They could have asked for support during this six month period and I bet there was some good backup/temporary replacements for LaBrie in that time. I feel like there's a lot they could and would have done to avoid LaBrie's loss in vocal quality/range after the incident. Biggest problem was probably LaBrie himself and his ego.
Portnoy might have technically less chops but he would write music that moved based on his chops. The quick parts were a burst of emotion and creativity, not an opportunity to prove how fast you can do a one handed single stroke roll
As a none pro musician, a just love to play instruments(guitar for me) and loves music and also a fan of dreamtheater, this gives me a 50/50, 50% of enjoying their music for how technical and progressive it was, and 50% for kinda depressing and have anxiety feels because of how i suck playing it😑😂

A professional drummer is suppose to play the music and play the instrument clear and even. A one handed drum roll is a technique for visual and soloing. Playing the hi hat right handed then left handed is a visual technique, not a musicality. If so, every top drummer would be doing it. So now it would be said that if Mangini was out, Portnoy could fill in but the music would sound like shit because he doesn't have the technique of Mangini, now that is funny.

Playing left handed on the hi hat gives you different opportunies but you wouldn't have guessed that because youre not a drummer. 4. Technique is important because if you don't have technique trying to play something its going to sound sloppy.

As far as I can tell, Portnoy decided to leave DT because he just wanted a break from doing the same music time and again for over twenty-five years. Paraphrasing Chick Corea "... listen to the music. Don't count it out. Don't listen for the chord changes. Just listen..." DT's music doesn't engage me like it used to. For me, this clip feels similar to the Rush 'Clockwork Angels' tour. When you're an aging rock band playing with a symphony orchestra, it's time to figure out something else. In a sad sort of way, I'm glad Rush is no longer performing. I hope DT finds their golden sunset.

What does being more technical have to do with delivering music. Mangini does one handed shit that is only admired as showman ship. Portnoy played the DT music and played it excellent. A drum battle lol, that is worthless. Execution off the music is what is important. Mangini could beat many drummers that a musically better than him. The best drummers are not working on one handed rolls, playing 2 times faster than the music, and playing ambidextrous. Musically Chambers, Vinnie, Steve Smith fir example blows Mangini away musically. They are not working on playing with their toes. If it was important they would do it. Mangini is fantastic but stop with this more technical shit. What, Portnoy misses beats or something so he is less technical lol?
Technically mangini can be replace by computer software, or even an apps, is hard to find soulfull, fun and easygoing person like portnoy, its just like picking real flesh and bone person as wife over robotic sex machine....music is all about feeling and soul, skill is tools for implementing creativity and arts not the other way arround...

When you watch it, it looks boring. It's a little bit different when you just listen to it. Portnoy's drumming is flashy and lively. Both of them can create wonderful musical piece. Best way to appreciate is just listen and not "watch" both of them are really proficient.
