Intro: In this video, Dental Now Panorama explains the negative impacts of mouth breathing on dental health and provides tips to stop mouth breathing.
The Negative Impacts of Mouth Breathing: Mouth breathing can lead to a variety of dental health issues, including dry mouth, bad breath, gum disease, and tooth decay. Breathing through the mouth is also less efficient than breathing through the nose, as it causes less oxygen to be absorbed by the body.
Tip 1: Practice Breathing Through Your Nose: Breathing through your nose is more efficient, as it warms and filters the air as it enters the body, which allows for better oxygen absorption in the lungs. Practice breathing through your nose during the day and night to help retrain your body to breathe properly.
Tip 2: Use Nasal Strips or Breathing Aids: Nasal strips or other breathing aids can help keep your nasal passages open, allowing for easier breathing through your nose. These aids are particularly useful during exercise or when sleeping, as they can promote nose breathing.
Tip 3: Keep Your Mouth Closed: Keeping your lips together and breathing through your nose during the day and while sleeping can help retrain your body to breathe properly. This can also prevent dry mouth and bad breath.
Tip 4: Drink Plenty of Water: Drinking water can help keep the mouth moist, which can prevent bad breath and dry mouth. It is also important to avoid dehydrating drinks such as coffee and alcohol, which can exacerbate dry mouth symptoms.
Tip 5: Try Mouth Taping: Mouth taping involves placing a small piece of tape over your mouth while you sleep. The tape is a gentle reminder to breathe through your nose and can help retrain your body to breathe properly.
Conclusion: Proper breathing is essential for dental health and overall well-being. By following these tips, individuals can improve their dental health and sleep quality by stopping mouth breathing. If you have difficulty breathing through your nose, snore heavily, or experience other breathing issues, it is important to seek professional help from a dentist or medical professional who can diagnose and treat any underlying medical conditions.

It certainly does! There has been lots of research done on the topic and it shows that time and time again, mouth breathing has been proven to cause long term damage! It's really all about realizing that you're doing it.

    • @DentalNowPanorama
      @DentalNowPanorama  3 роки тому +2

@Prodigga no worries! glad you got something out of the videos.
Dr. Dhillon actually had the chance to visit one of Mike Mews's courses a while back and we do in fact believe in a lot of the concepts that they talk about. Of course, we suggest that you combine both the mewing exercises as well as orthodontic treatment so that you can get the most out of your treatment and maintain it for your long-term oral health. It takes quite a long time and it's quite difficult when your teeth are already crooked especially if you're an adult (it might be easier when you're younger).
We actually made a video on our channel about some natural methods to straighten your teeth at home, and this was one of the topics that we discussed.
Our recommendation would be for you to combine orthodontic treatment as well as some of the mewing exercises. When you visit orthodontists make sure that they understand the concepts of mewing and that they apply them at their office. Hopefully, this helps :)
Thank you so much for your questions! If you have any others, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Received my worst dental report card ever last week. Somehow I've become a mouth breather at night a few years ago. I've always had good gums and teeth till recently. I recently learned about nose breathing and realize it's my mouth breathing causing my gum disease. I've been taping at night but still find myself waking with a dry mouth. Any suggestions?

  • @williamwightman8409
    @williamwightman8409 Рік тому +27

Similar experience. I use a small 1/2" x 1" strip of blue painters tape (cheap, easy, does not stick too much) placed vertically between my closed lips at night for about 7 hours at night, have for about 1-1/2 years. Sometimes I find I have removed it during sleep. Do this 5/7 nights. The habit of breathing all night through the nose trickles into the day and now I never breath through the mouth except when exercising hard (higher than aerobic levels). Also you look better in public and in pictures with your mouth shut. Another benefit is that your mouth does not dry up at night if you use tape even though your jaw may tend to open and mouth breathing happen unconsciously, with tape it does not. Sneezing and yawning are a bit goofy but manageable. Since I sleep alone there is no communication issue. A closed mouth is better for dental hygiene/health.

Since I moved out of the city and into a costal town I’ve noticed a great improvement which I owe to the fresh air. Still, all those years growing up in the polluted city has had some negative effects on my facial structure.

Get your gears, start exerice 3-4 times (takes an hour daily) weekly. It makes your internal organ and body work well. Esp in this case, your esophagus lining & sphincter. Running, cycling etc in aerobic mode. HIIT also works.
I do these when my body starts having any trouble. Start you regime, in a month, you can see the result. You may extend into 3 months.
Should you think thats too much, reduce your regime into 2-3 times a week. 1-2 times also work fine..

Well done ! It’s an unspoken problem. This helps.
It’s a particular problem with special needs kids. Lack of awareness is probably the main reason.
As caregivers and parents…let the dentist know as your loved one is going in …remind this person…say why it’s important….facial structure.
A positive is….the tongue is made to rest at the floor of the mouth. Say to a kid…shut the door, whatever works to garner the action. Then, just tap the chin, yours or theirs, develop the habit.
Often when I’ve complimented someone on their excellent posture, he or she said someone, a parent or sibling, nagged them to stand up straight.
He or she made it automatic, just to avoid the hassle. Do it for someone.
    Help them train.
I subscribed, this is an excellent video. Great topic.

i had trouble breathing out of my nose, especially when sleeping, my entire life. I got a septoplasty done 6 months ago and i’m finally seeing improvement. i also sleep with a cool mist humidifier (clean it regularly or mildew can develop) and an air purifier. i always feel worse when i sleep with my mouth open but since surgery it’s easier to breathe with my nose. i do warn it is a very painful surgery that will cost u a few nights of no sleep and at least a week of bed rest but i’m starting to believe it’s worth it.

I always feel like on or the other of my nostrils is congested, but I've never thought I am allergic to anything. I can breathe fine through my nose when I'm awake, but when I lay down to sleep, I suddenly can't get enough air through my nostrils. Was this what it was like for you before septoplasty? Did your surgery change the sound of your voice at all?

    • @katandallthat

@@brushstroke3733 yes! that was something i dealt with for the entirety of my childhood 😅 so i had to prop myself up like a 110 degree angle in order to be able to breathe enough to sleep. as i got older it became a little less severe but there are some steps you may want to take to better /solve this issue.
for sure get allergy tested, and if that shows anything, start using an allergy nasal spray. i had a few problems besides deviated septum like allergies, a bone spur, swollen polyps, etc. so you’ll want to go see an ENT (Ears Nose and Throat doctor) and they can take a look with a weird little camera up your nose.
i wasn’t able to see a doctor for a long time but if i had i believe i would have had a much easier time sleeping.
and since the surgery (1 YR post-op) i do feel like i’ve seen some improvement. it’s subtle, and i still deal with allergies and dryness but i am able to breathe out of both sides of my nose at the same time for the first time in my WHOLE life and it’s amazing. so i can’t tell you exactly what may be wrong with ur nose but an ENT can. hope this helps!!

I've been trying to keep my mouth closed for over a year it causes muscle strain in my bottom lip and chin that may be because I try to keep a closed lip smile. Somebody close to me that has been a mother figure in my life told me I should smile that's what started this whole thing I guess my relaxed face looks like I'm mad or sad or some negative emotion. I am 35 so I guess trying to reprogram the natural state of how I've held myself for decades would cause some discomfort

One thing I would like to add is that, at least in my case, mouth breathing and nose breathing doesn’t involve the same muscles in the body.
Mouth breathing occurs using the muscles in the chest area, while nose breathing is in the belly. That’s why I feel I’m having a hard time switching to nose breathing at night, it’s because I have to reprogram my subconscious to use the belly muscles while sleeping.

I've always been taught that nose breathing is essential because nostrils hairs act as a filter, so I'm a nose breather. However at night my jaw would naturally open, causing drooling and so on. I have been able to change this completely by placing my hand below my chin, just slightly, not as much as to squeeze my teeth together (teeth should never touch when you're not eating). This is only comfortable when lying on the side. It has proved 100% efficient for me after a few months. Now my jaw stays nicely shut at night 😊

Try taking 10k-15k IUs of vitamin D. Also, if your nose feels stuffy, try inhaling thru your mouth and then slowly exhaling thru your nose. After a few minutes you should feel your nasal passage relax and you should begin to be Able to inhale thru your nose. Try taking slow and deep breaths thru your nose. It’s all about training your body. The vitamin d will take a few weeks to kick in but it will help with allergies and inflammation

Could be a medical issue that requires treatment, but most of the time sinuses are constricted because you're breathing through your mouth. If you do not breathe through your nose it will close up. And you have to force it, like inhaling through your mouth and then exhaling through your nose. If you do that for a couple of minutes the sinuses will slowly start opening, at least for me. I habitually mouth breathe, so I wear a wide elastic strap to keep my jaw shut at night and that has helped immensely.

There's a few appliances that you can wear at night that can help. It will not only help you stop your mouth breathing by wearing tape over your mouth so that you can ensure to keep it closed at night but it will work as spacers in your nose so that you can open the airway. There's a lot of different solutions and the best bet that you can do is to try a variety of them and see what works best for you. We've had a lot of patients that have had success from just taping their mouths at night and this forces them to breathe through their nose. Hopefully this gives you a little bit of insight! Our best recommendation would be to consider working on some of those underlying causes we mentioned as well as the exercises. We can't really say whether or not they will work since we haven't see you in person, but if you don't see any success within the next few years then you should consider saving up for Orthodontic treatment.
You should also consider doing some more research into some of the factors that actually cussed your crooked teeth. We made another recent video on our channel about that, and hopefully it gives you some insight on somethings you may be doing wrong! If you have any other questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out. We would be more than happy to help guide you in the right direction. Diet also I believe plays a part. Dairy should be eliminated if you have sinus issues

I used to never mouth breathe and only through my nose. Now I know I'm a predominant mouth breather. When I keep my mouth closed and try to only nose breathe I can't. I can inhale and exhale through my nose without issue. The issue is I feel like I'm not getting enough oxygen and I'm slowly suffocating. I try breathing exercises,no congestion, don't smoke cigarettes, etc. Is there something I can do to improve the quality of breathing through my nose??? I can't afford surgery etc. so I'm searching for a holistic solution to my issue. If anyone else has this problem and corrected it then your advice would be much appreciated
