I have been listening to him for almost 10 years, sometimes without even knowing it was him - SYL - Deathklok - Death - Dark Angel- I think what sticks out to me about his style are his unique foot patterns and snare fills - listen to skeksis - ua-cam.com/video/-eaIvh6ELVg/v-deo.html - and then listen to some dark angel- you'll see the foot patterns he chooses are very Hoglan
Raymond Herrera of Fear Factory would have his shirt off, sweating his ass off doing FF beats (which he came up with!) When we saw them play with Big Gene the first time, I was blown away by how calm he was. If he'd had two other hands, he could've been knitting a sweater or something lol
He moves like that because even though it's tech death, he's making it GROOVE. That's what makes separates a great metal player from the very top guys.
@@boreal8631 I mean Pete “the feet” Sandoval is also amazing an essentially pioneered extreme metal drumming. Gene is more technical but Pete is an absolute monster and no slouch… and we love them both!!!
It's actually helping, I tried this back in my double bass drum days, it adds power to the strokes and actually balance your feet, they do not fly all over the place if that makes sense. Not for everyone though 😂
1:25 its dope to see how a musician of his caliber recovers from a mistake. Immediately picks up the beat and substitutes the part for something that will get him back on time
He still made some mistakes there tho, i think maybe Die hard Death or Hogan fans think he could've done better. It's probably been a while since he had to play Crystal Mountain anyway but hey it's not a competition or anything. He's at his peak and will probably remain there until he's 80 hahaha
@el Guapo If you look closely he does have some issues but as i said before, it's probably been a while. I play my own music somewhat different live every time so i totally get your point.
1:35 double Ride technique had been used way long before The Rev. Without disrespect to The Rev idk why people told the double ride is The Rev signature technique.
My guess is that it comes from "The making of Almost Easy" or whatever it's called where he says something like "I threw in a little double ride thing" and people somehow mistook it for being a special technique of some kind.
I don't know who the mentioned guy (Rev) is but the double ride has been widely used by a lot of drummers since 80's like the late Sean Reinert, Deen Castronovo and Gene.
Gene is world class. This vid is not a good representation of his precision though. Keep in mind he recorded his drum parts for this song 25 years ago with a band that disbanded 22 years ago. Gene likely noodled his way through this entire vid being that he has no reason to spend time perfecting it.
I noticed that too and thought am I the only one since everyone else seemed hyped about this... I know Gene is a great drummer and I own many of his cd's (Dark Angel etc.), but this performance sounded rather sloppy indeed.
Is it just me or is the use of Gene's double rides on each side a very crucial part of what makes his sound so unique?
Amazing video!!

Okay so my curiosity got the best of my and I put this video against "I Get Around" and it actually tracks lol! 🤣
My band mates wanted me to play this. I quit the band.
Ha, I made my drummer learn this, and it really transformed his playing. You should've accepted the challenge
@@silverfoot6079 it was a joke. I did practice it though. But we ended doing another song instead.

Thank you for reuploading this, it's so satisfying to watch him play. He looks so relaxed lol
I really appreciate how he has no triggers or anything; just that natural acoustic sound.
His kickdrums are obviously triggered
He is killing the speed of the double bass while wearing heavy firefighter boots! I know he likes to practice with ankle weights but holy cow.
So does Pete Sandoval and he plays twice as fast.

Such an amazing drummer!
Amazing coverage here!!!!
Crystal Mountain?! Click
Gene Hoglan making it look so easy.
Thank you Gene...
He’s amazing
Most underrated legendary drummer. He is the Steve Morse of drums!
He is no way underrated in the metal scene
Wdym underrated?? Everybody in the metal scene knows this man is a walking legend
Don't use the word "underrated" without knowing what it means...

I agree he is underrated outside of metalheads. Casual metalheads today don't even listen to Death
buen trabajo colega, un cordial saludo desde Barcelona
Awesome!
its so impressive on its own
Muy bueno así se puede apreciar mucho mejor la calidad y el talento de este magnífico músico
Fucking Gene Hoglan is way too badass

This might seem a little off-placed... but this drumming sounds to me like fusion rock played heavier.
