DT fan for 22 years now. Good song. Top 5 or 6 mellower songs. But then its hard to say because so many of their songs are heavy for a while, then lighten up, and get heavy again. One of the things I love about them. They're not metal. They're not rock. They are..... Dream Theater.
Long before the colors start to bleed I can see the painting come alive Clever like an angel in disguise Moving in and out of reach If the candle lights this crooked path Like a lighthouse peering through the haze I will find the river through the rain And I'll reach the water's edge Shed your light on me Be my eyes when I can't see Shed your light on me Be my guide so I can see The bigger picture Like a moth burned by the fire And driven to the flame (Prophecies' a blessing and a curse) I must bare this cross alone There's no one else to blame With each treasure found Another shipwreck's washed ashore I am carried by the current On a slow and steady course Shed your light on me Be my eyes when I can't see Shed your light on me Be my guide so I can see The bigger picture What If caught in a moment I get lost and can't find my way What if all along I was wrong In every turn, In every way Would you talk me off the ledge Or let me take the fall Better to try and fail Then to never try at all You look but cannot see Talk but never speak You live but cannot breathe See but don't believe Wounds that never heal A heart that cannot feel A dream that's all too real A stare as cold as steel I've listened to the stories of resentment and disdain I've looked into the empty eyes of anger, fear, and shame I've taken blood from every stone And traveled every road When I see the distant lights illuminate the night Then I will know I am home
4:19 haunting and beautiful bridge - extremely emotional moment of the song, and James really puts his heart into his vocals. This song creates tears - just so deep and reflective.
Bridge better than many choruses they made. Dream Theater sometimes have two or more outstading melodies in one same song, but lacks good melodies in other ones.
without a doubt one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard in my life. this album from start to finish represents everything DT has always tried to give us
I’ve listened to the stories of resentment and disdain I’ve looked into the empty eyes of anger, fear, and shame I’ve taken blood from every stone And traveled every road When I see the distant lights illuminate the night Then I will know I am home
'Surrender to Reason' and 'The Bigger Picture' are criminally underrated. Melodic, progressive, heavy- and no extended jamming or solo sections. They would have been loved if included on older albums.
this is the 1st dt song that i listen mainly to hear james singing. it is also one of my favorites on this album, so hats off to him. the final part is absolutely wonderful.
I love how Dream Theater can just flip the switch from something dark and technical like The Enigma Machine to something SO GOD DAMN GORGEOUS like The Bigger Picture. How? How can any band be so talented? These guys are easily one of the most talented groups I have ever heard, and I am proud to be a fan!!
I feel like people are giving Dream Theater too much flak. They still manage to retain a unique sound and, most importantly, on other songs, Mangini has finally proven himself to be a fantastic new asset to the band. To anyone saying they have a commercialized sound: Illumination Theory. Honestly, Dream Theater have managed to retain their touch and after 28 years, they still manage to make top-quality music in all aspects. My hat's off to them.
People were iffy prior to Rudess joining back in 1999 as well, but he very quickly proved himself as one of the greatest living keyboardists and no one complained one bit after hearing his work on Metropolis Pt. 2. Mangini is a great drummer, yes, but my issue is that Dream Theater simply got worse after Portnoy left. Their music is still fine, but it's never felt quite as inspired as in their golden years. DT from 1999-2009 is frankly all I can bring myself to care about. They have good songs before and after, but never have they been as consistent as they were throughout that decade.
@@greyleaf interesting... id have said that from 2007-2019 is by far their best period of time. systematic chaos, BCASL,ADTOE,self titled, the astonishing which is just remarkable, and the awesome distance over time.. I felt that train of thought and octavarium were very forgettable albums. the 2 prior however are quite the opposite 😎
I agree just enjoy people..I like unique. Here in kansas the music is the same thing over and over . If it were not for you tube , the musicians, and the people who share this I would be crazy. Listen to a kansas radio station.
The part at 5:11 is seriously one of my all time favorite moments of any song ever written. That part pretty much sums up me reflecting upon my own life. Does anyone else feel this way?
I always felt like Dream Theater's songs were always about ideas that the real musicians behind these compositions were contemplating or going through. It's an awesome way of them sharing their story, just like a book, it gives you this certain feel. It's alive and communicative. Music truly is magic.
Dream Theater seriously gives you these moments they go from crazy riffs to silence to where you just... think.... it's beautiful and then they suck you right back in 5 seconds later it's like they toy with our emotions in the best way possible
I love that dream theater can write really positive and moving songs and still be a rock band. Most rock bands these days have a lot of sick and morbid lyrics, not dream theater for sure
while the album in general is a positive one leading into illumination theory, this song isn't exactly positive, as it's describing someone who is doubting every choice he's ever made, because the result is someone who is no longer capable of feeling anything but resentment and disdain, anger, fear, and pain. 'wounds that never heal, a heart that cannot feel, a dream that's all too real, a stare as cold as steel.' Illumination theory follows this song nicely, the album art is a broken light-bulb with an all white background. The person here is symbolized as the broken light-bulb, so longer able to illuminate himself, no longer able to produce light, a broken person who can only feel negative emotions. The background is pure white because in illumination theory he finds everything he was looking for, and the light-bulb is completely illuminated, even though it's still broken, it's being surrounded by light. Anyway, there's tons of deep meanings in the songs in this album, and i'm glad dream theater is still doing stuff like this. I am kind of a person like this who has trouble feeling anything other than negative emotions.. a 'broken light-bulb', so hopefully I can find my own illumination someday.
+phantomofoaktown Oh Dream Theater has their share of sick and morbid lyrics....but not this album, you're right. They're going for something more uplifting.
an extremely moving song, seriously an amazing piece of work. It's hard to describe what this song does, but all of you know exactly what i am talking about.
It's so weird. When I first got this album I was like..."eh, underwhelming". But then I went back 6 years later and I am totally in love with it. Dream Theater is the only band I know that can do this to me. This is probably the third time it's happened since I discovered them back in 2003.
I actually love the drum sound. and yes I am a guitarist, so I have the bias of one, yet something about the drum sound feels... unique to me. Like it fits with the intense emotion of the song.
That melody, and that ending, we just love you John.... You *LOOK* but *CAN* *NOT* *SEE* ... You *LIVE* but *CAN'T* *BREATHE* ... *SEE* but *DON'T* *BEliEVE* ... *WOUNDS* that *NEVER* *HEAL* ... *A* *HEART* that *CAN* *NOT* *FEEL* ... *A* *DREAM* that's s *ALL* *TOO* *REAL* .... *A* *STARE* *AS* *COLD* *AS* *STEEL* .... This album has been for some reason very underrated by the elite prog community (though I always value their opinion), but I think it's stunning, rock on DT \m/
I never liked DREAM THEATRE but this whole album was fkng so sikk ... in truth I generally have a hard time with the singers voice but I cannot deny this ALBUMS ABSOLUTE BRILLIANCE... Even the newest ASTONISHING album has sum great qualities and I'm not a connesuir of what makes DT great I just know these songs were pretty fkng stuck in my head from enemy within to looking glass these melodic arrangements are fkng gorgeous... opeth is a band I like because it challenges me , I'm able to embrace a lot of music from Kiss ALIVE to WEATHER REPORT to SEX PISTOLS , TO BLACK SABBATH AND NOW THIS ... This album was insane
Glad you enjoyed the album +DEVILMUSIC Opeth are probably the most talented "Art Metal" band of the era - tall claim yes, I would say that confidently, their eclecticism and precision is very hard to match, their entire albums are works of art. Very closely followed by Tool, DT maudinoftheWell, Pain of Salvation, Devin Townsend and a handful of others. For Dream Theater - Essentials are "A Change of Seasons", "Awake", "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence" and "Octavarium"! Rich passion and musicianship through and through.
There's nothing wrong with that snare drum. In fact , it sounds alot like the snare effects that Mike Portnoy with use in previous recordings with Dream Theater before he left. Mike Mangini had some pretty big shoes to fill when he replaced Mike Portnoy (one of the best drummers in the world). That being said I think Mike Mangini is doing a terrific job and has done what a lot of other drummers only dream of doing in keeping those crazy sick melodic ideas spilling out (which mangini did have alot of input on this new album) and that is picking up with Mike Portnoy left off and keeping Dream Theater's style and music alive. They couldn't have picked a better person to do so and from the looks of it , an overall great person. great job Mr. Mike Mangini. Very impressed.
this song has the biggest snare issue. i like the sound itself, but it cuts out too quickly, like they put way too much compression on it or something. overall i love the way the album sounds. i'm happy with it either way, this is one of my favorite songs on the album
Mike Portnoy never sampled his drum for any song with Dream Theater. This album has 100% sampled drums. They aren't the natural tones of the drum, they are samples being triggered by a sensor fed into a module.
This album is so beautiful and it was more amazing to discover it during Dream Theater's concert in Paris (31/01/2014). To discribe how brilliant this band is : younger I hated metal, I thought it was just noises and one day my father bought Systematic Chao and it makes me love this kind of music. Guys you've change my life !
If Dream Theater knows how to do anything, it's polarize their fanbase. I guess it all depends on what album you became a fan with. I think it's stellar. Best album since Octavarium
I didn't get into DT until a 2 or 3 years ago but one thing I have found is that hasn't been one song by them I have not liked thanks for all the great music guys
When this song first came out, I really really hate the drum sound. It sounded too punchy and thick, i thought to myself. But then I saw many drummers played this song with a thinner sounding snare, and then the song sounded... wrong. Then i realized (two years after first listen) that amongst many things, Mangini's drums is the beauty of this song.
salute for Dream Theater, John Petrucci, John Myung, Jordan Rudess, James Labrie, and Mike Mangini (Mike Portnoy, Derek Sherinian , kevin moore, Charlie Dominici, and chris collins) you all my influences in music since childhood my father always play the songs Dream Theater, I remember dream theater song that was first entered into my ear that song called "home", and I started looking about Dream Theater, to this day I still enjoy a great melody touch in Dream Theater
Nice... From 0:37 to 1:40, on the keys, right before James start to sing every line, JR it's already touching the final melody... "See but don't believe..." That one...
Excellent song from their latest studio album. One of the best songs on the CD. So what if this song sounds a bit commercial. Take for example the FALLING INTO INFINITY album. You have TAKE AWAY MY PAIN on the same CD as BURNING MY SOUL. Also on that same CD is ANNA LEE right after JUST LET ME BREATHE. DT has many different extremely talented sides. Another exmaple is SIX DEGREES OF INNER TURBLENCE. You have WAR INSIDE MY HEAD on the same CD as SOLITARY SHELL. Any DT fan who has all of their CD's knows they have an aggressive heavy side and a lighter melodic side. Even Led Zeppelin had that.
I'm still a fan. Just another step in their career. Very few albums I've listened to that I LOVE right away, always takes time to grow on you, to figure out the nuances of any song.
This album gets a 10/10 from me. The production of this album is fantastic. I dont understand the gripe about the snare drum sound. If you listen to old dream theater albums, a lot of times the snare almost sounded like a bongo. The songwriting on this album easily surpasses ADTOE, BCSL and SC. Illumination Theory is perfection. They actually used themselves as influences in this album. They looked back to when they first started as a group and kind of got back to that sound. GREAT ALBUM!
This album is spectacular, too bad I went unprepared to yesterday's concert... Only thing: I kinda miss Portnoy... I mean: Mangini is a great drummer and did some great job in this album. But if I listen to 6:00 (I mean the song from Awake, not the minute in this one) I feel that 'touch' of Portnoy I like more.
It really brings me back to 2013 when i was a child goin back to my hometown and my father plays this in my car while my mother and my sister slept in the backseat and we enjoy this song in the night :)
Cuz it sucks .... the real DT fan ,we kinda look away since BCaSL .mangini is a great musician ,but he doesn't fit , anyways petrucci and Rudess as usual awesome .
VetoSchwarz There is no such thing as a "real DT fan" and I guarantee you that, should this distinctive group existed, you would not belong to it. Mangini not only fits, but raises the bar of the drumming department in DT to a completely different level of awesomeness. You should accept the fact that there are tons of people who appreciate the newest DT material and are very grateful that they can still gift them with such divine and masterfully performed compositions.
SC and BC&SL are the albums that I never have the thought of "Hey lets listen to this particular album". It was good during release and became stale within a few months. Its a blessing for the band that MP left.
Fuck about the snare drum sounds... do you think you all understand what DT is playing better than JP...? Mangini is the drummer now. MP left the band. Move on people...!!!
When I first heard this album, I expected more of the same from ADTOE, more showing off technical chops with no regards for atmosphere, mood, or context, no letting a song just sit for a while in silence. And when I finished listening to this song, I cried from happiness. This is one of my favourite songs.
From the first time I heard this, something about the ending of this song reminded me of the ending from Strange Deja Vu. That somewhat reminiscent ending combined with the freshness of the rest of the song makes for another great ballad from Dream Theater!
I really love this album...this song is probably my 2nd or 3rd favorite from the album (after Illumination Theory, and tied with Along For The Ride) ...great melody, great structure. I love that it's just the right amount of heavy for something this emotional...I'm a sucker for beautiful melodies. Complex or not...if the feeling is there, it's there...and for me, it's there on all three post-MP albums. Not everyone is like me though, and I respect that...you wouldn't think so after reading UA-cam comments...but more people thoroughly enjoy their recent work than you may think... ... ...I agree about the snare drum though XD ...but if that's enough to cause me to dislike the music, then I'm worrying about the wrong things :P

Long before the colors start to bleed
I can see the painting come alive
Clever like an angel in disguise
Moving in and out of reach
If the candle lights this crooked path
Like a lighthouse peering through the haze
I will find the river through the rain
And I'll reach the water's edge
Shed your light on me
Be my eyes when I can't see
Shed your light on me
Be my guide so I can see
The bigger picture
Like a moth burned by the fire
And driven to the flame
(Prophecies' a blessing and a curse)
I must bare this cross alone
There's no one else to blame
With each treasure found
Another shipwreck's washed ashore
I am carried by the current
On a slow and steady course
Shed your light on me
Be my eyes when I can't see
Shed your light on me
Be my guide so I can see
The bigger picture
What If caught in a moment
I get lost and can't find my way
What if all along I was wrong
In every turn, In every way
Would you talk me off the ledge
Or let me take the fall
Better to try and fail
Then to never try at all
You look but cannot see
Talk but never speak
You live but cannot breathe
See but don't believe
Wounds that never heal
A heart that cannot feel
A dream that's all too real
A stare as cold as steel
I've listened to the stories of resentment and disdain
I've looked into the empty eyes of anger, fear, and shame
I've taken blood from every stone
And traveled every road
When I see the distant lights illuminate the night
Then I will know I am home

That vocal harmony on the very last word has to be one of the best harmonies I've ever heard. Gives me chills every time.
Maybe, but you probably have not listened carefully (or at all) to Scenes from a Memory. The very best of LaBrie harmonies should be found there)

Yep that's what dreamtheater does for me in general. All there stuff, because there is always something to focus on.

But then I saw many drummers played this song with a thinner sounding snare, and then the song sounded... wrong. Then i realized (two years after first listen) that amongst many things, Mangini's drums is the beauty of this song.
Seriously!!! This is GENIOUS!!!!
I have really missed Dream Theater, This sounds like a return to form. Fingers crossed
salute for Dream Theater, John Petrucci, John Myung, Jordan Rudess, James Labrie, and Mike Mangini (Mike Portnoy, Derek Sherinian , kevin moore, Charlie Dominici, and chris collins)
you all my influences in music
since childhood my father always play the songs Dream Theater, I remember dream theater song that was first entered into my ear that song called "home", and I started looking about Dream Theater, to this day I still enjoy a great melody touch in Dream Theater
This entire album will go down as one of their BEST albums!!!! FANTASTIC!
Even Led Zeppelin had that.
my favorite song on the album
Yes. But they do not play this song in the tour!!!!
vmstars God damned.
Familia Mendez-Rabella BS they play this on their current 25 years tour.
What a beautiful song! Just shows that Dream Theater is one of the best progressive rock bands in the game.
I think this is my fave song from the album! Great vocal melodies. especially the last couple of minutes.

Thanks

Currently my favorite of the album, beautiful!!!
Such a beautiful song
There is not a better intro than in this song! it's amazing! out of this world
One of the best songs in DT list
The epic intro works well with the Dream Signal in the sky.
"Better to try and fail than to never try at all"
This album is spectacular, too bad I went unprepared to yesterday's concert...
Only thing: I kinda miss Portnoy... I mean: Mangini is a great drummer and did some great job in this album. But if I listen to 6:00 (I mean the song from Awake, not the minute in this one) I feel that 'touch' of Portnoy I like more.
I feel you man! Same here.
besides, Mangini looks like a woman.
I fully agree about Pornoy's "touch". Instead, I'm happy not to hear his voice. :)
Efrén Sánchez THANK YOU! he does.
DT is still great and it has been always amazing, but I agree with you: Portnoy was a integral part of DT. He was the best representation of DT spirit
the best song on the DT album!!
lyrics are so catchy and perfect really well made song!!!
DT are better from album to album. Like wine - the older the better.
The best song from the new DT album
NO WORDS TO DESCRIBE, JUST PERFECT!!!!
It really brings me back to 2013 when i was a child goin back to my hometown and my father plays this in my car while my mother and my sister slept in the backseat and we enjoy this song in the night :)
100% heart warming beautiful piece of music. Well done DT!

Why does it only have 100k views? It's incredibly underrated!
Cuz it sucks .... the real DT fan ,we kinda look away since BCaSL .mangini is a great musician ,but he doesn't fit , anyways petrucci and Rudess as usual awesome .
VetoSchwarz Yeah no. Just get out of here.
No I don't ...Mangini is a super musician (nobody can deny that )that's not the point
they should have taken that hiatus ....
SC and BC&SL are the albums that I never have the thought of "Hey lets listen to this particular album". It was good during release and became stale within a few months. Its a blessing for the band that MP left.
amazing vocal line from james and beautiful song!
i have this on vinyl and the crackle and pop of the record player makes it sound awesome
That break at 5:11 ...
Love this song.
Fuck about the snare drum sounds... do you think you all understand what DT is playing better than JP...? Mangini is the drummer now. MP left the band. Move on people...!!!
Wish they could play this live some day. Their songs sound so much better when performed live.
When I first heard this album, I expected more of the same from ADTOE, more showing off technical chops with no regards for atmosphere, mood, or context, no letting a song just sit for a while in silence. And when I finished listening to this song, I cried from happiness. This is one of my favourite songs.
Favourite track on the new album, by far!!
This songs bangs so much that even the hedious snare tone can't spoil it
I just love the section at 2:48
Nothing like some DT to pull you out of depression
After so many years after Images and Words, this is their best album by far!
Lurcher99 woah now slow down
That I love this album as much as I loved Images and Words when I first heard it. What is not clear to you?
At 5:32, one of the most beautiful parts of the album begins.
This album is awesome from beginning to end. It ranks 3rd behind Scenes From A Memory and Awake in my view.
From the first time I heard this, something about the ending of this song reminded me of the ending from Strange Deja Vu. That somewhat reminiscent ending combined with the freshness of the rest of the song makes for another great ballad from Dream Theater!
Just a awesome song, profound lyrics !
I couldn't agree more, I have listened to that part over and over again at extreme volume levels, my neighbors must think I have finally snapped!
Beautiful piece!
This song is my absolute favorite off of the new record. Well done Dream Theater. Well done :D
Ya Allah lagu ini paling enak di album ini, sangat mengena di hati, bikin melayang ke awan2 ..........
This is just a beautiful masterpiece 😍
6:08 ❤❤❤
Trycia Murta yes I agree with you....Praying is a praying...regardless what religions.....
