- Even if you’ve been following my work for a while, you’re not going to believe how bad the state of affairs has gotten when it comes to postgraduate education in counseling psychology - until you hear from today’s guest.
Ryan Rogers, a student currently pursuing a masters degree in the hopes of becoming a therapist, joins me to discuss the troubling trends he's observed in mental health education. Ryan shares his personal journey, including his background in addiction and the motivation behind his pursuit of a counseling career. We delve into the alarming shift in graduate programs, where political activism often takes precedence over the core principles of therapy.
Ryan highlights his experiences in classes that prioritize critical theory over practical skills, leaving students ill-equipped to address the real needs of their clients. We explore the implications of this shift, particularly in relation to suicide prevention, addiction treatment, and the importance of cultural competency. Ryan raises critical questions about the role of therapists: should they be activists for so-called social justice, or should they focus on helping individuals navigate their personal struggles?
Throughout our conversation, we examine the consequences of substituting genuine therapeutic training with ideological indoctrination. As we unpack these issues, we aim to shed light on the future of counseling psychology and the urgent need for a return to a client-centered approach that prioritizes healing over activism.
Ryan Rogers is a graduate student in clinical mental health counseling. He has a bachelor’s degree in psychology and work history in addiction treatment. Two of my acquaintances are newly graduated therapists. Since I recently shared my detransition story on a podcast, I offered the link to them, thinking they might find it useful, at least informative. I never heard back from the 20-something. But the older acquaintance, who is a mother, eagerly accepted the link and was grateful to learn of my experience. I kind of expected this, to be honest.
Great session, thanks. One of the most idiotic occurrences in academe that I have heard of is when some prominent American and Canadian anthropologists were organising a conference around sex and how important the methods of determining that in anthropological work such as digs and forensic identification of skeletons is. They wanted the imprimatur of the two professional anthropological organizations in the US and Canada and it was refused. The conference organizers were told by those organizations that if they wanted that approval (and I think some funding) then they were not to say that skeletons were identified as male or female. They had to say the that the skeletal sex was 'estimated'. This was because some students might be 'traumatised' by hearing skeletons were identified as male or female. (The organisers sensibly told them to "go jump" and they ran the conference without kowtowing.) I think that we live in a uniquely stupid time.
That’s sad to hear/read about. I’ve heard of female skeletons being found with weapons and other marks of a warrior, and then a paper being written to determine that this ancient person must have been trans. Ya know because “chicks” can’t be warriors, obvi. How can anyone defend this ideology after reading this anti woman drivel? But to know that a prominent anthropological organization filed with actual scientists are demanding nobody acknowledge when a skeletal remain is its biological sex is absurd. Sadly the sciences have completely gotten on board with insanity.
These things are happening in Psych wards too. I got put on a 5150 72 hour hold and, while some of the nurses were wonderful, being the only non-POC and hetero person in the ward at the time got me targeted by a peer support counselor who spent the entire time I was there dismissing my pain, mocking me, and continually asking me why I was there. How could I possibly have any mental health problems when I represented the oppressor? The worst part is that I was having ideation because I was working in a different psych ward where a coworker was bullying me for the same things, and when I tried to talk to anyone about this they all acted like I must be the problem. So I snapped and felt hopeless. Psych wards are some of the most toxic places on earth. Or at least in California they are.
😱
how awful ! Thank you for sharing!! Hope you find support ❤
I'm from California. I grew up with a single mom as an only child. I moved to Arizona 15 years ago to get my kids out of the state. It's not just CA, it's everywhere
I had the same experience in my Masters. Finished it in 2020. The activism was so in your face. I knew something was wrong but wasn’t knowledgeable about politics/the culture war until the very tail end of my program.
I am always amazed at Stephanie’s incisiveness and clarity and how she can pinpoint an illuminating concept within a conversation. She is the opposite of a rambling, fuzzy thinker. Great guest too.
Aww thank you!
She knows how to cut to the heart of an issue.
Agreed.
This is frightening. My takeaway is that if you need a therapist make sure he or she graduated before 2015, just to be safe. The same thing is happening in medicine. I already won’t see a physician younger than 40.
I found a Polish therapist from Poland. I had gone through many before finding her. The minute I saw that she was in her 40s and from Poland (Catholic, old school) I knew I’d be able to actually be seen and heard and not just judged.
@@Accountdeactivated_1986YES! Fellow Catholic here! Impossible to go into secular therapy now. It’s open season on “organized religion” as a permissible belief system.
I had a horrific experience in a similar program and it was nothing more than an indoctrination camp. Because of that experience I will never step foot on a college campus ever again. I completed 2 masters degrees online and think that’s the way of the future.
I experienced this in a science class. So, I spoke about how high testosterone in women with PCOS affects the liver and pancreas since the liver and pancreas and liver are also female. And, then said this can also happen to trans ftm.
I’ve heard conferences where it was argued that schizophrenia or other mental disorders don’t really exist.
It would make sense that they don’t think therapy is necessary.
My guess is that they would say all problems are “systemic” and none rest in the individual client.
You do some really heavy work, Stephanie. And you're good at it.
Paul👍
New Zealand
She does the heavy lifting, for sure.
As my daughter said the other day, this profession will one day be held accountable for the damage they've wrought in the last decade.
I hope they do but I think they won't
that’s up to us, isn’t it?
This is a really disturbing interview not only for the content but the fact that almost nobody is reacting to it. Are people not realising that this it what they learn our future professionals it's really scary.🥺🥺🥺
I agree. I often look around my classes and wonder if anyone else is noticing.
I felt this way back in the 1990s when we were being taught blank slate theory and a bunch of other theories that had no basis in reality. Everyone seemed to just be drinking it in, zero pushback. I was just relieved to know that this stuff would never make its way outside of academia. It was shocking when this stuff reared its ugly head and permeated every aspect of our culture in recent years.
most people refuse to believe it when you tell them, they demand “sources,” yet refuse to search the sources themselves, then when you give them sources they refuse to look at them. They say, “that’s not happening, you’re crazy, but if it’s happening, it’s only a few people in some places, but even if it’s happening more and more, it’ll go away, but even if it’s not going away, isn’t it good that it’s happening? but if it isn’t good that it’s happening, I can’t do anything about it.”
I’m confused as to how they promote reckless freedom but condemn individualism.
It's not just the woke grad school. Once we get licensed, it's the woke board, other woke providers, and now the unscrupulous webinar therapist. We don't have a mental crisis, we have a qualified mental health provider crisis. I had to leave the system to be sane.
55:00 The idea of boundaries is around, but they are normless. Boundaries are no longer things established and mediated by society, but are instead entirely idiosyncratic - even arbitrary - and developed & enforced by the individual.
It's interesting how much I relate to Stephanie's life experiences & chsnges to world view, even though we have grown up & lived on different continents. I am so grateful that the antinatalism didnt get to me enough to stop me having two children.
Terrence Reals book "I do not want to talk about it" on male depression is great. I have some of his other books. The part where his books is mentioned on marriage and it is always the mans fault is a little disheartening since I found the one on depression so good.
Later when talking about hatred and envy. I would say it is actually resentment and the hatred and envy comes from the resentment. Douglas Murray touches on that well in "War on the West" and the cure for resentment is gratitude.
War on the West was a great book. My own therapist has said that some of Terrence Real’s other works are great but in class we read How Can I Get Through to You which I didn’t think was so great.
I appreciate this. Thank you.
Saying the quiet part out loud is a good way to describe it. And the significant point there is that this has been going on for a century - just more quietly before.
A strategy I'm trying to employ lately, inspired by (Thomas Sowell's words) "There are no solutions, only trade offs." I ask the person... "okay, you have this idea. But what's wrong with it? What are the 'trade offs?' What are the costs? Critique your own perspective relative to my own." Engage them in this thought experiment🐿
Would be curious to know if you have had any success with this strategy as it does require logical reflection, something they are loathe to engage in.
I considered becoming a psychologist. But my friends told me I was Nuts. 🥜🥜🥜 🐿
😂
Me too, but I can't go along with this stuff.
Professors saying "unalive" makes sense if they intend to post their lectures online.
I hate it too, but the idiot censors on the tech platforms are to blame for that.
I'd love to talk with you, as an LCSW that is in pain as well as I see this happening.
Meeting link is in show notes
The “I identify as a Capricorn” bit was very funny. Although it is alarming that this is how they’re training psychologists these days… but at least now I understand why my old psychologist recommended that I be poly!
This. Is. BONKERS.
It took decades for it to reach this point of insanity... and it will take years for it to be undone. But at least with the new presidential administration, and what that will do for the Dept of Education, now we are on the right track.
Might be state-by-state, but could you post a link for how to report a therapist who is improperly practicing in the ways described?
It is state by state. You would search for the board that regulates that license in that state.
Thanks for nothing Paulo Freire.
Adler graduate school might be a more practical option for some
the word, delve, has nothing to do with so-called a.i.
If monogamy guaranteed a stable home life then you wouldn't have all those divorced and blended families lol Loved this video but felt a bit of judgement and lack of understanding on non monogamy and why people choose it.
She literally said in the discussion that there are no guarantees
Polyamory works for a very specific subset of weird people - the kind of people who would call themselves "moonchild", for instance.
Monogamy, on the other hand, is the most stable, most efficient platform on which to attempt to build a family for the majority of people in society. That's the simple reality.
The hippy-dippy types who try to push polyamory on everyone else as if it's in any way equal to monogamy are either brainwashed commies, or just smoke too much dope.
Relationships fall apart for many reasons. It doesn't follow that the problem is with monogamy, or that the fix is to add more partners into the mix.
