I think this album is DT's most direct homage to Rush. Listening to John P. speak with Geddy on That Metal Show, you could tell how big of a Rush fan he is and this album unleashes that appreciation.
I am John Petrucci, of Dream Theater, I also made several of the Rush Albums. I have something like 600 planes jets and heliocopters stashed around the world. I need to collect them, before I break Victoria, from Scenes from a memory 2, out of her glass prison. Would you like to get a free plane or jet or heliocopter? I will teach you to fly. All I need is pilots to help me collect the planes, heliocopters and Jets from around the world. I am giving most of them away for free. But I will need atleast 1 Jet, to make sure, Victoria, can get her revenge on David Jonathan Taylor, after I break her out of her glass prison. Joey Jordinson was the witness, that witnessed me attach her spirit to glass. He commited suicide last year, because I still hadn't gotten a body to replace Victoria's body, when David blew my sled out of the sky, with a jet and a missle, that caused her to disperse her body, to form a protective shield, to protect Joey and myself. David has tried to kill me at least 100 times since then. Succeeding several times, before I was revived in the hospital later.
Some of the beautiful drumming I've ever heard. It's as if the parts he architects for the songs have their own cymatic shape, or crystalline structure. Most drummers don't play as clean, honoring the time, so we're not used to experiencing such a thing. Numbers don't lie, and he is a math wizard.
I believe personally...that progressive metal is easily one of the finest accomplishments of man. Up there next to the symphonies of Mozart, Bach, and the great composers...this is a modern version of precisely the same: a combination of skill, passion, and most importantly...love.
I think Paul O'Neill said it best when he said Mozart was the world's first rock star and Beethoven was the world's first heavy metal star. He always said there was no way someone like Beethoven would not use electric guitars and synthesizers/keyboards if he were alive today.
Best band of all time. Most talanted band of all time. Every single person in the band is amazing, yes including labrie. IMO he is one of the best singers in music history, with his diversity and wide range. And if you are a singer I'm sure you'd know that alot of DT's catalog have songs in which the vocals are extremely hard to sing (Innocence Faded, Learning To Live, & Another Day for example). And for his performance today, let's face it... he's nearly 50 years old (correct me if I'm wrong) and has a family to take care of, and honestly I still think he is a great singer (live as well). The problem about DT fans is that they complain.and say that want something new, but when they come out with great music like this, they criticize and whine about it. I'm tired of all the criticism and just want to listen to the music in peace. If there is anything bad about DT, it's their fans. Please, do us a favor and stop complaining.
Will Horton Why would anyone doubt Labrie in the first place? Sure he doesn't have much say in DT's material, but he's still an accomplished lyricist and musician. If people don't believe me just listen to some of his solo albums, great stuff.
The video is not bad at all - the main thing I like is that the band has learnt that its fans want to see the bandmembers playing, not just some actors 'emoting' to DT's music.
If you are talking about The Enemy Inside, it was my understanding the band wanted to make that video about the Save a Warrior program instead of give focus to the band. Petrucci felt really strong about the subject. Most of the videos they have mad focus on the band. Going back to Another day, Lie, Pull me under and even recent ones like Rite of Passage and On the Backs of Angels they all focus on the band. I don't mind the videos but most of the time I don't watch them, I play the music on the background. I enjoy the cinematic stuff on their live show but I could do without them since they being doing that recently.
Every since I was a kid, whenever I would hear music like this, I would collapse into a catatonic state of euphoria. I thought it was simply a phenomenon on a song by song basis. Now I know that it know it has a name and that name is PROG METAL.
I must say that there has never been a bad DT song. The very essence of talent always pours from their soul. Mangini is a beast no matter what the naysayers say. Very proud DT fan here for life!!!!
LaBrie is one of my favorite rock voices - always know when he is singing and he just nails those hooks - Images and Words was one of the best early 90's rock albums
Beautiful 80s sounding gem, synths sounded like ‘we built this city on rock and roll’ played over ‘rush’ guitar and bass and drum parts... with Labrie making it sound like DT
Myriadman The entire album reminds me of the earlier stages of Rush. I mean just listen to Illumination Theory. It sounds so much like Fountain of Lamneth.
My favorite band hands down for many reasons. You can be inspired as a musician by any of these band members as they are each masters of their instruments.
I would not expect you felt unnoticed and ignored Better to rise above the clouds Than be a stranger in the crowd All that you protected doesn't matter anymore Rather be stripped of all your pride Than watch your dreams be cast aside You are caught up in your gravity Glorifying stardom Singing your own praise You live without shame You're digging up a gold mine Standing on the sidelines Watching through the looking glass You are not content with being nameless and unknown Trying to rise above the fray Eager to give it all away Some will not admit that fifteen minutes have expired Too much attention much too soon Don't see you walking on the moon You are caught up in your gravity Bathing in the spotlight Imitating fame You live without shame You're digging up a gold mine Standing on the sidelines Watching through the looking glass You are caught up in your gravity Glorifying madness Singing your own praise You live without shame You're digging up a gold mine Standing on the sidelines Watching through the looking glass You live without shame You're digging up a gold mine Standing on the sidelines Watching through the looking glass
This reminds me of the story of people ringing up a radio station after they played Working Man and asking when the new Zeppelin record comes out. Sometimes I wonder if we're all hearing the same things! At best I'd call it reminiscent (intentionally of course) but it veers off into the corny chord sequences that DT so adore! :)
Totally! Rush is obviously one of the influences... JP usually takes a few albums to the studio such as Pink Floyd, Rush etc to get some inspiration. I've seen this in a documentary.
Totalmente de acuerdo, toda su música es increíble, y este disco no es la excepción, se que es bastante criticado, pero en mi opinión es de los mejores 🖤
I've been a fan of Dream Theater since I first saw Pull Me Under on my grainy TV in 1993. Through the ups & downs of band mates, and the ups & downs of corporate conformity and returning individuality...I am still just as amazed as I ever was at the talent and uniqueness of this band. Even their "not as good" stuff is still pretty frikkin good. The idea of a world void of DT actually makes me sad. Long live the Kings. Not just Prog kings.....but music Kings.
I love the emotions and the simplicity in this video. I don't know if you agree with me but to me it has this kind of oldschool feel which is great and suites this band.
This HAS to be one of my favorite albums. Every song is progressive beyond belief...and most of the songs sound like the earlier stages of Rush. This sounds like Limelight, Illumination Theory sounds like Fountain of Lamneth, etc.
this song has a very special place in my heart. in 2016 i began properly exploring my music taste at 13/14. for my 14th birthday i got guitar hero live and this song was on it, completely fell in love with dream theater from that moment on. always come back to them from time to time to revel in lost time, i miss those days. discovering my independence and formulating my individuality through music was so much fun, the countless memories and stories i have to tell could fill a novel.
Did God create those planets and musicians ? HELL YEAH! They are called DRERAM THEATHER! As religion say's prove me wrong otherwise I'm right. DREAM THEATER is GOD(at least to me).
The Looking Glass is so much a musical arrangement with Alex Lifeson in mind. When this album, mainly this song came out , it just blew me away as did Breaking all Illusions, Lines in the sand and Overture 1928-Strange Deja Vu, These are some of my all time favorites of Dream Theater The Looking glass solo is so perfect complementing the song's passion as James does a masterful job singing his heart out. Well done and timeless!
3:16 sounds like Mangini and Vai Jamming from their older stuff. Love that Guitar tone. Mangini is one-of-a kind, too, as his technique is absolutely flawless.
El otro dia íbamos manejando para Orlando Florida, y puse in the name of God,y mi mujer me dice, wow, nunca los había escuchado. 😅 una de mis bandas favoritas.
In this song I felt like the Dream & a Day got united. This song represents the long-awaited comeback of a "Dream/Fantasy" tune (atmosphere) ['85-'94] into the present "Day" of the Dream Theater's work ['05-'11]. Also, (if you picked it) a fusion of multiple elements(a unique song signature)/DT styles/guitar effects + others band songs from way back '85 TO THE PRESENT. A Great combined song!!! YYYEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!
Grandi! Un pezzo motivante che fa correre i brividi sulla schiena come già tante volte mi è successo nel passato. La vostra musica è energia allo stato puro e chi la sa ascoltare trova la forza che ti dà quella marcia in più. Suonate fino a 120 anni mi raccomando!
How can people blindly insult this band? Maybe its because they don't understand some things about music. This band is so creative because of all the time changes they deal with. Not a lot of people write in 5/4 phrases, or 7/4, or 7/8, but they constantly switch to these weird time signatures on their songs and makes very good original patterns with in the meter. I'm just surprised they can make it all sound as if the time isnt changing sometimes. I'll sit listening to them trying to figure out what they switched to there, or what that fill pattern was there, etc. Not to mention amazing sound quality. There aint no autotune here.
I've started listening Dream Theater last month and I have something to say. I'm really surprised with this band and the way they play...Really love them!!!
So dissapointing to see how hateful people in the rock and metal community are. Whatever happened to the brotherhood that started this type of music, i love DT and i think they're one of the most underrated bands of all time. If we ever want this Justin Bieber/Katy Parrie BS to go away we need to stop this hateful attitude towards bands that dont sound like the sub genre of rock that you think every band should sound like. I for one love the diversity in all genres of rock and metal cause it keeps things interesting, i would think others would feel the same.
You're living in a idealized fantasy world. The real world doesn't work like that. Also, popular music corporately controlled. Your dreams for world peace will never happen.
As a seasoned musician I can attest that we grow and mature. Should we simply drop anchor in the harbor of "wash, rinse and repeat" would we not quickly become very stagnant in our musical scope? I personally have tremendous respect for the growth that DT are displaying here. Does this have a Rush feel? Yes. But it is widely known that Rush have always been a big influence in the musical foundation of DT. It is the diversity that DT have always shown that keeps me coming back time after time. John Petrucci has always challenged me as a guitarist to keep pushing the envelope. This album is no different. I want to buy a DT album and hear DT as I have come to know them-revolutionary and innovative. This album does just that.
+SuperCrywolf1 i think they stopped maturing after octavarium. The following albums have been more of a game of "spot the influence" rather than a progression in their music, but thats just me.
You have a very valid point. I must confess that I do periodically find myself listening and noting that the influence of a particular song becomes quite obvious. I can definitely hear the hear the Rush influence. If one had to cop an influence one could certainly do much worse. Wouldn't you agree?
SuperCrywolf1 Yea. Since i like Rush it doesnt really bother me. I just feel their writing isnt as refined as the earlier albums, mostly due to them being contracted for an album every 2 years, which started around Octavarium/SC.
Saw these guys live last night in Seattle. I will never miss another concert of theirs again. They are absolutely the most professional band I have seen in a while.. What a show.. I'm still wanting to hear more tonight!
Another great example, a 5 minutes long prog song can be just as amazing, as a 15 minutes long. One of my fave DT songs ever. Period! Brilliant chorus!
UNLIMITED THANKS FOR THE REALITY FANTASTIC MUZIC MASTERITY! HIGHLIGHTS OF HEALTH AND LUCK DURING MANY-MANY YEARS! "DREAM THEATER" IS THE BEST FOREVER, BACKGROUND!!!
This entire album is like Sprite for me. I never really crave it, but when I actually listen to it, I'm like "Man, this was such a good idea!" This album is great, but it takes some time to seep in.
listening to a mixtape/ collection of metal i had borrowed from a friend,i remembering being blown away by every instrumental pieces, the detail and variations in that song..quickly grabbed the Cassette cover to find the name of the band it was Dream Theatre i could never forget yet could fairly express that immense feeling i got bt for sure i know it was real good and rare as the world is now musically
Great Band, Excellent Musicians, Nothing but good tight music at its best. There is no way somebody can criticize this band, the duo they do with the bass player and specially with the keyboard player are something else, I did not even heard that from Rush ever, I would say new age Yes or Emerson Lake and Palmer if any. Congratulation guys.
***** No just this song. And I know they were influenced by Rush. Every single Progressive band ever has been influened by Rush, Yes, King Crimson and Genesis :pp
The minute I heard this song I thought the same thing...total Rush feel. However, once you key in on JP's guitar and and JR's mastery, you realize this is something Rush could not accomplish - Rush just doesn't have the individual talent that DT does.
true on the individual talent as far as rush goes, but rush always will have the edge as far as writing with better melodies and lyrical content. dts lyrics are usually verbatim where rush lyrics have atleast two different levels. plus rush can layer there instruments better which gives them a more classical sound. cant compare the bands really. 5 members versus 3. geddy does the work of 3 himself on stage. and alexs riffs are some of the best ever....
Amazing band! Seen them many times in concerts, music craft in live is just out of this world. I have seen King-X opening for them many years ago, when DT came out, I thought, wow King-X sounded like some little garage band! Have been listening to them since James joined. Always one of my favorite bands of all time.
Awesome song, awesome band, finally get to hear myung play, and better music content than black sabbath (nowadays). I still think this music video is better than the enemy inside...
I downloaded a collection of my favorite DT songs and now have 96 songs coming in at 14.2 hours. About the time it takes to drive from Tulsa to Vail Co. They have weed shops in Vail. ROAD TRIP!!!
Thank you for writing Shorter songs DT! I think the modern busy world demands it as a long time fan i have kids now and cannot sit and listen to your epics or any long drawn out albums anymore,Rush saved their career making shorter songs and gained a wider audience and was able to tour less and play to more people. I love DT but IMO it is time to do the same. i would love a long album but in much shorter servings. Bless you all and take care!
The drum parts fit perfectly into the song. No doubt Mangini is brilliant!
I think this album is DT's most direct homage to Rush. Listening to John P. speak with Geddy on That Metal Show, you could tell how big of a Rush fan he is and this album unleashes that appreciation.

That bass breakdown is from worshipping at the Temples of Syrinx!
This one has Limelight elements throughout.
Nothing new. They have a long history of ripping off superior bands and masking that thievery behind 1 million notes/minute.
2:17 John is just like "Duuuuude.... whoaaaaaaaaaa...." at that drumfill at 2:13
Best DT-Song since 1992!

The video is not bad at all - the main thing I like is that the band has learnt that its fans want to see the bandmembers playing, not just some actors 'emoting' to DT's music.
Also huge kudos for leaving Petrucci's solo in this version!

Rush - Limelight?
Darken Heners Yeah, Limelight.... A beautyfull song!
Myriadman The entire album reminds me of the earlier stages of Rush. I mean just listen to Illumination Theory. It sounds so much like Fountain of Lamneth.
not only the intro - the solo is 100% Rush as well.
They are public fans of Rush, Petrucci more than anyone
My favorite band hands down for many reasons. You can be inspired as a musician by any of these band members as they are each masters of their instruments.
That’s including James
I would not expect you felt unnoticed and ignored
Better to rise above the clouds
Than be a stranger in the crowd
All that you protected doesn't matter anymore
Rather be stripped of all your pride
Than watch your dreams be cast aside
You are caught up in your gravity
Glorifying stardom
Singing your own praise
You live without shame
You're digging up a gold mine
Standing on the sidelines
Watching through the looking glass
You are not content with being nameless and unknown
Trying to rise above the fray
Eager to give it all away
Some will not admit that fifteen minutes have expired
Too much attention much too soon
Don't see you walking on the moon
You are caught up in your gravity
Bathing in the spotlight
Imitating fame
You live without shame
You're digging up a gold mine
Standing on the sidelines
Watching through the looking glass
You are caught up in your gravity
Glorifying madness
Singing your own praise
You live without shame
You're digging up a gold mine
Standing on the sidelines
Watching through the looking glass
You live without shame
You're digging up a gold mine
Standing on the sidelines
Watching through the looking glass
If it weren't for the vocals, I'd have thought it was Rush.

Dream Theater=Rush+Iron Maiden
Drums spot on.
LaBrie sounds so natural in this album, his voice is stunning.
i love this band. their chops are so deep on every instrument. Such a refreshing thing to see in this day of make believe "Artists".

This HAS to be one of my favorite albums. Every song is progressive beyond belief...and most of the songs sound like the earlier stages of Rush. This sounds like Limelight, Illumination Theory sounds like Fountain of Lamneth, etc.
Their songs were always playing on my father's car radio, which made me who always heard them ring in my ears.
I think I even seen Petrucci in awe of Mangini's drums fills.

Just love how retro this song sounds. Very 80's which I absolutely love!! I wanna see more of their future music go in a direction like this!!
Fantastich nummer ,live gezien ,de max .
I thought I've sold my soul to Death Metal, but i was wrong, Dream Theater always in my heart.
thank God for DREAM THEATER..🤘

This song represents the long-awaited comeback of a "Dream/Fantasy" tune (atmosphere) ['85-'94] into the present "Day" of the Dream Theater's work ['05-'11]. Also, (if you picked it) a fusion of multiple elements(a unique song signature)/DT styles/guitar effects + others band songs from way back '85 TO THE PRESENT. A Great combined song!!!
Soaring, beautiful song, with an unmistakable Limelight feel to it. What a loving tribute to Rush!
The guitar solo is fire!!!! 🤘🤘🔥🔥🔥
Saw these guys live last night in Seattle. I will never miss another concert of theirs again. They are absolutely the most professional band I have seen in a while.. What a show.. I'm still wanting to hear more tonight!
2:13 that drumming :O best band ever. hands down.
Wow wow wow, solid songwriting, vocal lines...buying the album tomorrow
DT.. you are back ! Love this old days song.. :-D
Another great example, a 5 minutes long prog song can be just as amazing, as a 15 minutes long. One of my fave DT songs ever. Period! Brilliant chorus!
John petrucci is one of the best in the music business.
The best
Best clip of the band!
Very good and welcome to Finland guys
This album is really growing on me, and this is my favorite track...sounds like Images!
2024, still here!
UNLIMITED THANKS FOR THE REALITY FANTASTIC MUZIC MASTERITY! HIGHLIGHTS OF HEALTH AND LUCK DURING MANY-MANY YEARS! "DREAM THEATER" IS THE BEST FOREVER, BACKGROUND!!!
when you already have a song called ''The Mirror''
Mr. Foxhound You sir made my day. Thank you
Best comment.
Petar Petrov ok, thats pretty damn funny..
different context.
Two parts of a trilogy perhaps...ha ha.
This song is life. I love this band. Everything about every one of their songs is heaven to my ears
This entire album is like Sprite for me. I never really crave it, but when I actually listen to it, I'm like "Man, this was such a good idea!"
This album is great, but it takes some time to seep in.
listening to a mixtape/ collection of metal i had borrowed from a friend,i remembering being blown away by every instrumental pieces, the detail and variations in that song..quickly grabbed the Cassette cover to find the name of the band it was Dream Theatre i could never forget yet could fairly express that immense feeling i got bt for sure i know it was real good and rare as the world is now musically
2:13 mangini amazing
Great Band, Excellent Musicians, Nothing but good tight music at its best. There is no way somebody can criticize this band, the duo they do with the bass player and specially with the keyboard player are something else, I did not even heard that from Rush ever, I would say new age Yes or Emerson Lake and Palmer if any. Congratulation guys.
I read a review calling this song "A tribute to a certain canadian band, Rush".
Holy shit they were right O_o
***** No just this song. And I know they were influenced by Rush. Every single Progressive band ever has been influened by Rush, Yes, King Crimson and Genesis :pp
Pull me Under :pp
Helpful comment. thanks
The first DT song in many years giving me goose bumps. A great song, melodic and touching!.
El mejor grupo de la historia de la música, son increíbles
No será mucho?
BEST song in the album. So well written, so rush like!
su toque suave me gusto, no necesita ser tan agresivo su rock para ser bueno en su genero !!!
all they do is wonderful, musically speaking!!
La mejor banda de todas las que he oído
Amazing band! Seen them many times in concerts, music craft in live is just out of this world. I have seen King-X opening for them many years ago, when DT came out, I thought, wow King-X sounded like some little garage band! Have been listening to them since James joined. Always one of my favorite bands of all time.
Like a blending of the best qualities of Rush and Impelitteri
Long time..this gives hope again..about DT....gives vibes from Awake and early times with DT....☝️
Love this rush influence, sounds amazing
Such a great song. Unlike other bands, Dream Theater always stays great.
Best band of all time, of all the galaxies ... indiscutivelmente..kkkkkkkkkk
yea: )
Thank you for writing Shorter songs DT! I think the modern busy world demands it as a long time fan i have kids now and cannot sit and listen to your epics or any long drawn out albums anymore,Rush saved their career making shorter songs and gained a wider audience and was able to tour less and play to more people. I love DT but IMO it is time to do the same. i would love a long album but in much shorter servings. Bless you all and take care!
This literally sounds like an 80's melodic metal song :) Really good song Dream Theater!
nice sound! as usual...
The best feeling story of john petrucci guitar adlib solo😍😍😍😍
Riff like Limelight of Rush, but the music is amazing!
