      That rear wing is a deal-breaker. I don’t care how nice it drives if I look like a clown getting out of a bad joke of a car. Women are not going to have sex with me if I show up in a clown-mobile (translate this into Japanese, please).

    It's nice to see that Honda is going back to building fun cars again instead of automotive appliances. Now, they just need to go back to their subtle styling roots.
    Before I made it to the end of the video I was thinking to myself I wish they offered a "touring package" like Porsche does with the GT3. It's a really interesting car that bridges the gap between the Golf R and the Focus RS.

    What I love about this review is that it's about DRIVING the car and not a shallow look at it. When I test drove it this week (and I think the sales guy was going to throw up as I went into corners hard to see what happened...he kind of wobbled out after...) I immediately knew I had to have it - and did get it, a 2018. Absolutely everything this reviewer said about it's handling resonated with me. The look might be out of some 80/90s Macross anime, but it's just the best FWD I've ever driven. Just an awesome, awesome car. Thanks for a really comprehensive and USEFUL review.

    The CTR is the best all around DD ever built. It's the king of affordable speed. In 2020 the next level up is about 70k and these are still 40. It's dominant over the competition, an STI feels like a tank in comparison.
    There is a reason the things lose almost nothing in resale. It is the DD perfected.

    • @gravityhammer25
      @gravityhammer25 4 роки тому +3

      Agreed, I bought my 2019 Type R in September, I had a 2017 WRX STI... had to sell the STI... but not sad at all. The Type R just has superior driving dynamics. It really feels like a FWD Porsche GT3, every gear pulls hard. My STI was practically dead in 4th gear. I may go back to Subaru if they make the FA24 STI but until then it's all Type R.

      @sly9263 3 роки тому +1

      @@typerfk8 I like the spirit of the type R and I like Honda. I like what they are trying to do here and, functionally, I believe they achieved that. Setting aside that a compact isn't something I'm willing to tolerate at 6'2, I would have considered this car if the exterior design wasn't so overdone. That's not subjective either- the type R has far more styling than pretty much any other production vehicle out there (and certainly within its class). As a result it looks very immature, like something a teenager would drive. That's not to say that I wouldn't drive it because I'm worried about looking like a teenager; I'm saying it looks decorated by someone with (arguably) poor taste that didn't know when to quit, which is very common with kids and their cars. So when people say they don't want to drive it/call it a kid's car, that's my interpretation of it. If Honda reeled in the exterior a bit it would be more on par with the WRX or the like but still have its own unique look- I think it would then appeal to a larger audience. At the end of the day though, all that matters is whether or not you like it.

    I really like your techical part of the review. Nobody lifts a car a show you how something works. As you know, these cars are driven on tracks a lot and some tracks are having high speed corners, where you need that rear end stability which wing brings. There is a lot of scientific test which explain how much wing is worth on fwd car too. Just take a look at time attach competition and it will be clear. This car without a wing would be ugly. Its not stylish car, but I love how its bold and in your face design. That’s type r. Its not aston martin, nobody drives R in a suit.

      Frequent Fligher me too, its too much right now, but too clean (golf R clean) is boring too. One of the best driving features of fk8 is good stability on high speed braking. I have fn2 type R with supercharger and 370bhp, when I start braking from 200kmh and whant to prepare car for slow coorner 70-ish kmh) its drama! Fk8 is doing that easy.

    I only ever saw one white Civic Type R ever since they started selling them in Spring of 2017. The crazy look is an acquired taste, but the current gen Civic drives so well & full of technology I don't mind. (On a side note I DO live in Canada...and I saw that white Civic in Scarborough where I work...could it be this is the same car I saw?)
    Honestly given how good it drives, the only real reason the jokes & hate is really because it is a Civic with a big wing. We've all been there, making fun of ricers since the first days of Fast & Furious (the sack of rice says it all), but if you can look past that the Civic Type R is a genuine masterpiece & a definitely future classic.

    • @Trades46
      @Trades46 7 років тому +4

      Name me a current FWD sports car that drives as well as this. Answer is you can't. The Renault Megane RS 275 Cup came close, but the Type R handily beats it as the Nurburgring time shows. I think that qualifies it to be a masterpiece.

    • @ColinMcray
      @ColinMcray 7 років тому +1

      Trades46 So just because the civic has the record in one track, somewhere in europe, where any company can go with modified car and set whatever time they want, without anyone checking if their car is actually stock means it's a masterpiece to you? And no i can't name you another current fwd car that drives as well, because every other manufacter went AWD. But i can name you so many other older fwd cars that i think are better to drive than this civic (most of them would be older hondas). So in conclusion, my opinion is that faster doesn't mean better.

    • @Trades46
      @Trades46 7 років тому +5

      The key is "modern" (might want to practice reading). The Nurburgring time isn't the point; but the fact it can while remaining FWD (e.g. like all historic Civic Type R) and still punch AWD hot hatches in the face is of itself an engineering feat.
      Also while older Hondas could drive better, none of them ever had to deal with this much HP & TQ going to front wheels. So this is the most power-dense FWD & has handling to match. If you can't appreciate even that, you're just a hater.

    I feel like the people who are hating on this car having never driven a type r. People are so critical on its "ricer looks" and the fact that its only fwd. Type r's are amazingly well balanced, have great handling, and make good power for its purpose. Probably in the age bracket you would expect, but his age doesn't discredit his opinion; there is no right or wrong opinion to have about this or any car. Looks are subjective, and even if this car isn't a lot of people's cup of tea there isn't anything wrong with liking the looks either. This car looks like exactly what it is, and is not pretending to be anything its not. Also if the aero is functional what's the problem; GT3 cars look like this, and the CTR was designed to perform best on tracks GT3 cars race, so of course its going to look like them. Yes it is FWD, and yes it has less power than those cars, but it would take a total meathead to think that good aero doesn't help regardless of the platform.

      ... i didn't reply to Steve's comment, because i didn't think there would be a positive reply to any answer i could give. the age bracket you'd expect is what age though? i'm 46. i'm not a fan of the looks of these newer generation Civics. i think the hatchback is better looking over, the sedan, and the coupe(which looks like it should be a hatchback). i think the wing on the Type R makes it stand out from all the other Civic hatchbacks that i've been seeing on the road. have yet to see a Type R on the road though.

    Good video. I avoided it like the plague because I'm not going to sit here and watch a UA-cam video that is over 30min long.
    Now that I seen it, 2 years later almost, I must say... you did a great job.
    To help answer your questions on the flaws...
    1) The large wheels are what was required to make the numbers they made with the car at the nurburgring, therefore the car had to come with them. The science behind it, is that larger wheels with smaller sidewall tires, gives you more responsiveness and firmer handling on the turns and switchbacks. Too soft of sidewalls/rubber and the body will just want to rock and plow like a large boat would. They needed it to respond instantly, so that's what they used, so that's what we got. Go down to 18" or 17" wheels and you'll get a whole lot less loss of power that those large and heavy wheels were taking from the car. I would say 15hp easy, even if the wheels weigh the same but are smaller diameter.
    2)The reason the car seems to be so strong for such weight and power, is because clearly it is underrated on hp. It puts down 290whp (rated 306hp), whereas the Civic Si puts down 180whp (rated 205hp). That would be a 5% loss in power going from the motor to the wheels, vs 12% loss. Typically, a FWD car will lose 12%. Doing the math backward on the Type-R, for 12% loss, it should be rated 330hp.
    3) The gear grind feature/flaw, is Honda's answer to their dying dealerships not having enough service customers... Honda believes that if they throw in a faulty part to ruin the transmissions, the dealerships should have plenty of work. The real problem is that the dealerships want to provide the worst service of all the manufacturer dealer service depts, and expect the customers to come back. Ridiculous. What is that faulty part you ask? It's the clutch master cylinder causing the transmissions to fail, first with a grind, then permanent damage until your gears are ground to a pulp. So, what is the fix you ask? Go to the Honda Parts dept and ask for a 2001 Civic (7th gen) 4-door manual transmission clutch master cylinder and put it any Acura/Honda from 2002 forward. Yes, any Acura/Honda with a manual transmission for all those 17 years, be it a truck, an SUV, a minivan, a car, whatever. The most commonly complained about cars: RSX, Civic Si, and now Type-R, all the same fix for all those sporty/sport cars.
    4)I will never buy one or any NEW Honda ever again, Honda dealerships are greedy, and Honda is not much different (see above), they don't care.

I have to empty out my kaki cargo pockets everyday, and do a little shimmy. Honda has actually already issued warnings to the dealerships marking the Type R up so much. I have seen one Type R that had a markup of $15k at a dealership in California. Honda actually said that either dealerships sell the car at MSRP with normal dealership markups ($1-2k), or they will not deliver any more Type R's to those dealerships. That being said, dealerships still make such a good profit even at MSRP, which is $33,900. So negotiating on this car would be wise. Getting a brand new Type R for $3-4k below MSRP is a hell of a good deal. Especially considering the pricing of the competition like the Focus RS and the WRX STi.

    This car represents the same paradoxical situation the Integra Type R did nearly two decades ago. I can't say I love the styling, but after driving one the styling grew on me simply because of how much of a joy the car was to drive. I liked everything about the car except the fact that no dealer was willing to go below a $4,500 markup over MSRP. Styling is subjective where as performance and MSRP are objective. Honda designed a spectacularly performing car with a very reasonable MSRP and a fun factor high enough to bring non-Honda owners like myself into their brand. And yet, their limiting of production may prevent this car from ever being as good as it could be because the ridiculous dealer markup turns what should be a car of tremendous value into an economical shafting.

    Another masterful review, thank you. As a 63 year old man who went from a 67 Pontiac 283 to a 71 Charger Super Bee when I first started driving, I have to admit my tastes are somewhat eclectic. Heck, I own an 11 year old FJ Cruiser that I still love to drive every day. This must explain why I don't understand all the hate directed for this car. Name one super hatch (it's more than a hot hatch) designed for the younger generations, reasonably affordable that doesn't look like an economy car with makeup. I admire Honda's effort and hope they clear the transmission issues very quickly. After buying my initial production run FJ Cruiser I can say that I too had drivetrain problems from a design that was in production for years in the Tacoma and 4Runner. These problems can pop up from any manufacturer at any time in these days of global production of auto parts. A sign of the times we live in I guess. Love the Type R, congrats to Honda.

      @reactorfallout 6 років тому

      yeah, well, keep doing what you are doing. there are enough genuine enthusiasts out there to fill your Subs and get your views without resorting to less tasteful or more provacotive presentations. How one makes themselves visiable in this space is going to be challenging. I've been obsessively watching car videos on the internet for 15 years and I just discovered your videos 3 days ago. It's a fricken jungle in the UA-cam space...
      Logistically speaking, reviewing two cars at once is obviuosly much more work, but if you look at all of the most popular car videos, even going way back into Top Gear's catalog, it's the rivalries, shootouts, and side-by-side comparisons that dominate the view count. It's drama, and people love drama, especially car guys. Now, I have no clue if that is the direction you're interested in, I'm just spitballing.
      One thing I would say is maybe trim the videos up a little more. I would hate for you to cut short anything meaningful that you want to say about the cars, but if attention span is where I think it these days with the 18-49 demo, 30 minute videos might be too much, both for veiwers and yourself. I'm only saying this based on the average length of the largest, most respected car shows on you tube, which is right around the 22-23 minute mark.
      oh yeah, more drone work. overhead shots following cars through forests and backroads is, well for lack of a better word, majestic.
      anyways, thanks for the impressive videos, and I hope you figure out how to get all the monies! the hard work is acknowledged and appreciated.

      What car/s are you looking at? I own a lower 1.5T Civic hatch and I had gears grind about a handful of times but that was all when it was new and it hasn't happened again. I think it could have to do with revving to the absolute limit and then not waiting for the revs to match in some way. Now, I rev to 6k and this is plenty high for me no matter. I wonder if the Honda gear oil is the best but that's still what is in there now. I think people may tend to over-test their vehicles when they are newer, because you want to get your money's worth and to explore the limits of your vehicle.

      I see these things everywhere in California.

      Well the dealerships where I live either didn't have em in stock or had em marked WAY up. Like $4,000+ above. Ended up with a WRX, I'm actually happy it turned out that way because I love the WRX handling and AWD in the winter. I don't see very many Civic Type Rs driving around either.

    I've already commented on this, but I just picked up on the dude who bought it within seconds. I was the same. I saw it online and was in the showroom, not kidding, in 10 minutes. It's insanely good and I love how it looks. Ooo, subscribed. I've watched half a dozen of your videos and all have been great.

    The type r is so in your face ricey that you can't help but like it! Seems like a good deal for the level of performance, but people paying 10-20k over msrp is crazy!

      One of the local fuckboi dealers near where I live (David McDavid Honda) wanted $20k over ($55k out the door) and didn't even have an allocation on their books at the time -_-

      kabob21 The stealerships are definitely taking advantage while they can. Even paying msrp for a new car is too much, just wait a while and get a much better deal.

      I would wait for new gen sti and check out refreshed type r few year later.... no one would buy this type r at stupid high price.

      esaino The only problem with that is the new sti doesn't come out until 2019 as a 2020 model. Currently the wrx is the better value over the sti, it's a better daily and with a few mods it's a very good car.

    Great review, learned a lot about this car. For me, there are way too many electronic systems. I hate variable steering between different modes, the steering should be the same in every mode, the ability for the electronics to actually turn the wheel for you? No thanks. Too many systems to correct all the problems of fwd. I honestly don’t really think these will age well. Not to mention the rear of this car is hideous.

    Savagegeese-were you driving this Type R 2 weekends ago on some side roads right off of route 47 near Woodstock? I passed you guys twice in a grey 17' Miata RF and actually took delivery of my grey Type R this past Friday. I saw all the camera gear in the windshield when you passed me and thought it might have been you?

      Hutzman76 yeah, I actually commented before I watched the video but it was definitely him because I recognize all the roads he was on

      +jameswillard1 Yes I saw you! Pass by, you use the same roads?

      savagegeese sure do! I just did suspension, wheels/tires, exhaust, header, and tune on the RF and was testing it out ...its still pretty slow but handles way better than the sloppy 70's Cadillac factory suspension it came with and it's pretty fun. I will prob take the Type R out there one of these days but I am feeling a little sick to my stomach after watching your video.....I thought it was my imagination but I too have experienced a gear grind or two already in the Type R and wondered WTF was going on as I've never experienced that in any other car 😬🤦‍♂️

    Is nobody gonna mention the mismatched front side markers? Maybe his replacement clear one fell out on the drivers side. Happened to me in my BRZ after throwing it around at autocross.

      Nesh. Fell out on the way down from Canada in a rain storm, luckily I had the oem ones in the trunk still..
