing more.
That would make a nice short story
Don't make me shut you up.
What about DiMA he developed his personality from his own experiences like a regular person
Probably because Nick is too busy to disappear with no one caring. That or because they don’t see much use in kidnapping or killing him, at the end of the day, he is just another voice saying he doesn’t like the institute
I will never forget listening to these character profiles as I painted my deck, you really helped me get through that tedious task. Thanks oxhorn
i always think the self ware argument for what makes a human human is flawed. Orangutans are the closest to Human PFC development at 34% btw
nice comment! this is one of my favorite subjects, too. have any books to recommend?
Did you mean “person”, not “human”? I think it comes down to a matter of a “yes” answer to these questions. A. Can it think for itself B. Can it communicate explicitly? C. (The Big One) Does it understand the concept of death or non-existence? For the last one, you could argue about a human child could not understand death. However it is implied if it could at any point in one’s life. At any rate, your comment is thought provoking.
@@DigitalRRS based on those parameters you could argue some religious humans are not people because they can not conceive of non-existence
