HOW URKEL RUINED/SAVED FAMILY MATTERS
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 жов 2024
- Steve Urkel is a character you either love or hate... and I was firmly in the middle somewhere.
Urkel revitalized Family Matters but it became a show centered around him.
I personally preferred the show when it was about Carl and Harriette with Steve somewhere in the background or in a supporting role.
Earlier Family Matters is often forgotten in the larger spectrum of the show.
The more zany and outlandish parts of the show are what's remembered.
Urkel's shrink ray, the transformation machine, the ventriloquist dummy.

Finally someone who agrees with me!!! Myra>Laura. She was so loving to him and gorgeous BTW
At the time I don't think it would have been well received by the audience. The culmination of the Steve /Laura arc had to be Steve winning her over eventually. It's what almost every show does: Ross/Rachel, Ted/Robin, Leonard/Penny...you name it. It's formulaic for a reason, it usually works, actually Ted/Robin is the only controversial case I can remember and even that one split the audience in half.
@@anxofernandez3344 you're right. I'm looking at it in hindsight so I'm sure there audience voted for Laura
@@anxofernandez3344 But the writers should have chosen the better, more mature answer. Imagine looking back on the show, and seeing him pick Myra over Laura. How mind blown would you be that this show made the non-toxic, better choice?
Yeah. The show should had ended with Steve realizing Laura ain't worth it and began to embrace Myra.
I would have loved to have a gf like Myra.
Fuck Laura
They ruined Myra to force Laura and Urkel. A better ending would have him move on and realize Myra is his soulmate all along l.
I would like to know what happened to Stefan after Laura chose Steve to marry than him. As l remember, both Steve and Stefan proposed to Laura, but when Laura chose Steve, we never see Stefan anymore.
Myra was dying so she didn’t show up as much
@@Blackkageee Yeah...I know, that was sad. In her last season they kinda turned her into a stalker with cameras and shit all in Steve's room and had her sabotage his transformer machine. All to give him an excuse to leave her.
@@ronnellsykes5648 even early in their relationship she had signs of not being completely stable. There was one point where she was drawing naked artwork of him. I can't remember if she had been spying on him in the shower or something or just visualized in her head but Steve was understandably creeped out
@@josephclegg3562 I would want to know how Stefan became a actual person separate from Urkel.
Urkel should be a trillionaire with the stuff he invented. The US military would have paid a fortune for the patent to the 'transformation chamber'. The chamber was able to give Urkel all the skills of Bruce Lee in an instant, you could use it to train 1000's of soldiers instantly.
He invented Urkelbot and Laurabot, snooze juice, a transformation chamber, the Urkpad, a time machine, etc. I mean the list goes on.
@brandon roberts NAILED IT!!
I'd rather have Steve invent things like that instead of Sheldon Cooper. Dear God- think of the power trip Sheldon would have. [Sorry for the nightmare fuel]
More likely he would just "accidentally die" after they got it.
Man I remember when Steve invented his cloning machine and Carl was mostly and understandably unimpressed because he'd already invented his transformation chamber, a teleportation pad and a frigging time machine at that point
Urkle's parents are said throughout the serious to be abusive towards Steve outright abandoning him at times he was begrudgingly accepted by the Winslow's and became part of their family. So basically he Matters
If I could rewrite the show, it would be like this: it would start with Urkel bothering the Winslows, only for them to discover how wretched his parents are. The family decides to adopt him. Urkel struggles to find his place as a Winslow.
@@nathanseper8738 I feel like that's basically exactly what happened but it was more implied than outright said. Honestly though the show was good when it first started but Steve really was the heart of the show.
Urkel's parents were assholes!!
@@wilnerolivier7971 I'll say! They went on a trip and purposly left him behind twice! He ended up staying with The Winslows for two weeks! Another time Carl drove him to the airport because he didn't want to be stuck with him again!
@@jaymarx777 I agree that Steve really was the heart of the show. He wasn't just funny, he was an uplifting person and brought positivity to the family members themselves, always complimenting them and offering good moral judgment and advice. He helped little Ritchie defeat his bully when everyone else brushed the poor kid off. He helped get Waldo back from the army, he helped Eddie with school, he helped set Maxine up with Waldo, he is often the catalyst for character development, not just for Laura and Eddie, but Carl too. As much as he annoyed Carl he actually helped Carl a lot emotionally--like when he helped Carl realize money wasn't as important as he thinks, and when he reassured Carl in the last season that he made all the right choices and he's a respected man and father. Over the course of the series he slowly but surely softens Laura's heart and Carl's bad temper, he was by far the most impactful character tbh.

Same, in fact, I didn't even know for a long time as a kid his actual name was "Steve."
🤣
I find Urkel to be a tragic character. Nobody but Estelle and Richie liked him. His parents didn't even like him. He was constantly being rejected and sent away, so it's really no wonder he kept going after Laura. It screwed him up so much, he didn't know love when it fell in his lap. He rejected it to continue being rejected by Laura. To him, rejection was love.
I'm surprised that he didn't seek therapy to help him realize that Myra is the one for him.
This was good. You should read what I wrote. It's a different perspective, but opens peoples eyes who wouldn't have thought to see it the way me and people like me experienced Urkel.
Harriette liked him. She would often defend him when Carl said bad things about him. Waldo was friends with him. I think Rachel and Judy were also kind to him when they were on the show. I agree his relationship with his parents was tragic.

Almost makes you wonder how long the show would have lasted if Urkle only showed up once every handful of episodes at most
I'd say without Urkel it'd have lasted 3-4 seasons, maybe 5. In the mid and late 90s people weren't so interested in family shows anymore. They needed one or two hooks. For Family Matters it was Steve and Carl, for Fresh Prince of Bel Air it was Will and Carlton, who became sort of a geek himself leaving the original snobby, uptight and preppy kid behind him.

In my opinion, he saved the show from getting cancelled.
He did
Definitely. I went back and watched the first season not to long ago. It's pretty good but it isn't anything I would feel compelled to watch every week. It was just another Full House or Cosby Show it would have eventually been lost in the pack. Then they introduce Urkel and now they have the hook. It does go a bit off the rails in later seasons when it just becomes the Urkel show. But back then who cared or even noticed? More Urkel was always better right?
Exactly, without catching lightning in a bottle with the Urkel character, the show MAYBE makes it two seasons. I heard the other cast members treated Jaleel White very poorly when he became the main focus of the show, but they should’ve been thanking him for keeping their paychecks coming in and making the show one of the staples of ABC’s TGIF block
Has it been proven the show had bad ratings and on the verge of cancellation before urkel? Or is it just a myth that everyone just ASSUMES is true like Judy walking up the stairs never to be seen a again(Never Happened) or the Actress of the First Harriette Winslow returning to the show to play a different character (Again, didn't happen). I haven't seen any evidence to show that it is true.
I agree.
As someone who's a big fan of 'Family Matters' since middle school, but I'll admit: the show really did rely a little too much on Steve Urkel. But let's be honest: 'Family Matters' never would've succeed if it wasn't for him.
Also, I still love that character, but admittedly, he does have his flaws.
The main things I liked about Urkel were the comedic chemistry he had with Carl & his interactions with Myra. The other stuff was funny at first, but got old pretty quickly IMO
@@seanmcgrath3826 I agree. And it did.
They could have gave the family more plots instead of Urkel. The show started becoming more about Urkel when they bumped half of the family to making recurring appearances and made the other half secondary characters to Urkel, and in Judy's case, they axed her all together.

Can you imagine the moral of the show, the fact that at the end he got Laura... It's telling weird creepy guys all over the world that if you just keep pestering and pestering and pestering, eventually you'll get your girl

Most men that are persistent do end up being given a chance though.
The point is he stopped chasing her in season 7. He started to mature in that respect and they really were just good friends who lived together until season 9 when she started having real feelings for him. They had to meet each other half way and that only happened when they became adults. I love that they finally got together when neither one was really trying... they just naturally gravitated to each other and let it happen. They both had other viable options but still chose each other to marry, and I think that's awesome.
I'm still confused by why Steve was still thinking about Laura when he had a whole ass Myra who loved him as he is. I'm mad how he couldn't take a L with Laura. If someone is not interested in you then leave them alone.

The entire show was actually great and Urkel really appealed to some of the viewers. Hell, Jaleel White voiced Sonic The Hedgehog, SONIC THE FREAKING HEDGEHOG! Urkel made it okay to be a Black Nerd in this day & age.

@@seanmcgrath3826 IMO, Jaleel playing "Steve" did open the doors for other people of different identifications to play the nerd/geek/dweeb/dork etc. character type. Granted, it did lead to some type-casting with Asian & Indian (India) people in tv and movies in the last decade plus because... "reasons". A Neil DeGrass Tyson or Andre Black Nerd (and many others) would still exist in this timeline; it just would've taken a bit longer for the public consciousness to wrap its head around the thought of being into nerd stuff & NOT being as "white/Caucasian" as Screech (Saved by the Bell), Billy (early years Power Rangers), Leonard & Sheldon (Big Bang Theory), etc.

That's definitely a 90s thing: someone likes something, oversaturate it. Urkel, the nWo, boy bands... never knowing that too much is too much.
Should have kept Urkle in the middle of the show not make him the focus point of everything within the Show (not more or less).. The NWO should of stayed with 3 or 4 members not add a million people to it, it killed the swagger of the group.. Boy Bands started to get ridiculous among teenage girls it started to become a headache, I know cause my sister had the NSYNC, Backstreet Boys and 98 Degrees and my God it drove me crazy especially watching that damn TRL on MTV..
That’s been like that forever . You know how many westerns came out when that was popular . Hell you can see it now with superhero movies. Definitely not just a 90s thing

@@brandonpage7087 but it clearly happened in the 90s the most
It was definitely around in the 90s, but oversaturation of products or trends or celebs has been around for decades. It's certainly nothing that started in the late 20th century. It’s so true though!
Let's not forget that they wrote out Laura's little sister and the Aunt character (whose names I can not recall) just to give more time to him. They literally conveniently forgot about family members in a show that was called "Family Matters". Great family.
They wrote out Rachelle also.
It's clear that when urkel saved the show from being canceled, the writers thought they needed to go full force with the character.
I understand the whole 'Myra is better' standpoint.. but for Steve it was ALWAYS Laura, even when she was mean, dating other guys, and taking advantage of him. like shit he transformed into a completely different person for her. regardless of how she treated him, he loved her so much of course he would dump whoever he was with to get with her as soon as she showed interest. his dream came true!
His love was unfounded though cause with the way they wrote it they essentially made it so there was nothing (no matter how bad) Laura could do to make Steve stop loving her and there was nothing Myra could of done to win him over and make him see that she's completely and utterly in love with him and would do anything for him (unlike Laura) it was just bad writing imo at least.

And also, his inventions weren't a bad aspect of the show at least until the transformation chamber was introduced. I really enjoyed the robo nerd episodes as it clearly showcases how smart Steve is.
Agreed. The Transformation Chamber was the reason why the show jumped the Shark. I would say that happened because of the episode when Laura dreamt about Steve creating an Atom Bomb for her science project.
That is what eventually happened though. Steve split himself and Stefan apart but Laura ended up choosing Steve
The Stefan episodes really brought in the ratings. Everyone was dying to see what Steve/Jaleel was really like without the nerd get up and voice. For me it jumped the shark towards the 2nd to last seasons or so. It just became redundant.
@@acecashman1237 Stefan as a separate person kept Laura from falling in love with anyone else long enough for her to realize Steve had always been in her heart. They were supposed to get married, but we never seen the wedding due to the cancellation of the show.
Yeah, we got cheated out of seeing Steve & Laura's wedding, with the series being abruptly cancelled, right after Laura agreed to marry him!
Urkel may have become the star of the show, but I still smile whenever I see Reginald VelJohnson appear in anything else.
it always boggled my mind watching him ignore Myra. My god she was gorgeous
Jaleel White is one of my favorite actors.
Mine too.
One could also argue that with Steve Urkel becoming more and more apart of the show that character might have been the reason why the character of Judy Winslow was cut from the show.
People keep saying that, but that is not true. They had other characters, who got a lot of more screen time than Judy: Waldo, Lieutenant Murtaugh, Maxine, Greta, 3J... Judy just never clicked with the writers and eventually was brother chucked. But it wasn't Steve's fault.
@Alex Kanyima As long as Jaimee was a minor, it is not like they could keep the mother away without firing Jaimee. So that is what they did.
Full House introduced me to Steve Urkel and to this day I've never seen an episode of Family Matters
Was kinda the opposite for me. Steve urkels guest appearance led me to watch family matters
Myra hated when Steve started to change that’s why they broke up
I still to this day love the Steve Urkel character. I do agree with you on a lot of points. While Steve was one of the biggest reasons for the shows success, the show became more about him and less about the others it jumped the shark. I wasn't a big fan of the OGD character or when he overused the transformation chamber. Myrtle was a hit or miss for me as it was too ridiculous. I thought Jaleel White did a better job with Myrtle when he did the character the first time.
As far as Myra goes it was pretty clear that relationship wasn't going to last. Michelle Thomas (God rest her soul) was amazing in that role and while at first she was perfect for Steve, she never really matured. I always liked the chemistry between Steve and Laura. Laura was shallow, but that was to be expected since she was a teenager. Plus let's not forget that Steve was a pest and was known to stalk Laura. Eventually he matured enough that he became less awkward and Laura became less shallow.
I was sad when the show ended as abruptly as it did. We never really got a proper series finale.
I have zero problems watching The Cosby Show now; I know how to seperate the character from the actor. With that said, I agree with the Family Matters vid.
The Winslows meet The Huxtables.
I try to do that but some shows have a taint to them (especially if you know about what became of some actors and how they behaved on set or after their careers ended). I have trouble watching reruns of Father Knows Best, largely over what befell Loren Chapin (who played kid sister, Kathy). She was being sexually abused IRL and had a messy life that took decades to recover from.
Other times it's a classic case of liking something when you were little but realizing that even nostalgia can't make it enjoyable for you in adulthood.
It’s funny how always mention this about Cosby show, not same negatively goes to Stephen Collins of Seventh Heaven dad or Woody Allen or Ramen Polanski.
Cosby was railroaded in that kangaroo court.... Changed the law to convite him on those bogus charges for touching a whyte woman titties...
ann Early I really don’t want to watch 7th heaven after that too real
#teamMyra that woman was stacked and gorgeous . RIP Michelle Thomas
*BRUH I CANNOT WAIT UNTIL YOU TALK ABOUT MARTIN!!! YOU GOIN MAKE ALOT OF PPL UPSET WITH THAT ONE!! Ima hear you out tho but they have 1 particular gripe I have with the show & I wanna see if anybody caught it.........*
it was funny but i can see some flaws in it
Myra was a real one no doubt, one must always appreciate those that love you when nobody else does.
I always thought Steve should handed ended up with Myra, too. I enjoyed Family Matters because I basically was Urkel as a kid, and Urkel had someone who genuinely liked him for him. I would have killed (figuratively speaking) to have found someone like Myra. But I've realized as I've grown older that the heart wants what the heart wants. There's a girl I dated for about six months (it didn't work out) that if I had my choice between her or Cindy Crawford, I'd choose her every time, even though she really wants nothing to do with me romantically (we're still friends, though). So while Steve should have stayed with Myra who was genuinely interested in her, I understand why Steve would still choose Laura, as I've gotten older.
Been watching this series all over again on Hulu. Yes, as the series went on it became very, very silly. Still, he saved the show and made it more enjoyable till the later seasons when it became all about him and just way over the top.
edit: Also, great points on Myra. Yes, Myra actually genuinely loved Steve and she should've been the one that ended up with him.
Also, is Carl the same character as the cop in Die Hard?
It certainly makes for good head canon since Bruce Willis and the characters from Full House would be in the same universe
Just imagine- John McClain (Willis) shows up at Carl's home in Chicago. Carl is not too thrilled to see his ol' buddy on his doorstep.😁
He also appears as a jail worker in Ghostbusters.
Whoa, that would be awesome.
Let's not forget that when Urkel became Bruce Lee, he beat up Tommy Oliver.
He did what?
Yep, Urkel got to beat up the Green/White Power Ranger!
@@Josh-Man when did this happen
Fact. Jaleel white felt uncomfortable being put in women's clothes back then and was worried "what the guys would say" and Jaleel's dad went to the producers and said NO MORE and the character was cut...and so they didn't do it again until years later when Jaleel decided for himself he wanted to bring the character back and so they did.
Everyone loved Myra more than Laura, she was fine as fuck (RIP Michelle Thomas). But I ain't never hated Urkel or the Family Matters show over it. It was a great show. Steve Urkel is the man.
Did i do that????
Yes you did
*Did you notice how in later seasons, they just kept making urkel more & more clumsy?? Like it was overkill*
@@Simeautomatic100 i didn't watch much of the later seasons
Honestly, the popularity of Urkel really should have led to him getting his own spin-off show with a couple of appearances on Family Matters per season.
I agree.
ScorchipProductions True, but spin-offs are iffy.
@Maximus Prime But then you have the case of Fraiser, which succeeded with wholly new characters. I think an Urkel spin-off could've worked in an entirely new setting, with people similar/dissimilar to himself. Seeing life outside of Chicago, finding himself tested/growing, and helping the other characters grow as well.
Could you imagine for example It's like Carlton from FP was Given to be the main character instead of will 🤔actually I wouldn't mind that
I mainly watched FP for Carlton after a bit; he frequently was the funniest one on the show
Will, Carlton, and Uncle Phil was the ones pulling the show. Aunt Viv, Hilary, Ashley, and Geoffrey were the secondary characters to them.
@@josephclegg3562 Wrong, the sarcastic British butler is always the best character on any show.
Those shows should've crossed over. Would've been a watershed momemt in sitcoms.
Myra broke up with Steve then Laura noticed he started to improve himself and she started to like Steve. Steve has always loved Laura to depths that Laura didn’t understand until she got older and mature and if u really watch family matters Laura always had Steve’s back especially when they were in hs
My grandmother used to call this show "Urkel"
1st thing... I’m team Myra allll day!!! You explained that beautifully! 2nd, I really have to hear your reasoning behind not liking Martin. It is literally a top 5 show in my humble opinion (the first 4 seasons at least).
Myra was a really beautiful woman. She also had a nice bounce to her chest. 😉 Haha. But seriously. Such a sweet woman. RIP.
I disagree without Steve Urkel nobody would even remember this show.
It wasn't Jaleel's fault. If you want to blame anyone, blame the producers and writers. They decided to expand his Urkel role.
The real parallel to Family Matters, almost to an eerie degree, was Happy Days. It started as a family sitcom, then in the first season brought in a one-shot character named Fonzie. Fonzie became so popular they brought him back over and over and he eventually became the lead. People now agree that the show “jumped the shark” when it started to revolve around Fonzie’s increasingly outlandish stunts. They even dropped Richie’s brother Chuck from the cast without a word of explanation.
Kind of like how Robin williams from flubber kept giving his fiance the shaft
And not in a good way
*Myra & Steve both liked the same things & they were equals but I think the reason steve pushed myra away was because she wanted to do the "horizontal poker" with Steve SO BAD but he was scared & wasn't ready. Plus he outright told myra the second laura catches feeling for him, it's over........ so basically he strung myra along & played with her heart* 😡😡😡😡
Sim ? I agree with both. Steve was not ready for sex and Myra was too much for him. And yes he did string her away.
@@chaddouglas7779 Mara loved that kid so much you was ready to give her nerdy body to him cause she felt like he was the one.. to think about it Urkle didn't do it cause he didn't wanna break her heart, as soon as Laura told him she wanted to give him some Urkle took off up them stairs like it was his last chance at life.. It wasn't because Urkle wasn't ready, it was because his heart wasn't with Mara..
Sim?, that's true! I forgot that he told Myra that!
And that is what ultimately made Steve a jerk. If you aren't really interested in a woman you should just say it outright so she can move on with her life and not waste her time on you. I think he just liked having a hot girl (way hotter than Laura by the way) fawning over him.
@@fireriffs but Myra was just as bad too. Remember the first time Steve tried to break it off with her at the end of season four, she attacked Laura for it, and kept threatening to attack Steve and Laura's bond at the beginning of season five, and Steve felt the only way to get Myra to back off was to resume dating her.
However, Myra did show maturity in season 6's "Paradise Bluff," when she understandably requested Steve go steady with her (and stop mentioning Laura out loud when he's around her), and Steve should have just let Myra go in that episode (he actually almost did, but a near death experience clouded his judgment). I think maybe, in Steve's head, he thought he should move on, but in his heart, he did not.
Remember in a 1994 episode, where Carl dreams he slept for 15 years and has awaken in the year 2009, and Steve and Laura have 4 Urkel children and Laura gets pregnant whenever Steve kisses her? That was something...
Myra had an unhealthy obsession with Urkle.
Laura wasn't interested in Urkel because of him working for NASA. She was in love with him as Stefan Urquelle and eventually started to love him as Steve. Stefan teamed up with Myra to break up Laura and Steve but Stefan eventually accepted that Laura loved Steve and he moved on. Facts.
Vee i knew this one was coming great vid bro #TeamMyra r.i.p
Mayra was not in love with Urkel she was obsessed with him
That's okay. We were obsessed with her mammaries.
Equal opportunity obsession, it’s all cool.
Yeah, technically, Urkel was obsessed with Laura too, because all true love is an obsession. However, not all obsession is true love - case in point, Myra to Steve.
At least Steve was eventually willing to let Laura go, even though it would have hurt him, when he and Stefan proposed to Laura at the same time (and Stefan probably only proposed to Laura because he genuinely felt threatened by Steve), and Steve assumed Laura would marry Stefan. That is true love there - being willing to give up the one person you cannot live without so he or she can be happy. In contrast, Myra was never willing to let Steve go, even after he and Laura were engaged to be married and were clearly very happy together. As long as Myra could have Steve, she didn't care if Steve was truly happy or not.
Myra loved him for him and Laura didn’t and RIP to Myra
I didn't know that they ADDED Urkel to episode's that he WASN'T even in!
As a kid, I called it "the Urkel show" because I couldn't remember the name and that's what it was to me.
I like all the members of family matters. In my opinion, urkel didn't steal the show because all the members treated him like he was family. Steve liked Laura because she always gave him good advixe. Myra was pushy or forced her to merry steve. Urkel didn't feel comfortable.
👍People Only Wanted Steve To End Up With Myra Because She Was Easy & They Wish Myra Tape Them In A Locker.
Right, from the very beginning, Myra could not respect Steve's feelings for Laura. While I don't blame Myra for being disappointed that someone she is interested in has feelings for another who does not show romantic interest in return, when Steve first told Myra he cared for her deeply but was already in love with Laura, instead of Myra talking this over with Steve like a mature person, she instead tried to tell him, NO you don't love Laura, she is playing a mind game on you...
He should've been treated more like the character Barney on HIMYM steals the scene a lot but not always the main focus of the story
Would people had watched it though??
@@rxtsec1 who knows? There was no need to get rid of Judy to make room for him. They gave Waldo a bigger part and aged up little Richie from a baby on season 1 to a elementary schooler.
@@LegendoftheAce1 maybe but all this erkel hurting the show is hindsight. The show was on for 9 years which is a lifetime for television shows. There mistake was not having a endgame and even then they still were able to write a series finale
Martin is the best sitcom of the 90s and nobody can change my mind on that lol.
I remember once as a kid me and my brother working on a science project while watching a rerun of Martin. The episode when Martin and Gina runaway to Jamaica and mother Payne loses it in the church. I swear I lost control of myself just laughing that my brother had to pat my back just to calmed me down. I'm not exaggerating, if my brother had not pat my back I might have died laughing.
@@osvie0167exactly
Istg until about age 7 I called this show "Steve Urkel" and I know I'm not the only one.
For better or worse, the character was a force of nature
I love the show and yes Urkel saved the show but the show focused way too much on him when the origins of the show was meant to focus on Carl& harriette since they were from perfect strangers
