Thanks for this informative presentation! Btw both chalk and talc are white calcium carbonate. Chalk "dust" is used for marking athletic fields and is super cheap in bulk.
Thanks for a great video and for taking the time to show how clear Gesso works rather than just posting the recipe. So much more useful. You have a great personality and humour, a lady after my own heart. Xx
Thank you for this awesome tutorial . I live on an island called Rhodes, it is in Greece . You can imagine how hard it is for me to get stuff for my junk journals. So this is so fantastic. I am very happy that I can make gesso myself. You are amazing!!!!! Kisses from Greece.

Is the Marble Dust the same thing as French Chalk, does anyone know? Thank you very much for sharing this video. I lost track of it and tried to search for it, and could not find this information anywhere else. It was a huge relief to look again today and finally find this video.
+Alan Silva do you mean regular white gesso? Because you can use the clear to do that as well. But if you want a regular white gesso, you would make it the same adding about 1/2 cup of white acrylic paint (depending on how poaque you want it add more or less) and add about 1/4 cup more marble dust to make up for the extra liquid in the paint. That will give you a nice white canvas gesso :)
Very nice demo. Thank you for sharing the use of gesso. I do some bottle deco and use modge podge. Is it possi le to use gesso instead? I live in India and do.not get such craft items. Would love to.make gesso and use it _ provided I get marble dust here.
in your other vedio you mention home made texture paste. i am trying to search your site for that. could not find it. please can you tell me how to make it. thanks
I am About to try my 1st paint by number kit. I read that I should put a clear gesso finish over the printed canvas before I begin. Any tips other than what I saw on your video? Thank you

Thanks a lot for the recipe for clear Gesso- I DID not know that there was something like Clear Gesso one could make at home!!!!!!!!! and Ia have all the possible stuff that one can buy but NOT clear Gesso Yes clear structure gel etcThanks again
Can i use plaster of Paris as a substitute for marble dust when making this? I'm starting to hate mod podge because of that glossy "matte" finish and there's no tooth to hold color once its dry. It tints but not that bright vibrant color I was going for.
Thank you soo much Pink Poodle crafts!! Love your DIY on clear gesso! Posting to my Barefoot Journaling Chronicles FB closed group. I know they're gonna love it too! Smiles, ~Evon Robinson

How to make Elmer's glue at home" The same glue that is used in school. I found the recipe online. Pour 3/4 cup of water in a saucepan over medium heat. Add 1/4 cup cornstarch, 2 tablespoons light corn syrup and 1 teaspoon white vinegar. Whisk the ingredients together until they're blended well. Stir the mixture constantly until it thickens.

Thanks a lot for such an awesome video to prepare Gesso at home. But the problem is I couldn't find marble powder in our local market (Islamabad, Pakistan). What's the alternate for this powder, can I use baking soda or cornflour instead (another issue is that I couldn't find cornstarch as well). So please please guide me in this regard. Hoping to get your response. Stay Blessed.
thanks! I like how you showed the different types of supplies and how they react. I am excited to make some! So much fun!!! I see great potential! I subscribed and liked! Looking forward to more of your videos. Thanks! :)
What happens if you add water to the watercolor pencil on the gesso? I mean - your example was runny. Could I get a watercolor pencil effect? Also, will it mute a metallic effect?
+Lynn Galvan yes ma'am that is what you would do! And you would add a bit more of the marble dust as well.. maybe about a cup of white paint and a 1/4 cup of the marble dust :)
okay, bought a gallon of PVA glue. Do you think diatomaceous earth (DE) powder would work to give it "tooth" instead of marble powder or whiting? I have a huge bag of it already, I'm going to try it. I don't care whether it's clear or just almost clear; I'll probably add a little raw umber pigment anyway.
LOVE this. Now, if I wanted to make it white, or black or whatever, how much acrylic paint would I add to this recipe, or would it change the recipe entirely?
I'm thinking about drawing with soft pastel on fabric. and lastly do you think I could cover my art with the clear gesso so that the pastel doesn't fade away? thanks again!
+Ornella Frere the powder gives it tooth, think trying to write on glossy paper like magazines, using the powder makes it possble to write, color, draw on the slick surface
Can you tell me where to buy the Powdered Marble? You have a wonderful way of showing what and how to do things. I really appreciate that. Will be looking forward to seeing more of your how-to videos. Thank you very much.
Celine Barberio Aww thank you! I dont think you can image transfer with gesso but hey, give it a try! But you can use white PVA glue to do a transfer :)
another excellent video! ok so I got the marble dust and re watched and made it tonight and it is so oooooooh weird! it's like fizzy and so so sticky that I can't lay it down on paper...any ideas of my oops? I used a real tablespoon measure and used 4 heaping of them. christina
+Christina fizzy? huh that weird. Are you using regular white glue? Where did you get your marble dust from? Im not sure why it would be fizzy.... and if its too thick, add a bit of water to it. Make sure the marble dust is pure and doesn't have any additives in it... read the bag and get back to me or send me a link to where you got it... maybe we can get to the bottom of why that is happening.

I would give you all the credit and tell them check out your channel. No pressure.I understand either way:)
Thanks a lot for your honesty , this is the best GESSO recipe 🏆🏅 If i want to do abstract paint on a homemade canvas, can i add white paint to it? And how much?
Hi, I am writing from Germany. Your homemade Gesso seems georgeous. But I couldn`t find anything named marble dust in Germany. But as you said it has something to do with animals, I suppose it`s a kind of chalk powder. Because with this the farmers paint the walls in the stables. But I am not really sure. And if it is the chalk powder it is carefully to use, because it heats up very high when it combines with water. If you have any suggestion where to buy the marble powder you use, please let me know. Thanks a lot in advance and for your video. Kind regards.........Bettina
+Bolli24584 On another youtube video the guy used Plaster of Paris. If you can't find marble powder which I found at an art supply store you can use the plaster instead.
+Jane Mikas Yes you can use that for regular white gesso but for the clear, you need the marble dust because the Plaster doesnt dry clear like the marble dust and you will get a white film on anything you use it on. :)
Dear Jane, thank you very much for your helpful informations. Inbetween and thanks Google I found marble dust in Germany - here the Name is Marmorstaub - too easy just the right translation : marble = Marmor + dust = Staub. So I ordered it from an Artist supply shop and tried your recipe and it`s fabulous. Again thanks a lot and kind regards......Bettina
Hi, I have marble dust from U.S.A. Fredrix Brand. Marble Dust is basically calcium carbonate which is also used in the ceramics industry. You can get calcium carbonate at the pottery supply store. It has to be Ph neutral though and I am not sure if they bake it first to become ph neutral.
Thanks so much for your for the clear gesso recipe ☺ . It is way too expensive for my budget, which is quite limited. Can you please let me know where to find the marble dust? Thank You, Hippie Me ✌
Hi there, thank you for this video. I have made the recipe with Calcium Carbonate, but it seems very runny... is that how it is supposed to be? Thank you
+Fonda Sparks I dont think the 4-5 spoons full of talc would give it enough of the tooth needed and anymore than 4-5 spoons full would likely make it cloudy if it wouldnt make it cloudy to begin with... you can always experiment and try it. And if it works, let me know. :)
Can you use white gesso in place of "chalk" paint? I've seen decoupage videos for glass, like wine bottles. Can I use white, clear or black gesso in place of the chalk paint? Does it stick to glass well?
Emily Hahn Not sure about that, but gesso itself is an adhesion substance, pretty much everything sticks to it well. So if you do use white gesso instead of a white chalk paint, it may not have the exact same texture but pastels/chalks should stick to it well. :)
you can just add the marble dust (calcium carbonate) to any paint and make it chalk paint. Gesso has the added glue in it along with the marble dust but for chalk paint, you would just put some of the marble dust directly into the paint... you dont need much... i would say a teaspoon per 1/4 cup would work fine... test it out and if it isnt quite right, add a little more of the marble dust. Ive used it to make the front of my craft cabinet into a chalkboard and it works great!
Hi, I was wondering whether it would be possible to use it OVER pastels - ie as a sort of fixative over soft pastels. Do you think it will work or not? I'm asking because I haven't found any spray fixative for pastels that I really like. It always darkens the colours. I wonder if this will smudge or darken them too? Tx!
+Desre Franco Thats a good question... im not really sure... maybe you can experiment and let me know... I dont use a ton of pastels so Im not sure when i would get around to testing that theory out but please let me know if you find out :)
Hello, on Leslie’s Creative site you mentioned we should not use school glue for the gesso recipe but instead use a PVA glue, does that same rule apply to clear gesso? And just curious if clear glue would work? Thanks for the recipe! I had never heard of clear and it is changing my world!! lol
AWESOME! Great video! I love the amazing variety of techniques shown & the results [esp. w/ water!] one can accomplish, using CLEAR GESSO! Now, to find Calcium Carbonate... Lowe's?
Oh, wow... I'm so sorry, I didn't get a notification that you'd replied 7 months ago! A very belated Thank You! I have a newer Dick Blick catalog, but they'e gotten expensive... I need the white right now, due to a need to block out a mistake in an acrylic painting. Glad I found your channel again [thank goodness! I don't want you to think I'd ignored you!] I have the ingredients to make white Gesso. Will try to make clear another time. Again, it looks to be awesome! Thanks, again, for your tutorial, and your understanding.
hi thank you so much for your video. I did a search on amazon for this item and Fredrix Powdered Marble Sizing and Priming is what's coming up. is this the same thing? thank you once again and have a great day. (looking forward to hearing back from you soon)!

I'm having trouble finding Elmer's Glue-All in gallon jugs. Will Elmer's School Glue work? If so, does it need less water?
i have seen alot of vids on you tube of diy gesso. but i like to see who has the best vid on making the stuff. so far yours is the best one! :)
+Charlene Cartier Aww thanks Charlene! :)
Yes, I am watching this video 5 years after it was made, but clear Gesso is timeless, lol! Thanks for great video and info!

Well played
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I love clear gesso, but have been very frugal with it since it is so expensive. I will definitely use this recipe.

When you explained about not having the mason jar, it made me chuckle. Really funny! Thank you for a fun and completely understandable tutorial!😊
Thanks for the video. Could you please make a video on acrylic binder DIY. I couldn't find DIY for acrylic binder.
I can't find Fredrix marble dust anywhere. Are you still able to find it and if so, where? If not, what are you using instead? Thx‼️🥰
This is great! Thanks for showing all the differences and tips. I'll be making some for sure.
Cynthia McCoy Awesome!!! Thanks for subscribing!!

+Hutoxy Panthaki Yes clear gesso would be great for glass bottles :)
What a great video, I've been looking everywhere for clear gesso, and this is just what I need, but, is this OK to use as a base on glass??
Great to watch your video. You bring a lot of joy. Thank you. God bless.
This was a mystery to me...
Thank you!
in your other vedio you mention home made texture paste. i am trying to search your site for that. could not find it. please can you tell me how to make it. thanks
I am About to try my 1st paint by number kit. I read that I should put a clear gesso finish over the printed canvas before I begin. Any tips other than what I saw on your video? Thank you
Hi Pink Poodle... LOL. Really like your video and how well you've put it together. From an impressed Aussie.

u explain really nice like a art and craft teacher and ur work is awesome
high can you use plaster of paris instead of marble dusty? great videos very useful thanks
+Lyn Stef No, unfortunately, the plaster of paris will cause the gesso to be cloudy and not clear :(
Wonderful video. I'm relatively new to watercolor painting and want to color in adult coloring books. I think this will help.
How to make Elmer's glue at home"
The same glue that is used in school. I found the recipe online.

have you tried this?
HI again, can you use powered marble sizing? It's on Amazon a four pound bag. They don't show the bag just a pile of powder.
i think that might be the same. I know dickblick.com has marble dust for 7 bucks plus like 5 something for shipping for 4lbs.
Thank you for the video. I appreciate it. Can you use it in your journaling bible
awesome info! third video i watched and i dont have to look further! you answered all questions i had! will check out your channel! have a good time!

HI thanks for your video. I have found marble polishing powder here in the uk do you think that would work the same as marble dust?
You are awsome and the recipe too! I must try this.
I have some calcium carbonate. Would I get anything usable using that in place of the marble dust?
Now I have another question what about thicker gesso and texture past- modeling paste? How do you do that?
Please
thanks for letting me know it's called marble dust or male powder. I was going crazy searching for it.
Can i use it on canvas , for priming for acrylic painting
yes :)
yes!
Can you use clear gesso on mdf coasters.

Ok one more quest I want regular gesso to can I add white acrilic paint to make it come out white
+Lynn Galvan yes ma'am that is what you would do! And you would add a bit more of the marble dust as well.. maybe about a cup of white paint and a 1/4 cup of the marble dust :)
thanks so much. need to do this myself.
+Jacquie Frosinos Thanks for watching! You can make this its very easy!! :)
Thanks so much for this video. I just found you. Better late than never. 🌻🙏🎉

Fran B. - I made some clear gesso and was wondering if it needs stirring each time I use it? TKS
yes, you will typically need to stir it each time you open it after its been sitting for more than a few hours :)
Stacy that is awesome girl i love your talent soooooo much.....Where can i find the powdered marble? Thanx girl 💜
If you Google it, you will find several sources. Or if you have an art supply store near you, they should have it.

Donna Day You're welcome, thank you for subscribing! Hope you like it here. Shemi is fantastic... i love her to bits!
LOVE this. Now, if I wanted to make it white, or black or whatever, how much acrylic paint would I add to this recipe, or would it change the recipe entirely?

thank you so much for this. it helped me a lot. do you think I can use this clear gesso on fabric? thanks for the help

Can you tell me where to buy the Powdered Marble? You have a wonderful way of showing what and how to do things. I really appreciate that. Will be looking forward to seeing more of your how-to videos. Thank you very much.
Barbara Kodz The cheapest place ive seen is dickblick.com :) And thank you for the kind words :)
What can you make or use to thicken acrylic paint so it looks like oil paint?
super heavy gloss medium will give your acrylic some texture (will show strokes slightly more)
yes, exactly right! Good job slbram17...youre a smart cookie!
Thanks so much you are such a doll... Sharing on FB BTW can you do image transfer with your Gesso?
Celine Barberio Aww thank you! I dont think you can image transfer with gesso but hey, give it a try! But you can use white PVA glue to do a transfer :)
Very hard to purchase the marble dust in small quantities......
yes, true. But its not really expensive and you can make lots of things with it including chalk paint, texture paste and of course, gesso.
Have seen quite a few DIY's on this, the baby powder can substitute for the calcium carbonate correct?

Im glad you were able to follow the recipe and it came out the way you like... enjoy it! :)
Hi,
I have marble dust from U.S.A.
Thank you
Could I use talc instead of this powder or would it make it too white?
+Fonda Sparks I dont think the 4-5 spoons full of talc would give it enough of the tooth needed and anymore than 4-5 spoons full would likely make it cloudy if it wouldnt make it cloudy to begin with... you can always experiment and try it. And if it works, let me know. :)
Hi can we use plaster of paris?
Can i paint with oil paint on clear gesso
Can you use white gesso in place of "chalk" paint? I've seen decoupage videos for glass, like wine bottles. Can I use white, clear or black gesso in place of the chalk paint? Does it stick to glass well?
Emily Hahn Not sure about that, but gesso itself is an adhesion substance, pretty much everything sticks to it well. So if you do use white gesso instead of a white chalk paint, it may not have the exact same texture but pastels/chalks should stick to it well. :)
Emily Hahn However, if you are planning to erase the chalk, as in use of a slate board, you may want to use the chalk paint instead.
you can just add the marble dust (calcium carbonate) to any paint and make it chalk paint.
Not sure about plain gesso though.
WOW thats great I am so going to make some of this. Tfs xx
Linda Neale Glad to hear! Let me know how it turns out!
Thank you. I needed to hear what you can do Gesso for.
Hello, on Leslie’s Creative site you mentioned we should not use school glue for the gesso recipe but instead use a PVA glue, does that same rule apply to clear gesso? And just curious if clear glue would work? Thanks for the recipe! I had never heard of clear and it is changing my world!! lol
Is this smooth to touch? I have a Windsor and Newton clear gesso and it's so rough! Thanks for sharing!
AWESOME! Great video! I love the amazing variety of techniques shown & the results [esp. w/ water!] one can accomplish, using CLEAR GESSO! Now, to find Calcium Carbonate... Lowe's?
+Kathie B Actually dickblick.com has marble dust cheap!
I don't want you to think I'd ignored you!]
I have the ingredients to make white Gesso. Will try to make clear another time. Again, it looks to be awesome! Thanks, again, for your tutorial, and your understanding.
