Of all the iconic TV dads, Carl Winslow is one of the best and my personal favorite. As a white kid, Carl was one of the earliest looks into black culture that I ever got. And I think he spoke to us white kids in a way we really needed. Given how other black men were represented in media at that time, Carl was different in the best way and showed all of us white kids that black dads were just like our dads and we're not so different. I know what you mean.. These older shows were great and actually had a moral lesson to teach every episode.. They just made you feel good.. good memories with family indeed
Crocodile Dundee as the chauffeur Gus, a jail guard in Ghostbusters, Sgt. Al Powell in Die Hard and Carl Winslow in Family Matters. The man had some amazing roles that he made his own, brought a lot of warmth and humanity to them all.
He and James Avery will always be linked in my mind as all time great TV dads who helped raise my generation. Glad he continues to get his due and recognition.
My parents had us all get together every Friday and "Family matters" was the the show that my siblings and I all looked forward to as a family. The whole TGIF programming, but that show as the highlight. I remember in 3rd grade (born in 1982) one kid brought in a "Family Matters" book and people were kissing his behind to be able to check it out also. I am really grateful to have such awesome memories, not just of the time with my family, but also of the show itself. That was good entertainment and Reginald is an icon. And he has aged really well. I am so glad to see him looking so well too.
So without Bruce Willis, we'd probably have never had the iconic Carl Winslow we know today? Bruce is such a legend, he spawned other legends just by casting them. Wishing him and his family the best 🙏
The racist cop episode was so emotional. It was the first time as a kid learning of such problems. It opened my eyes at that moment that black families have a different experience. Love this show so much.
I’ve been scrolling through the comments looking for a reference to the Key & Peele skit. Sad to say it took a while before I found one. This one, in fact.
My late husband met Jaleel White when his best friend was the mascot for the Orlando Magic. He said Jaleel was pretty full of himself. Insisted on going out in the Stuff (mascot) costume. My husband's friend tried to warn him how difficult and heavy it was but he wasn't having it. After a few minutes he could hardly move and he did admit my husband's friend was right, noting how terribly heavy and hot it was in the suit. Lol
Reginald was such a HUGE part of what made Diehard such a classic. He was the "voice of encouragement", kind of an on-camera audience member, cheering on Bruce Willis as he goes up against the odds. Aside from a memorable, but brief cameo in the second film, his character was a missing ingredient in the later films.
@@NunButIce1 just because someone is a tv dad, doesn't mean they were a great role model to the viewers though. Look at Homer Simpson. He was a horrible role model.
Despite never having met the man, he was so instrumental to my early teen years I can't even begin to express in words. I remember seeing him on quite a few other shows/movies (Ghostbusters, Turner & Hooch, I think I even remember seeing him in McGyver in a quick clip) but to me, He'll always be Carl Winslow. I've been watching the show through on Hulu again recently and I just can't imagine what my life might have been without it. Despite not having any kids of his own, I hope Reginald know what a positive influence he was on so many people in my age bracket. Even as a white kid who couldn't relate to EVERYTHING, he was a great supplemental role model to my own father. This guy is one of the real ones. And I hope he feels appreciated.
What's even more crazy is, he played the role of a cop on the show CHUCK, for one episode... And he had not only put on massive weight, but was looking really haggard. So seeing him here, years after that, looking so much better is just crazy.
I don't think he will ever read my comment, but just in case: thank you Reginald for raising all of us 90s kids and being such an iconic and important part of our lives
He considers Die Hard to be his breakout role in 1988, but he also played a cop in Ghostbusters 4 years earlier. He was actually a finalist for the role of Winston but lost out to Ernie Hudson.
He absolutely nailed the role of a great dad. I didn't have a father growing up but Carl Winslow did well to instill a lot of great and important lessons to me and millions of kids with or with a dad. Such an incredible actor. And to think Bruce Willis really put him on and the rest is history.
Can I just mention how incredible Reg looks! A genuine heart and soul has helped him stay young looking! Thanks for the memories and being the greatest TV Dad of all time!

Oh,you remember,SISTER,STSTER !!! LOL. Me too !!!! It was a good show too. Tim Reid and Jackee. Family Matters needs a reboot-PLEASE ??? Did I do THAT ???
He has aged so gracefully and seems like such a kind soul. Family Matters, Fresh Prince, Living Single & Moesha were some of my favorite shows to watch as a kid.
As a kid I was lured into watching the show by Steve Urkel’s antics; looking back, it also had a great deal of wisdom and valuable social commentary. Truly ahead of its time.
I used to think the show was literally called “Urkel”. I can see why the adult cast members would be frustrated that a child basically highjacked their show, but you have to give the viewers what they want. And when the viewers are happy, everyone is making money and the show can go on.
I remember when Steve Urkel was introduced to the cast when I was about 12 that he instantly became a favorite to people in my middle school, including me, and we couldn't get enough of him. I thought he was the most hilarious character ever.
Wow he’s lost a lot of weight, you can tell in the face. Good for him! Miss those iconic family shows of the 90’s like Family Matters, Full House, and Step by Step.

@Thorne InyoassEvery show doesn't have to be for every person.
They won't allow that, they will allow Crips and Blood, Chrisean and Blue Blues, Kardashian family and tik tok
@@VivoZzz y’all act like people still don’t watch 90s tv shows it’s a classic😂
RIP to my grandma! We use to watch this show together in the 90s. Good memories everytime I see this show!
Same bro 😢
@@morganblake6507 my grandma died this terrible year as well as my pet. Hope healing transverses us with grace.
I know what you mean.. These older shows were great and actually had a moral lesson to teach every episode.. They just made you feel good.. good memories with family indeed
Same!
Aww man. I can imagine. RIP Grandma!
This man had to be one of the best father figures on TV ever.
James Avery was also the best voice of Shredder in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon. Reginald was just a fantastic actor.
They made you feel like you were watching your own father on the screen and not a TV Dad.
@@bboyStuntZ James Avery was also The Brady’s neighbor in The Brady Bunch Movie.
All the tv dads are Fruity lol including him 😂 lol
They will forever be linked… that’s for sure 😂
He IS a dad. He basically fathered me my entire childhood! Just love him! 🥰
That's sad

@@JihadBunnydick That's life, we get through it as best as we can.
@@JihadBunnydick but it's true 😔
Give this guy some like for Crocodile Dundee and Turner and Hooch.
He was a great supporting actor in those films.
Reginald is a national treasure. There was an entire generation of kids who looked up to him like their own father!
i think Ed O'neil aka Al Bundy is pretty cool off screen too. man i loved married with children.
I liked when Reginald played Santa Clause.
Agreed
For real. Him and Uncle Phil man. 🙏
Truly loved him growing up
Wow, he still looks good. 👍
He’s HIV positive so yes he does
Looks amazing, barely aged a day
You're delusional, he looks old as hell
that was the first thing i said/noticed when I clicked!
Not having kids, that’s why lol
He seems like such a gem of a human being. You can tell a lot about the soul of somebody just by the way they talk and smile.
Thats been proven to be false lol
So without Bruce Willis, we'd probably have never had the iconic Carl Winslow we know today?
Bruce is such a legend, he spawned other legends just by casting them. Wishing him and his family the best 🙏
Carl and uncle Phill ( RIP) were the perfect father figures from my generation.
This show brought everyone together no matter social class or race. Good times..
Those kind of shows don't exist anymore sadly.
I love this show and I loved perfect strangers
@@joannajamerson35 I'd like to revisit that show. My mom and I used to do the "dance of joy" lol.
@@loswilson5331 I know right,smh…
The racist cop episode was so emotional. It was the first time as a kid learning of such problems. It opened my eyes at that moment that black families have a different experience. Love this show so much.
VelJohnson was only a TV dad not a real lift dad but a WONDERFUL TV dad who set GREAT examples.
“There is no Jaleel. It’s Steve, it’s always been Steve.”
I’ve been scrolling through the comments looking for a reference to the Key & Peele skit. Sad to say it took a while before I found one. This one, in fact.
Get out of my house STEEEVE!
Such a great TV dad!
Definitely, a great dad of the 90s on TV.
It look like he lost weight
I can't help but get ticked off with Bill Cosby every time I hear that......but that's life.....
God bless Reginald VelJohnson.
For me, he was THE BEST! 🙂
One of the best TV dad's of the 90s next to Phillip Banks
He seems like a real classy dude. The way he answered everything so well . . . seems like a nice guy.
@KBM515 Nah, he admitted that Jaleel was difficult. He was trying to pc about it.
Omg I love this guy. Nothing but warm childhood memories from him in tv 😭
Man ! Diehard was a great movie
@@hydroblast2209 for sure, one of those flicks that if you come across it you can’t help but watch it
Having him in every Die Hard movie wouldn't make sense story wise
@@kingbullyrock8739 I know because all those movies were so well thought out and intricate.. no way they could have thrown in a now friend of John’s..

His heart seems so clear. No tension. Just same energy then and same energy now. What a guy.
Lol he stayed single
Too bad some of Reginald’s goodness didn’t rub off on Jaleel.
I heard him n dad from fresh prince was lovers. Idk how true it was but they both helped raise a generation. Had authentic fatherly charisma
This man was one of my father figures growing up. I love this dude.
He wasn't just a great tv dad, he was also a great dad to millions of viewers over the years. He is definitely one of my favorite all time actors.
I think that’s what they meant when they say TV dad 😂
@@NunButIce1 just because someone is a tv dad, doesn't mean they were a great role model to the viewers though. Look at Homer Simpson. He was a horrible role model.
Wow, I guess redundancy can be…. Interesting sometimes
@Gays&Botstookover brought you here, didn't it?
Awwe, so true 🥺
Reginald is a total class act. What a great human being.
He really is a great human being. A decent nice man.
Man, I miss those good ol days. TV like that is long gone.
Wow, he has aged so well. Always loved him on screen.
I'm legit baffled. Looking at him, you would think it's only 5 years max since family matters went off the air
Black dont crack. 😂
@@BermudaEntrepreneur it's true.
What's even more crazy is, he played the role of a cop on the show CHUCK, for one episode... And he had not only put on massive weight, but was looking really haggard.
So seeing him here, years after that, looking so much better is just crazy.
It's because he didn't have kids.
He looks freaking phenomenal!!!!
What a nice interview! His voice is so different from the Family Matters dad’s way of speaking.
Can't believe how long it's been, 20+ years?
He's looking good :)
Wow black really don't crack 😳😳

Having no kids helped lol
Having melanin and good bone structure helped

I don't think he will ever read my comment, but just in case: thank you Reginald for raising all of us 90s kids and being such an iconic and important part of our lives
He considers Die Hard to be his breakout role in 1988, but he also played a cop in Ghostbusters 4 years earlier. He was actually a finalist for the role of Winston but lost out to Ernie Hudson.
To have lived through those times and watched these types of shows was a blessing in disguise. Very thankful right now 🙏🏼
Completely agree!
Yes it was
He looks so good!! He didn’t age at all 😲
This is a good guy, down to earth, genuine and humble.
I'm still watching Family Matters In 2023 hands down my favorite show growing up
He absolutely nailed the role of a great dad. I didn't have a father growing up but Carl Winslow did well to instill a lot of great and important lessons to me and millions of kids with or with a dad. Such an incredible actor. And to think Bruce Willis really put him on and the rest is history.

Carl Winslow and Uncle Phil (RIP James Avery).

Nice You look great Reginald VelJohnson.
He has aged so gracefully and seems like such a kind soul. Family Matters, Fresh Prince, Living Single & Moesha were some of my favorite shows to watch as a kid.
I love him. Such an adult response when speaking on someone who was a child during that time.
Exactly
A man glad I have him as an example
Jaleel had a lot of pressure being a star on a show that was originally not about him and was a kid at the time.
Well they treated him horribly.
turned it into a tear jerker at the end
Reginald VelJohnson is a legend, glad to see him looking healthy and vital.
As a kid I was lured into watching the show by Steve Urkel’s antics; looking back, it also had a great deal of wisdom and valuable social commentary. Truly ahead of its time.
You said it right, Brother!! :D
It was good. Hardly anything special though.
@@MoneyManHolmes fr fr because the pilot showed what the show was pose to b he came in the basically changed the show and geared it towards urkel
