  • @beardiemom

    Taping the mouth closed while you sleep sounds so, so dangerous. While unlikely, if you were to throw up in your sleep, the risk of aspirating throw-up is way higher, which can cause severe pneumonia. Don't do experiments like that at home, they can do real harm.

      Tons of people sleep with their tongue blocking their entire throat for decades without doing anything about it. That’s way more dangerous than training your body to breath correctly when you’re in your early twenties

    • @beardiemom
      @beardiemom Рік тому

      @@ethancunningham3499 but you aren't "training your body to breathe correctly". You are forcing yourself to breathe through your nose, not knowing whether there's an underlying reason as to why you're not doing that automatically.
      You're not a doctor, don't do these experiments at home.
      Edit: Here is a little quote pulled from OSF HealthCare to support my point. And they're not the only place I found with a quick google that points out the risks:
      "Mouth taping not only doesn’t help you to breathe through your nose, it’s also highly dangerous. It can cause obstructed breathing and create other more serious sleep disorders like obstructive sleep apnea and sleep disruption.
      “You’re supposed to breathe in and out through your nose, but mouth taping is not safe at all,” said Kaninika Verma, MD, clinical sleep director at OSF HealthCare."

    Ay y'all, seeing some of these comments are genuinely pretty sad, so please remember, LOVE YOUR BODY AND FACE! Mouth breathing and nose breathing can help, but remember genetics also play a huge role in how your face looks (SHOCKER!) , so don't be hung up by these tiktok trends of taping your mouth for the sole purpose of simply "looking better", and don't be kicking yourself thinking "if ONLY I had breathed through my nose, I would have a greek god jawline!". Social Media be messing up how we see ourselves and you don't wanna go down the rabbit hole or "trying to look better" and actual body dysmorphia. Of course, breathing through your nose is good for other health reasons, you dont wanna snore etc, but please remember to go easy on yourself y'all, you deserve positivity in yo lives damnit

    Dr Ben, I would beg to differ about how you dismiss the facial/jaw changes that come from prolonged nasal breathing with high tongue posturing at any age. I don't think it happens quickly, but it will result in a prolonged youthful appearance when correct oral posturing is combined with exclusive nasal breathing.
    Further, it is one more vital piece of the puzzle for achieving a lifetime of good oral health.
    Certainly, child and adolescent growth is the most rapid and profound. However, if we examine a patient, who is a bruxier or clencher we often see the exostosis bone growth along the maxillary buccal with large mandibular Tori often coupled by tight oral facial muscles in varying degrees. Muscle is what grows or alters the supporting bones because bone follows muscles or form follows function. If our patients suffer a stroke or other medical condition where the muscles of mastication are paralyzed there will follow significant bone atrophy. Further our geriatric patients, who start favoring softer diets and develop more mouth breathing habits will go from a more youthful rounded facial shape like yourself to the adenoid face which is the long unattractive, tired face.

      @briannab4770 Рік тому +11

      Hmm, not exactly. So when you fall asleep, you don't become 100% unconscious. By maintaining a habit ALL through the waking day, your body is used to being in a certain position, and the muscles also become used to being a certain way. If you strengthen your tongue muscles, which ordinarily may be lax due to chronic mouth breathing, you can make it a more natural position for your tongue to rest on the roof of your mouth.

    Is there a way to fix a class 3 under bite in someone's late 20s?

    • @popthiccle1158
      @popthiccle1158 Рік тому

      you can try mewing, which will bring your maxilla forwards, and overtime the upper teeth will meet the bottom teeth, but in your late 20's it will take like 10+ years to reach that goal probably, the other (and much faster) solution is upper jaw surgery. another solution is braces but personally I think that's the worst option, since they just bring the lower jaw backwards to meet the upper teeth, which is less aesthetically pleasing, but what do I know i'm not even an orthodontist lol

    That’s not true, there was a guy on Joe Rogan who has a book called jaws I believe he’s older and gained 5 Pennie’s worth of jaw bone
