  • NOT DROWNING - MANGINI
"Not Drowning" is now available on all streaming platforms. A description of the Lyrics is Below.
    foundation-media.ffm.to/notdr...
While listening to the chorus part of this song sometime in 2018, I heard word sounds in my mind and the word “drowning” fit it pretty well. I didn’t want to write about it literally though. Also, the lyrics on this album are supposed to be simple and quickly digestible with sound, then meaning as the order of importance.
Searching terms related to "drowning" is what led me to the word “confusion.” That made me think of the confusion surrounding the findings of Quantum Mechanics as one example. I found instances of physicists and mathematicians saying that the test results seemed strange and “wrong" and that they could not reconcile it with their view of reality. Some said there are things about it we cannot know, or maybe are not supposed to know. Einstein died confounded by Q.P. spending countless hours trying to reconcile it with the reality he knew. The myriad of unfounded conjectures outside the physics community conjured up a visual of a sea of unqualified internet commenters, and also a comedy skit with an agenda to manipulate viewers' perceptions of something under the guise of "it's just comedy."
Another interpretation is found within various and numerous situations that are not what they are claimed to be and are not fully understood until the strategically placed veil of confusion gets torn down via the power of Critical Thinking.
For a song lyric, I tried to find words that fit the meaning of the lyric a little bit, but that had a better sound than other words that were too literal.
I thought this might be interesting to know about. At the end of the day, it’s just a song for rocking out!
    Lyrics:
A sunny pool in a sunny nation.
It got heated up from Penetrating Radiation.
But I jump right in, I can’t see.
can’t see what’s in front of me.
what’s right there; my eyes are closed.
    and I don’t know, what I don’t know
    is in front of me.
    What’s in front of me?
    still I don’t know, where I go
    deep, deep down I fathom
I’m not drowning- I’m not drowning.
    I’m being held - underwater.
    I’m not drowning.
I am being held, but I will breathe!
A funny Fool on a sunny day.
it’s a comedy show, but not funny - nay.
So I jumped right in, I couldn’t see.
couldn’t see right in front of me.
What was right there, in front of my nose.
he’s fooling me with all the things I don’t know
    are in front of me.
    What’s in front of me?
things I’m not supposed to know,
    shove me fathoms down.
I’m not drowning- I’m not drowning.
    I’m being held - underwater.
    I’m not drowning.
I am being held, but I will breathe!
    Something’s wrong, something’s wrong
I’m not drowning, so what’s going on?
I know something’s wrong, been here too long.
    I am being held underwater
    I will breathe!

Mike, thanks for your time in Dream Theater. As a drummer, I’ve learned so much from your interpretation of their songs, and I’m beyond sorry that you’re leaving. Your playing is so imaginative, so creative, so musical, and so collaborative with the other band members, in ways I didn’t know were possible. I’ve learned more as a drummer from your Dream Theater songs than I have from those previous to your time, or from anything else. I love your playing and will continue to support you in everything you do. I’m now off to buy this album. All the best for the future Mike 🤜🤛

Mike… Can’t thank you enough for your contributions to Dream Theater over the past (…has it really been..?) 13 years. I’ve been a DT fan since ’92 and “Distance Over Time” and “View” are among my favorite albums. It was a thrill to meet you a couple of times and see you play live. It’s bittersweet to hear of your departure but I look forward to hearing all of your future work. Bravo, maestro. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

I used to hate it when MP left DT, but as time passed by, I realized you were not only the perfect replacement but also the band's drive for achieving higher levels of musical proficiency. Although I have always been a fan of Portnoy's playing, I must humbly admit that your drumming will forever be unmatched. I have never heard such complex drumming in my entire life!!! To me, The Alien reflects the true nature of your talent: undoubtedly extraterrestrial! THANK YOU!!!

Even if DT is my favorite band, it took me years to listen to the Mangini era... I don't know, I felt kind of like a Portnoy "widow" or something. But man, once I saw an interview with Mangini and saw what a great person he seems to be, I changed my mind and binged all of his DT stuff. Needless to say... I'm a Mangini simp now lol.
I'm actually sad now to see him gone... but I know that I will now follow him wherever his career leads him.

Honestly, i dont know what to say, Mike. Having you as DT's drummer really give us whole new listening experience. As JP once said, 'youve set the bar really high', i dont know how to 'adjust' my ears to the 'today DT' without you behind the kit.
I just really, really sad to hear the news. Without your mindblowing drum fill on 'The Alien', im not sure we would get that Grammy Awards.
Thank you, thanks a lot Mike Mangini. From Indonesia with a lot of love and respect you. I just cant forget when we see you for the first time at MEIS 2011.
All the best for you, Mike Mangini.

I am late to the party, having only just heard about Portnoy's return. I'm going through severe ambivalence right now, as much as I was a fan of his, I had become an even bigger fan of yours, not just because of your technique, but for your infectious, highly animated stage presence and genuine, humble personality. It has been an honor and a privalege getting to experience your contributions to my all-time favourite band. I could not have wished for a better person to fill those shoes and to say I'll miss you in them would be a crushing understatement.
I think I need to go pick up a copy of Invisible Signs and prepare for what lies ahead, may your journey ahead be paved with success and fulfillment.

Im so sad with your departure from dream theater...each of the albums with you is a revelation in drumming. With EVENTS it was Lost Not Forgotten. With self titled Enemy Inside and Illumination Theory. With Astonishing it's Life left Behind and A New Beginning. With DISTANCE it was s2n and Pale Blue Dot...and of course THE ALIEN......these songs are the stand out drumming geniuses in each album.
But there's also Transcending Time and The Looking Glass which are so whimsical and melodious......
You never over play things. Each note is precise and fits perfectly for the song.....and they are damn uncopyable.

I knew of you and a few of your projects before your stint with the group but really came to become a huge fan of yours during your tenure. I really don't understand this move by them other than toxic fan service. Even the photo on their website has Portnoy photoshopped in. Pretty much a kick in the balls from those in the know. But I am not worried about you. You seem to be a humble and gracious man. There will be no lack of work for you that is for sure, and I am looking forward to your creations in the future. Thanks for the amazing work you did with Dream Theatre. You took drumming to new heights with the band, you just keep getting better and better. It's cool and scary at the same time!
I love this song and I look forward to witnessing what you make of your solo career. This song is now in my gym playlist.
Good luck to you, Mike. We love you
