Tried this in the past but this is the 1st time I've actually had some real success. As things came up I put them on a needs, wants, and need-but not right now, list. That 3rd category helped. I did spend $24 on food outside of the home this month, but it was a big improvement for me. I put an additional $438 into savings!
There is something 'broken' in the system when people cannot afford to warm the air in their homes in winter. How much extra strain does this place on the economy should they fall sick, have to take time off and end up queuing in Dr Surgery. Call to government for greater regulation in the sector to ensure energy affordability and economy.
Our local pub does seniors two course meal for £5.49! We do treat ourselves once a week. It means not switching the oven on, not quite so healthy but a treat to be socialising and out of the house. Xxx
I think this is a great addition to the weekly budget......yes, food without using your own oven but, even better, the socilalising.....so important. 😊
Like dieting, no spend can really feel miserable. I need to do both. My mindset on no spend is to really enjoy all the things I already have, books, DVDs, art supplies, comfy warm bed, pizza dough in the bread maker, seeing snowdrops come up in the garden, my animals, beauty supplies, good clothes, I feel rich when I think of it all. Takes away that wanting feeling. We’re using up pantry stocks and some dinners are a bit weird but good. On dieting, trying fasting 16:8, so simple and feels sustainable and accidental donuts can be accommodated 😂. Having slipped over twice in the last week, I actually feel like an accidental donut. You have to laugh 😂. Thanks for the smiles and inspiration x x
Hello dear lady, small tip for your freezer... pull out the plug and simply leave the door closed. The contents will then remain normally frozen for 5 hours. The motor then receives a kind of reset. Then briefly open the door, open all the drawers and close them again and close the door again. Nine times out of ten this helps. I think the engine just needs to rest for a while.
Food costs have been awful here in Toronto Canada. So now I buy from the discount racks and make more soups. Lentils is a great addition to the shopping list. I found decent quality tuna at the discount store (dollar store here) for both me and the cats even a treat for the dogs. Thank God I quit smoking a long time ago.
Today while at the grocery store I told my husband I wanted a pizza because I've been craving one. He looked startled and asked if I was going to buy one to take home. I just laughed and said I'm craving it, not buying it. I'll make one at home. I'm finally getting good at resisting the temptation of buying processed food. Making it at home always tastes better anyway. Great video Vivi.
Yes, I too am cold in house. Everything is expencive, Had to get ridd of car too as fixes were about £500 ....£ 600 each time. Just puting on jumpers and thick socks etc. plus a God send, my two hotwatere bottles that I have on my lap and if need be the other one I put against my chest to keep me snug under soft blanky, I make a cuppa etc. then when warmed up and feeling less blue, I will get on with tidying and prepare everything for the evening with kettle of hot water for to flannel body wash with by my little fire I make only once for a few hours before bedtime with two hotwater bottles ready in my bed ....snug as a bug in a rug. : ) not saying it's what I want but it is what I need for these expensive times. Hugs n Love Viv and who ever reads this. Yes it is Brrrr.
This was my 4th year doing no spend and I blew it at the beginning of the year. Ok here is my take on this: my silly excuse 1. I have never had a happy meal from McDonald’s so FOMO (fear of missing out) set in when I heard they now had an adult one with a bigger prize. So for $13 dollars plus tax, I got a chicken burger, fries, a drink and a toy chicken nugget. I let my son in law have the supersize soda because I don’t drink that. He drank only 1/4 of it. The fries were cold and very salty. I liked the chicken burger that usually costs $3.99. Here is the real kicker: tonight I had a chicken burger and fried rice that cost me less than $1 to make at home. Lesson learned and I continued successfully and saving loads.
I made a list of pantry items that I want to use up - old canned products, a few freezer things like green beans and chillies from the garden two seasons ago, some noodles I had forgotten about, chutney and marmalade from years ago! In January I managed to use up ten items from that list, so happy I used them rather than throw out. Love your chats Vivi, so sensible and positive. Love from Albury, New South Wales, Australia.
Hey Vivi. I’m on third year of no spend. It’s a constant reality now. Last August and December were “cheated” on. But, I have zero debt! and am managing to stay debt free. This is a significant accomplishment for me. I’ve been much more vigilant about tracking my spending. I do this daily now and I make a monthly summary and examine each amount and honestly assess the necessity of those purchases. I’ve had to have some dental work (cheapest option) but I’ve saved for that. I must say it’s such a relief to be debt free and managing. Cheers.💜🐇
Hi Vivi. I too have had some unexpected necessary spends this month. What I do when I have had to pay out for something or if I slipped up by giving in to temptation, is add another week onto the end of my challenge. My slip ups tend to be with my daughters and my grandchildren. I struggle not to treat them as their parents are all struggling and treats are non existent for them. I love your pep talks, they help me to stop beating myself up. x
Great points Vivi 💕 you speak such sense 😊 Blooming freezer though! January has been tough for us, emotionally. We have been relying on doughy 🍞 🍩 things and takeaways to pick us up. I know it’s not the answer but I think the important thing is we recognise what and why we are doing it. Financially (bittersweetly) we are doing better though as what we lost 💔 cost us much more monthly than what we are spending on frivolously. In February we aim to try and work on this. I like the idea of putting it towards my garden 🥕🥬 🌺 and bird food ❤️🐦. I think anyone starting of low/ no spend will get so much from this video, packing a lunch/ taking water is something I’ve always done and would instantly make an impact to someone who doesn’t already. Lots of love, Charlotte 😘
Ach, I'm so sorry to hear that it has been a tough month for you (I hear you needing the comfort from doughy things!). I so hope the worst of it is behind you.........take care lovely....and massive hugs to you. X
What has really helped me is making a grocery list before shopping, making meals that make me 2-3 meals or into other meals. I only have $72.50 a week grocery budget and I eat majority organic foods. So, if I make chili, what is left over I make chili spaghetti or sloppy joes. If I have any $$ left over I stock up. This year is a no buy year, unless it is a need. Springtime I hit the garden =)
Hi Vivi. I have actually had a great no spend January. Only what was in budget. I even presented my husband with the challenge of a no spend /low spend month. I told him he didn't have to do no spend but tru to do low spend and letseat from our freezer and pantry. He has been really great as he cooks on the weekends while I do Mon-Thurs. I alwats pack a lunch for work and I have my water bottle with always. Thanks for all the encouragement you give. I have rather enjoyed this challenge. I do have to spend a little next month but I have been putting money away for the garden improvements that I will be doing to get readyfor spring so it won’t hurt to spend ad it has been allotted already. Stay warm sweetie.
Good evening Vivi. I had to go low spend instead of no spend January, already in the beginning of the month, my sons Birthday, then my sisters Birthday, and then it was my turn to host the girls night. I am going on a no spend February, as I have no expensive plans for February, March has 2 Birthdays, a work seminar to Stockholm and Easter... So need to tighten the belt in February! 🙂 oh yes, I have still money after the expensive month, not much but happy about that.
Haven't even finished watching yet. I'm just wondering how low the temperature in the flat gets. Some fridges and freezers don't work unless the ambient temperature is above a certain level so I wondered if that might cause them motor/compressor to overwork. I hear you on the bills - it's the same where I live and a lot of previously non-frugal people have stopped putting the heating on regularly.
It's a bonkers situation where even dual wage households are having to keep theirs off too. Fortunately it has been a little warmer in the last few days - phew!
Not a no spend but a more thoughtful spend. Last night at 11 30pm almost shopped online for no good reason. Butni left things in the cart and said to myself look at it again in the morning. And now i realoze i dont need or really want it. So that was a success 😊
No spend month, Oh I wish ! My husband had his van and all his tools + carpet for the days work stolen 2 weeks ago. Insurance not ready to pay out yet, no sign of any of the stuff stolen. Need to reboot and start the year again I think. Keep warm Vivi. Xxx
OMG, that's AWFUL!!!!! I try not to have any hate in my life....but I do HATE scumbag thieves.......really loathe them! Fingers crossed the insurance comes through soon. So sorry this happened to you. 😥😒
Another fantastic video as always. You are just a breath of fresh air. So relatable and non judgmental. Taking my water bottle everywhere with me and snacks is a real game changer. For anyone struggling with cooking with scratch I really recommend a slow cooker x
Fridges and freezers dont like cold temps, maybe that's what's wrong with them. I read that some turn of at below 10 degrees because it's too cold for them.
It was a no spend Month for use until.. our pickup broke down twice. We did the repairs ourselves, but it still cost us $1400.00 in U.S. money. Like you said, we had the money because we don't spend much throughout the year. It is comforting when something breaks to know the money is there!
I have only spent on food and bills, however I had large vet bill for one of my dogs. I’m hoping to move in the next couple of months I have saved to buy things for the new house.
I just love this and think you’re fab!😂 I budget/organise my low income and some of the ways I do it are similar to your mindset, not all, but there’s definitely a crossover. I’m really enjoying these videos and the book ones in particular 😀
I spend roughly €159-175 for just 2 people. We eat really well and organically. We don’t drink or smoke and good food is about prevention from sickness and disease rather than a luxury. We both work and have no small children so we can do this. I put good food above all else. Love your channel ❤
Another great video Vivi. We didnt buy each other useless xmas presents. Went out a couple of weeks ago got a fabulous winter coat for £30. An ideal gift at a great price. I look like a sleeping bag pumped up, but its deliciously warm. Much better than a present I really didnt need. Take care lovely one 😊🌹
Great video Vivi, I too started a no spend January. Roof damage during a storm was number one , heating controls was the number two, Car Tyre was number 3. All large bills but luckily all things that I have sinking funds for so this didn’t scupper my budget. Only one small trip to the supermarket for fresh fruit and veg. I did allow myself some of my non discretionary spending money but I have spent less than 25% of my normal allowance. This has allowed me to supplement some of the funds I needed to spend when Murphy kept calling. I intend to try and continue into a no spend February.
Great video again, very help as always. i'm about to pay £1500 car bill. but luckily we did some no spend months last year and just saved some money each month as well. we saved enough to pay for it. come the 1st of February i will start the saving again.
LOL Vivi, for the Money Police soundbite ! Thank you for your encouraging video... you sound just like me justifying a good book purchase; I don't ever see myself being able to curtail my book habit but I know this and have a couple dollars budgeted monthly for them at the resale store. I know to not look at nothing other than books when I go to those stores. : )
Hi Vivi, I do hope it warms up soon for you. I really understand what you mean about heating prices through the roof. My bill last week was gulp worthy and it's always been on the expensive side anyway. I try as much as possible to keep the thermostat down but sometimes it's impossible due to the drafts and I get cold so easily. I do try other ways as well to reduce the electric bill. I shudder to think what the bill would be if I didn't try to conserve electricity consumption. I didn't challenge myself to a no spend January though I could have I knew there were things I was going to have to buy. I did prolong purchases as long as possible and the food budget spending was way down due to wanting to use up things I have and because the cost of food is just ridiculous. Thankfully I had some food already to rely on. Anyway, I'll get back to your video now. I just wanted to leave those comments as they came to me while you were talking.
Yay, one outstanding item paid off, one more to go, will be clear this time next month, my month is mid month to mid month. My plan was to not have full no spend as have key family birthdays in feb so use January sales to help with this each year. My aim that I fulfilled was to breakdown annual bills bank the monthly breakdown of this, pay off my two bills,.
Was blazing away at my no spend month until... the solar generator i was saving for was reduced by £700! Speculate to accumulate- that's my excuse, and I'm sticking to it😊😉 (Its great and will save me some cash too, as i will use it regularly over the summer, as well as prepared for any power cuts etc). Apart from my granddaughters birthday next month I shall carry on with no spend throughout February. Wont need any grocery shopping at all next month, so theres a saving straight away, as a batch cooker the menu is planned already for next month without needing to buy any more groceries. We never by food/drink outside the home, more than happy to take a hot drink out in a thermal travel cup! Also we restrict our eating to within a short time frame, so dont need to eat food at certain times. I have lost 4st in a year by doing this, and eating a far healthier diet. Feeling far better for it too, sharper and more energy. Love your channel, very uplifting and like chatting to an old friend.
I think buying the solar generator now at a big discount is really sensible.......you were going to buy it anyway so yes, make the most of the big saving! Yay!
I am loving watching back your videos, im learning an awful lot, thanks to you, but i keep wondering why you haven't replaced your fridge?, maybe you have said and i haven't watched that one yet, x
It's an integrated appliance and needs a new 'cupboard' door too....as does the washing machine.....so it's not a straightforward 'off the shelf' purchase.....
Thank you for the encouragement! I had a few unexpected expenses this month. I do think I have a bit of room for improvement though. 😊 I like the idea of writing everything down. I have a little ledger book that I got several months ago. I just slipped it into my purse to be ready for journaling my spending.
I do postcards and they are mailed to people in targetted states and such. I bought a roll of stickers on Amazon with red white & blue heart shaped stickers to make them look fun and patriotic.
Thank you for this, I find the monthly check in super helpful. A great month here thanks to your videos. Few things I’ve decided. I like wine, that’s not a decision 😂 but I have a “ration” for the year which are the ones I have in the cupboard. I mentioned to people I was doing this and they kindly got me some for Christmas. I’ll also make home brew but no spends on wine for me for the whole year, just drinking what I have (and none before Good Friday). Secondly I am not buying any books all year, first month is a tick. I also started my emergency savings fund this pay day and I am so pleased to be up and running there. Finally (lots more but I won’t go on), rather than inflict my decisions too much on my family, I compromised and said they can have “Treats of the week” instead of treats for a tenner 😂 meaning they pick 3 things for circa £5 total l, which I won’t question. Eat your veg, drink your water but they then have x, y and z too. Happy with that so we don’t fall out. None for me. Take care, Tracy ❤
Yay, this all sounds fab! And I really love the way you're handling doing it within a family......I hope that will be helpful to other folk reading your comment. Good stuff lovely!
I did spend on 3 items but I felt these were essential. I have had a bad flu which is still lurking and have been very shivery at times (and like you, being a widow of a certain age 🫣 can’t afford to put the heating on very much) so bought a pack of 5 wool blend socks for under my boots and 2 second hand Joules wool scarves 🧣 all cheap for gardening 👩🌾 at our community park garden and 1 for church under my cream coat. These have been a life saver during the recent bitter cold winds and snow. I did manage to save more than normal though this month from my pension. 👌 I have roof repairs to save for though which is a worry next month 😔
I think buying items in order to stay warm is classed as essentials.....no guilt for those! I do hope you can get the roof repairs done without too much hassle, stress....and expense. Fingers crossed it all goes well.
Great frugal update Vivi but sad to hear your freezer is playing up ☹️ I’ve had a good month and was able to put some savings in the bank each week…. staying away from Opshops (charity shops) has definately helped! Asking myself do I really need it also keeps the spending down too! Thanks again 😊
Yeah, those slip ups 😅 I noticed I hate having doctor’s appointments and to feel better I always buy coffee, sandwiches, or something to eat after… Some comfort food🥺
Afternoon , Vivi - you look and sound like me- I’m wearing 4 layers of tops ,topped with a hoodie, as I watch ! My house is pretty chilly but heating is expensive- so it’s off. Yes..I’m trying to squirrel away a bit of money to maintain groceries..my rent is going up in July $ 200 + more a month! I’m figuring things out . Cost of living is crazy high here as well . I try to only buy what I need - which Is sort of new to me as I’m really seeing the need to tighten my belt ! So far so good Bc for some of us , when your back is against the wall -you act!! As you say , it’s a bit tough to not give in to frivolous spending. Ha ha ! You nailed it! I do get notions to peruse Etsy now and again and sometimes ( not often , really) treat myself🫣-but no more of that for a bit. I like the idea of making notation of what I buy! It’s all about constant mindfulness, Vivi - is what’s it’s down to is I think you’re saying ! Thank you for the encouragement …! ❤xxx
My husband got an increase on his pension and old age security- now our internet bill is covered. Every penny saved is a penny earned with a 100 percent return and no tax by keeping it😊
Great video. I did pretty well in January. Well had 2 vehicle repairs which were pricey. But I didn’t spend anything except one carry out but I covered that with allotted food budget. It does help me to be more aware on spending. I also do the envelope system and very limited to no spending with credit card.
It’s not just Vivi yes, I have a big blanket over my shoulders at my desk! Brrr, just finished writing an essay and am taking a break avoiding the referencing for the duration of this video with a nice hot coffee😊. On working days I find it easy to just eat one good balanced meal a day at dinner time which does stretch the meals and food budget!
Another great video , so helpful and informative . My council Tax is paid monthly over the year, so for two months I don't need to pay it, this money then goes into a savings account ,for emergencies or incidentals . Every little helps as they say. Not a no spend month for me , but I plan on having two months of the year where I don't spend , February and October, work best for me. I admire how disciplined you are Vivi
Ive started asking myself "will I due if I dont have it. Lol just wish I could apply it to my diet. Im pretty sanguine about most things. When I was working I would buy about 3 coffees a day then I added it up. Holey moley. Have max 2 a week now. I have two hottie bottles too and live in NZ (Northland)so we dont get the extreme cold but its often very damp and very wet in winter. Maybe I could fill the hotties with coffee and sit on the couch with a straw.
Actually, sometimes fridges and freezers start act strangely when temperature in the room gets too low. I think I once read they are designed to work at temperatures above 16C.
Goodness.......I don't think my flat has been higher than 16 since October! Actually, last winter it was even colder and the freezer worked OK........I think it's just rather old now. 😉
@@WhatVivididnext Our fridge started to work almost constantly one winter when kitchen was colder than usual (which was really strange, of course one would think it would need work less when room is colder), so I looked up the problem in internet. Can't remember the exact reason why this happens.
Did some research. There are many articles like that (also from manufacturers) - - -/Refrigeration systems rely on the boiling of refrigerant under pressure and heat. When the ambient temperature is below 60ºF, it takes more energy to make the refrigerant boil and change into a vapor. And the energy consumption increases with the decreasing temperature until at 32ºF, there's no cooling capacity at all./
@@WhatVivididnextAh, Vivi…we did not find a computer for him and my laptop is working for him, at the moment. Instead…we ended up purchasing a new washer, dryer & stove to replace our 22-year-old failing (rapidly) appliances. An intense day. But we just happened to walk into a sale, where we got all 3 at half price! The gods were smiling on us today. So, I think the no spend February will be tight. 🙄 What a day. Whew!
@@wyyeti4004 I'm so glad you managed to get those items on sale at least! But, ach, what a blow to the wallet to have to replace all of them in one go!
In December, I started craving treats, so this month I started doing more satisfying dishes that are good for me and making some mild treats such as sugar free muffins, from ingredients that I have at home, instead of buying sweet things.
Hey Vivi, thanks for the great video! I really appreciate your point about sustainability. It's just not good for the planet or our health to constantly overspend on fast food or random things we buy online. If you're a small family l, it's much better to do our shopping at local markets. They may be a bit pricier, but at least we won't be tempted to buy junk food or unnecessary items like alcohol, soft drinks, or chips. It's a small sacrifice for a healthier and more environmentally-friendly lifestyle.
You know Viv I’ve found the heat costs so much more cause of the drafts around the windows and door. If you take a lit candle around the windows and doors when it flickers there’s a draft and if blocked saves money.
Im in the same boat Vivi, i seem to be permanently in a sleeping bag when im sitting down at night. Ive just had to buy a fridge/ freezer, the motor wouldnt turn off at all and was eating the electric😢 anyway I have an emergency fee and so I used that. The electric cost has now gone down - yay! But the heating will have to remain off for as long as possible.
I'm glad you had saved the funds to be able to replace it........and, fortunately, it seems like our days are getting a little warmer.......so less sleeping bag action! 😊
This experiment, Vivi, was VERY enlightening. Discovered that I can’t be trusted with Apple Pay. I need “slow pay” to curb 2am impulses. Damage was reversible, thank goodness. Scratch cooking from the pantry was a big win! A few Vivi recipes got me through in tasty style. Savings? 👍✅ Off topic, just this morning stumbled on “The Lighthouse Stevensons” BBC documentary. What a story, that Bell Rock LH and the treacherous Scottish shoreline. Never thought that remote populations depended on shipwreck pillaging for survival. The spectacular scenery and the Lighthouse Museum are now bucket list “wants”. Will need many more spend free months (years) to make that happen. MOTIVATION!
Maybe thinking to take on kid, cat or dog sitting. Can be simple like checking on people pets at their home. Some single parts that say have a night job and need child care through the night maybe twice a week because the hours are odd and only twice a week can be amazing income.
My mum has her freezer off in the day as they live out in the bush... they only run the freezer at night and some solar..... my point is you can turn the freezer off whilst freezing for an hour or 2 and it won't hurt the freezer. Also I'm wondering how your wiring is working in the kitchen as you replaced you washer ,fridge is struggling or gone and now freezer is struggling?? Stopping video to head off to work... will see you more later🤎🙏🤎
The washing machine was replaced because the entire drum sheared off during a spin. The wiring is fine.......the appliances are all 20 years old now......
Hello Vivi, My January went as planned. I had no extra expenses. I had that in December: lots of wall paint, painter's fleece, brushes, masking tape... that was pretty expensive. But that had to be done. Now I'm really happy about my frugal January. By the way: Do you have a “new” horse? ❤❤❤
Hi Vivi! I'm glad to see you bundled up and hopefully keeping warmer. Winter is such a challenge. I cut my "eating out budget" for January from $432 per month to $88 due to not yet having a car to replace the one I wrecked in December. This does not count groceries that were about $25 per week. I'm actually cooking and baking. The Starbucks near me has been under renovation for over 5 months, so that habit has been pretty much broken! I'm now making coffee with Cafe Bustelo sticks at 20 cents each. 😊 My property taxes increased 263% and are due February 5. Luckily, there's money left from my auto wreck to pay the extra $2500 for this year and to purchase at least a used car. I thank you for taking on this challenge. It makes us all mindful. 🎉
That's a fantastic reduction in your eating out budget, bravo lovely! Eek, but I guess the savings will quickly disappear with the replacement car..... 😊
I don't think you deprive yourself!!! You seem perfectly contented to me, and do everything you want to do.... bet you'd rather play Frisby in the park with a friend... free.... than go bowling!!! 1 game soooo expensive!!! Vivi you out of touch my lovely, with prices, gum at least £1!!! And a coffee try closer to £4 😂😂😂😂😂 I'm the same, I get a shock!!! At prices too!!!! 😮 Flask, and a salad roll girl me! In the park with a book, is my idea of super no spend afternoon... 😊 I'm learning fast !!! Because we need to save.....save save.... did it all last year, and we so proud our savings have reached 4 figures 😂😂😂😂 lots of love Viv, keep up the good work 👏 🙌 👍 ❤
My car cost me £600 this month - not a predictable expense! Nor my fault. So tighten belt time to repay Emergency fund ( obviously i paid for car repair from my emergency fund - i have a separate Car fund which is building towards MOT time. So, iade a list of everything in my freezer and cupboards and we are eating it up. We have a treat day once a month which we call 'Pie Day' where we go out and have coffee and cake. Im pre diabetic so i no longer make cakes at home, which removes temptation- but i can afford, in terms of money and sugar levels to do this once a month. Its the 31st as i type and we havent had our January 'Pie Day' yet! Lol😂. Its important to plan and anticipate our treats, i believe.
Oh I'm a firm believer in planning for and allowing this little treats.......it makes doing no spend sustainable for the long term. Ach, sorry to hear about the car...........thank goodness for pie to distract!
Your freezer may be struggling because the ambient temperature is too low.. (oddly enough) I had similar problem with a chest freezer that I put in an outside garage space, years ago... guy said it wasn't the freezer, the environment was too cold, apparently it was putting a strain on the motor.. See how it is when the heating is on ... The biggest enemy to overspending ,in my opinion, is tippy tappy cards... I need some passport photos... two machines ,they both wanted tappy cards I don't ( won't ) have one . All the local authority toilets in Liverpool are now tappy cards, and the price went up from a 20p wee to a 30p wee..you can't even use the loo !! When you use them you don't get a receipt ! I see young people getting into all kids of trouble , as you say a coffee and a cake here, a nail polish there it all adds up and is all unaccounted for.
I didn't do a no spend January..it's just the wrong month for me. I like to take advantage of the lower prices in January to get what I need and a couple of outings with friends if only to get through winter. I will find it easier to do a no spend/low spend April or May when I can go outdoors and enjoy the sunshine and bring my flask.
Viv you are making me cold watching you . I,m in bed with electric blanket and two boxer dogs I,m to hot now ,this blanket only cost a few pence to run and it great till you have to get out of bed . But that’s life xxxx
Erm, I am a hopeless case Vivi. Lets see... Bird balls...£10.39 Shirley tomato seeds...£2.65 Saw...£6.00 Peppermint oil...£7.49 Dried pppermint...££8.99 Box for summer seed stoage...£16.99 Spots bra for rebounding...£8.99 3 pin plugs x 4...£6.95 Mini greenhouse thermometer for my microgreens...£9.95 T.shirt for partners gym...£8.55 Watercolour brushes...£25.49 Watercolour postcards...£3.99 Soil warming cable for microgreens...£31.39 Sand for cable...£22 6 x led lights for microgreens...£39.99 Silver reflective mylar for microgreens...£3.99 Charger for phone...£8.99 Thats just my Amazon shop and missing my granddaughters birthday gifts...😕🙄
I think January is not the best month for no spend because so many Christmas + winter things are on sale. I would say February is a better choice for no spend month
Vivi sorry to hear your freezer is on the brink…you can’t catch a break. One consolation is you can save more when you buy a kitchen units package. Also noticed in the comments about the temperature being too low in your flat for the appliances to work properly…not right Vivi. At least spring is just around the corner. Take care and try to stay warm. 🌟❤️😘
I menu plan and meal prep weekly. I can't be bothered to cook after work. For the no processed food, I do like to have pizza and it is quite expensive. 1 pizza plus tip and delivery can put me at $25 (£20). I decided to add pizza into the grocery list every other month or so. It saves me so much money and time. My next goal is to make pizza from scratch but have most of the ingredients on hand so I don't feel tempted to order a pizza. I carry a water bottle with me but I also have an extra 1 in the car for the times that I do forget. It has come in handy.
Yay for pizzas from scratch.....soooooo much cheaper than take-away.......even a ready made one from the supermarket would be a good saving. Keep it up lovely. 😊
I make pizza every week when my grandchildren come to stay. I usually make enough dough for 3 weeks which I can bag up and put into the freezer. It costs pennies to make if you don't bother with fancy bread flour.
I managed to stay under our food budget, 750€ for the month. I know it sounds crazy high, but that is breakfast, dinner and snacks for 2 adults & kids and lunch for 2 adults. I finally got my hubby on board with taking lunch to work at least every other day. Except for bills and food I spent nothing!
On a personal note my Lupin passed this week also. It’s truly sad especially when they are your fur babies and no children of my own .@@WhatVivididnext 😥🇨🇦🐝
Good news! Finally paid off my vehicle! 🎉 Celebrateing.
Yay, good on you lovely! 😀
Well done
Tried this in the past but this is the 1st time I've actually had some real success. As things came up I put them on a needs, wants, and need-but not right now, list. That 3rd category helped. I did spend $24 on food outside of the home this month, but it was a big improvement for me. I put an additional $438 into savings!
That's a fantastic chunk put in savings - well done you! 😀
That’s a great idea! I’m a constant list maker….but never thought of dividing my “shopping” list into those categories. Thanks!
Well done 👏 this is fab ❤
There is something 'broken' in the system when people cannot afford to warm the air in their homes in winter. How much extra strain does this place on the economy should they fall sick, have to take time off and end up queuing in Dr Surgery. Call to government for greater regulation in the sector to ensure energy affordability and economy.
Absolutely! It is an absurd situation. 😒
Thank you so much lovely....it sounds like you have a great plan, good on you! 😊
Watching this…just canceled a $76 plant order that I really didn’t even need. I can propagate instead. Ty❤
Fantastic! Happy propagating (and saving!). 😊
Hello dear lady,
small tip for your freezer... pull out the plug and simply leave the door closed. The contents will then remain normally frozen for 5 hours. The motor then receives a kind of reset. Then briefly open the door, open all the drawers and close them again and close the door again. Nine times out of ten this helps. I think the engine just needs to rest for a while.
I thought that too xx
Thank you, I'll give that a go. 😊
Thankyou Vivi! ❤ What book did you buy with your £2??
@@jhodieking6172 'Losing Eden - Why our minds need the wild' 😊
Food costs have been awful here in Toronto Canada. So now I buy from the discount racks and make more soups. Lentils is a great addition to the shopping list. I found decent quality tuna at the discount store (dollar store here) for both me and the cats even a treat for the dogs. Thank God I quit smoking a long time ago.
God smoked 😄 🤣
Today while at the grocery store I told my husband I wanted a pizza because I've been craving one. He looked startled and asked if I was going to buy one to take home. I just laughed and said I'm craving it, not buying it. I'll make one at home. I'm finally getting good at resisting the temptation of buying processed food. Making it at home always tastes better anyway. Great video Vivi.
Yay, good on you lovely! 😊
Yay for our hot water bottles!!! Mine has been in constant action. It amazes me how much warmer I can feel just for having the hottie in my lap. 😊
McDonald's landfill... and I'm not just talking plastic toy..... 😂
Do one of these a month, Vivi? They'll keep us all in check and encourage us so much. Lots of love xx
Cheers lovely.....I may well do. 😉
That's great lovely! I love the idea of having, for example, a whole week of eating (or month!) just from the pantry and freezer. 😊
A good amount in saving, Fail on clothing shopping with the daughters, but i quit smoking!! Five weeks!
Oh my goodness....that is FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!! The best possible thing you could ever do.......bravo lovely......keep it up! XXX
Cheers.💜🐇
That's brilliant....a huge well done to you! 😀
I love your pep talks, they help me to stop beating myself up. x
Please don't ever beat yourself up! Especially about giving lovely treats to the grandchildren. X
A little treat to the grandchildren is a double whammy, it's also a treat for you watching them enjoy it... double the value.
appreciating all the 'no spend' encouragement and motivational advice to low / no spend
Oh that's great, thank you. 😊
@@WhatVivididnextthank you so much Vivi 💕🥰
What has really helped me is making a grocery list before shopping, making meals that make me 2-3 meals or into other meals. I only have $72.50 a week grocery budget and I eat majority organic foods. So, if I make chili, what is left over I make chili spaghetti or sloppy joes. If I have any $$ left over I stock up. This year is a no buy year, unless it is a need. Springtime I hit the garden =)
Brilliant! 😀
Yay, good on you lovely. 😊
Good luck with it lovely. 😊
Phew......close call! Good on you for stepping away for a few hours......that's such a good technique. 😊
"Let's encourage each other" Yep! We learn from our mistakes as well as our successes. As long as we learn 😊
Hear, hear! 😊
Just those simple little tweaks like taking a water bottle and snacks with you can add up to a big difference over a year - good on you lovely. 😊
@@WhatVivididnextoh absolutely especially when it can be anywhere between £2-3 for a bottle of water out! Madness
I have not bought anything this month, eg clothes lol. Soooooo treated myself to new knobs for my cooker.
The outfit is reminiscent of the Little Match Girl. Very cute Vivi:)
Oh dear......I hope I don't experience the same end as her! 😉
Thank you for the no processed food challenge and the dont leave the house without food/drink rule. These feel doable!
Yay! Yes, definitely doable.......and the 'no processed' food you might find particularly fun/inspiring if you dive into new recipes. Have fun!
This video is a boost I needed. Brilliant, Vivi! 😁👍
Thank you lovely! 😊
Ugh, sorry you had such a big bill but good on you for living frugally and saving so you had the cash there. 😊
I have only spent on food and bills, however I had large vet bill for one of my dogs. I’m hoping to move in the next couple of months I have saved to buy things for the new house.
I hope your dog is OK. 💖 Good luck with the move. 😊

I just love this and think you’re fab!😂 I budget/organise my low income and some of the ways I do it are similar to your mindset, not all, but there’s definitely a crossover. I’m really enjoying these videos and the book ones in particular 😀
Thank you so much lovely, it's very nice to hear positive feedback! 😊
Sorry about the loss of rusty I am sure he will be missed on the plot
Thank you lovely......yes, we were all very fond of him....cuddles were needed at the cafe this morning.
I spend roughly €159-175 for just 2 people. We eat really well and organically. We don’t drink or smoke and good food is about prevention from sickness and disease rather than a luxury. We both work and have no small children so we can do this. I put good food above all else. Love your channel ❤
Yay, three cheers to that! A roof over one's head and really good food......those are the priorities! 😊
I love your style of gift giving.....something practical....and wait until the sales to buy it! It sounds like a super cosy coat. 😊
I'm doing a very low buy 2024. January was great as I spent less than $100 on food since I also did a freezer and pantry challenge.
That's great! Keep it up. 😊
Thank you so so much for these videos! Helps so much

Great stuff 👍
Great video Vivi, I too started a no spend January. Roof damage during a storm was number one , heating controls was the number two, Car Tyre was number 3. All large bills but luckily all things that I have sinking funds for so this didn’t scupper my budget. Only one small trip to the supermarket for fresh fruit and veg. I did allow myself some of my non discretionary spending money but I have spent less than 25% of my normal allowance. This has allowed me to supplement some of the funds I needed to spend when Murphy kept calling. I intend to try and continue into a no spend February.
Yay, good on you lovely! 😊
So sorry and sad to hear about the amazing Rusty x

Great video again, very help as always. i'm about to pay £1500 car bill. but luckily we did some no spend months last year and just saved some money each month as well. we saved enough to pay for it. come the 1st of February i will start the saving again.
I'm so glad you were ahead of the game and did some no spend last year.....phew, a big relief to have the money for the car bill.....well done! 😊
well done. Pay no interest to these companies...
I see books like food......I need them to feed me. 😉
Cheers lovely. Fortunately it is beginning to warm up a bit here......I even took my hoodie off the other day! 😉
@@WhatVivididnext Very glad to hear it has warmed up for you Vivi. 🤗
Sometimes I run a humidifier in the winter, it takes the edge off the chill in the room.
Good stuff lovely....sounds like you've got a great system in place. 😊
I like the idea of writing everything down. I have a little ledger book that I got several months ago. I just slipped it into my purse to be ready for journaling my spending.
Yay, good on you lovely. 😊

I find no spend really empowering and often do a no spend year. This month = massive dental work so thankfully I've got a few savings to dip into!
Phew, glad you've built up the funds to cope with the big bill. 😊

That's a great 'trick' with your council tax......I do the same with my water bill for a couple of months. 😊
Hahahaha.....do it, I dare you. 😉
This is a good point as ours are in the garage but were advertised as suitable for outbuildings.

Fortunately, here, it has warmed up a bit.......and I can feel the days getting a little longer. 😊
Yes and here in the NW of England we get a bitter North Wind. Just saw a news flash today that we might get more snow shortly too 😟
Hey Vivi, thanks for the great video!
Hear, hear. 😊
You know Viv I’ve found the heat costs so much more cause of the drafts around the windows and door. If you take a lit candle around the windows and doors when it flickers there’s a draft and if blocked saves money.
Fortunately mine are all a good, tight fit. 😊
Great tip Vivi 💓
This experiment, Vivi, was VERY enlightening. Discovered that I can’t be trusted with Apple Pay. I need “slow pay” to curb 2am impulses. Damage was reversible, thank goodness. Scratch cooking from the pantry was a big win! A few Vivi recipes got me through in tasty style. Savings? 👍✅
Off topic, just this morning stumbled on “The Lighthouse Stevensons” BBC documentary. MOTIVATION!
Sounds like a fab documentary! Hmmmm....re the Apple Pay....at least you have identified the 'problem'......slow pay sounds like a much better idea. 😉
It is definitely doable. Start with just lunches or just for 3 days…
Hear, hear. 😊
oh no, those types of things going wrong pull more power and raise your bill
Maybe thinking to take on kid, cat or dog sitting. Can be simple like checking on people pets at their home. Some single parts that say have a night job and need child care through the night maybe twice a week because the hours are odd and only twice a week can be amazing income.
That's a great idea.....I hope you can get a few 'gigs' like this. 😊
Hello Vivi,
My January went as planned. I had no extra expenses. I had that in December: lots of wall paint, painter's fleece, brushes, masking tape... that was pretty expensive. But that had to be done. Now I'm really happy about my frugal January.
By the way: Do you have a “new” horse? ❤❤❤
I'll be spending on some paint soon too. Awwww, my wee horse.......not new, just in a new place for now. 😊
My property taxes increased 263% and are due February 5.
Flask, and a salad roll girl me! In the park with a book, is my idea of super no spend afternoon... 😊
I'm learning fast !!! Because we need to save.....save save.... did it all last year, and we so proud our savings have reached 4 figures 😂😂😂😂 lots of love Viv, keep up the good work 👏 🙌 👍 ❤
Hahaha....yes, definitely out of touch......but definitely not deprived. The small things keep me very happy.......ooooh, for a game of frisbee!!! 😀
👍👍👍
Who ate all the pies!! 😂
Ugh, I loathe the tippy tappy too.......and was caught out by the loos in Regent's Park.......!
I agree, January has too many Christmas + winter clothes sales. February or March would be better

@@judimantos904 oh, good thinking xx
Vivi sorry to hear your freezer is on the brink…you can’t catch a break. One consolation is you can save more when you buy a kitchen units package. Also noticed in the comments about the temperature being too low in your flat for the appliances to work properly…not right Vivi. At least spring is just around the corner. Take care and try to stay warm. 🌟❤️😘
I am sooooooo happy that our temps have gone up a bit! I even took my hoodie off today. 😉 Hope you're having brighter days too. 😊
👍❤️🙏
I managed to stay under our food budget, 750€ for the month. I know it sounds crazy high, but that is breakfast, dinner and snacks for 2 adults & kids and lunch for 2 adults. I finally got my hubby on board with taking lunch to work at least every other day. Except for bills and food I spent nothing!
Hubby pays 10,1€/day for lunch at work 🤯
Yay, at least that's a start with the homemade work lunches......good on you lovely. 😊
🤗❤️❤️🌟
