Sexual abuse of child should not be referred to as a "relationship "
Chris Dawson's student was coerced and manipulated from a young age. She is also a victim along with Lyn and her daughters who have spent their lives believing that their mother abandoned them 😪
Thank you for saying this! I had a “relationship” with my 45 year old boss when I was 16, we would be alone at work together all day then I would babysit his kids too, that’s how it started. I was living on my own, poor and very lonely and unsupported so I guess I was an easy target. Now I realise I’m not a bad person I was taken advantage of.

@@olasmith8132 thank you so much for your kindness, I have beaten myself up over it for years. I haven’t lived in the same country that it happened in for almost 30 years as I get traumatised going back to the town it happened. He’s a very rich and powerful man and is often in the news. I had a good therapist who told me people like him can easily spot troubled and vulnerable people to take advantage of.

Were they able to find any more evidence this time around? What bothered me was Dr. Grande didn't say that, so I don't know what was different now and why they couldn't get him before.
@reversalmushroom my thoughts exactly!..I don't believe there was any further information or evidence..I think that the interest and attention that the podcast created prompted a charge which led to the subsequent conviction based on the same facts..it's bizarre ..if there was enough..why not charge before?🤔

What Dr G said at the end is completely right. I know that now. I was with my husband over 19 years married almost 16. I realise now that he started his behaviour about a year into the relationship and just got worse and worse. He told me it was my fault, whatever happened, had numerous affairs I found out later. The final straw was finding out about a 2yr affair. He convinced me to try once more, but his behaviour got violent towards me. I just took the children and left one day because I knew the next episode was probably going to end up with me getting a punch or worse. It was the best decision of my life.

While I think cheating on his wife with a highschool girl is pretty awful. I think there's still a big difference between that and murdering someone. I do of course agree that she should have left and of course in this case he was doing more then the aforementioned.

Do you believe moving a teenager into the home, the marital bed, and three-ways with your identical twin were just examples of ‘the swinging’80’s’? I just don’t think anyone… not friends and family, not police and prosecutors, not the public have given enough credit to Joann, the teen lover, for her contributions to the deadly plot and as a co-conspirator in the murder of Lynn. ‘Check the soft soil by the girls bedrooms’ (for Lynn’s body) is a DEAD GIVEAWAY that she knew if not participated in the disposal of her rival’s body. The girl was desperate for a secure landing from her troubled past. She had even more at stake than the animalistic, sex-crazed husband. He could pick another teen but when was Joann ever going to hit the ‘life lottery’…. Built and paid for… to escape her miserable teen home life. She had no qualms about committing adultery in the marital home while the wife provided her refuge. She deserves the credit due and jail time. A woman was murdered.

The guy changing his student's schedule so he could teach her just oozes sleazeball. How the hell did this teacher get away with gallivanting around town with this child for so long. The 80s were a crazy time.

He got away with it for the same reason that sexual abusers of minors got way with their crimes in churches and schools throughout the C20th. A big component was people in general not being able to recognise abuse when they saw it or heard about it. At that time there was no understanding of pedophile "grooming": "Grooming" is quite a recent development in social awareness. I am of the 1970s generation, and it was generally accepted that inevitably a single male teacher would occasionally form a relationship one of the senior girls (If "Anne of Green Gables"is any guide -- the popular classic unashamedly mentions a classmate of Anne's who is the love interest of the male teacher; as if it is perfectly acceptable!) No-one in the 70s thought that these relationships were a crime (though some might consider them immoral). if the girls were 16 years old or over, they had reached the Age of Consent, so legally, the brothers were in the clear. Fellow teachers in the 70s might secretly disapprove ( especially since they would have known that the Dawson brothers were married), but usually they would turn a blind eye, as it was considered completely inappropriate to interfere in a persons "private life" or penalise a professional for what was legal sexual behaviour carried on outside of the classroom. The NSW teachers Federation (Union) was, and is, very strong ) and the Dawson brothers would have been heavily and vigorously defended by the union against any reprimand or action initiated by the school principal or another teacher.
As for the girls' fellow students, they would not have dreamed of complaining to parents or teachers -- because they would have observed that the girls were willing participants. They may also have feared that the school authorities would penalise them for complaining, as well as punishing the "teacher's pet" girls. Fellow students may also have felt a responsibility to protect the "teacher's pet" girls from the wrath of their parents. They may also have feared a general crackdown by the principal on school freedoms as a result, affecting all students. Also, a teacher such as the Dawson brothers could fail a student in their subject and no-one could question it; and if a teacher such as Chris Dawson chose to fail a student who had complained about him; if he denied the allegations and said they were lying and got them punished or expelled who was going to be believed, the student or the teacher? if victims of even more serious sexual abuse, students who had been physically as well as emotionally abused by teachers and priests, were always disbelieved, there is every reason to think that any sexual misconduct allegation against a teacher would also be squashed.

Pedophiles have been prevalent since the dawn of community, its just heard about more due to social media and internet. Don't kid yourself, this plague has been upon humanity a long, long time, but calling it something that you would do to a pet just doesn't convey the sickness that it is.
@@a24-45 fascinating info. Now that I think of it you’re absolutely right, as justice was excluded from the private domain of the household. It is a good thing that “liberties” like this were (in modern liberal democracies at least) curtailed to protect women in their homes.
What makes this male teacher-female student dynamic so problematic is that the power is so unevenly distributed. A more careful ethical approach to analyze the actual relationships involved may have led to a better result. Young women should know they have rights and won’t be punished for speaking up.
I can remember this, being from Australia, although I was only young, but it was so so sad. I couldn't believe how horrible this man Chris was, and how slimey he was , moving in a student , to their home.
He was a true narcissist, cold, calculating and heartless. A master manipulator.

I vaguely remember it at the time as well. I was pretty young but I was a Newtown Jets supporter, and both brothers had played for them, so it caught our attention.

Interesting that you have identified the student babysitter. Due to laws in Australia, her identity is kept secret and in news reports she is referred to as JC. An illustration of how the internet is not bound by local laws.
Her name was known for years. It's only recently that they have started calling her JC because of the court case.
@@jackieblue1267 exactly, I only recently looked into this case, and news reports in Australia only 3 years ago all identify JC by her full name. A lot of these news reports can be found on UA-cam videos of ABC news, Ch7 news, Current Affair etc, all use JC's full name from about '18/'19 and earlier..
Here in Germany, media are only allowed to refer to people with first name and then the initial of their last name (except when they're celebrities or politicians). In pictures, their eyes have to be hidden. Not only for victims, but often also for perpetrators. For example the horrible Germanwings pilot was referred to as "Andreas L." and there was a black rectangular covering his eyes on pictures. It's odd to see the full name and face on the internet, then. But I still think it's right to maintain these laws here- not only to protect victims, but also take some "power" off perpetrators. Another time, for some reason our media showed the uncensored pictures of a terrorist that had killed people in Berlin with a truck. And they used a pic where he was good-looking and smiling, and I hated it. It was like some kind of advertisement for his deeds to portray him handsomely, with his full name and without covering his eyes.
@@murphychurch8251 Perhaps that makes sense for you culturally, but all criminals are not convicted. Even when they are, their sentance may be brief. Knowing the individual's name and countenance can help the public avoid this person and stay safer.

I agree he is guilty with reasonable doubts, but my deep feeling is he is guilty of 1st degree murder, premeditation seems obvious with the detail of the drink. Lynn paid the ultimate price being too in love with this guy who did not deserve such love. Joanne came after and saw more easily the dark side of this man, she was smart to leave him behind. I am satisfied he is now jailed but I am upset that he still have 40 years to enjoy his life and it's very unfair for Joanne, the children and her family. Most probably the mother passed away before knowing the truth.
Btw, nothing to do with the case, I live in Singapore and use English 24/7, however even after almost 35 years, I still struggle to understand properly English with some people, movies, UA-camrs... with you, it's a true pleasure for me to listen to you, not only your english is beautifully perfect in term of vocabulary but I understand each work like if it was French, my mother's tongue. There was a case similar to this (not ending in anyone's disappearance) @ my kids' HS. Wrestling Coach, whose wife was also a teacher @ said HS, groomed a 16 year-old girl and consummated that relationship @ a hotel during an out of state wrestling tournament. The poor wife had to face the embarrassment brought on by this affair since she worked @ the school. These predators seek out careers, hobbies that put them in direct contact with young vulnerable kids.

That joke about a tea towel is terribly distasteful. Being a victim of DA that’s a joke of downplaying the fact it’s actual abuse about a woman who was murdered and she was belittled terribly enough to think she needed him in a society that frowned upon divorce. Her being a victim is acknowledged but to joke about it is just poor judgement.

Sydney police were not only incompetent but highly corrupt in the 1980s. It went right up to the State Premier. They gave green lights for criminals to carry out crime and the police assassinated members of the public with impunity. Went on for decades.

They could not have not known about the affair, the beatings, the fact that no mother would up and leave her children, when she had so many options to stay around and deal with a cheating husband. Everything was pointing to foul play, with only one suspect, and yet they did not investigate the husband thoroughly. They let his celebrity status blind them and keep them from doing their jobs. Justice after 40 years is not called good police work. It was apparently a true crime podcaster who was instrumental in his final conviction.

I know nothing about this story, but as soon as you said the husband was a teacher, I knew the next sentence was going to have to do with him having a relationship with one of his students. So sad, that was the 1st place my mind went!
The Director of Public Prosecutions (NSW) 1994-2011 was Nicholas Cowdrey. He never wanted to prosecute any case that might be remotely difficult. The man has a lot to answer for, as well as the Minister(s) who kept him in the job. Remember, at Lyn's coronial inquest, it was recommended that charges be laid....but nothing. The DPP did nothing...ffs.

It’s clear he murdered Lyn. he got away with it for 40 years. The photos of Chris and Lym together as a couple in high school are bittersweet. At some point he realised how good looking he was, girls started throwing themselves at him and his bother, who were both rugby stars. This is when the narcissism started. The twin brothers started thinking they were not ‘mere mortals’. Ultimately the lies Chris told about Lyn after she disappeared was what the judge said had convicted him. Great analysis Dr Grande!

The narcissistic fantasies are not only absurd but also dangerous. It is amazing how he concocted such an elaborate and lethal plan in order to live his fantasy of an ideal love. In the process, he demonstrated zero empathy even to his own children, who sadly were left without their mother. Just horrible.

A Tea-Towel when wet, and twisted, and snapped like a bull whip is painful. I grew up with 4 brothers so I know. In all fairness they hit each other too. Thankfully this wasn't tolerated by my parents. They didn't hit us to teach us not to hit....we got the dreaded lectures. Lol. It also taught me to run like the wind...a hurricane wind.
Here in Brazil, using wet towels to spank wives is still a very common way to avoid having your palm print and therefore claiming not being guilty of harming them.

Some women are so DESPERATE to say that they have a man and are married that they put up with everything and anything just to keep a man. Chris made it known by his actions (physical abuse, verbal abuse, and cheating) that he did not value or care about his wife. He moved his mistresses into the house not caring about his wife's feelings at all. COMPLETE DISRESPECT!!!!! The man checked out of the relationship LONG ago but there she was still holding on to him and it cost her her life. LADIES, never ever let a man tell you more than once that he does not want you and he doesn't value you. The best thing his wife could have done was grant him that divorce, move on with her life and live her best life and watch from a far as karma comes back to the both of them. Chris and his mistress (Jo-Ann) where only married eight years then separated; because she realized she got the same man as his wife did. If these type of men treat their current partners horrible their pattern will continue and they will treat the mistress terrible as well. They don't magically change their behavior because they get with a new partner and the new partner is not special they are just NEW eventually the old behaviors of the narcissist will come out again no matter who he is with so the best thing to do is just to LEAVE and find someone who respects, values, and loves you. I wish the wife had seen her own value instead of valuing and trying to cling on to her to a "man" she called her "husband."

I find it bizarre that no further information or evidence regarding this case became available..and a podcast finally prompted a charge, and conviction by the single judge...I suppose it's easier to dispose of a body somewhere like Australia than in a smaller country without the vast open spaces🤔
It really does come down to evidence or the lack of it. You can't convict someone without evidence.

The murder occurred in Sydney though. Sydney is a big city even then - probably 3 million + way back then. He'd still have to drive quite a long way with a body in the back to get to the wide open spaces to dispose of it.. Plenty of points he could have been caught along the way.. But he got away with it for 40 years. Justice caught up.

@@markdouglas9182 You coukd drive around the most crowded city on earth with a decomposing body in the boot and never worry as long as your car is street legal and you obey the road rules. Only problem would be the stench when stationery and IF a person is reported missing AND you are named as a potential suspect. Police don't pull people over and conduct a search without reason. Someone has to report a missing person first and maybe, after months of them missing, but more like 'never at all' they will actually start searching. Usually actual searches are restricted to evidence compilation stage where they are seeking to procecution and that can take forever.
Don’t appreciate the joking about tea towels. Minimizing any form of adult “ hitting or slapping “ another person for the purpose of causing pain or humiliation isn’t a joke. Given the context of this case- what Chris Dawson did and how he psychologically tortured his wife, physically assaulted her and finally killed her- the attempt at humor is particularly distasteful and inappropriate.

@@cottontails9003 I’m not sure?? What did I miss?? !! My room mate has pneumonia, so I’ve been at the hospital for the last 4 days and kind of out of the loop a little bit. She’s okay now.. Home and sleeping really good. She’s a retired, (horribly disabled) vet who was a jet engine mechanic in the Air Force, and later became an Air Traffic Controller, which led to her being sort of like an international manager. She is a true American hero, for the stuff she’s done in her lifetime, (911 black box status!) so I try really hard to take good care of her, keep her comfortable, and make her life as happy and joyful as possible! Anyway, my lovely girl.. What did I miss?! How is that precious baby doing? (Are daddies nipples raw? LMAO!! People don’t understand!). I miss you, my darling little Cotton Tails! I wish I could come over and spend the day with you.. We could talk shit about people we don’t know, clean the house a little bit, play with the baby, go waste money at the Dollar Tree on things we don’t need, stay up all night talking, and waste the entire day “napping” and getting nothing done! Sadly, I think society’s views at the time played a part in Lyn’s attitude towards the situation with Chris. It’s possible that she tried to make it work because domestic violence was shameful, women leaving marriages at the time was still taboo and there was no financial support if she did so. Devastating to think she paid the ultimate price for her decision.

As an almost absolute rule a stranger has no motive to go to the extraordinary effort it takes to hide or destroy a body of someone he has just killed. A husband or someone involved with that person has every reason to do so.

Yes indeed. I dont know if Teatowel Flicking is just an Australian thing. Can non-Australians visualise this move, do they understand that this was quite a nasty thing that Chris D did? it's on the same level of pinching and twisting someone's flesh; and Chris D. actually did it in front of witnesses -- no doubt laughing, and saying that Lyn couldn't take a joke. Like you said, sadistic, because if the whip end touched you, it was indeed like a whip. It stung badly, especially if it hit bare skin.
As an Aussie of a similar age to Lyn Dawson, as a kid I was taught the teatowel flick in the kitchen (by my dad I think) as a fun move, and i daresay i could still execute it today. The teatowel makes a cracking sound like a whip when you do it right. Of course we were only allowed to do it just out of range if we aimed it at a person, we could only aim low and we were not allowed to let the teatowel connect with the person targeted. We would have got into huge trouble if we had - especially if we targeted an unsuspecting victim. We kids practised the move against the kitchen cupboards so we could fine tune how close we could flick without actually making contact, and when parents weren't around we would have flicking "wars" where we learned to pull back out of range of an opponent's teatowel in the nick of time. do modern Aussie parents teach this to their kids these days though? not sure.

I'm another Australian celebrating the outcome of this judge only trial. Also a resident of the Northern Beaches, Forest High School where Dawson's twin brother was a teacher is only 5 minutes away, with Cromer High School about 10 minutes away where Chris Dawson was a teacher - on the way to Bayview. This is a large area of dense bushland, it has a natural creek so the bush and undergrowth is lush, very overgrown with gumtrees, palms, bushes and vines, it's still as it was in the 50's - a policeman old me in the 70's it was the perfect place to conceal a body and would bet there's plenty there! One thing you didn't mention - Lyn D had commissioned from a local artist a drawing of her daughters, when the artist rang to say it was ready, CD told her she'd left and wouldn't be needing it.. when asked if he wanted them, the answer was NO! Thanks from Australia this case has been amazing in Australia how it went from weird rumour to podcast, to national conversation to murder trial which ended in a conviction after a detour via the highest court because he said that the podcast prevented him from getting a fair trial. Quite the opposite I say, the podcast was the one thing that finally led to him getting a fair trial, which ultimately led to him being convicted.

awesome though the way they described how he hit her with the teatowel was like he snapped or belted it across her back, it sounded really painful and they went on to describe that Lyn then proceeded to try and hide that she was crying from the witness, that particular description has stayed with me since I listened to TP :(

I have followed this case for years and listened to the the Podcast "The Teacher's Pet" which is very well done. I was ecstatic to see that he was finally found guilty. He is guilty for sure. I hope he does not win any appeals. Those poor kids were told she left them and nothing could be further from the truth. It's too bad it took 40 years for him to be found guilty.

Hello Dr. Grande. I usually love your dry humour, but in this case I feel I must protest. I was in a marriage and suffered IPV as a result thereof for 5 years. I can tell you on good authority and from personal experience that a wet dishcloth, when wielded as a ‘whip’ is extremely painful, so, sadly, on this occasion I feel I need to point out that the ‘tea towel/cheesecloth reference is in poor taste. Have you done an analysis of the cases of Gable Tostee, another Australian case where he was an accused murderer following a (one night stand) and his girlfriends fall from a 14th floor? Also, there's the case of Lloyd Rayney, acquitted of murdering his wife, Corryn Rayney? Both very intriguing cases.
