    Bamboo shoots are considered as one of the useful health foods because of their rich contents of proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, fibres, and minerals and very low fat. Though bamboo shoots provide lots of health benefits, their consumption is confined mostly to Southeast Asian and East Asian countries.

    Seeing your Grandmother sitting there while you guys are processing the bamboo brings tears to my eyes. There is no other place in the world that she would prefer to be than just sitting there near your family. She may be quiet, but she feels safe. Cherish her and treat her better than a Queen. Since my Mother passed away at 85 years of age and living 13 years from a major stroke, she was just so happy to be with family.

    A lot of this reminds me of being a kid in southern Kentucky. We had no indoor plumbing, used an outhouse, and took baths in a big wash tub. It's fulfilling to chop wood, and cook over an open flame with food you caught or killed yourself. It can be a great way of life but it gets lonely in the country.

    At 54 years it was funny to watch this video as it illustrated my life growing up around a large family, farm, roasters, chickens, pigs, mum, Dad, brothers, sisters, cousins, neighbours all come together. Life in the 70's and 80's was hard, difficult and we where not that poor. We enjoyed it and we were a happy family. My father had a toddy business, had fishing boats and was a policeman too Mum was a housewife taking care of the animals, garden with US all. We where 13 in total as a family. No TV until 1983, no phones, no PlayStation etc. We play ball and all outdoor games children find playful. Today I am home only with my wife, three bedroom house empty, three TV, smartphones, big cooker range, electric oven, fridges, microwave, internet, money in my bank account but I am lonely, unhappy, grumpy and sad. I travel to many countries in Europe, Africa and Asia that I no longer want to travel long haul. People must enjoy life in whatever way that they feel best and happy.

    My grandmother in Kentucky used to tell me how people would survive during the depression in the 1930's by going out in the woods and picking poke salad and other wild greens and frying 'em up in bacon fat. Most Americans today have lost those kind of skills and probably wouldn't fare very well in a SHTF situation.

      @harry - in some towns (wet/ public markets), you can buy the bamboo shoots already cut up. You just have to soak them for a bit then boil or cook as adobo or with coconut milk. Lot harvested it from the ground, so she had to do additional steps (removing the skin & cutting up).

    I do love adobo though.
    Great vid. Thanks

    Far FAR better entertainment than watching drunken expats stumble down Walking Street. However I did enjoy seeing some of the old business establishments in AC, eateries, public markets, seeing what has become of Clark, etc etc. But now you’ve got a whole new world and I’m happy to watch your presentations, reminds me somewhat of my time in southern Mindanao. I’m really interested to watch the old traditional filipino harvesting, food prep methods and their wonderful primitive methods, vital skills which all people should have.

    • @johnyvik7242
      @johnyvik7242 20 днів тому +1

      AC is a dying town. Philly probably didnt know that when he moved there in 2012. Nor did the people who went into business/bought condos there at California prices. I wouldnt be surprised if they razed Walking Street. Phil is a conservative and religious country. The bars that were there were supposed to be a secret.

    We eat many styles of bamboo shoots in mainland southeast Asia and China. It's a common and inexpensive food. This brought to you by a Wisconsin guy who spends a lot of time in Asia. Never been to the Philippines though, Taiwan many times. Possibly this winter though. Keep the informative videos coming if you would. Thanx

    Lots of interesting stuff going on in the video, Brian. Bamboo is more popular than you think if you like Chinese food. A lot of people have eaten it, but don’t know it. I had it prepared like Lot made it. Don’t worry about the little bit of sugar in it because all that fiber is good for your diabetes and digestive system. About the coral: You have to be careful about that because it is actually a living organism. When I was stationed on Diego Garcia British Indian Ocean Territory we were told to report to sick bay if you got cut on coral. Thankfully, I never got cut. There’s probably some sort of local remedies for it there. I really enjoyed this look at life in the province.

    Using bug zappers outside is generally safe for human eyes, as the outdoor setting allows the light to disperse. However, it is still recommended to place the zapper away from areas where people gather, to avoid direct exposure.

    It was interesting to see how the bamboo is cooked. I've had bamboo shoots before in Chicken chow mein. Hope you guys get the mosquitoes under control.

    Maybe with so many misquitos there, people should sleep under mosquito netting over the beds, mosquitos are the biggest killers on the planet (next to man). Be safe!

    Hey PITP! To easily solve your MOSQUITO problem @ night, buy a CANOPY MOSQUITO NET! You mount it in the ceiling directly over your bed and the net will drape over your entire bed to the floor. Problem solved my friend.
