144. Scapegoat or Sacrifice? Nina Paley Reframes Group Dynamics & Cancel Culture
I had a fascinating conversation with Nina Paley, an animator, director, artist, and co-host of Heterodorx podcast. While some may know her award-winning animated films like "Sita Sings the Blues" and "Seder Masochism," our conversation delved deeper into her personal journey through cancel culture and her insights on scapegoating dynamics.
Nina shared how her life changed dramatically in 2017 when she spoke up about gender identity issues after a year of careful research and consideration. The backlash was swift and severe - she was banned from festivals, speaking engagements dried up, and her career as a celebrated artist effectively came to an end. What struck me most was her evolution in processing this experience, particularly how she's come to view it through a spiritual lens, despite not being traditionally religious.
We explored the ancient biblical concept of scapegoating, and Nina offered a compelling analysis of the difference between sacrifice and scapegoating. Through her research on Jesus Christ, she had a profound realization that helped her reframe her own experience - she could choose to see herself as a sacrifice rather than just a scapegoat, finding agency in a situation where she previously felt powerless.
Our conversation touched on the psychological dynamics of cancel culture, the nature of tribal behavior, and the powerful energies that get activated when communities unite against a perceived internal threat. Nina's insights about how people often only "punch up" at those they perceive as powerful gave her a new perspective on her own cancellation.
We also discussed her thoughts on artificial intelligence and its impact on artistic communion with audiences, leading to a poignant reflection on how the media landscape is rapidly changing. Nina shared vulnerably about the grief of losing her career and the ongoing process of accepting that the past cannot be recreated.
What I appreciate most about Nina is her ability to maintain perspective while acknowledging pain. Despite everything she's been through, she hasn't lost her capacity for nuanced thinking or her recognition of human complexity. As she put it, "Life is suffering, but it's not only suffering."
This conversation reminded me that sometimes our deepest wounds can become sources of wisdom, and that there's always more than one way to understand our most painful experiences.
Nina Paley is the creator of the award-winning animated musical feature films Sita Sings the Blues and Seder-Masochism. A 2006 Guggenheim Fellow and Free Culture advocate, she recently published the unexpectedly controversial comic book Agents of H.A.G. and the popular GENDER WARS Playing Cards. She regularly draws requests for Hundred-and-fifty Dollar Drawings. Her experimental digital projects include Apocalypse Animated and MysticSymbolic. A staunch proponent of Free Speech, Nina co-hosts the Heterodorx podcast with Corinna Cohn.

Rare and refreshing to hear an artist come out so strongly against copyright. Some of her arguments sounded like they may have been influenced by Stephen Kinsella or Jeff Tucker. Copyright was the foot in the door to attack free speech online. It forced tech platforms to create these vast systems of automated content policing that would later be turned towards enforcing any peculiar preference of people in power.

I love Nina Paley. I’m an old school San Franciscan too, and I remember the Tranny Shack, and working alongside trannies, who were fun and outrageously unique back in the day, and often very hardcore people who I had a lot of respect and sympathy for. I remember when the Tranny Shack apologized for their name and it shocked me, then it closed down. All of the lesbian bars shut down. And young overly sensitive people completely changed the conversation. San Francisco stopped being fun, and I began to avoid the community as it became filled with angry touchy people who were looking for offense that wasn’t there.

I'm glad gender-critical views are being given a platform, but being against copyright laws is just off the wall. Copyright laws exist for a reason. Intellectual property is property, and I don't want anybody stealing mine. It's called plagiarism and it's both illegal and unethical.

1:00:00 As to purity, and saying that "this is human nature, so all humans behave this way, including me:" I don't agree with Nina. We *don't* all act the same, and whether or not we scapegoat others depends on our chosen behavior. Some people don't choose that behavior, and they are not lying to themselves to know that.

To everyone in the comments that stoll push the trans movement, remember trans is an ideology noy biology. It's ideology not a fact. How long until we stop this ideology? If you have boys what this society is doing is criminal, but girls are not winning much either. I have no children, no dog in this fight. I just sit back and watch and feel sad at the lives I see ruined. I remember a happy childhood when Dr Sax talks about how we actually played as children. So free and childlike. Now it's just fear and ideologies.

Lol...well as a person well beyond 30, I have been saying most people really are not adults until 30, and I was speaking as a woman. I didn't really feel like I made good decisions until 30. After listening to this I feel so sorry for boys, but it explains why we no longer see real boys, they are being raised like girls. It must be horrible to be forced to stop being what they are born as. And this fear of letting kids be kids doesn't help much. I would have hated the restrictions that are now in schools.

Mr. Tinsley's story echoes my own from 24 years ago - I was able to get a temporary custody order for my four year old after finding out that the mother of my child had put him in foster care, and when she was evicted from an apartment she hadn't paid rent on for 12 months, the place had no electricity, water, and there was drug paraphernalia everywhere. She ended up skipping the court hearing for final determination, and I got full custody of him, and he lived with me from then until he became an adult. My son is now getting close to 30 years old, and is happy, healthy, employed, and an upstanding member of his community. He has a step-mom who loves him (met her a year after being Mr. Mom on my own), and his biological mother has since gotten her life back on track, and I hope she's doing well. Congratulations to the Tinsleys for their persistence and success. I hope the mother gets the help she needs, and that Sawyer remembers the bravery and courage and love of his father for the rest of his life.

Yes, agreed. Stephanie articulated this very well. In my opinion it’s one of the most important factors to learn (and practice) in all social interactions. It can be truly transformative. Like many things in life, taking responsibility for one’s own behaviour/communication rather than instinctively blaming others for not acting or speaking as we would have wanted, generally leads to a better outcome all round

This guy is extremely credible and speaks well. The crazy high bars he had to clear with evidence and investigations corroborate what he is saying. I didn't see any inconsistencies or deceitfulness in his explanation. I cannot believe it could go this far, this is insanity. It was such a long, hard and noble fight and despite to pain, money, heartache and time he persevered to protect his child. Despite how bad this all was, I'm very happy to hear this story, it's a ray of light that good people can win and no matter what kind of trauma the poor kid endured at the hands of his mom, I'm so sure that the father is equipped and available for that and this kid is going to have a great life with a great role model. There is also that silver lining that the mom started this insanity immediately rather than trying to indoctrinate their son slowly over time and then having the fight during the window where permanent consequences are involved. There are other similar terrible stories that I don't even want to think about right now that end up with permanent disfigurement and loss of function and lifelong harm. Harrison, you impress me very much and to continue to fight against this after you've already been through much is admirable and honourable. If more people had your tenacity and courage, the world would be a better place.
