the ss 1le auto would probably beat this black ghost or tie it. 4.8secs to 60 is slow for an 800 plus hp. but i understand, too much wheel spin. it's like 80% of the weight is in the front and there's not enough weight transfer when accelerating to give the rear tires grip.

The Challenger is a modern muscle car trying to become a sledge hammer while the GT500 is now a modern sports car trying to become a scalpel. Both beautiful rides but there was always going to be one clear winner here, the GT500.
@@mattheishman8435 On a drag strip with a prepped track and everything set for the best launch a vehicle can get, the GT500 would still win. I really have to hand it to Dodge. It's very impressive how they manage to make so many variations of the same car without making a single good one. They are like the anti-porsche.
@@fifteen8850 “Drivers cars”?! Are you actually being for real? Explain to me what exact qualities any iteration of the supercharged Dodge cars have that makes them drivers cars? Or maybe the increasingly cringey names they give each new limited release? Limited of course only to the number they can sell people
The Challenger remains as it always has...an overweight, clumsy pig for all the HP it supposedly makes. I mean, 5 or 6 BUS-LENGTHS that Mopar pig was gapped by! The GT500 embarrasses MANY supercars that cost magnitudes more than it does...in drags (where it is limited by traction) , on tracks, and from rolls. I've owned both and there's simply ZERO comparison. The Cobra is an absolute f'n beast. The GT500 doubles duty as a "musclecar" pretty well....but it truly is a track beast, complete with amazing handling, grip, acceleration and the rest of it. The Dodges are relics, since they ARE built on a Mercedes E-class chassis from 2005 and for what you pay, have pretty embarrassing interiors and a rearview camera that looks like it was sourced from a 2002 parts bin. But...as we've all seen, the Mopars perform flawlessly in parking lots in the inner cities while liquifying tires as they do donuts, while lizzos twerk on the hood
I rented a GT500 same as the one in the video while on vacation in Orlando last year. The owner had fit a smaller charger pulley and exhaust to take it to 900hp and wow was it the best car I've ever driven and I've tried a lot of different cars.
The GT500 is an amazing Mustang. Imo.This is the best overall Mustang ever built. The 5.2 Predator and the DCT Is an outstanding combination in a Mustang that can handle both a dragstrip or a road course.
I don't think yall understand and, fastest factory ice cars are rear wheel driven, awd drive is good for a launch but gives diminishing returns on the top end whilst it would also make the car heavier.
No surprise on the U-turn and acceleration out of the turn what shocked me is how the 500 walked the Black Ghost on the straight drag section, even when the Ghost got the jump the 500 instantly reeled it in and passed it. Ford had the total package with this 500.
The challenger didn’t get any jumps. It was spinning the entire time. The Gt500 can’t reel in the challenger at all. The challenger smokes it at the drag strip
@@mattheishman8435then explain to me the 135mph it did at the end while the GT500 was clocking 143mph. That’s straight up walking the challenger. You really think it was spinning the whole time? Delusional!
The carbon fiber track package has more down force because of the front side splitter wickers and a high mounted wing, this causes more drag on the car (any car) and making its top speed less than the slipper standard GT500. On a road racecourse the carbon fiber track package GT500 has the advantage of making faster lap times because it has more downforce to help it stick to the track in turns. This applies to any car that has an option to have more aero. The more drag on a body is going to mean a slower top end speed but better lap times on a road course with a lot of turns. Standard GT500 for Top Speed runs (Drag racing) and Carbon Fiber Track Pack GT500 for road course racing.
The GT500 runs Cup2s, 180 Treadwear track tires that are 10mm wider than the Challys near allseason Pzeros. I'd love to see both on the same tire. But Aero, weight and gearing all are in favor of the stang.
Neither car have good aero just so you both know. I'd actually say the gt500 has worse aero because of all the sharp edges and crazy front end compared to the yacht on wheels
Not really. Demon could do better or worse. The launch would be better but the cornering performance would be worse. I am a Mopar fan, but ik this track heavily favor's the Camaro/Mustang platform. All 3 are beautiful beasts
Gotta give Chrysler props for the Hellcat thang but they're just not great vehicles - too old and too little development to effectively use all that power.
@tregaming07 that would be interesting to see the demon race it. The launch should be awesome on the Demon ( even though it's not prepped) . The demon has more power to improve the power to weight ratio. Although the brakes on the demon and corning is probably horrible. Would like to watch.
@@tregaming07 Yeah the track favors cars that can actually make turns, Mopar doesn’t make vehicles like that. One trick pony with 1/4 mile blast. A demon would do horrible on this none prep surface. Is what it is.
I am always amazed how people who review any form of auto Hellcats launch them wrong. You start in second gear. Unprepped surface I get 11.5 to 11.7 (125-128) every time with my 2016. I am a total novice at drag racing but am astonished by auto journalists who haven't figured this out.
During that second race though even after it was completely hooked up the GT500 still wizzed passed it. And from ready on the hellcat forums it seems most people get around 4.5 seconds to 60. They got 4.8 seconds here but this runway looks pretty dusty but that affects both cars
@@yupyup4209 The GT500 is a monster. I just cant see it pulling on a ghost like that driving a standard Hellcat for 7 years. I do run 305s opposed to the stock 275s
The 500 has proved once again that it is the reigning King of American Muscle. It is very good in every performance venue: Street, Strip, Roll, and Track. While the Challenger RE, Ghost, etc, etc, is a very capable car on a prepped drag strip with a proper drag pack, it isn't very competitive anywhere else.
For a car the Chrysler says should be firmly in the 10s, it seems hard to actually get them there outside a prepped track. Still a great looking throwback car, but I suspect the 392 provides much of the muscle car look, sound and feel for a fraction of the dollars. The T/A and shaker cars are very nice!
800hp and 12+ sec on the 1/4 doens't go in the same sentence. There is definitely a problem with that Challenger. A heavier Hemi 426hp '69 Road Runner does exactly that 12.6 on the strip at 140mph...
A prepped track is why they all cry the excuse... let's see them at the drag strip. Well, I bet 90% of the people here don't live at or near a track. Put these same two cars in real world road conditions and the outcome will always be the same, Dodge boys crying with excuses because a GT500 humiliates their Holy Grail cars.
Already knew the result before watching the video, that slow brick will never take a corner, meanwhile the GT500 is a great all-around drag, roll, racetrack car package all together. Not to mention GT500 is 47hp less and 82 torque away than the Black Ghost yet still walked the living life out of it Now watch the Mopar fanboys dragging out their more expensive Demon/Demon 170 trying to defend the Black Ghost after it lost to GT500 😂🤣🤣🤣
Okay, okay, I'm subscribing! Just yesterday, I posted that I wished you'd U-Drag Race your GT500 vs a Redeye (or variant) and boom, you guys delivered! I too wasn't surprised at the winner, but I was surprised at how hard the GT500 pulls on the more powerful (on paper) Hellcat. While the race against the Z06 was quite interesting, THIS was the apples to apples "street cred" race people were waiting for. Much appreciated and enjoyed!
@10.07 " Video Data Thingy" I noticed as soon as it hit 2nd gear (Black Ghost) it bogged right down, almost like CPU pulled out the timing reducing power. . . .maybe detonation ? or heat soak? wondering if the "Black Ghost" had the correct octane ? Something seems off. . .. The Black Ghost should of reeled him in due to GT hooking up and getting ahead to mid-range of straight away. How many miles on the Black ghost?

I think the fact that the GT500 also has the aero of a track car while the Black Ghost has the aero of a small house was probably a significant factor even after hookup.
@@billrusinko7294 I'm not so sure about that - the various Hellcat iterations over the years have been known to spin their wheels well over 100mph if you really boot it. It wouldn't surprise me if, especially on unprepped concrete, a reliably poor surface for traction, that the Black Ghost was spinning and/or cutting power all the way through the 1/4mile, even on the 2nd race. It would also mean that the "roll" doesn't actually meaningfully solve the traction issue for the Challenger bc whatever speeds it was pulling out of that u-turn wouldn't have been nearly enough to actually let it put the power down
Dodge did'nt change the heavy car structure in 20 years ( lack of money ).... Its a car you want to show off and make noise.... The Shelby is a complete sports car
@@voodoodiecastexactly. I'm just sick of Dodge blow hards always saying the Demon is the best. It's great on the strip with a prepped surface etc. but in real world testing it's a huge fail.
They can put the biggest baddest engine in the challenger, but its still a challenger. These things weigh more than a 1/2 ton pickup from the 90s. They are meant to be a street car not a race car.
I’m mopar to T and I knew for a fact that the black ghost was gonna get smoked for sure as always . Dodge had more than enough time over these few years to come up with ways to shed that weight and to also put that power down properly .
Would love to see a U-Drag with the Shelby against a ZL1 1LE!!!!!! Maybe, also a gauge that shows gas/brake pedal input. Thanks for the awesome content. ❤️🤓
I second that. It'd be nice to see the going out production ZL1 1LE against the best of what Shelby has to offer. Should be surprisingly close between those two.
@@camonly849 That would be most likely. The GT500 is an all around beast of a car, as is the ZL1, but the GT500 would end up being the victor simply due to the power it can put down. The cornering and braking are excellent on the ZL1 but won't be enough to balance the acceleration and top end of the GT500. Would still be fun to watch, would probably be a closer race than against the Challenger Black Ghost.
What i noticed was that the GT500 Ford is $30,000 LESS Money and beats the Challenger....I'm always looking for what is the Cost of Speed and HP... I guess the GT500 wins that argument as well!
They practically try to give them away to people. 50% of them end up drifting around in a circle with no doors...in a game where I still have not figured out how you win.
Look into those sales for real, 20% of Dodge products wear sold at flat rate to police officials, they are now losing those sales with the intercepter being added back on to the Explorer.
@deansmoker4853 that's not true...down south they use Tahoes and Explorers up north they use explorers for 4wd but also use chargers because they were getting awd r/t...dodge can't count fleet sales because the cops don't buy challengers so your comment doesn't make sense...the challenger outsells the mustang and camaro period
Dodge realizes on hyped-up advertisement to sale with antique formulas...put a big ass motor in it with big ass HP, no tech at all. For 55 years the Challenger has looked the same.
I just want to say that the interchiller was the best piece of equipment they ever made and built for a muscle car you can use your AC to cool your supercharger with a flip of a switch it is the best thing they ever made
As a Mopar fan, and Challenger owner - I knew the result before watching. The GT500 is a beast with stickier rubber, better brakes, better aero, a greater rpm band - making its power longer.... and its considerably lighter. All said I still don't want one. Challengers offer a certain kind of magic that makes them possibly the world's best cruising, burnout and highway car. They eat up miles and only return smiles. However, I'd love to see both cars on the same tire to see if the couch-car could close the gap. PZeros are not the best choice for 800hp and 4500lb regardless of width. They're an allseason compared to the Pilot Cup2.
You said nothing no different than what a GT500 can do, plus GT500's don't need to go through an hour of prep-time putting on its ballet slippers, finding the right key and making sure its milk formula is right octan before a race. 🤣🤣🤣
challenger is old and ugly, time for a new car dodge, all thyve done in the last 20 years is try to shove a bigger engine in everything, move on design team, move on
Contrary to American car logic, sometimes neglecting every other aspect of a car to squeeze more power out of the engine leaves you with a worse car. Crazy I know…
Hemi will always lose to a actual racing built module engine. Ppl think hemi is the best because of dragster engines but the part they dont tell you is that those hemis are 500 cubic inches fully built and can only last 1 race. Example if Ford used a coyote based dragster engine with the same 500 cubic inch that dodge uses and not the 300+ cubic inch hemi than you wouldnt even see a hemi win! Its why when these engines are in actual production cars with similar engine size even tho dodge still needs a 1-1.5l more they still lose. This is basically a demon right here and will still lose to a gt500. What else can we say hemi sucks.
As a challenger owner, what they really need is a good traction control system. The car is pretty analog and driver focused and thats both good and bad. Its old school, but you could tell that dodge really needs to hire more geeky computer guys to program a good traction control system.
Dodge sold more Challengers than Ford sold Mustangs in 2022... And the Mustang sold VERY well (not for anything, it's a great car). Be real, Dodge isn't committing suicide by discontinuing their best selling cars (including the Charger), Peugeot did it, and it's a terrible idea, aside from Jeep and Ram, Chrysler will be dead in less than 2 years.
@@cali2468 I believe the Charger/Challenger lineup offers good style, value, model choice spectrum. The top models like this are definitely distinct still even if riding on a 15 year old platform and while have many features that people expect, arent so laden that it changes the ethos of what this vehicle was designed to be. Dont get me wrong, I'd take a GT500 6 out of 7 days a week, but for many the Dodge is still an iconic vehicle that isnt ashamed to be a relatively simple hotrod.
@@PetrolheadAEHGI’m not bashing dodge but i’m throwing my dealership insight in. Dodge will finance anybody and everybody because they go through different banks allowing 17% interest rates while ford won’t finance you unless you have a good credit history with actual income to back it up. This could possibly be why they sold 8 thousand more units than ford did in 22? In 2019 mustangs outsold challengers by over 20 thousand units which was before dodge switched their banks. This data shows that this could be a primary reason for the units selling as they did in 22.
The PZero tires on the Challenger are horrible...There's no way you can truly put the 800 hp on the pavement with them (personal experience)....I'd love to see this race with better gripping/stickier tires on the Dodge....The drag portion of the race should be a little different at least.
Great video! Tons of fun to watch. Always lots of fun comments about "apples to apples". Given some of the comments, I would like to say for context, that Ford invented the pony car category with the mustang; the cars created to compete with it's immediate market success were the Camaro, Challenger, Barracuda and Firebird. Today, the Camaro is still the most direct competitor (the ZL1 in this case), the Challenger now trends more towards a "muscle car" like the Charger but is a great comparison as one of the two remaining original pony car competitors. The BMW M8 Competition is actually a great GT500 competitor as well as someone mentioned. The Corvette was a sports car. The car that competed with the Vette was the Thunderbird. Not the Mustang. The TBird has not been around for a while, so the Vette has essentially been on it's own and morphing into this weird, sub-super sports car category and making tons of money. It does not compete with the Ford GT. Not at all. The GT is now a million dollar exclusive, road homologated race-car. It is a very very different buyer and market. The T-Bird name was recently trademarked by Ford however....future ZORA owners beware :) I still don't consider the Vette (or 500) a supercar despite performance. Even the Viper is not there. They are super-sports cars, but not real super cars. I think the new GT500 gets compared to everything since Ford created a car that was both a Pony Car, and pseudo Sports Car with Muscle Car traits. The two cars, are completely different in purpose. The MSRPs indicate this, with the Vette costing >50-grand more fully loaded than the fully loaded GT500. I have yet to see the two go head to head where the Z06 was on the same (non-Race compound) tires on a track as the Shelby. Thanks for the video!
12.6 for the Dodge is due to tire and/or driver. But there is no excuse for the 123 mph trap speed . 707hp hellcat's trap that heatsoaked in the summer.

Yea the gt 350 a better deal for the money ! 350 r hands down better!
That GT500 has some crazy top-end. Just think if it had all-wheel drive.
Then the top end and handling would suffer...

Well the 10 speed trans does help vs the 8 speed lol
The challenger didn’t get any jumps. It was spinning the entire time. The Gt500 can’t reel in the challenger at all. The challenger smokes it at the drag strip

My favorite part of these is just the inside camera and listening. Love these races.
Crazy because the the shelby thats shown is the base shelby and not the one with the optional carbon fiber track package!
Power to weight ratio, gearing, aerodynamics and grip. These all play into it.
Ehhh no, that mustang frontal area is obviously more aerodynamic
This is the perfect example what the Shelby GT500 would do to a Dodge Demon on this track.
Not really. Demon could do better or worse. The launch would be better but the cornering performance would be worse. I am a Mopar fan, but ik this track heavily favor's the Camaro/Mustang platform. All 3 are beautiful beasts
that's crazy, I never thought a Shelby would beat a Challenger Black Ghost, does horsepower even exist anymore lol?
Gotta give Chrysler props for the Hellcat thang but they're just not great vehicles - too old and too little development to effectively use all that power.
@tregaming07 that would be interesting to see the demon race it. The launch should be awesome on the Demon ( even though it's not prepped) . The demon has more power to improve the power to weight ratio. Although the brakes on the demon and corning is probably horrible. Would like to watch.
@@tregaming07 Yeah the track favors cars that can actually make turns, Mopar doesn’t make vehicles like that. One trick pony with 1/4 mile blast.

Can't believe they have been launching in 1st. I'll have to pay more attention and see how many are doing this.
During that second race though even after it was completely hooked up the GT500 still wizzed passed it. And from ready on the hellcat forums it seems most people get around 4.5 seconds to 60. They got 4.8 seconds here but this runway looks pretty dusty but that affects both cars

The 500 has proved once again that it is the reigning King of American Muscle. It is very good in every performance venue: Street, Strip, Roll, and Track. Your welcome @timeontarget6814, good to hear!
Well a scatpack ran a 12.1 in car and drivers testing. And here this 800hp+ challenger runs a 12.6 😅
What are you talking about? They tell you that it will be in the 10s on a prepped surface. They didn't say about anywhere esle.
I'm not so sure about that - the various Hellcat iterations over the years have been known to spin their wheels well over 100mph if you really boot it.

Wouldn't be close. Gt500s regularly trap 134-135 mph and no ZL1 in any instrumented test has bettered 125 mph. It would get decimated in this race.
The gt500 would probably win due to the power in the straights, but the zl1 would catch up in braking and cornering.

@@camonly849 That would be most likely. The GT500 is an all around beast of a car, as is the ZL1, but the GT500 would end up being the victor simply due to the power it can put down.

@@cali2468 I believe the Charger/Challenger lineup offers good style, value, model choice spectrum.

The boat could lose 100 times over and i’d still take it over the mustang. Nothing beats the aggressive look of the widebody challenger.
Widebody? That's not a widebody mate... Those are some flares from a dodge ram
God they sound great together.
Challengers are made to race the Ecoboost. That was like a semi with two trailer gap.
💀😂
