I won't say Jay's wrong for calling Bird calling his shots and making them disrespectful. I'm just saying that it was disrespectful in the very best way in a sports contest. The disrespect of, say, Laimbeer, was an entirely different critter. The difference is subtle on paper, but the difference is huge, and it can easily get muddled. JMNSHO

Laimbeer wasn't disrespectful...he was homicidal-- or at least, out to hurt, get guys out of the game, or even end their careers. Not saying his intention was to end careers (though I wouldn't put it past the lowlife); I would guess he just wanted to nullify them for the game being played, but so far as I could tell, he sure didn't care if he ended players' careers, or ruined their lives. He was a whole other order, and he wasn't just at the high end of the normal rough old time games-- he went WAY beyond that, which is why he was hated, including by Bird, who tangled with, say, Dr. J and Kareem and the Pacers' Chuck Person and never let their on-court tangles lessen his respect, admiration or liking for them.
Also, Jordan has said in interviews that he learned his trash talking from Bird!

He once belittled Jordan because all he did was become an NBA legend, but lame-beer had the skills, intelligence, and talent to be born into a rich family, which clearly made him a more important human being. Being remember as a premier NBA thug was just a bonus.

I have to agree about Lambert, he wanted to hurt you. I watched one game where Lambert sprained Robert Parrishs ankle and Larry Bird thrashed Lambert. He hated Lambert.

I love Doc Rivers telling about the meeting after "The Game" and the coach rewinding the tape "Vrrrrr, Vrrrr, Vrrrr! at least 20 times!" Cracks me up. I haven't seen anyone comment about Larry doing his version of Ali's "Rope-a-Dope". He got you thinking about what he was saying, Not keeping your head in the game you should be thinking about.

I don't think of it as trash talking, so much as I think of it as strategy. His skills were beyond sound, so he could follow through with his forecasts, which would make his opponents second guest themselves. Thus, creating a strategic plan.

I’m just answering the young mans question about if Larry had a so called “weakness “ when he was younger. He used it differently (more strategically) than it’s used in today’s game. Make no mistake he was the most clutch player ever at least in my opinion.
The only "weakness" Larry Bird had was his health due to really bad back injuries and Achilles heel problems that hampered his play and shortened his career. The last 3-4 years of his career were pure agony, but he showed up to work every day. He was a tough SOB.

I think it was the '96 finals against the Jazz and Karl "The Mailman (because he always delivers)" Malone. Late in Game 2, it's a close game, Malone is shooting free throws, Pippen leans in and whispers:"The Mailman don't deliver on Sunday."
Yes it was Sunday, yes Karl Malone missed both free throws, and yes he was rattled for the rest of the series.

LB was a beast. He'd have a field day in todays NBA! They could not handle him. Watched the NBA from the 70’s forward and outside of MJ, Bird was the one guy that every night on the local news sports segment you would see something crazy Larry would do! LJ is a great player but you never see or hear the stories those two pulled off each game!

Dominique Wilkins was awesome. Byrd would assist all day especially with Johnson. I f Byrd had the ball and Johnson was running to the basket, boom Byrd would throw Johnson the ball and he would put it in

I think you would really like to watch Larry Birds retirement ceremony video, thats where the last segment with Magic Johnson came from - they had the ceremony when there wasnt even a game that scheduled that night and it filled the Boston Garden not a single empty seat.

Maybe Lebron needs to be ahead of Bird due to longevity, maybe but peak is all Bird.
From 84-88 for 4 straight seasons, well over 300 games Bird averaged a 50/40/90 while putting up just over 28 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists per game. NOBODY touches that line across the board for even half the amount of games. Not Bron, not Jordan, not Curry.

Bird and Magic was the best era. Two greats coming along at the same time going at it on the two most storied franchises and making the NBA a staple sport. I wish Jordan would have had a rival equivalent. You just sat back and watched Jordan and knew he was going to win it somehow. He was great, but the entertainment of the direct rivalry and equal competition between Lakers and Celtics during Bird and Magic was competition of greats you rarely get to see in team sports.

Larry went to Indiana after he retired to work in the front office, after a couple of years he wanted to try coaching. His first practice he told the team I expect nothing less of each of you that i do of myself. He then went over the play book and started practicing the plays and it was 1 whistle after the other. They were so tired bird said ok foul shots, no body leaves until you each make 15 in a row. as he was walking off the court a ball rolled past him, he took off the suit jacket and put it on the clipboard picked up the ball and made 25 consecutives shots from behind the 3point line, put the ball down picked up his jacker and clipboard and walked out just looking back at the players.
Look what Bird does at 18:19 of the video. He fist bumps Magic while Magic was looking the other way. Hilatious!

I followed Bird throughout his career from Indiana State on. I followed Jordan's from the late 80s. Bird told you what he was going to do and then did it. Jordan did something amazing and then told you about it.

Went back to Boston 1979, started watching re-broadcast of '79 NCAAB FINALS in anticipation of Bird's Arrival and Start in Boston! I HAVEN'T STOPPED! Nope! Never be another Bird. You had to see Larry Bird play the whole game. Even when he didn’t have the ball. You’d watch and see him run somewhere on the court and wonder, “Why is he…?” And then BOOM - a steal! Or BOOM - a blocked shot from behind. The guy knew what the other team was going to do BEFORE the other team knew it. It was comical sometimes. Sure, he’d have a bad game once in awhile. But he’d have won FOUR rings if he hadn’t got in a bar fight during the ECF in 1985. He broke a finger in his shooting hand. It was visibly swollen later in the NBA Finals against the Lakers. And it caused him to miss one of the few clutch game winners ever in Boston. Maybe the only one. But Larry was pissed! So pissed that the next year he and his Celtics went 40-1 at the Garden; 50-1 including the Playoffs and another NBA Championship. No other team in history, not the Lakers, not the Bulls, not the Warriors have EVER gone 50-1 at home. The lone loss was early in the season (December) against Portland. Bird is the word!

The 1992 Dream Team documentary is awesome. 11 future Hall of Famers. When they played everyone was glued to their TVs. It was surreal to watch them! Larry & Magic were co-captains. The only reason anybody even watches the NBA today is that people got excited about Magic vs Bird in the NCAA, and it carried over into the pros. I'm not convinced there would have been anything left for MJ to save if it hadn't been for Magic and Bird.
I still believe that MJ would have had the same impact. He was the kind of basketball player that no one had ever seen before. That's why I think he played a huge role in the marketing and popularity of the NBA. People were going to the games and turning on the TV just to watch MJ.

@@JayHemmsSports Mike didn't get going until the mid 90's. Bird and Magic carried the league for 15 YEARS before MJ became AIR Jordan. Without them the NBA would have been a smoldering ruin by the time MJ hit his stride.
Wilkins is my all time favorite player. I'm not saying he was the best player who ever lived or anything, but I just love his style and his attitude toward the game. If I was trying to get into the NBA I'd be crafting my play from him. Part of why I like Larry Bird videos is because of how much Dominique gets brought up. While I'm here I'm also going to give a nod to KC Jones' deadpan comedy. That guy's a full on study on how to be low key hilarious.
If Larry Bird was playing today with the wimpiest rules they have where minor contacts a foul. He'll be torturing them night after night and if he didn't do it on the floor he'd be doing it from the free throw line cuz they kept telling him. I could easily see a bird getting 50 points a night. And put Wilt plan today. The single-game record be like 150, he was just that great!

Dominique may be underrated by your generation, but at the time he was playing, he was huge-- everybody knew he was amazing. Who knows, some day some young'un may be on whatever replaces UA-cam, talking about how LeBron is underrated, because he will have been forgotten by then. Well, okay, maybe not LeBron, but you know what I mean...time passes and your superstars aren't even on the succeeding generations' radar when they are thinking of the names of the greats.

Larry Bird's trash talk was more of an ongoing conversation than showing off, yelling, etc., but it was savage and unrelenting.

Jay, I have watched literally hundreds of reaction videos on my favorite athlete, Larry Legend. I must say that I enjoyed your reactions the best thus far. You have a good feel for how to do a reaction. You offered great responses, but without disturbing the video. Too often video hosts talk too much, and ruin the flow of the video by stopping it at times without any rythm or reason. It is clear that they are stopping the video due to algorithm rules. We should never get that sense. Keep up the good work young man. I’ll keep watching. You keep providing great reactions. Here is a hint from an old war dog: if you aren’t taking at least an hour preparing your video than we are getting junk. Anyone can use someone else’s video. I need to feel something unique about a reaction. Please don’t waste my time.

Great content Jay. I'm a Bulls fan. I hated Larry Bird, we could NEVER beat him, even with Michael. I still have nightmares of him sweeping us in the playoffs - Twice. Do I respect him? Hell yeah, above all others. He was the most clutch player in NBA history. Pat Riley said he'd choose MJ to take the last shot to win the game, but Larry to take the last shot to save his life. I have MJ #1 GOAT, Larry Legend 1A!

I remember seeing Arsenio Hall talking about bird and demonstrating how ignorant he was, as well as racist in my opinion. He said Larry bird was the “great white hype, and if he was black he’d just be an average player”. I couldn’t stop laughing because not long after that Magic responded to it in an interview in which what Arsenio said was brought up. Magic said either he didn’t know basketball, or he was an idiot.
I see you have another Bird video two weeks newer than this one, but I haven't watched it yet. There's a Bird video on YT, sorry but I can't recall which one, but it has a lot of Birds stats from college and all the way through his pro career.

Looks like the YT police have censored ever little suggestion of a bad word in these videos, really stupid none of it was even offensive.
Just checking stat lines - Larry is top fifty or just outside that in ppg, assists (52nd all time), steals, rebounds (55th all time), and free-throw percentage. Very few are in that list of having stats spread across many aspects of the game and being elite in them all. Take Jordan - he has ppg and steals. Wilt has points and rebounds (stats are a little light - would have blocks too I'm sure if they tracked them during his time). But even the best of the best rarely had more than a couple in that top fifty or even top hundred - Bird has five stats that are among the best ever - that's pretty crazy when you think about it. And then there are those that think he wasn't that great!
I mean he has more rebounds per game than Patrick Ewing, Yao Ming and Antetokounmpo!!! 🤯
