When you have the best of the best of musicians & vocals all in one band, you get a symphony painting a picture of the imaginary in your mind, a vibe in your heart& a drive in your spirit. . Since 91’ Thats been the essence of Dream Theater! For me.
What I love about this song is that despite not having an actual chorus, it still manages to be incredibly catchy! Makes it great for a single while also having the progressive structure.
This album is criminally underrated. The more I listen to "The Astonishing", the more I get drawn towards it. I love the whole post apocalyptic dystopian vibe on this album (and is primarily based on the same subject matter). People often complain about the duration of the album. In my opinion 2 Hours & 10 Minutes is just a perfect length for a concept which spans across 2 Discs / 4 Vinyl's. There are 9 characters on the album (including the narrator) and to represent them while singing is a MASSIVE UNDERTAKING. I think folks who dislike this album for whatever reasons, must revisit and experience the camaraderie these 5 magnificent musicians harbor. This album is a GEM!
Me too, man. Took me too long to listen to it. (To be fair, it was also because it takes a considerable amount of dedication to do it right, since it's so lengthy... but man, is it worth it.)
@@Celso_Luis: I'm glad you love this record. The album clocks precisely 2 Hours & 10 Minutes in length, therefore there are just too many things to grasp. With a few listens one gets the hang of things and it gets easier on the ears. Every minute of this album is elucidating musically if not lyrically!
@@BreakingAllIllusions You're absolutely right! After a few listens you start to notice more and more details that make it even better. And I'm specially surprised with how Petrucci was able to build such an interesting world and to make us care so much about the characters, even without the help of the additional context to the story (James knocked it out of the park with his performance as well). I can't remember the last MOVIE that made me feel us much for a character as I did for Arhys, for instance.
On this album, Jordan has shown a lot of restraint and is absolutely brilliant with his piano melodies, reminds me of Benny Anderson's parts from ABBA songs. He has done something for the 1st time since disc 2 of 6DOIT - give superb atmospheres that would drawn in the listener. I hope he has left his wankery days behind, because to me, this is Jordan at his best, a concert pianist at heart. We need more of this Jordan, not 2000s wank boy under the control of Portnoy and Petrucci.
This album is awesome. Comes with a Map of the land the Album's music is made. Pictures of every character. It is a Game Of Thrones era, story, castles, etc. Labrie sings verses, that are a character speaking, or narrating. The choruses are responses from another character/s. I love this album, it is awesome. Always loved DT. The whole album is a story told through music.
I wasn't talking about the story's contents you thick fucks. Just that its a concept album in the exact same fucking way The Astonishing is, it has places, characters etc. And the OP was so knowledgeable weren't he? A game of thrones era with castles and a........ story? yeah, that's what makes GoT............. And it's nothing like GoT it's more along the lines of a mix between Bladerunner and Dune. Calling me out where is for the OP? GoT is nothing like the Astonishing whatsoever. But yeah I suppose idk anything do I?
+Fabio La Manna Why should it be? Nobody cares about videos. Everything *must* be perfect when talking about DT? Come on, they are musicians! Rush doesn't care too much about video either.

Also, show me a band that can manage to write such a HUGE musical movie! Love you DT, this is just too awsome after 7 years !
+Camilov Sky You do realize it's part of a story, right? The first song in SFAM opens with "Hello Victoria, so glad to see you my friend" along with many other poorly written lines throughout the album because it is not meant to be taken out of the story's context. If you're looking for some deep meaning in your music you're clearly listening to the wrong band to begin with.
This album is sick. And i'm a diehard fan. All the fans who dislike this album, keep in mind it's a concept album that's made to be an epic. The next album will probably be a normal one again. Exited for more 10+ minute songs.
I don't hate the music on the Astonishing but it's the story that is the part that makes it not of a fulfilling experience I think. It's very hokey, Disney-ish and not fully "world-developed". They should've hired a sci-fi fantasy writer to expand the outline and fill the plot holes that JP wrote. Yes I am aware they are adapting a novel. I mean in the narrative sense of the album.
Why? Really? Someone dislike the album? I think it's a masterpiece. Very musical one. A lot of sad songs on the second part, but still - a lot of musical thought
I suppose most of the budget went towards the massive album rather than the music video. Whatever, it's the music that matters most, and I'm loving the album!
Just keep an open mind when you listen to each album, as they are all very different. You can still hear their signature sound, but they are really good at bringing something new to the table!
I just loved the album! It makes me cry everytime, a masterpiece! Thank you guys, thank you so much for giving us this beautiful album. Bought it and heared it like ten times already.
Just saw you guys live in Milan... After such a show on a side I have a big sense of emptiness, on the other side I have a beautiful memory: a wonderful crowd full of energy, the music, and so many emotions. Cool video. But why are there some CGI inserts that are visibly lower resolution than the rest of the video? At 0:07 and 0:31 I can see the aliasing artifacts caused by image resampling. Some of the other CGI inserts look fine. *EDIT:* Oh my God, folks. It's worse than I had realized! In the CGI scene at 0:35, the two drones on top _are cut off as they move out of bounds!_ I have no idea what software they used to produce these sequences, but this can happen in Adobe After Effects if the drone animations were in a nested composition that had a smaller height than the 1920x1080 background image. The drones' position was animated to move above the bounds. This could also happen if the point where the drones get cut off was supposed to be the top of the final video, but an incompetent motion graphics designer moved the enire nested composition down, exposing the upper bound when the drones got too high. This is an absolutely *massive* blunder by the visual effects team. In addition to the other flaws that go against the basic principles of working with digital images, I'm shocked to see incompetence like this.
+Eincrou There's also something weird happening at 1:26-1:29 in the top right. Seems like an adjustment layer or transparent layer that isn't big enough.
Jedidiah Bensemann It's hard for me to tell exactly what's going on in that scene, but I think there's a decent chance it has something to do with an adjustment layer. The movement of the shadow matches pretty well with the camera motion, so maybe they used a 3D camera animation across the background image, which had an adjustment layer that was too small. The biggest problem with this scene is the small black bar on the top of the screen. And who knows what series of mistakes caused that. These motion graphics are incredibly unprofessional.
Listening to this on a loop will boost your I.Q. 20 points. It's masterful musicianship. DT are the Mozarts and Beethovens of our day. (No. I'm not kidding.)
I've been a fan of DT since 1992 and didn't followed them since Systematic Chaos, and what I have to say of this album is that is just.. AWESOME, the album is so amazing and I love it. Thanks DT!!!
I imagine showing this video to DT back in 1990 and tell them this is you in 26 years.. I wonder how they would react, but I'm sure portnoy will assume he died
Rock guys hate him for his ability and choice to play perfectly on the beats at will, but those great classical composers of the past would have loved him. He's a unicorn in that sense.
+Stefano Ceschi Berrini the design company actually did a great job: the design of the characters and scenarios are very well projected. The issue here is the render quality and overuse of the same render images, while using some features in After Effects to make it look like they have motion: the solution for this, is having the money/will to pay the full price for the render quality! If this is a budget problem, or a DT taste and the band felt no need to pay for more render quality, will never know but I tell you this: this is not the Design Company to blame!
+Luke Morales I partly agree. I need to better explain what I meant :) : There's no doubt the characters and scenarios are good. They're good as static images. Here, the real big problem regards - apart from the render quality - the motion and effects: it's something absolutely not professional. Look also at the trailer, someone with some grasps of AE would've done a much better job.
Yeah, I do agree the motion and effects are not in a professional quality, but again: this is budget related! You can't have a professional quality motion if You're not willing to pay for it! Unfortunately, DT never seems to invest a good amount of money in visual effects... as someone commented somewhere this video: "Default DT video: musicians playing and bad CGI"
+Luke Morales absolutely, yeah! Btw, if it was just for those kind of videos, ok, who cares, whatever! Problem here could be related to the footage they're gonna prepare for the tour. I just *hope* it won't be the same mediocre stuff. It'd be a pity, also 'coz the music on this album is IMHO absolutely epic!
Im a jazz guy never listened to these guys and this literally sounds worse than a pokemon esque soundtrack, guess to each their own but this seems like 12 year old music.
Well if people would buy their work and not download it illegally from the internet their production would be better. So the only people having the right to complain in my opinion are those who really bought their stuff. Everybody else should just stop criticizing.
+Tony Shing Siu Sze It seems that people only make comments if they want to be negative or totally positive. Those in the former category can't find anything wrong with the 'music', because it's f#%king amazing, so they make comments about the video instead.
i really like dream theater. i wouldn't call them to my favorite bands, but noone can deny that these guys know what i means to make music. every single one of them is a master at what he does, and their songwriting is just amazing. this is what it means to be a musician!

He's a unicorn in that sense.
I love mancini's style. Hearsay incoming, I prefer Mancini over Portnoy.
@@ficklefingeroffate - Without question. I never cared for Portnoy.
I like this CD, I dont care what anybody says. The more I listen to it the more I like it. Now to burn the new one to CD and start listening to it.
Burn?
@@macabeo if you don't know why you never will.

The best Dream Theatre video ever.
My favourite album of Dream Theater
3:39 Damn!!! Just love those syncopated ideas ...also, i love watching MM play drums, makes me want to be a drummer when I am actually a guitarist ...
Some people I knew played Dream Theater songs at a music festival
man am I glad I was introduced to these guys
Best band of the universe
PLEASE, tell me this "graphic design" company won't make the supporting videos for the tour. C'mon DT, this is everything but professional.
Stefano Ceschi Berrini sorry to disappoint you but, probably what we saw in the teaser is already the tour footage =/
such a masterpiece. seriously this is art and music at its finest its sad people would rather to justin bieber than true art like this
this is closer to bieber than to real dream theater
Im a jazz guy never listened to these guys and this literally sounds worse than a pokemon esque soundtrack, guess to each their own but this seems like 12 year old music.
no, it's not that bad. many dt fans are disappointed with this album, but this is solid music. though this song is very pop
umm you should listen to queen thats pure talent
Tyler Lopez I agree with you man!! These guys are talented just as much as Queen! Forget the naysayers dude!😉
This song is a gift to the DT fans
Thank god for music, jon myung's only way to communicate with the rest of the world
James looks really cool in this.
agreed
Yeah like Boy George cool right?
Dream Theater as always great works.
Well if people would buy their work and not download it illegally from the internet their production would be better. So the only people having the right to complain in my opinion are those who really bought their stuff.
Everybody else should just stop criticizing.
These guys are so freakin tight! Their virtuosity soothes the savage soul.
the solo is magic...
I never listen better music than Dream Theater.
Let's be proud we live in the same age as Dream Theater, they will be seated next to Mozart & Beethoven as time passes by
Hahaha, no they won’t.
I finally found it, the dumbest comment on the internets.
More likely Nicki Minaj will become president
I hear many hated Beethoven in his time. He was the Heavy Metal of that era then.
Hah, no. And even this is just a pale shell of greatness they used to have a LONG time ago. This will not stand the test of time.
You see how everyone cares about the music video but not the music?
Lol yes
+Tony Shing Siu Sze In fairness, we all know the song by this point. The video is the new thing to talk about here.
+Tony Shing Siu Sze Exactly! I thought this was AWESOME!
+Tony Shing Siu Sze It seems that people only make comments if they want to be negative or totally positive. Those in the former category can't find anything wrong with the 'music', because it's f#%king amazing, so they make comments about the video instead.
Yup, it's fuckin stupid lol
i really like dream theater. i wouldn't call them to my favorite bands, but noone can deny that these guys know what i means to make music. every single one of them is a master at what he does, and their songwriting is just amazing. this is what it means to be a musician!
Fantastic clip and Genius musician work!
At 3:28 Mike looks like he's really having a good time xD
Dream Trigger
Andrés Valdebenito The mechanized Mangini's drums too much they might as well just arrange the drums with a Drum VST.
reevaluate that trigger and see just how it all pans out. self analysis is my new key. I'm a Christian but i gotta love myself too as to love one another....
James LaBrie is amazing
Just saw these guys live in Seattle. Totally awesome, keep rocking Dream Theater!
Fantastic! Really Looking forward To your gig in Brussels :-)
