i have to comment to counter all the negative comments about Sam. having followed and read everything he's done since 2005, the man is incredibly consistent. all of his actions and work align with what he says he is concerned about and doing.
i can hardly think of a public figure with greater intellectual humility. for a decade he's invited incredibly smart people on his podcasts to talk about a variety of topics, usually with the purpose of learning from them.
he's not a shill as he gives away memberships to his podcast and app for free. he isn't bound to audience capture as he regularly offends the right and left, and isn't on Twitter/ doesn't pay much attention to audience feedback.
few people alive have done as much for "truth seeking" as this man, with the compassion and bravery to put himself in public and share a rare voice of reason for the benefit of everyone to think for themselves.
i can't believe we are talking about the same person when i read all the hate comments for Sam, and i can only conclude those who leave such comments have very low intellectual humility and are emotionally driven.
personally i am politically unaffiliated and i believe scientific understanding is the only framework for understanding reality, and i believe anti-science viewpoints are the cause of nearly every problem we face socially. Sam is the voice of reason, seeks out alternate viewpoints, and is constantly updating and correcting himself when he was wrong.

Did you watch the same video I did? Tom and Konstantin clearly meant to have Sam debate RFK and Bret...to no avail. Their reasoning was somewhat sound but lacked merit. Meaningful debate begins with an earnest willingness to change one's mind. This is called, "intellectual integrity". That some people will be persuaded to Sam's point of view was the earnest objective but Sam will write you off his list if you are intellectually dishonest. Sam's fan base knows this about Sam and demands it. As Sam has said more than once, "the next sentence out of your mouth could change my mind". He actually means this.

Maybe a cliche example but, Noam Chomsky has maintained a very well documented critical view of the state of Israel, as well as the history of its establishment and expansion. He has long condemned the treatment and status of the Palestinian people by the Israeli government and, more recently, the Netanyahu administration. I cant imagine that either guest would consider Chomsky a person lacking in critical thinking skills.. I wonder how each guest might approach Chomsky's perspective, and whether Harris in particular would consider platforming Chomsky and his views to be journalistically irresponsible.

However if Joe Rogan wanted to have Trump on he could just as easily have the opposition to Trump the next episode thereby levelling the "campaign commercial" scales. But he doesn't suggest that. A few-steps down from the surface Mr. Harris knows he is opinionated... he knows atheism is a "religious" choice and worldview (e.g. anti-religion religious-approach to life)... he SIMPLY prioritizes pursuing Ideal of truth-seeking-approaches as a paradigm for reasoning. If he used this methodology from within a flexible-perspective of religion, his perception of religion would change. He would simply call it a "bet/gamble" and investment of faith via intuitional reasoning. His focal concerns are... on "blind beliefs" that ignore reason etc. and refute refinements.

Huge thank you to all three of you for your contributions to sensemaking.

    • @wildbear2472

Whether one agrees with him or not, Sam's stance has sound reasoning, essentially applying the logic of the saying "Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience." RFK is no fool, but the underlying point is some people like RFK will look at a body of evidence (take flat earth for example) and argue to no end an irrational conclusion on the evidence. So if you're in a position like Sam, in which you are deciding between a meaningful discussion on one hand, and arguing with a flat earther on the other, then opting for the former is understandable.
I think Konst and Tom made a good appeal for Sam to consider bringing some of these RFK figures on to show a wider audience where some of their ideas are flawed. I tend to lean in their direction, but we would all have different standards for who we would invite on. For example, if I were a huge podcaster, I would never invite Alex Jones on because how he lied was so abhorrent.

Great debating! However, I wholly disagree with Tom and Konstantin on who should be interviewed. What if the leaders of Hamas contacted you daily for an interview? Do you really believe someone should be giving them a platform simply so all ideas are heard? I think not. Do either Tom or Konstantin have children? What a privileged life you must lead to believe that perpetuating ideas simply because they’re gaining popularity is a smart journalistic approach in today’s world. Ideas have the power to possess others….don’t give them massive platforms lightly. Also, engaging in that under the presumption that your audience will be wise enough to discern truth, in real time, or for that matter, believing you are wise enough to always do that 100% of the time is highly arrogant and utterly impossible. I do agree, it can be powerful to debunk ideas using these platforms, but I think, and what Sam is saying, is that should be done VERY specifically, and by the utmost qualified people to do so. Anyhow, thank you for a great podcast.

She’s in her mid 30s, definitely on the left and extremely sympathetic to the idea of systemic racism in policing. When I asked her of examples of unarmed black men being killed by police, I was definitely a bit shocked because she said she had a ton of examples. As we went through each example, I remained silent, she had about 9 examples. At the end I informed her that she hadn’t shown me one single example. When I explained to her she had shown me examples of black men that had been killed by police, but were in fact armed. I really appreciate the conversation, I like the pushback between Sam and Konsnatin. It's definitely worth a listen.
The major hangup I had in the discussion was how confident and definitive Sam is when passing judgment on RFK's vaccine stance. He simultaneously admits in order to debate him he would have to do extensive research while also being so sure that RFK's wrong he won't have him in for a discussion. This is a large red flag on a some personal bias for Sam.
Early in the episode, they discuss the ability to hijack the scientific community by hiring doctors such as in the case of big tobacco. This is precisely why it took so long to overturn the previous scientific consensus that smoking was not just ok but healthy for people. So in one breath, he admits that science and consensus can be highjacked but also admits this topic isn't.
This is the kind of intellectual insolation we all suffer from in some areas. "If I know all about topic X, I will not engage with individuals who believe the opposite because they don't offer me anything of value only negatives." This reveals a type of tribalism Sam finds detestable in other groups. If Sam was half as curious as he is confident in his stance perhaps a long-form discussion with RFK would reveal something of value to Sam even if his entire position doesn't change.

I just want to say 2 things. listening to sam Harris 10-15 years ago really opened my eyes and mind to the potential of honesty and how arguing with humility and compassion can be moving and powerful. the second thing is this.. in the past 5 years, Sam has taught me a more important lesson, if you are a very compassionate person and an intellectual, its very easy to become the thing you would have once been disgusted by. I'll always have massive amounts of respect for Sam, but his ability to dismiss people for reasons that are at best half baked is really unfortunate.

What's the context of the palestinian resistance to the Israeli regime? Are there any consequences to an occupation of one state of another? Did it all start on October 7th or perhaps was there a little bit of context beforehand? Mindless, squalid angle

It's "Excruciating " knowing that people who seem intelligent don't get that civilians die in war, and of course they die while being used as human shields. The context of the "resistance" is that if Hamas disarmed and signed any deals Gaza would be in great shape. of course they wont though, because their goal is the genocide of all Jews in Israel. There's no territorial claim to Gaza by Israel, so they don't "resist" the "occupation", they want more.

Where they differ is execution. Sam prefers to critically analyse, Konstantin prefers combative arguments. I must say, Konstantin needs to understand that some personality types are unable and unwilling to have combative arguments with idiots.
Sam has a calm explanatory type of logic that will simply not work against the Alex Joneses of the world. They would mock insult and yell, backed by their equally obnoxious and vociferous audiences. I can see why Sam wouldn't want to get into debates with people like that.
Konstantin should learn to be more respectfull of Sam's approach. Rather than accuse him of sitting in a castle critiquing but not changing things, he should understand that by simply sharing his views and helping people think more rationally, he is contributing to the fight towards faulty logic in his way.
