Jason I like the clever solution the eng did to supress the torque steer but what happen if you tune the car as we all know honda enthusiast will eventually, will that get to far to upset the eng solution? what is your opinion on this. Thanks
I prefer Type-Rs to have a high revving NA motor, but I also know Honda doesn't slap the Type-R name on a car that doesn't deserve it. I'm excited to see this car out on the streets!
As someone who dislikes turbo noise and delay, I couldn't agree more. Thus, this is another reason the S2000 still stands out against all these turbo charged 4 cyl that are now produced to give the same driving appeal. It's zippy without the extra whine.
SpiritedxDriver most cars that have a performance version are almost like the same vehicle as the base vehicle. This one is completely different from the base civic and even the si, so I completely agree that they didn't just throw type r badge on this car they actually thought of it. To be honest when Honda came out saying they were doing this car I didn't think it could even level with the focus RS and seeing this video as one of the first actual driving video and not prototype type r I think it can top the focus RS.

Just wanna tell, I watched this after the RL, AG, and CT channel review. I didn't expect it before, this review and its technical explanation... STUNNING. Very great job.
Thanks for mentioning rev-hang. It's a huge problem with so many modern cars. It ruins otherwise great cars. That would be a great topic for a video since not enough people know about it or understand it.
Loping Camshaft Unfortunately, fully complying with latest emissions regulations with absolutely zero rev hang is simply unrealistic once you understand that the reason the smooth out the throttle closing is to prevent the sudden lack of intake airflow causing a transient dip in AFR, which creates a lot of unburnt hydrocarbons.
You're right that is the cause, but I don't think it's the only way to solve the emissions issue. It comes across more as manufacturers either being lazy or cheap to use other solutions. It's mostly in lower to medium-end sporty cars (say, below $40k).
You're a reviewer who knows what the manufacturer is trying to achieve, rather than another reviewer who always likes to give a different opinion just to gain views. You know what really happens in a car and backs up your ideas with facts and your knowledge. Even for the Lexus LC video, which I don't entirely agree with, I still perfectly respect your opinion because there's a rationale behind it. Keep it up man, that's good stuff there.
Superb review. I agree with many of the comments. IMO this is the best online review of this car. Just so practical and informative. A great review just makes you wanna drive the car! Now I just gotta get me one of these and drive it.
I love whenever i look up a certain topic or a certain car and see a video from engineering explained about it, this guy is a literal genius that makes great content and is able to talk about any subject in a way that even a novice can understand, great guy, great content, let's keep it going!!!
well deserved - love the channel. Btw EE we have the 9th generation ctr in Europe and it's more or less the same car with a bit different rear suspension setup and no blipping module - a bit more harsh than this one but still very similar in terms of the tech - they used this platform as their testing grounds for the release of this one for the us market and it surpassed the expactations - that is why you've just driven the x ctr for the us market - if their expirement failed on the 9th gen hatch you'd not be having that at all :) so gg Honda :) the us getting it is also great news for the eu market - because we will be getting lots of mods and tuning stuff for this car and it is finally exactly the same car on both continents.
This is like the best car review I've ever seen! I have watched a lot of your whiteboard vids but man you really have a talent with in car reviews, you definitely speak my language bro!
thank you for giving your personal opinion on your past STi. HyperBlue STi owner here. I was wondering about someone's opinion about the new Type R from a past (out current) STi owner.
Good review. A million times better than some of the so-called "car reviewers" on youtube whose reviews consist only of the amount of HP, torque and top-speed and the rest of the review is them talking about unrelated stuff.
Agree about the hatch.....the STI is no longer in play for me, since it is sedan-only.....pity ! Every single competitor, whether it be the Type-R, the Focus RS, the Veloster N, the Golf R are all hatches and Subaru, as I understand, is working on the next STI sedan.......ouch
Hello Jason, just ordered a Type R, in blue. Cannot wait to drive it, had a test drive and the handling/performance was incredible. Thank you for a comprehensive review.
Jason, an amazing job done!!! U are the only reviewer who purely speaks based on true facts and not emotions. I truly applaud u for that. U are not just a true car guy but also a true engineer! I'm an engineering student btw.
Wow! Great review, Jason! This was a really well layed out review! I actually really enjoy the boldy aggressive styling of the Civic TypeR! Also, that Champion White color lools stellar. Mkhitar Aboolian What is the advantage to having those? I really dont get it at all. I see no possible upsides to electrifying what is an incredibly simple mechanical system
Usually because it saves space and weight. It's also a bit safer because it doesn't bypass the anti-lock system. In this case it's because the base design of the Civic 10th gen has an electronic break, and the Type-R is based on it, doing a redesign to make the car arguably worse doesn't make sense. I find it interesting that since the addition of hill-assist, in areas where manual transmissions are more popular (e.g. outside the US), ebrakes are more popular. So clearly this is one feature that is more a function of us just not being used to it yet rather than being unnecessary luxury add-on that will fall by the wayside.
What a great review. Seeing you smile when driving, it seemed to me that you thoroughly enjoyed riding the the new Civic Type-R. Thanks a bunch for a great and informative review!
good english spot on (accurate usage makes it easy to understand) really good car enthusiast, you know what you talk about and speak from rich perspective.. very nice.. i like it..
"But I think I'm a little too narrow overall" 😂 Great review, man! You hit all the essential points and didn't paint over anything with rose colored glasses like some reviewers have.
Hrithik Jayanth basically water (instead of H²O it's HO²) and it keeps your blinkers from fogging up and causing an accident. if a cop catches you without it, it's a $2000 fix it ticket. better run to AutoZone, because if you don't know about it you may be low.
Awesome review! Thanks for sharing so much technical tidbits about the CTR, especially against its' competitors. I guess there's around 127 STI owners who watched this video and decided to thumbs down at the 15 minute mark lol On another note... I'm sick of hearing haters using "rice" and "wrong wheel drive" on this car. Everything on this car is functional. If you don't know what rice means, stop using it. And secondly, every reviewer has given positive reviews on this car. Just like Jason here, a lot of people are surprised how well this FWD car handles. If you've never driven an R, drive one. It just might change your mind about these FWD Honda's. Can't wait to add this to my R collection!
Awesome review! I test drove a 2018 model in April and haven’t stopped thinking about it. Great technical assessment, the review highlighted looks but was really focused on performance and structure that supports it. BEST part was definitely getting to properly listen to it at the end! Top video all round!
Wow! Seems like a ton of fun to drive! Why can't Honda do this on the F1 track? Anyway, I will keep this car on my radar for when I'm ready to replace my 3 series.
Your reviews are absolutely the best. i really appreciate that you take the time to explain the technical information like the suspension setup that eliminates understeer and the aerodynamics. Keep it up!
Optimus PrimeG1 There's no need for VTEC on the intake side because the turbo is already taking care of that function. it's like trying to wear a bullet proof vest over a bullet proof vest-- completely unnecessary.
I love my 2011 Subaru WRX hatch, I have my gripes about it too, but damn! He didn't stop smiling this entire video! You know that car's got to be good!
Does the K20C1 in this type R have any mechanical similarities to the exisitng K20A and K24 engines? Would be it possible to swap a K20C1 head+turbo on a K24 block?
Thanks for all of your reviews. As an enthusiast, I haven't kept a car for more than 3 years and your videos help cover the pros and cons before I even consider a video. Partially bought an STi after watching your review and now considering the Type R as I get rid of my video. I've also had an S2000 with 4.77's and THAT was an amazing ride. :). Thanks for your videos!
Here is something he said in another comment :" If it's going to remain on pavement, the Type R is more fun. STI engine is too dated and doesn't pull like the R. 0-60 times won't tell the full story because AWD will shine there, but for daily use (and those who don't drop clutches regularly) the R is far more refined and drivable. If you want fun in the snow, I've never owned a car that gripped like my '14 STI. 3 LSD's makes it magical in low grip scenarios haha. Of course, as I always mention, you're limited by your tires. 62% weight up front and a helical diff will mean the Type R should be fine in the snow, especially with the right tires. I've driven my S2000 in the snow with all seasons and it did alright, LSD helps a lot."
It seems like you're quite high on this car. Would you say other reviewers were as enthusiastic? I guess what I mean is, were you all generally surprised and delighted?
Of the many journalists I talked to, most were quite impressed, yes. Individual things we weren't crazy about, but overall it seemed to be very well received.

I reckon You are one of the best reviewer I have seen! You are a real transparent guy! I can see you have done some work with yourself or you are just gifted! Most of reviewers these days are run by their ego... Well done! And keep it real!
Two things. One, you keep mentioning how much lighter it is then cars with AWD, that's not exactly fair considering the AWD systems probably weigh as much as the difference in weight. Second, love the rear wiper!!!
I knew I wasn't the only person thinking this. I would say adding in a transfer case, driveshaft, rear differential, and rear axles adds a lot more than 200-300 lbs.
What's your point? He's saying it's lighter because it's FWD precisely because it doesn't have extra rear-drive components weighing it down. Makes for less drivetrain losses and a better handling car on high-speed corners.
After watching your review, I actually want to buy a Honda Civic Type R... I've been looking for a new daily driver to give my Jeep SRT8 a break. I was leaning towards the Golf R but I think your review has changed my mind. Thanks for this review, and great job!
I didn't really care for this car before all these reviews but now I would really be interested in driving one and possibly looking forward to owning one down the line. Great review EE!
Squidward's House Wanna know how Ken Block do drift on Focus RS? He use the race mode. see the vid. He says that the drift its just doing for you which its not the same thing, and i guess he know a bit about that. just wondering.
Hey, your scripting here is great. At points throughout, there were times I had a question or inquiry in my head, seconds later, you had answered it. Very good. CR-x was my first car, would love if they returned that to the market, or type-r'd the CR-Z and truly did it justice.
Well if the FF layout was so important to the cars "heritage" then why didn't they put in a high revving Vtec engine.... That argument isn't good enough.
MannyFresh1x I think the real reason is for the low emissions required in Europe. An NA engine with that much hp and capacity wouldn't pass. So turbocharging is the way of the future unfortunately.
As someone who is going to be shopping for a car within the next year this really makes me want to get a Type R. Always ahd my heart set on an STI but from everything ive seen so far this car is worth it.
So why not go out and drive an STI. It really might be all you're looking for. No dealer markup, that lovely EJ rumble, and everyday practicality. The type R is proven to net a couple extra seconds off your time around a racetrack (pending driver) but the STI is a still more than capable performance car. With an already proven aftermarket, already knowing all of the pitfalls and weaknesses of the EJ motor, it's not a terrible investment. The Type R might prove to be one of the greatest cars of this generation but it's tuning potential right now is relatively unknown. There is also an ongoing transmission problem that many owners are reporting which for a brand new vehicle that most owners haven't yet modified and with very low mileage, that's scary. Hopefully Honda takes care of the problem as is like to see the car succeed. But if you're heart is with a subie, no need to change it. I always wanted an STI, traded my wrx in a couple months ago and don't regret a thing.
Just remember no matter what car you buy, something will always come along after that will eventually beat it out by a few tenths or more. And if you're modifying at all than you're only limited by your budget.
"Race Inspired Cosmetic Enhancements" or "Radically Immature Car Enthusiasts"? This Type-R is legit. Honda's Type-R program has always been legit, and their performance engineers know their stuff. Form follows function on this new Civic Type-R and it has legitimate, performance-engineering-based reasons for its design.
Race Inspired Cosmetic Enhancements. And I know the Type R is a good performer, but there are cavemen that will call it a ricer because it's a Honda. As long as I can remember everyone called a Honda a ricer. The Type R seems to be stuck with that just as the Mustang is stuck with the Cars and Coffee curse. Personally, I don't like the way the car is designed but the performance more than makes up for it.
Great review - even in my much more tame Civic Coupe Touring, I still have a blast with this car, and yes, even with the CVT. I think this generation of Civics have been without a doubt one of Honda's greatest releases, especially after the 9th generation Civics. I would love a Type R, but I just bought this car, and I've never driven stick either (but want to learn), and that's okay. My Civic is still very enjoyable and I wouldn't have chosen anything else for what I paid. Great job by Honda!
As a guy who personally swears by Subaru and loves the STi, I have to say that the Type R is impressive. I am excited to see some competition between them in the future.
lone mazter all Honda hot hatch, integra, and other type R in their time is decent. You're probably an American hater who never got to experience their previous hot hatches so u talk out of your ass!
I'm very suprised by that price point. my brother lives outside of Atlanta and there wasn't a single RS under 40k. (obviously not the only thing I took from the video)
Joe Rogan I'm with ya.. I'm 50 and I love hatchbacks and lookin to get into another one, but the looks are over the top. Honda should offer a wing delete, and get it in black which would "calm" the looks down a bit. I have a feeling if I test drive it I'll get it.
I love that people hate on the looks its like the wrx back in the day when it first got here everyone thought the styling was so over tge top now its one of the most loved designs in car enthusiasts culture🤷♂️
Skinny dude car seat problem checking in haha. I know the feeling. I drove an RSX for 10 years and got her up to 180k miles and it was problem free, gotta love hondas. I moved to France and wanted something not available in the US, Civic Type Rs are pretty hard to find in Europe and quite expensive, went with a suzuki swift sport instead and love it, power is only 140hp but it weighs right around 1050kp or so, very light and nimble. They use em on the Nurburgring as rental cars for track days. Awesome review, so lucky to already be driving one.
Wooo... clean 8th gen si's go for 7-8k USD and they came out 10 years ago. And that's for a SI!!! If these prove to be reliable, they will go for 15k at least (probably more) in 10 years.
From a V8 Guy/Mustang 5.0, this is it, this what makes cars fun. He's said 295 Ft-Lbs Tq at 2500, that's FUN and Awesome!!. With Honda Reliability !!! Honda: Making Economy Cars Great Again.
Hello Jason. Thanks for all the great videos you had put on youtube. I was thinking of buying a Type R but hesitated to get one because of the rims and tires issues I read from various articles. I am not sure if the information I read is accurate but I will summarize it here. A Type R owner ran over a pot hole and damaged the rim causing a flat tire that can not be fixed by the "Fix-a-Flat" device that came with the car. Another owner ran over a big nail and the damage was too severe to be fixed by the "Fix-a-Flat" device. The Type R doesn't come with a spare tire so both owners were stranded for hours waiting for the flatbed tow truck. But this was just the beginning. Many repair shops and Honda dealers don't have the Honda recommended machine to handle this 20" tire and the light weight aluminum rim can easily be damaged is not handled properly. Since 20" tires aren't common, some shops don't even have them in stock so it would take days to order one. It seems like a full size spare tire is necessary if the Type R is to be used a daily driving and road trips. But since the Type R doesn't come with a spare tire, it probably doesn't have the tools and instruction on how to replace a spare tire on your own. Could you put together a video on the Type R RIM and Tires and options to overcome the issues mentioned above. Thanks in advance.
You're a great car reviewer, very neutral and driven by pure car enthusiasm. You get it.
Thanks for the kind words! Definitely enjoyed my seat time and reviewing this one.

"But I think I'm a little too narrow overall" 😂 Great review, man! You hit all the essential points and didn't paint over anything with rose colored glasses like some reviewers have.
okay it's pretty impressive, but how many psi of blinker fluid does it hold?
NastyMcBurgers 4
what is blinker fluid?
Hrithik Jayanth basically water (instead of H²O it's HO²) and it keeps your blinkers from fogging up and causing an accident. if a cop catches you without it, it's a $2000 fix it ticket. better run to AutoZone, because if you don't know about it you may be low.
Hrithik Jayanth bro it's the stuff between the hydro core and the downforce piping system
Ben Fillman $3k lucky here in cali its a $5k fix it ticket. im constantly going for blinker fluid just in case. Autozone always hooks it up
This guy is so good! His enthusiasm for cars is evident in every vid he makes. Never miss an EE video!
A true blessing from the R&D gods of Japan.Unlike the BS from Honda USA from last year. 😋
Awesome review! Thanks for sharing so much technical tidbits about the CTR, especially against its' competitors. I guess there's around 127 STI owners who watched this video and decided to thumbs down at the 15 minute mark lol
On another note...
Impressive.
Would still take the Focus RS tough!
You know it's a great car when the driver enjoys driving it.. We can see you smiling in this review all the time
Let's take a moment of silence for VTEC, may your soul rest in peace.
Neo Kgatla it has VTEC
It's not the same.
Neo Kgatla VTEC and boost don't work together that well, that's why they did it. It's still a form of vtec tho, so I'm happy
Your reviews are absolutely the best. i really appreciate that you take the time to explain the technical information like the suspension setup that eliminates understeer and the aerodynamics. Keep it up!
The power of dreams 👌
M 310 imagine VTEC on intake cams with turbo
thats what i would call Power of dreams...
Optimus PrimeG1 There's no need for VTEC on the intake side because the turbo is already taking care of that function. it's like trying to wear a bullet proof vest over a bullet proof vest-- completely unnecessary.
Worth
I love my 2011 Subaru WRX hatch, I have my gripes about it too, but damn! He didn't stop smiling this entire video! You know that car's got to be good!
Does the K20C1 in this type R have any mechanical similarities to the exisitng K20A and K24 engines? Would be it possible to swap a K20C1 head+turbo on a K24 block?
Shaiyan Hossain great question
Shaiyan Hossain only one way to find out
No
Thanks for all of your reviews.
Do you personally recommend this car? I might just get this
Jason likes Hondas I think that can be seen in this video too. Quite sure he recommends this,I would too!
I've driven my S2000 in the snow with all seasons and it did alright, LSD helps a lot."
get it! be an explorer, you could pave the way for big power mods (or mildly higher ones)
Mark O its fwd with 300hp. it will try to kill u in snow...
matt terrain it will smoke you in dry
Love watching your videos. You know what your talking about and you give your honest opinion without being bias.
Fantastic review. As a previous Civic owner and now WRX owner, I appreciate your insight. Keep up the great work
I need an honest answer ... would you prefer this over the 2015+ STIs ? I really do value your opinion
Wali Garrett If I were you I would get the STI.

Thanks man !!
Wali Garrett both fun cars I'm sure, the reason I would stick with the sti is for the aftermarket support.
The Sti will blow head gaskets and get ring land. EJ is outdated sorry
Yes please!
I didn't really care for this car before all these reviews but now I would really be interested in driving one and possibly looking forward to owning one down the line. Great review EE!
But does it have a drift mode?
Yes, it does. Put the transmission in R and off you go.
But R stands for race mode
Squidward's House get some plastic plates from McDonald's put it on the back wheels put on the brake and you're ready to go
Squidward's House tip to any new driver, going down the freeway trying to race someone put in R (Racing mode) whether it's an auto or manual vehicle.
Squidward's House Wanna know how Ken Block do drift on Focus RS? He use the race mode. see the vid. He says that the drift its just doing for you which its not the same thing, and i guess he know a bit about that. just wondering.
Finally a review of the car itself rather than how Type-R fan boys want it to be.... Thank you!!!!!
wish it was a coupe
Joshuia Shoemaker it is in asia
Hey, your scripting here is great. At points throughout, there were times I had a question or inquiry in my head, seconds later, you had answered it. Very good.
CR-x was my first car, would love if they returned that to the market, or type-r'd the CR-Z and truly did it justice.
Well if the FF layout was so important to the cars "heritage" then why didn't they put in a high revving Vtec engine.... That argument isn't good enough.
MannyFresh1x I think the real reason is for the low emissions required in Europe. An NA engine with that much hp and capacity wouldn't pass. So turbocharging is the way of the future unfortunately.
wouldnt pass emissions standards of today.
A healthy dose of torque is good for a Honda.
Exactly, make it 4wd already with a rear bias o with a dccd. 👽
Thomas Estwick not everything jas to be rwd to be good, leave it to honda to bring the best potential of FF to life
As someone who is going to be shopping for a car within the next year this really makes me want to get a Type R.
Inb4 inevitable ricer comments.
Great job by Honda!
electronic e brake camoooon
Sizze I couldn't agree more.
As a guy who personally swears by Subaru and loves the STi, I have to say that the Type R is impressive. I am excited to see some competition between them in the future.
Finally Honda made something decent after so many years
s2000? eg? ep?
Arthur Borges those cars were at least a decade ago. Honda has been through an era of malaise until the arrival of the new Civic in 2016.
lone mazter all Honda hot hatch, integra, and other type R in their time is decent. You're probably an American hater who never got to experience their previous hot hatches so u talk out of your ass!
EK!
You ought to continue making car reviews.... every minute of it is good and informative
I'm very suprised by that price point. my brother lives outside of Atlanta and there wasn't a single RS under 40k. (obviously not the only thing I took from the video)
I love the little smile just before admit it's better than your old STI
68 dislikes? Well I guess 68 fwd haters watched this video.
King_tazz or just people who think the way a car looks is important... or people who want performance...
this car has neither
really? no performance? watch motor trend or car and driver, it performs better than competition in every way except 0-60 times
Did not know you did car reviews, solid review so much better than other dedicated car review channels!! Keep it up :)
Is this too boy racer looking for a 50 year old ?
Joe Rogan yes. very much ricer kid.
never too old
Nah man these are refined and with tasteful mods you can rock it
Yeah, it's too boy racer looking for boy racers. Lol.
Joe Rogan
I'm with ya.. I'm 50 and I love hatchbacks and lookin to get into another one, but the looks are over the top. Honda should offer a wing delete, and get it in black which would "calm" the looks down a bit. I have a feeling if I test drive it I'll get it.
I love that people hate on the looks its like the wrx back in the day when it first got here everyone thought the styling was so over tge top now its one of the most loved designs in car enthusiasts culture🤷♂️
thieves be like: o yessss i whant this too!!!
Can't to wait to buy one in 5 years when it's worth 5k lol
Jeremy Kyle you could barely get a base civic for that
Yeah, maybe 10 years xD
Jeremy Kyle not even. They still sell some 6th and 7th gens close to 5k where I live.
Wooo... clean 8th gen si's go for 7-8k USD and they came out 10 years ago. And that's for a SI!!! If these prove to be reliable, they will go for 15k at least (probably more) in 10 years.
Please, let me have hope XD to be fair tho in the UK prices for cars go down quick, our insurance is insane but car prices are nice
I love that you make REAL car reviews, not just cliche and shitty reviews...
Needs rear wheel steer.
From a V8 Guy/Mustang 5.0, this is it, this what makes cars fun. He's said 295 Ft-Lbs Tq at 2500, that's FUN and Awesome!!. With Honda Reliability !!! Honda: Making Economy Cars Great Again.
Does this car take whole grain rice or does it have to be fried rice? If anyone knows it would be awesome if you could tell me.
Mark Brown I couldn't tell you other than it beats every car in its class.
Hell, most shops don't carry 18" summer tires either.
