    I like to add powdered milk to the dry ingredients if milk is needed for preparation. I also have powdered eggs & butter. And, I found maple sugar on Amazon I use in my oatmeal. I just try to make pantry mixes as complete as possible. 🥛 🥚 🧈 🍁 Sacramento, California USA 🇺🇸

      Hey! You do what you can. I think some people put guidelines out on the Internet for best sustainable practices, and since jars can be abundant second-hand, thats why they say that. But you are absolutely correct that sometimes these lines of thought do not consider the differently abled. If you are not "canning" and just doing dry storage like these, then you could reuse old pasta jars or whichever you may already have at home. I am excited for your new journey. Will the baking powder still be good? When a box cake is expired it does not rise?

    • @TheExperimentalHomestead
      @TheExperimentalHomestead  3 місяці тому

      This is a really good question. I personally don't have an issue with using baking soda past its expiration but I would probably get a bit weird about it as it approached a year. Alas, these baking mixes would never last a year for me so I dont have to worry. I do believe the expiration does start to impact the rising ability. So, there are options here. You could freeze your mixes if you have lots of freezer spaces, you could just note to use them sooner or write the expiration on the baking mix for your comfort. You could also omit the baking soda and then add it with the wet ingredients.
      I hope this was helpful!

    • @susieramick7202
      @susieramick7202 2 місяці тому

      Hi, any mixes that are past expiration date I add baking powder. I judge how much baking powder (using a half to one teaspoon) by how long the product has expired.
      Just made a 11 month expired box of blueberry muffin mix turned out great. Also add the baking power little extra liquid and you'll have great pancakes😊
      Rainy day I'm going to jar your mixed today. Thanks😊

All three are coauthored by Karine Eliason, Nevada Harward, and Madeline Westover, three home economists. They cover everything from dry, shelf stable mixes, and seasoning mixes, to freezer mixes. @jackiewilson-hp5pj (used copies) of "MAKE A MIX COOKERY" & "MORE MAKE A MIX COOKERY" can be found online by using the Google search bar.
