I'm planning to write a story about Old Man Chosen One having a late life crisis, getting in the Highwayman and going on a wasteland road trip where he meets and recruits the other Fallout protagonists who are still alive for his adventure, visits the other wastelands that we've played in, and meets the factions. This will totally be what he says when he gets into the Railroad.
*Deacon took me aside in the middle of the classroom in diamond city. Im sure his secret is safe with me, the children, that teacher and that robot that married the teacher.*
Piper pulled me aside when we were in the middle of the Boston Commons, and Nick in the middle of Fort Hagen. They don't have a very good reading of their surroundings, do they? At least Danse was smart enough to pull me in the Prydwen
Two facts I noticed about Deacon and they weren't mentioned. First fact: During time spent in Dugout Inn, Deacon should somehow trigger an interaction with Vadim where Vadim referes to him as "mysterious John Doe". Second fact: No barber or any surgital reconstruction will change the color of your eyes. I believe that might be the major reason why does Deacon always wears sunglasses.
"Deacon and Curie are the only ones who we could have a conversation about something Shakespearean" Isn't Shakespeare like...Strong's only personality trait?
I learned Shakespeare in my first year of high school witch was last year at this point I still had a dead boring teacher I know Shakespeare wrote plays and made words but it’s SOOOOO boring if anyone is studying Shakespeare I feel sorry for you unless you like it
I first saw him in diamond city as a guard. I was like "no head gear he must be important" Then again in good neighbor, spammed X to confirm, same voice, same lines, same order, and he said "nothing more to say" 200 times from my spam. I see him alot in main story mission backgrounds and just t bag him to assert my dominance. Deacon you coward, I see you, i know you have something more to say. Oh, he's a companion now. Ok
I remember one time going straight to Deacon’s hiding spot outside the vault and leaving my Vault 111 jumpsuit on the chair to signal that I knew Deacon was following me and that I was on to him. I know this doesn’t change the gameplay any, but I enjoyed doing it nonetheless.
She was traumatized so much by the LW making fun of her that she ran away to Pinkerton, got a sex change and created the Railroad to forget of his childhood love: Maccready. And that's the story of Deacon.
Deacon is one of my favourite companions in the game. His story is great and in the early stages when he lies it's to help train the Sole Survivor not to take everything at face value.
Man, I love the idea of Deacon being disappointed in MacCready, having known him as a genuine leader when he was young, and MacCready being resentful of Deacon because he’s seen him come and go under so many different masks, alluding to the Lone Wanderer being a bit of a wildcard, joining many different groups, then just leaving.
I actually assumed he 'saved' his memories in the Memory Den so that, when his body got too old or damaged, he could go out, grab a raider or something and wipe their minds. Then he could upload his own personality into them and continue the 'Deacon Legacy'. It would explain how he could be a ghoul or a woman after these 'surgeries', and why he knows so much about pre and post war America. He could potentially have been 'around' since before the bombs dropped, and I personally thought he was military trained in espionage. What better way to learn how to technically gain immortality than with the military that we know conducted terrible but highly profitable experiments?
I think that he worked with the D.I.A., which trained him in use of the stealth boy. He worked in the switchboard, the underground location of which shielded him from the blast, allowing him to ghoulify. This explains his affinity to being underground. Since he was a member of the military, he knew of the posidon oil rig, which led him to the west coast, where he worked with the enclave, until wandering west. Here, around 2210, he settles at university point and begins rolling with the deathclaws. After the broken mask incident they start harrassing possible synths, eventually killing someone. He leaves, meets Barbara, and they marry. His past catches up with him, and the deathclaws kill Barbara. He kills the other deathclaws, and now, just before 2030, he changes his body at the Memory Den and starts the Railroad. Every few years going forward, he kills a raider and switches into their body. He keeps this up for nearly 60 years until you emerge from Vault 111, when he begins project "Wanderer".
Flyin43 Anyways, I think he’s a synth but simply ain’t got the component in his inventory. Just as you can’t steal his eyeglasses you can’t check his head for a synth component. (Believe, I fucking killed him).
The more of fallout 4 you cover the more I like the game. I probably would never spend this much time looking through the game for stuff like this but Im glad you do. Makes the game feel more. Alive. Im replaying it now. Never actually beaten it but this time i will. Thanks OX.
I think Deacon recognising our achievements is the best part of the game. Normally, in Bethesda games, most quests make us “start from nothing”, almost no one recognises our achievements outside of their own quest, everyone thinks we’re a nobody. Whatever you want to be, you have to follow an almost strict path, even if the final mission is good. Deacon says that you’re a big deal, not because you followed a specific path, but because you’ve accomplished impressive things and, because you need to contact the railroad to enter the institute, every player is gonna experience this moment at some point.
My favourite quotes are "I'm thinking, next time I go to town. I'll dress up as a Mr. Handy, if I can pull that off, I'd be a legend" and "I think of Super Mutants as... toddlers on steroids."
I like Deacon. He is the chillest companion. Even when you get him to the point of leaving you and stop letting you take him with you. He is the most understanding because of his past.
Ox, i want to apologise, is have been commenting in a lot of you’re videos that you should do a profile of Deacon. So when i saw the notification that you made it, i have been cheering for 5 minutes. I’m also amazed that you had the skill to make it over an hour long, impressed. Deacon is by far my favourite companion, you have profiled him the best you have could, thank you from the deepest of my heart, good sir.
@@alexhuman7749 John Doe is an american term for an unidentified/unidentifiable corpse. Jane Doe is the female equivalent term. It fits Johnny D/Deacon well as the theme of obfuscation and mystery. Interesting that he'd go from using a common stand-in for a dead person, and then next pick a religious name like 'Deacon'. What next? John 'Undertaker'? J. 'Graves'? 'Rot' D.?
At first when you said he could be a ghoul, I was all like "Nah his voice is too smooth, all ghouls voices are raspy." then I remembered Dean Domino, whos voice hasnt changed what so ever since the bombs dropped. So, now Deacon being a ghoul is more convincing to me
35:38 considering how much work you put into this, I'm impressed that you actually missed that detail. The asterisk is later answered by Deacon himself on that very same terminal, where he says that IF he were a time traveler, then would he be in a timeline where Tinker Tom actually knows about him being a time traveler?
yes. eitherway, yes. either there is a version of him in every timeline, as it should be, or he would suddenly disappear. and no, making him not thinking that he is is not necessary, because who would believe that guy. infact, that would be the perfect lie for his character to make people disbelieve in that theorie. like he could have fooled you rn.
I seriously doubt that Deacon is the sole survivor of Vault 11. my guess is that Deacon got his stories about the West Coast from people who migrated from there. Personally, I think it's better to assume that Deacon is his own original character instead of being another character from a previous game, or in previously told Fallout lore. With how serious he became after you reached maximum affinity with him, I think his last story has got to be the truth. I do doubt that he's actually the "founder" of the Railroad, I think he's just another member who just so happened to rise in the ranks. I will not ignore the possibility that he might be from the Capital Wasteland though. He's familiar with how the Brotherhood used to be under Elder Lyons, and he's familiar with other things as well.
Oxhorn oxhorn my question is to you why is Kellogg still the same age and looks the same when Sean our father is much older then after all these years shouldn't be like old as well
The asterisk on Tinker Tom's terminal is on the next page. It says: "If I really were a time traveler would I let a timeline exist where you knew I knew? -D"
My belief is that Deacon (including Johnny D) is just a code name. Each Deacon would choose an apprentice, and when he dies, the apprentice would pick up the torch and become the next Deacon. That easily explains the face changes, including the ghoul and sex change. Plus, Des says that everyone has a code name when we first enter the railroad, and with a compulsive lair like Deacon, it's hard to believe that he doesn't have a code (or fake) name. So the first Deacon founded the railroad, and after that, it's been different "Deacons" passing on the torch of this Railroad founder, trained in cloak and daggers, pretending to be the real founder. They have to lie from the start because they're not the real Deacon, so that's why they lie so much, because they have to.
I've never played Fallout 4 and sided with the Railroad but I love Deacon as a companion. I accidentally dropped my controller and it pulled out a gun which went off shooting thankfully into the sky and not at anyone but Deacon said: " How very Wild West of you." That made me laugh so much.
What if Pinky is Horace Pinkerton? A very old man in fallout 3, an unrivaled surgeon, and he had at least some ties to the railroad as he did the facial reconstruction on Harkness. The Railroad does compartmentalize, so it could be.
Johnny Doe is for children so maybe Johnny D was his nickname when he was child and was always with different faces (make up probably) and different cloths, spying on them from the shadows and bushes so the other kids called him Johnny D 😃
The last conversation with Deacon i always thought he was telling the truth. Before knowing all of this history ...Why? Because how he reacts when you say/imply he is lying. It never bothers him before this if you call him out for lying, he chuckles and says yeah you caught me. I had ya going..etc... However if you do so this time(when talking about his deathclaws past/wife) he gets visibly/clearly upset.
I actually imagine all of Deacon's stories are true in part, but not necessarily about him. Now here's a theory, Deacon is a title that is passed down, like the Dread Pirate Roberts. That's how he's been around for decades one Deacon retires and a new one takes his place having adopted his mannerisms. His story of the UP Deathclaws, all true but then he was recruited by the old deacon who trained him to be the new Deacon.
"Alright dude, so. Just be as sarcastic as possible, first. Ooze that stuff like rads from a Glowing One. Second, lie. Lie about lying. Lie if you're telling the truth. Third, if you don't wanna get punched in the face, hide a dress in Glory's closet every so often. She prefers floral pattern, but eh, sequins are fine too. Oh, and lastly; you can't trust everyone."
Deacon always tells the truth, bar one lie. That he's a liar. Because an actual liar would never tell you that they are a liar. I think he was recruited and trained by Johnny D. who was the one that found him after Barbera died and he killed the UPD, and he gave him the code name of Deacon. Oh, by the way, a Deacon used to be the person in a church whose job it was to give charity to the less fortunate. Then Deacon took the place of Johnny D. after he died, possibly, but there is the terminal entry that says that Johnny D. took to calling himself Deacon.
What this video made me realise: when it comes to single player fallout, Bethesda could match obsidian on depth and characters. Just not the main story xD
casey it’s okay but it’s overused “trying to find missing family member” it’s just a bit overused ya know? Not that it’s bad just not as good in my opinion, I’m open for feedback!
Tbh I think it beats Obsidian in story telling. I never got nearly as immersed with NV, and like the part with the nuke dropping at the beginning of fallout 4, I mean wow. It was genuinely terrifying. I feel like people just overlooked fallout 4 because the main story was a little cliche and all the amazing attention to details and character depth required the player to take their time and explore their environment. Which doesn’t seem like something people were doing.
@Samueldedieu yeah I played NV. Got pretty bored of it though. Just felt too bland, every character was 1 dimensional with hardly any development, and if I’m being honest I didn’t care about anybody so why would I bother trying to help with the main story? Eventually I just kinda fucked around doing side quests and stopped playing.
@Samueldedieu well uh... if that’s your opinion then go ahead, but you seem to be under the impression your opinion is the objective view and anyone with a dissenting view is just trolling...
@@rosepetals2140 You have to put multiple outfits in his inventory at a time and pick the one you want. If that doesnt work try installing a mod that fixes that or something lol
It's interesting that the phrase he gives you is "you can't trust everyone", *not* "you can't trust anyone". The latter is a more common phrase, and a natural attitude for someone like Deacon to have. But the former leaves open the possibility that you *can* trust someone.
If you think about it, deacon knows about prewar stuff, and its called the railroad and frees synths, slaves. Not many people would know of the underground railroad after all that time but maybe deacon did?
"John D." could be John Doe, as it would seem that after his wife died, he may have lost a part of himself the way Kellogg did after his wife died. Vadim calls Deacon John Doe as well. EDIT: Time out. There's a "Johnny D" and he's one of the Atom Cats
I think that Deacon has led so many life’s that all the back story’s he’s had to create for his different personality’s have taken a tole on him, because when he gets a new face he has to create a new story for that person he’s become. He probably heard story’s from travellers or read content in books to build his backstory’s. You have to believe the lie for it to be true. Maybe that’s why it’s tricky to find out which past is actually his.
I would say that just based on his southern California accent that he's got would be a pretty good guess as well that he's definitely been to the west. Honestly it's one of the funnest parts of his character is just the way he talks.
@@Mitchy-qw8no I mean, give deacons extensive knowledge it's not impossible that he could know that! All Walmart wont be destroyed in the war. Or is Walmart mot canonical in this universe?
So I was just taking my character to visit the 'Pillars of the Community' and Deacon was with me. I managed to catch him saying "I miss the Old World". I mean that could be taken abstractly as everyone has good reasons to miss it whether they were there or not, but for Deacon to state it so flatly? His delivery is almost to himself, and next to the other strangeness concerning him and time I suspect he might even have been alive before the bombs himself, even if he acts like he wasn't when speaking to the player about it directly. I'm probably overthinking it. Deacon's probably just more aware of what things were like back then from books. Yeah.
Weston Parker I'd start loving them now, cause Fallout 76 won't have any NPCs. I really like companions mostly because of their personality and history. I'm a stealth build so using them isn't very good for me.
Angry Goose no HUMAN npcs. There’s still the possibility that a robot, ghoul, supermutant, or animal companion. If there were no npcs there wouldn’t be any enemies or characters other than players.
Legionary Well I imagine there will be raiders and npc enemies, but I doubt companions really will exist in Fallout 76. Since its a devoted multiplayer game, Bethesda is going to encourage co op gameplay, and if there are companion npcs they probably won't be too fleshed out. We will have to wait and see but I'm weary. What really gets me about this game is of course the multiplayer experience, and the fact that they will cram Rust like gameplay into Fallout but also have a neutered pvp system that eliminates stealth or even evil/raider playthroughs through their wimpy "softcore" combat.
Actually, you do find the footnote on the next page. It's a note from Deacon signed '-D' saying 'If I really were a time traveller would I let a timeline exist where you knew I knew? -D'
@@rokkfel4999 i'm not entirely convinced ol' Garvy isn't a synth..he always magically knows when a settlement needs your help, can update your pip boy remotely when a settlement is attacked EVEN if you don't have the minutemen radio station up yet, and he's always walking around...like, i've never seen him use a bed in sanctuary the entire time i've played fallout 4
You have to realize something. Deacon is NEVER talking to the Sole Survivor. Deacon is the only one really talking to the player themselves. Go back to the dialogue in this video. It's all for the player. He understands he's a mere traveling companion. He has an idea that you know the events of Fallout 3 but insists that the BOS has changed since then. He understands that you've been putting out fires and solving issues like a cop for the Minutemen. He makes references to past games like New Vegas. He especially talks to YOU the player at 24:54. He'd like for you to side with his faction, but understands that it's up to you, ultimately. His lie of the code locks out a feature for the player until he can get you to do what he wants, because it's your choice, your player choice. He'll also keep track of your accomplishments in the game.
From what I remember it doesn't lock you out if you don't read the code, I passed a skill check after calling him out on his bullshit a couple times which makes him admit he was lying about it. But I did notice when playing through Cabot's quest that if you're hiding behind something and waiting to get a good view of the enemies, he'll come up to you and say things like, "I got you, go", "Go on, I'm watching your back" which surprised me because no other companion had said that to me before
not all of youtube viewers are fallout fans , plus he is the biggest fallout channel out there and made me go from liking fallout series to love them . i think bethesda needs to hire him as a lore master or writer .
Deacon opening up and being honest (or at least what sounds like honesty) about how he got invited to The Railroad reminds me of how Boone opens up in New Vegas. This guy who has built a wall around who he is finally opens the gate that’s been rusted shut for years, and rewards you for helping him do so.
"hey, sole survivor. i... i killed a person." said deacon as he killed another raider. "really? i could never do that." answered the sole survivor, wiping a scavenger's blood off his boots. also, if deacon's wife was a synth and she wasn't aware of it, wouldn't that mean someone had to erase her memories? if railroad didn't exist yet, who did it?
I love how in fantasy worlds killing people is just so casual, even if it's out of self-defense, but if someone in real life tells you they killed someone most people would be like "You WHAT?!"
Fantastic video dude, you cleared up many of my questions about the character. I was so pissed off that i couldnt romance Deacon that i contacted the voice actor via instagram and he replied back apologising on behalf of Deacon haha
@@banessuperbrutalmetalfunti2561 there should be a mod where you're able to romance Nick on Xbox one and PC. I think Bethesda was thinking about adding his romance but didn't. Bethesda really sucks at what the fans want sometimes
Could "Pinky" not be Pinkerton FROM the Captiol Wasteland? If Deacon did start the Railroad, he would have definitely been aware of Pinkerton who was providing facial reconstruction for a synth. What if he recruited Pinkerton on one of his ops in DC? Perhaps Deacon saw his talent for helping synths by completely reconfiguring them. Of course this would be valuable, but Pinkerton being a hermit and recluse would clearly not be a fantastic leader. He would much prefer to mind his own and not create any sort of ruckus to get attention. He would naturally butt heads with the leadership of the Railroad that wanted to become a powerful force. The Fallout Wiki itself only states that Pinky eventually stepped down as leader, but not that he was killed. It would make sense that Pinky remained in the Commonwealth as a valuable asset to the Railroad, despite not being a great leader. This would also explain how Deacon is able to so frequently able to get facial reconstruction. This doesn't explain the supposed immortality of Deacon...but lest we forget the Cabot family..living just down the road? A man of Deacon's abilities; it would not be out of the realm of discovering the truth of the Cabot family.
Except if you look into it, Pinkerton has a fully fleshed out backstory. He founded Rivet City, stayed on the council for many years, and then left to live in the bowels of the ship after an argument, where we meet him ourselves. Unlikely that he had time to lead the Railroad in the Commonwealth and lead Rivet City in the Capital Wasteland at the same time.
When you said "B" movie I thought you were talking about a different type of B movie. Was scared Todd Howard tried to slip in some sort of Bee movie Easter egg.
Mabye Pinky is Pinkerton from fallout 3 and that was how Deacon changed faces??? The railroad tries to save synths, and what did Pinkerton do? SAVE A SYNTH *spoliers below* Harkness's Memories even got changed like the railroad helps with sometimes.
"deacon and curie are the only ones who could have a conversation about shakespere" excluding you know, nick valentine, someone with prewar memories and a ton of literary references.
or the old ghoul shop lady in goodneighbor that litterally said she loved the library? who else if not a frequent library goer would know shakespere...
It would explain the constant face changes and his dialogue of having his current look for too long. Maybe his surgeries don't last and his ghoul look would seep through
In 2017 Tod Howard said: There are still easter eggs, hidden things in FO4 that nobody has discovered. August 2018: Has @Oxhorn uncovered one of those eggs? Amazing, in depth and so, so Ox. Even for you this is an amazing piece of work. You said yourself you knew telling Deacons story would be complex & difficult but you excelled yourself.
Was honestly contemplating that very thought during the video. Glad I’m not the only one that thought that when Ox put things together. Very easy to skim over some lines of text like that without analyzing it, or linking to other info. Great work!
Would you indulge me in a little experiment? There is one lie in this post, can you guess what it is? I caught a shark with my bare hands. I sailed a 3 masted schooner through two seas. I flew across a city at about 1,000 ft. off the ground. I shot someone, from the hip... in the butt. I led a group of schoolkids out of some caves. I had a job in total darkness. I had a job dealing with toxic chemicals. I ate a whole Pavlova. I blew up a shed with hairspray. I hand-fed a giraffe. I was shot with a bow and arrow. I've never missed with a shotgun.
First of all Ox you did a great job, this must have been time really consuming and hard but you managed to pull it off. Deacon is a really Interesting character and I don't think we'll ever truly know who he is, I wouldn't want him to be my friend if he lived in our world but in the fallout universe I wouldn't mind, he lies a lot but he's not entirely a bad person, he's super devoted to the railroad and he even suggests helping farmers and people who need it and at the same time recognizes the flaws of the railroad and he risks everyone by putting a lot of trust on the sole survivor (which it can lead them to destruction of course). And I like his personality a lot, he's charismatic and sarcastic but cool, his VA Ryan Alosio did a great job on Deacon. Anyways thanks for making this video! I enjoyed it a lot
Zerakiel or if he shows up with the same face but looking way older then we will know he's human And would make sense that he founded the railroad 20+ years ago instead of 60/70
I really feel that Deacon is supposed to represent the player from Fallout 3 and Fallout NV. Both games have a huge emphasis on leveling your speech, and you can lie your way out of almost anything, and do a lot of deceiving in the DLC, or talk people down from risky shit.
33:08 Oxhorn's "What if" rant here gives off an impression of the Always Sunny man with his hand on the Pepe Silvia conspiracy board. It's really fun listening to Oxhorn trying to get a grasp on Deacon.
The writing in this game is simply incredible. And all anyone ever mentions is the old meme of "Another settlement needs your help." I think it's particularly telling that Deacon doesn't seem to like it if you try to comfort him after his confession about Barbara. He's not asking for forgiveness. He's trying to make sure you never need it. Hence all of the lessons. He can see that you're being a bit of a soft pre-war idealist for picking the Railroad in the first place rather than one of the stronger factions, and he's trying to make sure you don't fall in with a bad crowd as a result of that naivety. You can tell he's ancient because he acts like some kind of sarcastic sage of wisdom for your benefit. You're basically a kid in his eyes.
side note; Helping Settlements? best thing that a war veteran accomplished after loosing his wife and kid, any other people would have ran into a path of vengeance destruction and blood, the pain would not stop even after killing Kellog or The Father. Helping those settlenents was one of the most decent and fullfilling things Nate or Nora got from all their suffering, bet you that by the ending of Fo4 attop of that building preston came and said "General, anoth-" and the SS told him "Say no more" and happily acepted..
LOL Or what passes for it Bethesda is infamous for lore gaps. Look at what they did with Jet. It was created by a kid named Myron after the war in Cali in Fallout 2. Then Bethesda threw that out the window. Probably because they couldn't be bothered/didn't have time to write in Jet only appearing in post war sites. Still, they're better at lore than quests. Though that is not really saying much.
Why the hell would I trust a slimy, sleazy teenager that he invented the most popular drug in the wasteland, and didn't just stumble upon the recipe by luck or just managed to replicate it?
Wasteland Seven Whenever Bethesda uses lore, they should either check a wiki or watch an Oxhorn video. They're wasting a hell of a resource if they don't.
I must go out of my way to say that I thoroughly and genuinely enjoy every video of yours that I have watched so far. This one, being one of my favorites! From finding the evidence to back up all of your theories, to your storytelling-sounding voice, you are quickly becoming one of my favorites to watch when I need insight or to pass the time. Thank you! 😊
It would make sense that deacon is a ghoul. Deacon would have ghoul eyes if he was but he doesn’t ever show us his eyes. Never taking off his sunglasses he hides them
You keep saying that Silver, it's not true and even covered in the video. He does NOT have SYNTH PARTS. Peace. I've played through as institute and verified myself. And Ox does it. Why are you saying this?
Man, hearing deacon saying all this stuff makes me think that the Railroad was supposed to only be a minor faction but they just didn’t have enough time to include another big faction. It forced their hand in bumping the railroad up
My interpretation of Deacon is a little different. I think some of his stories are total lies, especially in his idle chatter. So I don't give much credit to him being from out west or having been to Greenland. Based on his reactions if you damn him in his last conversation, just how... hurt he seems, how even he's willing to point out you may think its bullshit, I don't think he lies at all in the last conversation. Also, Deacon is likely Johnny D as he and Johnny bear a lot of similarities. He and Johnny were the only ones willing to go to previously raided Railroad HQ's to gather old intel. He and Johnny D both supported the use spycraft in the Railroad. Both have a love of secrets and get on the nerves of their superiors. Plus Deacon is the only one outside of Desdemona to know the "Big Secret" that no one in the Railroad knows about it's history before Wyatt's leadership. Here is my Timeline for Deacon assuming everything he tells you in his last conversation is true, and that he is actually Johnny D: I think Deacon was born in the region of the Commonwealth, joined the Deathclaws, and left them sometime before 2266. He's probably in his late forties assuming this timeline is correct, as the earliest I can imagine he'd leave the Deathclaws in his late teens. He likely got married to Barbara in his early 20's and spent some time with her, only for her to be murdered by the Deathclaws. He did not found the Railroad but was recruited during Agamemnon's leadership Pre-2266, where he took the name John D and acted as a runner for the Railroad. He survived the raid of the Railroad HQ under Agamemnon's leadership and helped when Wyatt took over. He helped build the system of compartmentalization and dead drops that the Railroad uses today. He changed his name to Deacon after Wyatt's death and was kicked out of HQ in 2275 During Pinky's leadership. Pinky didn't seem to have an appreciation for spycraft and seemed to move a lot of Synths without much tact, claimed "This slow crap hurts more than it helps." Obviously didn't work in the long run. I think it'd be safe to put Deacon's ops in the Capitol Wasteland during this period. As he isn't mentioned in the logs of the Railroad until Desdemona takes over in December of 2277. Deacon likely sees the events of Fallout 3 occur starting in August 2277 and leaves the Capitol Wasteland after Project Purity is activated given he knows that DC has clean water. It's entirely possible that the main plot of Fallout 3 takes place over a month or so. I also like to think hearing about the Lone Wanderer is what inspires Deacon to start his op, Project Wanderer. After this Deacon returns to the Commonwealth by December of 2277 when Trinity Tower is lost, Pinky steps down, and Desdemona takes over. He rejoins HQ and helps reinstitute the old compartmentalized structure and dead drop system, along with helping Desdemona develop the rail sign system. Deacon eventually gets sick of the over reliance on P.A.M.'s to find the Institute and begins his own investigation. He begins tracing Institute sightings for the past several decades and in 2286-2287 discovers the sighting of Kellogg and the Institute outside of Vault 111. He likely researches the Vault and comes to the conclusion that one day someone may exit the Vault and begins staking it out. He calls this Project Wanderer, likely after the Lone Wanderer of Fallout 3, which shows Deacon may hold the belief that a Vault Dweller may be the help the Railroad needs. A wild card that will change their fortunes. Deacon likely bolts from Vault 111 as soon as the Vault door opens on October 23, 2287 and begins staking out the most likely places a Vault Dweller would end up: Diamond City, Goodneighbor, and Bunker Hill. He begins gathering as much intel as possible on the Sole Survivor with plans to recruit them. The Sole Survivor walks the Freedom Trail and meets the Railroad, at which point Deacon advises Desdemona to recruit them, which allows him to move on to the next stage of Project Wanderer.
Deacon: this guy is a good person to have on our side Me, knowing I’m eventually going to shoot all of them to death with the brotherhood: _yeah, uh... sure_
The only bad thing about him is gameplay related, with his habit of switching outfits, don't put him in power armor or you will find him randomly wearing just the frame when he tries to switch clothes he unequips all the power armor pieces....
I've literally binge watched all of the fallout 4 vids you have created like a TV series almost for me while I've been ill and can't play the games at the moment thank you for the content
I think Deacon lies with his words and appearance constantly, over and over. But he doesn't lie with his feelings or actions. If he tells you something the factual information is bullshit, but the emotion and purpose behind it isn't.
Deacon is the M'aiq of Fallout 4. A mysterious figure who seems to be everywhere and is a compulsive liar with no single obvious backstory. He also references being very, very old
I always liked Deacon. I have a crush on the guy who plays him in FO4, base solely on his voice and sense of humor. Hope he makes his way into Wastelanders some day and we can team up. Great work, Oxhorn!
My personal head canon : Deacon is a former player character who has played all the timelines and is now interested in seeing how someone else (you) will act, so he used console commands to place all the different versions of him around the commonwealth to keep track of you
Isn't his design kinda close to that pic of a "time traveller" wearing shades in like a 1920s pic or something conspiracy theorists showed around a few years ago...? Like maybe that was the time travel reference/joke?
AHA! Found an article: forgetomori.com/2010/fortean/time-traveler-caught-in-museum-photo/ Actually 1940s but meh. And I'm sure he's not a time traveller. Merely an historian who investigates major historical events in contemporary time...

@@yeet-jy4cz And now he's going to take your body
That explains him not being a stnth but being 60+ years ild

I think Deacon recognising our achievements is the best part of the game.
Normally, in Bethesda games, most quests make us “start from nothing”, almost no one recognises our achievements outside of their own quest, everyone thinks we’re a nobody. Whatever you want to be, you have to follow an almost strict path, even if the final mission is good.
Deacon says that you’re a big deal, not because you followed a specific path, but because you’ve accomplished impressive things and, because you need to contact the railroad to enter the institute, every player is gonna experience this moment at some point.
Honestly, Deacon would make a great Silver Shroud.

These are all great points!
Oxhorn oxhorn my question is to you why is Kellogg still the same age and looks the same when Sean our father is much older then after all these years shouldn't be like old as well
Did anyone else see vault 111 when they first saw this comment
justjnt gon the institute made him immortal with synth components so he could keep doing their tasks and stuff
Also the railroad operates in the DC area during fallout 3
The asterisk on Tinker Tom's terminal is on the next page. It says:
"If I really were a time traveler would I let a timeline exist where you knew I knew?
The first time I met Deacon with his name showing I read it as Decoy
But I was tired that day.

Ooooo nice one
That’s a really cool idea. I thought so as well and honestly I think would make his story even more unique in so many ways
That sounds like the James Bond movie theory. Well they both are spies in entertainment.

@@shotovfx9675 Yeah. Plus, you get so sidetracked building settlements, helping factions...I go days in real time before I remember, Oh yeah, my son.

I had no idea Deacon was this cool as a companion, maybe I should go do a Railroad playthrough, just for him.
I generally hate companions in Bethesda games, but Deacon is an exception.
Angry Goose Deacon is the best companion, Curie and Hancock are great too for personalities.
Preston and X6-88 can jump in a lake.

He'll also keep track of your accomplishments in the game.
@Casey Correia BUT ITS ONLY A THEORY
From what I remember it doesn't lock you out if you don't read the code, I passed a skill check after calling him out on his bullshit a couple times which makes him admit he was lying about it.
But I did notice when playing through Cabot's quest that if you're hiding behind something and waiting to get a good view of the enemies, he'll come up to you and say things like, "I got you, go", "Go on, I'm watching your back" which surprised me because no other companion had said that to me before
So basically, the Sans of Fallout.

Amazing, in depth and so, so Ox. Even for you this is an amazing piece of work. You said yourself you knew telling Deacons story would be complex & difficult but you excelled yourself.
Deacon's story is really, really simple. He's a liar... about being a liar.
Nicholas Cross
He's the greatest bamboozler that has ever lived.

I think the only way we will find out is if he shows up in another fallout game looking just like he does now then at least we can say he is a ghoul.
Zerakiel or if he shows up with the same face but looking way older then we will know he's human
And would make sense that he founded the railroad 20+ years ago instead of 60/70
I really feel that Deacon is supposed to represent the player from Fallout 3 and Fallout NV. Both games have a huge emphasis on leveling your speech, and you can lie your way out of almost anything, and do a lot of deceiving in the DLC, or talk people down from risky shit.
I think he's Todd Howard, think about it .... It just works

The writing in this game is simply incredible. And all anyone ever mentions is the old meme of "Another settlement needs your help."
I think it's particularly telling that Deacon doesn't seem to like it if you try to comfort him after his confession about Barbara.
Yusssss the enigma that is deacon will be explained by someone who can piece together Bethesda’s story telling
I have learned more about him now but still doesn't really answer anything xD
Nope the secret is that Ma'iq the liar of ES fame is under the skin of deacon

Deacon is a synth ... If you kill him you take synth parts from him
You keep saying that Silver, it's not true and even covered in the video.
Here is my Timeline for Deacon assuming everything he tells you in his last conversation is true, and that he is actually Johnny D:
I think Deacon was born in the region of the Commonwealth, joined the Deathclaws, and left them sometime before 2266.
Everything Deacon says is true. Other than him being a liar, of course.
