Or even the more accessible stuff like Wither, Peruvian Skies, I Walk Beside You, On the Backs of Angels? And if so, then, what are you doing here on a DT video? 😀

They could have asked for support during this six month period and I bet there was some good backup/temporary replacements for LaBrie in that time. @kcorpora1 3 роки тому

@@marshaltito7369 No, technique in drumming has to do with visual more than the music. Mangini plays left and right handed, meaningless to the music. Visually is a different matter. A professional drummer is suppose to play the music and play the instrument clear and even. A one handed drum roll is a technique for visual and soloing. Playing the hi hat right handed then left handed is a visual technique, not a musicality. If so, every top drummer would be doing it. So now it would be said that if Mangini was out, Portnoy could fill in but the music would sound like shit because he doesn't have the technique of Mangini, now that is funny.

    • @marshaltito7369
      @marshaltito7369 3 роки тому +2

@@kcorpora1 1. Mangini plays with both his left and right hand on the hi hat because he doesn't follow traditional drumming, watch the video on his drum rig.
      2. A single hand playing 16th notes is going to have a different feeling than using 2, Neil played 16th notes on the hi hat with 1 hand on Tom Sawyer and it has a tighter and way different feeling.
      3. Playing left handed on the hi hat gives you different opportunies but you wouldn't have guessed that because youre not a drummer.
      4. Technique is important because if you don't have technique trying to play something its going to sound sloppy.

Please don't misunderstand my comments: Petrucci, Myung, Rudess, and
Mangini (Portnoy too) are some of the most accomplished musicians on the
entire planet. I respect their talents enormously.
As far as I can tell, Portnoy decided to leave DT because he just wanted
a break from doing the same music time and again for over twenty-five
    years.
Paraphrasing Chick Corea "... listen to the music. Don't count it
out. Don't listen for the chord changes. Just listen..."
DT's music doesn't engage me like it used to.
For me, this clip feels similar to the Rush 'Clockwork Angels' tour.
When you're an aging rock band playing with a symphony orchestra, it's
time to figure out something else. In a sad sort of way, I'm glad Rush
is no longer performing. I hope DT finds their golden sunset.

For me at least is more about the feel, Mangini sounds like a drum machine, Portnoy's style was More loose, he complemented the rest of the band while showing off His skills, without interrupting the flow of the song. When Mangini does it it just sounds weird. Take the ending of Finally Free as a example

Mangini makes Portnoy look like Portnoying he’s just so much tighter of a musician

Don’t understand the Portnoy comments. Portnoy would get lit up by Mangini in a drum battle. Don’t believe me? Watch Portnoy in a drum duo with Billy Rymer from Dillinger Escape Plan. Search it on UA-cam. Portnoy gets surprised by Billy, for sure. Portnoy is amazing, but Mangini is technically superior without question.

What does being more technical have to do with delivering music. Mangini does one handed shit that is only admired as showman ship. Portnoy played the DT music and played it excellent. A drum battle lol, that is worthless. Execution off the music is what is important. Mangini could beat many drummers that a musically better than him. The best drummers are not working on one handed rolls, playing 2 times faster than the music, and playing ambidextrous. Musically Chambers, Vinnie, Steve Smith fir example blows Mangini away musically. They are not working on playing with their toes. If it was important they would do it. Mangini is fantastic but stop with this more technical shit. What, Portnoy misses beats or something so he is less technical lol?

Technically mangini can be replace by computer software, or even an apps, is hard to find soulfull, fun and easygoing person like portnoy, its just like picking real flesh and bone person as wife over robotic sex machine....music is all about feeling and soul, skill is tools for implementing creativity and arts not the other way arround...

Most people find Mangini's drumming as soulless and not musical. That is not really the case. It seems that way because of his drum arrangement and how he uses his hands. When you watch it, it looks boring. It's a little bit different when you just listen to it. Portnoy's drumming is flashy and lively. Both of them can create wonderful musical piece. Best way to appreciate is just listen and not "watch" both of them are really proficient.

I'm still pretty much sure that Marco Minneman's rehearsal performance of 'Dance of Eternity' in his tiny little practice studio is one of the best covers (ua-cam.com/video/X47bCUsolII/v-deo.html). Don't forget Mike Portnoy counting out from the song chart (ua-cam.com/video/vswDu3IlUbg/v-deo.html)

This type of music is a kind of piece that you should stay focus at all times or else you'll be kicked out from its time signature and tempo..
