hey, speaking as a black man, if you don't like "martin".........you don't have to like it. i mean i hate tyler perry's madea movies and none of my family can't understand why. so you not liking martin has nothing to really do with your skin color. hell, one of my favorite shows ever is "MASH" and that show had only 1 black cast member and he fucked off very earlier in the show's legendary run. am i wrong for liking the show, even though it's obviously not geared towards me as a black person? no. it's just my taste. so fuck those guys who call you racist because you don't like "martin". you do you, vee.
Its especially weird cause he revealed it while talking about another black sitcom hes clearly a fan of (aside from urkel takeover) and has referenced Living Single positively iirc
Yeah my people dont understand why I don't like Tyler Perry shows either. Especially some of his sitcoms. And M.A.S.H is good. I still watch it. Race has never been a factor in the shows I like.
Why are we as black people required to like something or be called racists or sell outs? Sad. I dont like Martin and I'm a black woman. So much was wrong about the show
One time, I was called racist because I didn't like The Cleveland Show. Yeah. Forget the lazy writing or the bland, one-dimensional characters; it's because I'm a racist piece of shit.
I like Frasier, Seinfeld, All About U, Growing Pains, Threes company, Cheers, Who's The Boss, Married With Children, Boy Meets World, The Goldbergs and just to name a few but as soon as I say I don't like Friends some whi_te person goes crazy on me saying *"I don't know what real shows are"* I'm like did you hear about the other whi_te shows I love and like?
Have you seen Everybody Hates Chris? Criminally underrated show. Tichina Arnold, who plays Pam in Martin, played Rochelle in this show. Even if you don't like Chris Rock's comedy, the show is still one of the funniest shows I've ever seen.
I used to love that show. wasnt Terry Crews his father on the show? Good show and I love that. It was an understated comedy and not wildly eccentric like Martin.
I loved it because the energy that Martin has in his stand-up carried over perfectly plus it was just really funny. My favorite episode was, "ain't nothing going on but the rent".
I'm 31 and i grew up on martin heavily. It started when i was just a baby in 1992 and ended when i was 5 years old in 1997. I saw some of the original airings in kindergarten but i grew up with it in reruns from 1998 - 2002. By then i had seen the whole series. Huge part of my childhood.
Martin had more chemistry with Pam than he did with Gina. Also I'm glad that you like The Cosby Show I feel like people wouldn't admit to that because of....you know.
Chenee Thompson I loved the Cosby Show but I can’t watch is without feeling a deep sense of shame.....still breaks my heart that someone who I grew up watching could do such evil things
Yeah I agree the final season was hard to sit through. You could honestly see how checked out Martin was. All the backstage drama you could see really took a toll on him and the entire show.
@@earthquake15 the first half of season 5 wasn't so bad..Martin playing against USA women's basketball team lol Tommy taking everyone on that ski trip for his new job..Those episodes were funny
On top of that Carl Payne and Martin weren't getting along either and Garrett Morris who played Stan was fired while he was in the hospital while recuperating from being shot so many on the cast weren't happy about that.
“Everything about the show that worked suddenly stopped working”. PERFECT ANALYSIS. The breakdown started in Season 4, Episode 2, ironically titled “Back In Trouble Again”. Martin went too far during a bed scene and Tisha Campbell finally had enough of his harassment. Things escalated from there and it slowly killed the last two seasons of the show.
*I don't care for tyler Perry either. He's from new Orleans & I can respect his upbringing & overcoming it but lord his movies are unbearable! It's always a b l a c k woman struggling!*
@@Simeautomatic100 Curious- do you like the movie "Daddy's Little Girls"? It's one of the few Tyler Perry movies with little to no Medea in it. It's also an original movie NOT based off of any of his plays. Gabrielle Union's character wasn't a "struggling black woman"- she was an accomplished lawyer. This movie, to me, is the best from the TP movie library.
@@lworthy2518 The first "Why Did I Get Married" and "Daddy's Little Girls" were good movies. His other movies are funny to many people but the problem is the humor is dated. His Madea movies come across as preachy. It could turn people off.
"I barely watched the golden era of the show, but I did watch most of the notably awful last season and surprise...I don't like it." 😄😄 Yeah, I'm going to suggest you give this one another shot, straight through the seasons. Honestly, things slough off in quality after Gina and Martin get married in Season 3 so if you want to cut your losses after that I wouldn't be mad at it.
Yes it started to fall after they got married sadly I would say the last true episode is when they got married cause after that vid when the heat between them started
Martin was my whole childhood as a black person raised up on these shows, I ain't knocking it, I totally respect your opinion. It's funny af that he's a fan of almost every black show on the planet except for Martin LOL.
To me, when I was watching them back in the day, they weren't "black" sitcoms. They were just sitcoms. I watched them as I would have any other sitcom because to me they were just like any other. I didn't put ethnic labels on things because those were irrelevant to my enjoyment of it . The characters didn't need to "look like me" for me to like them. They just had to be entertaining and funny which they were. That was the important thing for me. Not what colour the characters happened to be.
But realistically speaking Martin was drastically different from all the other black sitcoms and it was very obnoxious and loud very in your face and over the top. I can see why some people don't like it. Race has nothing to do with it. From a writing and storyline stand point I myself as a black woman didn't like it
+William Carter He’s entitled to his opinion, you’re the one turning this into an issue by being overly sensitive. I think the exact same thing, race doesn’t factor into the shows I watch. I love Boy Meets World, That 70s Show, and Malcom in the Middle as much as any predominantly black sitcom. Excluding Martin and Family Matters because they personally annoy me. Though not on the level of Full House or Friends which has beyond cheesy writing. Watching something for the race of the characters has never made sense to me. You should watch a show because it entertains you and for no other reason. But I suppose I should get my “fragile black self” out of here too since I don’t conform to your little narrative, huh?
Hey you missing out on Martin and on his character development from season 1-4 it witnessed him growing each season into a man trying to find his way and reach his dream in the world and his ups and downs and how you can relate to him in everyday life 1. He started as a immature and insecure and was rude to people and wanted to be a big time star. 2. He dealt with the first breakups in relationships 3. He lost his job and had to go thru unemployment he almost pawned Gina's engagement ring when she offered it that moment where he looked at her face and looked at himself and said damn he had to leave and find himself again where he ended up joining a cult 4.Listening to his friends give him bad relationship advice. 5. Almost losing the woman of his dreams being immature and making it right 6. He did everything to get and make it big to live his dream on being a celebrity and finally did 7. He went through many relationship situations we go through as adults such as women making more money than the man in the relationship 8. Being poor than the other little kids. 9. It's so many moments especially when they trying so hard to not laugh and stay in character. they improv alot in that show. The lead up to Martin's proposal to Gina is one of the most iconic proposals in Television you felt it... You really should watch again from 1-4 it really kicked in the second season but give it another chance I promise you will see why it's still loved by so many til this day that we can watch it over and over again like it's new
Of course Peckerwoods will never see that because they can never see the positive side of black people they only look for the negative without looking at the true narrative. This O’fay is not qualified to speak on why he doesn’t like Martin.
It's possible to dislike the show regardless of the character arcs and story. I found the characterizations to be unappealing. I am Black, and I found them all annoying in their mannerisms, which were all kind of stereotypical portrayals. It has it's moments, but there were better shows to watch, imho...
Meh, not liking Martin doesn't make you racist or anything. People gotta chill a little, Martin is a good show, but liking or not liking it ain't a measure of whether you're racist or not. As the great Brian Zane has said, "Like what you like, Don't be a dick!".
Yeah, it's not like Martain is the only sitcom where a black guy stars. The fact they said that on a video about another Black family sitcom is ludicrous
@@cheneethompson5756 I love Martin and Gina relationship.. It feels real but at times Martin can be too over the top at times.. it takes away from the story he's trying to tell and the jokes he cooked up..
Ok I’m seeing a patter here. You didn’t see Big Momma’s House’s, and as an adult, my main gripe with Martin is all the cross dressing. It was funny as a child, but as an adult, it completely sours the show for me. And watch what you say about Tyler, Primm just got his monetization back after making jokes about him
Martin is one of those shows you had to watch during its original airing. The slang, jokes, references, tone, timbre, and style might not translate well to a man of your demographic this day and age.
Hell I know some black folks who dislike Martin. Humans have this cool thing called personal preference. Next to the Simpson's it was part of my lineup after my homework back in the day. Loved Jerome.
me too. Lacked a little bit of awareness in that area, or perhaps may have been part of what drove Martin a bit to the breaking point, having to dance to the tune Hollywood wanted to play in how Black people are portrayed.
I'm a black woman. I LIKE Martin but I don't LOVE it the way a lot of black people do. So I think we can eliminate the racist point of view. I almost never watch the reruns. It's more silly than funny.
That's the problem, I think. It's silly. My wife LOVES this show. But I don't get it. I dunno what it is, but I just find this style of humor incredibly annoying.
Martin is a HOOD sitcom. Martin is a poor brother from Detroit trying to move up in life but stuck in a 9-5 radio host job(eventually things change). Every character on the cast played into this. Bruhman from the 5th floor. Shenaynay. Tommy being the broke friend with no job, Cole being the special ed dude everybody treats normally. Pam being the hating best friend of Martin’s girl, Gina being the light skin, big forehead/head, smart and career orientated love interest who is supposed to be a lil “too good“ for Martin. Mama Payne who is the overprotective mother and thinks Martin is a much better man than in reality so she thinks Martin is too good for Gina! This show has underrated depth that most don’t see because we automatically relate to the tropes displayed on screen. All black people have one of those characters who I mentioned above in their family. The show was just so funny and relatable. Even BIG had an episode on the show! Martin was the shit!
I was going to make a comment like this but you already did it lol Hustle man,Stan,Shawn,Otis,Jerome. Tommy Davidson as Varnell Hill, David Alan Grier as Rev Ronnie love..The gay guy that calls Martin almond brown lol the later seasons still had some good episodes..Like,the Biggie episode,DMV episode, Martin didn't pay the rent episode, the episode Tommy took them on that ski trip for his new job..Martin had a lot of elements to it
Tommy had a wad of cash in quite a few episodes lol he had a job he just never said what it was lol that was the on going joke with him.. Martin and Gina spied on him one episode and tried to find out.Classic episode
I actually thought the Martin/Pam stuff was the weakest part just because of how repetitive it got. “You’re short!” “You’re ugly!” Repeat ad infinitum. Also: “I think we all have a friend who doesn’t have a job but seems to always have money.” Do we? Is this a universal thing? It seems really specific to me, and I can’t think of anyone I know like that.
Martin and Pam's interactions were the highlights of this show, I always loved it purely for that. Interested to see why you don't like this show though, can't wait to watch it, maybe I'll edit this after.
Its too eccentric and corny. The comedy is in your face and its not for everyone. The plot did feel skewed and weird with martin playing all these different characters when the plot seemed based in reality so it felt like A martin tv comedy special instead of a solid show with each cast member being a focal point. Gina and Pam become focal points with Pam getting her own episode during the lawsuit crap in real life. Martin and gina may have been fucking in real life but their couple did not feel organically meant for each other and have chemistry. Black people eat it up cause its fed to them. I'm black and watched it objectively. He had more dialogue chemistry with Pam than Gina and a woman like Gina would never settle for Martin in real life let alone allow him to treat her that way
@@60wwediva I think it's alright in short bursts of you're trying to watch the whole thing in one sitting it definitely starts to hurt my ears just listening to the voices.
I hate when people claim racism in meaningless arguments. He doesn't like the show, that's ok. As a person of color, it was easy for me to see who was the target audience for the show.
Either a series review or the day Martin died! I did love this show growing up (because it was over the top and ridiculous and I felt like the producers let us in on it), but you made some valid arguments. I'd like to see those arguments either get stronger or possibly change with a re-watch. Please do this, Vee!
You like what you like man. I am black, and I don't see you as any form of racist for simply having a different opinion from others. That's just ignorance.
And as a black woman I can say that's the problem with the black community. Even if a show or product is clearly only for certain tastes, they think if you don't like what everyone else likes then you're racist or being weird
@Disaster Kick Yeah that's just the old man in you talking, not one person has the power to make someone leave their community. Yes I am black and i'm not going anywhere. From your comments I really hope you are trolling instead of just a bitter old man. Also I have 4 k's in my name and its an exact reference to a Japanese video game I play if you must know. Sit yo old ass down man, you're probably anti anything that isn't black which really would make you racist.
I am black , I am woke, I’m for the black culture. So before anybody take my black card hear me out lol.....I have been saying this for YEARS everytime someone compare Prince & Martin I always debate that Prince was the better show. Fresh prince had impeccable actors, cameos, and guest stars not to mention the legendary THEME MUSIC. Everybody had jokes on fresh prince, they didn’t have to rely on Will Smith to be in every scene for a punchline like Martin does. Not to discredit Martin I have all the DVDS of the show and I think Martin was very creative due to the fact ALOT of the scenes were freestyles. You can tell they had a lot of fun on set & Martin has classic episodes. But since I grew up a Martin child and as I get older watching the reruns it’s really not that funny. I can watch Fresh prince & never get tired of it & laugh like its a brand new episode.
When I was a child I was like eh wtf is this but Sheneneh bickering with everyone along with Pam and Martin always bickering made me LOVE the show as an adult.
I watched this as a teenager in the 90s. Even at that age I could tell that the chemistry between Gina and Martin was not believable in the back of my mind. I always felt like if the show was actually real life we would find out that Martin had slept with Pam a few times. The only real chemistry on the show was how much Martin hated. Pam that much hate always leads to sex.😂
Martin is one of my all time favorite shows, but you're absolutely right about the show declining after season 3. To me, I felt like in the last two seasons their only source of humor was Cole's stupidity and Martin's cracks on Pam and it just didn't work. Cole was always stupid, but in the earlier seasons he was ditsy and didn't have much common sense. In the last two seasons they made it like he had a developmental disability. Also in the last two seasons, Martin's cracks on Pam became mean spirited in my opinion whereas before they were like two friends that just gave each other a hard time, but all in fun. Sorry to ramble on. I did enjoy your video and felt you made some valid points.
Yeah I noticed the shade on Pam got a little personal and I was surprised they let the writing happen that way. That shows me his drinking and drug problems were kicking in for sure cause early seasons wouldn't have went down like that. It should have ended at the wedding.
This is actually on point here. If Martin came out today , the sitcom style would be considered "Meme Worthy" as the Kids would say. And most of the scripts written in just to get Martin Over(like Dusty Rhodes booking himself as World Champion). And it had four story arcs over the course of the series 1.what Tommy did for work 2.The Arrested Development of Cole and how he never really grew up or got Smarter 3.Pam vs Martin 4.The Martin /Gina love story.. it's not one of those comfort food Sitcoms and in the age of Black-ISH,BlackAF, insecure, Atlanta, Girlfriends, etc. Martin is a DINOSAUR and doesn't hold up with repeat Viewings
I don't think they're calling him racist just because of Martin. But when you call yourself a "social INJUSTICE warrior", AND you don't like one of the best sitcoms ever made with a BLK cast, yeah, some ppl might call you racist.
I was definitely the demographic for this show, and I was 16 when Martin was on TV. Saying that I also didn't like it. I simply didn't like the character he was playing. He was annoying and reminded me way too much of some of the annoying friends I knew at the time. Especially one who was very fond of "playfully" bullying people to the point of making them cry.
I never bought them as a couple either. Damn, I thought I was the only one. A woman like Gina in real life wouldn’t have any interest in a guy like Martin. There was no real chemistry. I could lose my black card for this but I don’t care.
well to me pam and martin had more chemistry and really were the real couple beyond the surface . gina felt like she more of a friend while pam is what martin really wanted in the back of his mind
Yes. I always thought this too. Gina was a salary worker who worked in a high ranking office with a literal career and made more money than him. She came from a rich family but the character was carried as if she had that "Want to make it on my own" kinda stiche. She did share a place with Pam but it was obvious that was out of friendship. Pam and Gina had higher ranking jobs and education than all three men. Martin and Gina actually clash a lot in the show with their differences and his disrespect crossing the line.
I also never liked that Martin had this weird sense of entitlement and ego like he pull another Gina in a minute if she permanently left him when thats not the case. His self worth on the show was over inflated and in real life a woman like her wouldn't settle for that.
@@olgacantu4179 Yet Tisha got the show cancelled when she filed Sexual Harassment against him when it got too far. Everyone knows the tea that Martin was more into her than him and her ex husband got jealous.
*I feel like Martin suffered from what a lot of b l a c k tv shows did: Not knowing when to end & being ran to the ground! I own the complete series of Martin but even I can admit after they got married at the end of season 3 (which the show should have ended right there btw imo), the show lost the charm & appeal it had that made it successful in the 1st place & was filled with dull humor & boring/repetitive plots*
Mr. Robbins thats true and there were more heart to heart moments with Junior and Michael. Other than that, the jokes weren’t creative and things got over the top
@@cjvaye99 young people don't know about it is that what you're saying? Comment makes no sense. The movie did well and had a PLATINUM selling soundtrack.
For me, I was indifferent to the Martian show, there was stuff that made me laugh and others that made me go "nah not feeling it." And I can totally agree with some of the reasons you listed off, especially the old where he plays his mom, that took me right out. And yeah I could not by him and Gina as a couple. He had a lot more chemistry with Pam to be honest.
Thank you!!!! Martin was more than a Seinfeld clone it was a show about young black love. It emerged at a time when young black love and hip hop culture started emerging in the mainstream. I dont really care if dude likes the show, i just dont think a person who didnt even watch the show all the way through or understand the context of the show should feel comfortable making a video about it.
@@omn8612 he only made the video because people were calling him racist for not liking it. I think he was very transparent about the fact that he wasn't an authority on Martin.
I grew up with Martin, in the Martin era and don’t care for the show either. I definitely don’t like it much today. And I didn’t like it much then outside of certain episodes. And I only like it in small doses.
Martin jokes on Pam changed in the last 2 seasons and it got little too out of hand. They did have an episode where he explored his hatred for Pam as suppressed 2 attraction for her but it was quickly cleaned up. Fred and Esther never bit below the belt. It felt like despite the friendship moments they would have, Martin meant a lot of the rude shit he said to Pam in the later seasons.
I agree with you. I'm not a fan of the show Martin. I don't think Gina and Martin was a healthy relationship because they keep insulting each other, Martin always downplays Gina through his jokes.. I felt that their relationship was forced and toxic. They were better off being friends not as couples. A lot of the actors and actresses on this show are talented but the show - was like watching Mad TV in the late seasons. Martin used Eddie Murphy's being two characters/ or more.. I see Tyler Perry doing this too it can be a little too much. It takes away the purpose of the show. Like you know when you watch a show and we all know the show is a friendship show. This is probably the only show that throw too many insults against each other. I just think that Martin influenced comedy but this show Martin lost its focus. I just couldn't get into Martin. I watched Moesha, In Living Single, Family Matters, Cosby Show during the time (now I can't watch The Cosby Show after how everything same with 7th Heaven) etc.. cuz in these shows there seem to be a focus that pulls viewers back to think about the show and messages it was sending out. But I did hear that Martin Lawrence during that time was inappropriate to Tisha Campbell behind the scenes/backstage drama she filed for S.Harrasment. People forget that too.. it explains why the hostile relationship b/w Martin and Gina.
I love the Martin show and I totally agree with you in regards to how it's just a vehicle for him to do more of his standups. The entire show feels like it's just skits of him and friends doing jokes, and there's not really any contiguous plotlines. I do still love it though because they are hilarious and it was just something to sit back after a long day to watch and laugh without unnecessary plot drama.
As a part of this shows target demographic, I never liked it and I'm not a fan of Martin. I've seen every episode and I watched it because I felt like I had to not because I enjoyed it. Don't let ignorant people get under your skin. Not liking the show has nothing to do with race. The real racist are the people praising the show just because the cast is all black and for no other reason.
No, you're not a racist for not liking Martin.... you're a Communist!!! No, just kidding! You're entitled to you're own opinion. I totally understand, why you wouldn't like it. I love the show and still laugh, as if I'm seeing it for the first time! Piggybacking off of your comment...Martin was totally a vehicle for his stand up! Your missing the point of the show. It was supposed to have a sense of absurdity. Just look at the over the top characters! The last 2 seasons, is when the behind the scenes problems began. That is why the show declined and yes, you can tell by the quality and performance's. BTW, I identify as "black", so yeah, we're still here!
Facts. I cannot watch it now. Every scene looks like Gina is running away from an over bearing kiss/hug/grope. You can tell he made sure to write each episode with an unscrupulous amount of touchy, Feely. Plot is subpar. Good jokes but doesn't age well at. Dude is spot on with this review. We loved it back then in our younger age cause the options of comedy wasn't there yet..not like this. It was new and fresh.
Coming here bc it took me a while to remember who pointed out Hollywood obsession with black men in drag to me now that’s it’s a big trending topic today. It was you
I rewatched Martin full series recently and came to the conclusion it feels more like a sketch comedy show it doesn’t really have regular 3 act story structure.
Tisha Campbell’s ex husband Duane Martin was jealous of Martin, he got in Tisha’s ear and it ruined the show!!!!! He was mad because Martin and Tisha had better chemistry than he did with his own wife💁🏽♀️💁🏽♀️💁🏽♀️🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️!!!!!!!!
So did Tisha, Dwayne and Martin make a statement on that or were basing that on a rumor? Even Carl Anthony Payne, Garrett Morris and the guy who played Nipsey all said publicly that Martin was becoming difficult on the set.
Nah, Martin Lawrence and Tisha Campbell were sexually involved. She met Duane Martin and once they got serious Martin wouldn't back off and then he got hooked on drugs when he married his Gina look a like. Martin became more miserable to work with and be married to and all of it crumbled.
I'm in the target audience for Martin and grew up around it. I never liked the show. Mostly bc of how Pam was treated. I look more like Pam than Gina and believe me, growing up in the 90s being called “beady bead” was not the best time. I also just didn't think I was that funny. But I love Martin Lawrence tho. He's an all-star!
I hate the “this was not aimed at your demographic” excuse. They’re plenty of shows aimed at black people like The Boondocks and Insecure that are aimed at black people (in Insecure’s case black women) that are enjoyed by many people of all races. I enjoy Martin but by saying “only black people like this show” means that your saying the show isn’t good. A good show should be able to have a following from ALL demographics. Not just one, which Martin does have.
*I mean I like lizzie McGuire, seinfeld, even Stevens, Malcolm in the middle & home improvement & I know for sure I'm not the target audience (I'm the same color as Wesley snipes)*
Yeah, the "it wasn't made for you" crap is for people whose egos are so fragile they can't handle someone genuinely disliking something they're fond of so they need some excuse to discard them completely. It's rather pitiful.
I wish more shows were like "MARTIN" ( layd back, more improve, talent, consistency between episodes that didn't feel forced, chemistry between the cast and love interest, didn't take it self too seriously but didn't cross the snl sketch show line, you gotta understand people feel inlove with not only the characters, comedy, but the structure of the show itself I agree the last 2 seasons sucked compred to the others, you should watch the whole show before making a whole vid on the subject
I was taught by the same comedy and acting coach as Martin. The Late DC comic the Fat Doctor. He said Martin was very talented, but he tried too hard to be like his idol Eddie Murphy. The Doc spoke of the behind the scenes of the business alot and explained why Martin made the choices he made. Every TV show is a collaboration and politics contribute to all of it. Great video by the way!
Shows like Martin are based around Martin Lawrence's stand up comedy. They've done this many many times. Christopher Titus had a show based on his stand up called Titus, Bill Engvall and Jeff Foxworthy both had shows based on theirs as well. Most of the time they do this, the show really never holds up but has some hilarious parts. The latest example of thus is Marlon Wayans has a show on Netflix called Marlin.

You seen through the veil of the show that is scary when you realize they are just people and writers trying to create the illusion of reality talking and moving on a set . For a show to be great you have to believe it like when you read a book and imagine or interpret what the writer is conveying in your own personal perspective.
There was the season Martin left his job to chase his big break and failed. During the season he went heavy on the Michael Jackson jokes, as most comedies were doing at the time. What separated Martin from the other shows was the end of an episode when broken Martin was walking by himself and runs into 'Michael Jackson' who apparently was hearing all the shit. MJ distracts Martin by calling out Tito for help and when Martin looked the other way, MJ beat the shit out of him. click
I like Martin as a person and love his films but I don't like the Martin show. You can love Monique fillms and her stand up but not like the parkers (just an example cause the parkers are my favorite sitcom) its not always this or that
As a black man martin was played repeatedly in my house old when I was younger. A couple of months ago I saw it on TV and watched it. And Martin didn't age well in my eyes
I respect your opinion and also thank you for acknowledging this sick weird obsession Hollywood had with putting black men in dresses. They’re trying to take away their masculinity, humiliating them in the process
Ok. This makes sense. The biggest part of Martin is the Nostalgia for what it was like in the 90s. Martin was cracking jokes with the boys. Family Matters wasnt relatable, Fresh Prince was unrealistic, Martin felt like, "Hey that's what i see people doing IRL" Granted goinh back and watching it for the first time in 2016 I can see how you can go...... "umm I'm good" Fair. And b4 you watch anything else you gotta get to Dragonball Z! Cause Dragonball is not where you want to start your Goku experience!
"Martin felt like, "Hey that's what i see people doing IRL" -- I think this is what appealed people when watching the Martin series. Not sure if this was mentioned, but when Martin aired, there was another African American sitcom based on a DJ in urban Detroit called Rhythm & Blues (NBC). It was INSTANTLY criticized the day it aired and was pulled in less than 2 months. Came across as too formulaic and "typical" in comparison. Martin's episodic presentation was how many would see themselves in a daily environment, only slightly amped up to the Fox style of programming, and we gravitated towards it. That's also why I think that people feel that Season 4 was the start of the decline; became too far from what made the series so good.

That was in Season 5

BradLad56 omg take your fragile white tears away. People can’t express their own opinions without your fragile egotistical opinion
But realistically speaking Martin was drastically different from all the other black sitcoms and it was very obnoxious and loud very in your face and over the top. I can see why some people don't like it. Race has nothing to do with it. From a writing and storyline stand point I myself as a black woman didn't like it
A different world, living single, family matters, girlfriends, I can name so many black shows I loved but Martin isn't the best of them to me.
You really should watch again from 1-4 it really kicked in the second season but give it another chance I promise you will see why it's still loved by so many til this day that we can watch it over and over again like it's new
you can't make me read that
Of course Peckerwoods will never see that because they can never see the positive side of black people they only look for the negative without looking at the true narrative.

Yea, at the end of the day I think it just hasn’t aged as well as other black sitcoms.
Being called racist for not liking a show is one of the dumbest thing ever.

I actually thought the Martin/Pam stuff was the weakest part just because of how repetitive it got. “You’re short!” “You’re ugly!” Repeat ad infinitum.
Also: “I think we all have a friend who doesn’t have a job but seems to always have money.”
Do we?

Cole was always stupid, but in the earlier seasons he was ditsy and didn't have much common sense. In the last two seasons they made it like he had a developmental disability.
Yet he was fucking her off the show so you blind

Hey, you don't like Martin, I don't like Friends. When you said Half & Half, I was like damn I forgot about that show.
I mean he really lost me on half-and-half is funnier than Martin🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️ not only is he a Peckerwood but he’s a lame peckerwood.
Amen
Do one on the classic 90s show "Hangin' With Mr. Cooper"
Zeus um he did get comments saying he’s racist lol which is stupid
Did you like the movie “Life”? With him and Eddie Murphy? Just curious...
I loved that movie, even though everyone else hated it. Because of the comments section logic that would make me a reverse racist apparently...
Life was that shit 🤣 i love that movie
That’s one of my favorite movies
That movie is really sad yet still makes you laugh.
@@TheTenCentStory I know right? Loved that movie since I was like five even though I probably shouldn’t have been watching.
Coming here bc it took me a while to remember who pointed out Hollywood obsession with black men in drag to me now that’s it’s a big trending topic today. It was you
I saw the title and quickly pressed my phone
Same
Same.
@@liquidlightz also heard that Martin was getting abit insane and mad and slot didn't want to work with him
Nah, Martin Lawrence and Tisha Campbell were sexually involved. She met Duane Martin and once they got serious Martin wouldn't back off and then he got hooked on drugs when he married his Gina look a like. Martin became more miserable to work with and be married to and all of it crumbled.
Nah Martin got on some stalker shit
That's because he was busy having chemistry with Will Smith and LisaRaye McCoy's husband so I heard, lol
He's not saying only black people like this show. He's saying that this show has a targeted audience of black people, which is true.
Yeah, the "it wasn't made for you" crap is for people whose egos are so fragile they can't handle someone genuinely disliking something they're fond of so they need some excuse to discard them completely. It's rather pitiful.
I wish more shows were like "MARTIN" ( layd back, more improve, talent, consistency between episodes that didn't feel forced, chemistry between the cast and love interest, didn't take it self too seriously but didn't cross the snl sketch show line, you gotta understand people feel inlove with not only the characters, comedy, but the structure of the show itself
I agree the last 2 seasons sucked compred to the others, you should watch the whole show before making a whole vid on the subject
I fell in love with Martin Lawrence the actor after the movie life. Instant classic
Home Improvement was based off Tim Allen's stand up too
Good call I remember all those shows and being pretty eh, almost like time slot fillers
@@carybeweary7209 Same with the Cosby Show in fact I believe all of Bill Cosby yv shows are base off either something from his stand up act or from something in his real life.
Im black i didnt like it as much. the pam jokes got really annoying how many times dose he have to refer to pam as a dog or horse she was beautiful she still is but i felft the jokes were forced
People are reaching for outrage and pulling the race cards. It's obnoxious. Stop it. It's just a sitcom
If you say you don't like the Golden Girls, that's where I draw the line
I HATED GOLD GIRLS...MADE MY EYES BLEED
@Melvin Barnes 🤣🤣🤣MINES TOO
@Melvin Barnes I HATED ALL SOAP OPERAS. I RATHER HAD WENT TO SCHOOL AS CHILD THAN WATCH A SOAP OPERA.
please talk about the changing of married with children form the earlier seasons to the later seasons and it's to me one of the funniest shows out there
Tommy and Pam were the actual couple goals
Watch Bad Boys for Life. It's the highest grossing film in the franchise and of the year so far for a reason. It's good stuff.
Just watched it, and it's weird being a guy in his 30s I related more with Martin's character than I had ever before in any of the previous movies.
I found it better than 2.
@@jsc315 Means you're getting older my friend. I'm right there with you.
Its a good emotional payoff for the characters.
bay boys 1 is still my favorite movie
I don't blame you IT took me a while to like Martin I took him more rude during the season and hated him in season 2 and felt 3,4 and 5 he started to grow on me. When I was 15
I always felt like Martin was yelling at me, never cared for this show either.
I only liked Martin up until season 3, when they started making Martin louder and dumber, took away Tommy's job, and made Gina into Meg.
I was waiting for this! ...Vee nothing is wrong with your opinion to not liking the show Martin
bedwench
Just because I feel that nothing is wrong with his opinion. That makes me a bedwench okay 😂 I said what I said 😄have good day sir or ma’am
the show always struck me as a skit show they tried to turn into a sitcom.
Did he just say “I can’t be racist, I loved the Cosby Show” ? Haha jks, the Internet is ruined
“I don’t hate gay people... I had a cousin why watched Will and Grace!”
As of right now, I don't really watch the cosby show
You can easily guess why
@@cheneethompson5756 Because it's cringe as fuck?
@@AnalyticalMenace it's funny, but with what happened to bill cosby, it's now uncomfortably awkward
@@cheneethompson5756 So just forget about the amazing show that it actually was with a phenomenal cast and phenomenal guest stars. You sound dumb as hell.
You seen through the veil of the show that is scary when you realize they are just people and writers trying to create the illusion of reality talking and moving on a set . For a show to be great you have to believe it like when you read a book and imagine or interpret what the writer is conveying in your own personal perspective.
I’m black and I love your content! This vid made me subscribe!

*Ol' Marty Mar was gettin' his s_it pushed back by the king of pop on sunset boulevard lmao!*
I really doesn’t makes sense Martin is his kind of humor. It’s like loving Dave Chapelle but hating Chapelle show
Im actually one of those people. I could not sit through The Chapelle show but I really enjoy his stand-ups. 🤷🏽♀️
I like the George Lopez show but think his stand-up is awful
after many years looking back i think i may have hated the show too
*You might wanna disable the comments on this one unfortunately. They ain't goin to want to listen your OPINION but I'm hear to listen!*
I'm already seeing people that's saying they're unsubscribed, as of right now it's not much people.
Dragon ball is the beginning of the entire series. Why wouldn’t you want to start there?
Couldnt disagree more on skipping Dragon Ball to go to DBZ. That's exactly what's wrong with the fanbase, almost summarized to a T there actually.
@@TheCharlesJackson I wish I began with dragonball tbh
@@asiatichebrew right! After seeing the sequel series that all come after, it makes it difficult to go back to the lowet paced original. Same is true for Star Trek The Original Series.
Martin was for adults vee we were kids in the 90s. Family matters and fresh prince had a family oriented show
You don't have to be a certain color to like a certain show that's weird. I'm black and was in love with Dawson's Creek. But think any Tyler Perry movie is trash and recycled. But Martin is the shit lol.
I’m white. Loved Dawson’s Creek. Hate Tyler Perry. Love Martin. We should hang out.
@@IAMTHESTARMAN Did we just become best friends??
When you said you don’t like “Martin” my perception was that you didn’t have a sense of humor not a racist. But it’s clear you think too much and you don’t get the wackiness especially him playing his mom was that he looked like her. But you’re right, the show was on a decline once season 5 began.
