Being content with what you have weather large or small is the key to happiness. Appreciating everything you have like a roof over your head, clean hot water, clothes, food, car etc is pure joy.

Totally agree with this comment! This is where our riches lie, in having gratitude for all we have, and being appreciative of having our needs covered. A warm home, food to eat, clothing, comfort, it's more than many have in this world.

Regarding your comment that some people think that budgeting means deprivation. To me, deprivation is when you have spent all of your money without thought or planning, and then you have an urgent need for something. When you budget and put money back, it gives you options. Not budgeting can lead not only to deprivation, but to desperation. Yes, sometimes it's not fun to give up something from time to time, but it's really nice when you know that you have a cushion against things that life can bring your way. Yes, that peace of mind is worth a lot.

100% agree with the value of that "peace of mind". I remember lying awake at night unable to sleep because I didn't know if I would have enough money by the end of the month to cover my expenses. Even though I still have about 15 more months left of my debt free journey, I sleep so much better now just knowing my written plan has everything covered, and all I have to do is follow the plan. I really appreciate these mid-week money chats. Gives me the encouragement and motivation to keep going.❤

Peace of mind is priceless- our extended family still make fun of us for living like we're "poor" because waiting until we actually have the money rather than using credit seems so strange to them....I think it's the opposite and you're poor if you are using credit because it means you can't afford it!

I completely agree that wealth is from financial freedom, and the stress reduction that comes with it. I also agree that it doesn't take a lot in life to find joy. The basic creature comforts that many take for granted, we appreciate. Maybe it's because we put a lot of our own blood sweat and tears into making our property into what it is today, our home.😊

I was shocked to receive a 12% increase in salary yesterday that goes into effect next month. That will really super power my debt repayment. I realize I’m very fortunate. I never imagined I’d make this amount. Great video, as always. And yes, my spending is staying the same. And once I’m debt free later this year, I’ll stuff savings, and then I’ll add more to retirement savings.

Completely agree with you on the peace of mind. I used to be in debt for years because of being a shopaholic. 5 Years ago I turned everything upside down because I just couldn’t live like that anymore and couldn’t sleep because of the debt. Now I have paid off all the debt and have a good amount of money in my savings account. I live on social security so I don’t have much money coming in every month but I found that I don’t need all that much. I just have to follow my budget and still can save a bit of money every month.

Nice video today. You encourage all of us. I have been debt free and on a very tight budget for 30+ years, and I know where each and every cent goes.( I am still working on my mortgage).
I took a deep breath when you mentioned haircuts. Even though I budget for my haircuts and carefully schedule them, I STILL have a moment when I schedule my haircuts, due to flashbacks to when I had more month than money. No telling why haircuts are my trigger.😊.
I love Ramsey, as well. The entire Ramsey team is so encouraging.
Why do I STILL have a mortgage?? Great question- my family got hit by a drunk driver who had no insurance and I had to refinance and start from zero at that point. I am so delighted that we all LIVED that I am grateful to God each and every time I make a mortgage payment. It will be paid off in about three years, so it will still happen- just not according to my plan.
All of this to say that even if your financial plans change, you can still prevail..in good time..
    Thanks for your terrific videos.

I made double and triple mortgage payments until I could pay it off in one fell swoop - two years before retiring.
Then took a look at my projected pension income, and adjusted my automatic deductions to roll all but that amount into savings (Roth, Traditional 401k, HSA, regular savings). I wanted to be sure I was content with that budget and I always had the option to change it up. It's worked out well, and greatly reduced stress. Before and after retirement.

I just love them all and could relate to most of them (aside from the grocery vids😂) . I am guilty of not having a written budget as childrearing and tedious work take up my energy most days, but we somehow manage to meet our savings goals all because of you, and a handful of finance youtubers who encourage me to live simply (but not too cheaply at the cost of my principles 😊). Great reminders to stay the course with budgeting. We’ve found getting our budget pinned down took some time before we were accurately predicting 99% of our expenses for a given month or pay period. But because we’ve been budgeting we’re more aware of where every dollar goes and better able to anticipate those expenses that used to sneak up on us. All that to say to others, if you are new to budgeting don’t beat yourself up if you don’t get it right immediately. It’s a skill that is refined over time with consistent effort. And it is worth that effort.
I really enjoy your practical advice on this channel.

I love that you focus on the positive aspects of being on a budget. A glass half full approach is a very happy way to live so it’s not about what you can’t buy, it’s about what you can buy. I also like the game of making things fit into my budget. It’s fun when you find a great sale on a certain cut of meat at the supermarket and try a new recipe with it. It’s fun to see that you came in under budget on your discretionary spending and celebrating a bit. Exercised self control promotes confidence in our ability to cope with anything.

A very big yes to peace of mind. i was watching a news report about UK families yesterday. The figures suggested around 5 million UK families live with a "negative budget", which wasn't just in the red by a few £s each month, but by several hundreds. An example was a family with one daughter with a medical condition, finding themselves over £460 down a month after just basic costs were taken out. Also, that families would need to work a minimum of an additional 19 hours to get out of the negative budgeting situation. Many more don't have savings. Obviously I cannot comment on their historical situation, but it is often the case that many get trapped in a cycle of poverty, they don't simply overspend. Very very difficult for so many.

Hello Mike and Jane! This video just hit the nail on the head. We have sinking funds going now and boy has it made the difference. The credit union sent me a bill for $934 which is the shortfall in our escrow at the bank for taxes and insurance. I paid that off right away with savings I had. We are also taking our vehicle to Honda on Friday for some maintenance that will cost around $300 but no problem. That money is reserved in our sinking fund. I have learned so much from your channel and I thank you. We were doing ok but I just realized we could do better. By the way Jane your hair looks lovely down.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I've been watching some of your older videos. They are quite inspiring. I've already been able to cut down my hours at a toxic job because I'm good with my money. Need to work minimum amount of hours to retain benefits including heath insurance. Health is not allowing me to change jobs or pick up an additional one. You look totally different with your hair down. It's beautiful

I think i was frugal from the day i was born i have never been in debt i have never had a credit card and it would scare the life out of me not being in control . I am 50 this year and unless i have some sort of mid life crisis and throw caution to the wind i will continue this way .. my 3 teenage daughters aged 19 18 an 16 r totally the opposite so i obviously failed to instill it in them 😣 but i still have time to turn it around. Live you i am very happy i love learning new hints and tips that you and mike have put in place. I personally believe u r living the dream px

For those people who say, "I could never live on a tight budget, and besides, I'm too deep in debt. It will hardly make a dent to live so frugally," my response is simple. You can live on far less than you think. As far as being deep in debt, the time is going to pass anyway, whether you make an attempt to pay down your debts or you don't. At the end of 2024, you could be that much closer to being debt free -- or you could let the financial current sweep you into even deeper debt. It's your choice.

Hi Jane. I have a question for you. What subject(s) did you teach in High School? In the US teachers usually teach a specific subject. Also, my husband and I feel the same way about wealth. True wealth is peace, security, good home cooked meals, loved ones, a safe place to sleep and running water.

Thank you very much for another inspiring and encouraging video. I find all the tips very helpful and simply do it( with some personal twist). I wonder if it's handy to have more bank-accounts, e.g. an extra for long term savings (for a car), or different "pots" in one saving account. Can it be helpful to "block" saved money by putting them on a special bank account that is "closed" for a year? Simply does any form of banking encourage/discourage saving spirit... At least that's my personal dilemma.

I'm curious, were you and ypur husband always like minded about saving $ and sticking to a budget? It took us a few years, and pretty good debt to both be on the same page moneywise. We are now older and totally debt free (thank you, Dave Ramsey). Wish we had learned sooner.
