Not going into techniques, but being able to grip your opponent's cloths as in judo, and not being able to as in wrestling (Greco-Roman and free style) makes a big difference, even tho both sports are technicly wrestling
No leg attacks, no bear hugs, no leg grabbing even in defense, no slide bys, no duck unders, no defensive grips, no breaking grip with two hands. A whole lot of what the fuck changes

The rules change a few years ago because they thought Judo was started to look too much like wrestling with competitors arriving from wrestling and that that was not what we wanted to see.
Not always the looser is eliminated. On the Olympic Games, for example, if you loose on the quarter-finals, you can still fight for a 3rd place. This results on two 3rd places.
Do you receive a penalty if your robe comes off (maybe your opponet wraps around your body but under the robe somehow)? It would seem like that could prove to be a signifant advantage.
No, it's not a penalty. As Henry Roberts stated - the referee would stop the match, order the Judoka to dress and then once he's happy that it's not loose, the fight commences. Thanks.
It's a game, there are no bad intentions and you don't want to injure your opponent, so it's not Combat, it's a sport (one of the toughest sports in the world) but still a Game... Same goes for BJJ and Boxing
Yes, all wrestlers have excellent balance, strength to weight ratio, spacial awareness and mental toughness. All qualities that are very prevalent in Judo.
Basically, to avoid a shido or a hansoku make - here is a tip for the judoka - DO IT ABOVE THE OPPONENT'S BELT w/o touching the belt AND YOU WILL AVOID BEING PENALIZED EVERY TIME! They remove wazari awazate ipon (2 wazaris=1 ippon) when they replace Yuko by wazari but put it back a few months later. That's why now 2 former Yuko make ippon.
Apparently not. They keep changing them every six months. I think it's the same, but 2 waza-ari now equals ippon. Again. Expect that to change in another 6 months.
It seems kind of strange that in a grappling art like judo you cant grab the legs! I guess it's stand up grappling more akin to Greco-Roman wrestling than it is to something like bjj or freestyle wrestling.
To my understanding, doing something like a morote gari is illegal in competitions because it will lead injuries. It most likely started back in the late 1890s when Mataemon Tanabe, a jujutsuka of the Fusen-ryū style, took part of a exhibition match in Kyoto. His opponent was Yuji Hirooka, a jujutsuka of the Kasumi Shin-ryū style and 3rd dan judoka. At the end of the match, Tanabe won by scoring a morote gari and applying an ashi garami, a variation of an ankle lock. Although Hirooka gave up, his leg broke as a result. At the next reunion at the Butoku Ka, Kano Jigoro, the founder of Judo, proposed to forbid any leglocks in future regular jujutsu/judo competitions due to the possibility of lasting damage. Both Tanabe and Kaisuke Masuda, a jujutsuka of the Shinnuki-ryū style, object to this, stating Judo is as dangerous as Jujutsu. However, both were overruled.
I think 1 ippon for win rule is so bad, it has to be 2 at least, after first ippon competitors know eachother than maybe the defeated one make 2 counter ippon and win, isn't this way is more fun and fair
Devocean Studio no leg grabbing, no lock other than arm, no aerial chokes... judo used to be a martial art, now it is nothing but a sport. Look "freestyle judo" un on the internet, you will love it.
I just remember the introduction of Leg-Grabbing ban. My Trainers told me , it was because they wanted to seperate their style more from the soviet "Sambo" -Wrestling. Leg grabbing was still allowed as Counter or as Combination. Just not as initial Grab. don't know if they changed that as well. (though it's risky anyways, because the referee might interprete things different than you)
You mean Jujutsu? Take whatever modern Japanese "martial art" sport that ends in "do" (kendo, judo, iaido, etc.), change the "do" to "jutsu", then you get the real martial art version of that sport.
I'm not sure what you mean by 'counter', but if you mean 'striking', then no. You can counter a throw by using your opponents energy against them and throwing yourself, as in 0:47 of the video. Blue tries to throw, but white counters with a throw of his own, forcing blue to land on his back. Hope that helps?
Not anymore. Grabbing the legs was banned completely in 2009. Before that, judo had double legs, single legs, and pickups just like wrestling. Now, they're just techniques you learn for your belt test.
Usually for two reasons - one, it's a winter sport and it's usually cold. And two, it's a way of showing support by waving, holding them in the air (look up 'Liverpool's You'll Never Walk Alone' and you'll see what I mean).
