Huge fan of the Bird man... his competition with Magic is legendary, but IMHO if you haven't watched the documentary "A Courtship of Rivals", you don't fully understand how their lives intertwined, and what it did for the NBA at the time. I think it can rightly be said that they saved the NBA, and paved the way for so many great superstars who came later. Those of us who were watching the NBA at that time were privileged to watch that Celtic/Laker rivalry unfold, which gave us some of the best moments in NBA history.

To give credence to what Joe Dumars said consider this - in the first 9 years of Bird's career in games Bird played for the Celtics, the Celtics won 534 games and lost 177 games of the 711 total = a win % of 75.1% . I believe this could be the highest win % of any player for a 9 year stretch. Bill Russell's win % was 68%. Magic during the same 9 year stretch was 74.3% = 475 wins and 164 lost games of the 639. And Larry played in the stronger East and never had a teammate as good as Kareem. Bird as a rookie went to a 29 win team and with 1 player change to the roster in ML Carr and a new coach in Bill Fitch, Bird was the main reason Boston won 61 games = a 32 game turnaround = the biggest single season turn around in NBA history. Look at what Bird did at Indiana State = a small school with zero basketball history!!! We all love this game and thank you for sharing this!!

I cant tell you how many games Bird won at the end with either a clutch shot, an insane assist, a block, or steal or whatever. If you double/tripled covered.. he found the open man... you leave him alone, and he made you pay. Poor shooting night and he would focus on the rest of his game.. However, The amount of stories about Bird's trash talking about what he was going to do before doing it and then doing exactly what he said is unmatched by any other player in NBA history.

Bob Gibson of the MLB St Louis Cardinals once told a teammate that was making nice with a first basemen after reaching when he returned to the dugout, “he’s the enemy, don’t make nice with him”. Paraphrased.
Hitters feared standing in the hitters box. They definitely only crowded the plate once!!

Larry was the man and I loved the old Celtics team. Players today could not play with players from the 70s and 80s they played so hard.

Larry's college was playing mine and we heard they had a future all American on their team. During warm ups we tried to guess which black player he was. Well we were wrong. He beat our league champion team and set our arena scoring record. He was a beast! Peace from Northern Michigan.

I'm a stagehand and we were putting in an event in the Gardens at one end and Larry came out with a big rack of basketballs and started shooting from half court. We all stopped working to watch....he made 38 shots before he missed one. One of the greats.

The great coach Pat Reilly said “ if I’m gonna pick a player to take a shot to win the game I’ll take Michael Jordan but if I’m gonna pick a player to take a shot to save my life I’m picking Larry Bird” nuff said!!!!!

I grew up in Boston in the 1980’s, Ive seen bird play, and i feel blessed to actually see some of the greatest players in that awesome era! The Celtics lakers rivalry was the baddest basketball i ever seen. The 86 Celtics was the best basketball team ever…In my slightly biased opinion. Lol. It was a great time to be a basketball fan.

Larry had a MOTOR. It's why he always excelled at the end of games throughout his career. He had one of the most underrated attributes in all sports, stamina. He was laser focused at the end of games because he was highly conditioned and didn't suffer from fatigue as much as everyone else.

    Larry.
Got to see him sitting out, in a VERY 80's sweater- From the Budweiser Sky Box at The Gah-den, circa 1991. I have little memory of the rest of the game, except Celts won.

I saw him in 1979 in Amarillo Texas at Amarillo civic center when Indiana State played West Texas State University. January 1980. I loved watching Larry play and I loved basketball.
