Absolutely! Of course she (Daphne's Viv) was scaled down on purpose. In fact, they were scaling Janet's Vivian during season three. If you look at the clips in the video, the OG Aunt Viv moments are primarily from seasons one and two. We saw less of her in season three. There is even one episode where she is not seen at all. There is another where she is only seen towards the end of the episode with very few lines. It is the one where she and Phillip renew their vows. Janet was offered 10 or 13 episodes during season four out of 25/27 episodes. So, you see, Vivian was already being scaled down in the third season. The deal fell through so Daphne stepped in.

Which rightfully she disagreed with so they fired her because she was also having problems with Will and Alfonso.
I agree with a lot of the prior comments. I think one of the reasons why Aunt Viv sorta faded into the background is because she was just a nicer more accommodating performer, and this ended up being reflected in the writing- especially because the original actress was a freaking force of nature that, for better or worse, couldn't be contained.
The first was the best. She wasn’t a bad person she was uptight and on set with a young rapper. It’s too bad they couldn’t work it out she brought something to the show no one could replace.
First Aunt Viv aint crazy, she just sometimes goes on national TV and refers to herself in the third person The Rock did that and now he's #1 in Hollywood
I admit in some ways I fall under the "why not both?" category, but let's be honest - Janet IS Aunt Viv, and for even more than the so beautifully laid out reasons you provided: she was such a wonderful role model, I would think, for young black women. Forget that she was a great actress, forget that the character was great, but she was just a strong, intelligent, beautiful black woman. I can see her producing a child like Ashley and loving someone like Phil (though funnily enough, I can see DM-R as producing Hilary, lol). It is a real shame that it didn't work out. I still love the show so much, and I too like Will Smith best then. Before the show was on, I went to a concert on Miami Beach with my cousin to see Expose. Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff were one of the opening acts! I so treasure the "illegal" audiotape I made of that concert and the fact that I left it on for Fresh Prince. I LOVED that show that day, and so when his show came on, there was no way I was not going to love him and the show.
this recasting always reminds me of Clair from My Wife and Kids. The character completely changed personality after the recasting, would love to see a vid on that Vee.
The same thing happened to Harriet on Family Matters. They replaced "The OG" when she complained about the majority of the episodes being centered around Steve Urkel
*But you know what's crazy about that is jo marie Payton (OG Harriet) made that decision to leave at the end of the last season!! Like if you REALLY want to keep it 100, the show started centering around urkel in like season 4-5. Why wait that long??*
I can see why Hillary and Ashley got more focused episodes later on. In Hillary's case, they had her subplot with Trevor going on at the beginning of Season 4 and her subsequent recovery from it (in fact, I'd say that it was a pretty substantial reason why she wanted her own show subconsciously). As for Ashley, the actress was growing up so they could focus on more young adult subplots with her, like her episode with Jaleel White. That's not to say they couldn't focus on more Aunt Viv subplots, but given those two circumstances it shifted the lens a bit.
I enjoyed them both really, but I do remember being rather surprised that they were meant to be the same character. Would still happily watch either though.
I usually skip some endings of videos , but Vee, I never skip yours . My hubby and I stick around for the Alex Jones ending . Be killing us with that 😂😂😂😂
The 2nd Aunt Viv I could buy more as Hilary's mom. I seen the later seasons before the 1st couple. I definitely prefer Janet as Aunt Viv but I was glad they switched the layout of the house.
I agree, the only problem was it then made both Ashley and Carlton look out of place. Yeah 2 people of a lighter shade can have kids that are darker than them, but it seemed like a stretch looking at both James and Daphne. Janet being there at least made it more believable since some kids take one shade, while others might take the other shade
Watching the fresh prince of bel air and seeing the first Vivian Banks she gave really great advice and told Carlton that he can't take unidentified pills from other people. Also rest in peace to the late actor James Avery who played Uncle Phil. This show will forever bring laughter
I prefer Janet Hubert as Vivian Banks, since she really made the character her own, and showed that she was more than just a loving wife, loving mother, and loving aunt. She showed that Aunt Viv was a reasonable woman, who cared a great deal about those close to her, but was not about to let anyone walk all over her, or take advantage of her unconditional love, even when she was on their side. I definitely have to agree that Daphne Maxwell-Reid as Vivian Banks felt like an entirely different character, and that I barely remember anything about her.
*Which made NO sense imo at all because she (OG Harriet) felt like the show was centered around urkel too much........ like the show started centering around urkel in like season 4-5 If we wanna keep it real. Why wait so long til season 9 to do that??*
Bruh you put the nail on the head when you said the second felt like a placeholder. The first one IS Aunt Viv to me. Had more moments, central episodes and pizazz. She was strong and vocal. The second, while albeit more liked by the cast off-screen, just felt like a substitute. She was kind of just there. Good video.
The second Vivian was written very differently than the first more of stereotypical sitcom housewife. The first Vivian was shown more of a woman with a career as well as a mother. But believe or not Daphne Maxwell was about a decade older than Janet Hubert. There sounds like some truth to the Will being difficult to work with being young and inexperienced in TV but he was the star. Winifred Hervey talks about Will walking off set interviews.televisionacademy.com/interviews/winifred-hervey?clip=28223#show-clips
They reduced Aunt Viv’s role (and other adults) because the kids were older and producers/writers wanted to focus on them. You can’t blame the actress for the writing she received. That said, Janet Hubert has acted rather crazy about it all. She left the show in 1993. In 2018, her son attempted suicide. She went online to blame Will Smith. It’s been 25 years. It’s time to move on. Why would anyone subject themselves to that level of crazy by inviting her to a reunion? Her vitriol after one reunion sealed that deal.
I remember both aunt Viv's fondly, which is probably because both were part of the show for an almost equal amount of time. It's not like with Laurie on That 70s Show, where the second actress only played the role for a couple of episodes. Looking back on it, I realised I always considered the Aunt Viv's to kinda be two seperate characters, even as a child. Their personalities were just so different.
1st Viv was more strong minded...2nd kinda “played her role”. I had no prob w/either. Both very good actress & played the roles they were suppose 2 play...
Something I thought was interesting was that the 2nd actress looked a lot more like she would be related to hilary rather than the original aunt viv in didn't have much physical resemblance to her at all.
He will always be The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, to me, as well, Vee. Hey, would you consider doing a video over Family Matters, & how they kept dropping cast members, without explanation, & how they changed actresses for Harriet Winslow, in season 9??
You can almost call this the "Kristy Swanson" problem, a Medicore Actress who's most famous part and literally a footnote In Pop Culture as being the first Buffy Summers before Sarah Michelle Gellar, but if you say the name "Kristy Swanson" most Buffy Fans will go "WHO??" And that's what has Happened to Mrs Whitten, she's going to become this footnote in TV history. Like Dick Sargent or Lacey Gorenson.
I did the same thing you did, where primarily I watched the show on Nick at Nite where things were all jumbled up. However I wasn’t confused- instead, when I think of aunt viv I think of Janet’s character and her strong, awesome personality. Nothing wrong with Daphne, she was great and was still a bit of a tough mother, but it’s more like the powerful Viv was enough to bleed into the parts where she was in the background. And also, I don’t really think of one of them visually in my head when I think of aunt viv- the actresses and their looks take a backseat to the character.
First aunt is the best aunt. I guess it helps that she had the better script. She's definitely the one I remember. The second one I only remember because of Jazz's comment.
I was a fan of Maxwell-Reid long before I knew of Hubert. The writers knew Hubert was a triple threat talent wise. They showcased her talents in the scripts. They pulled back on the character with Reid. I'm sure they were reminded of the shows title, and Smith made demands, so this wasn't repeated. Hubert is my favorite. They let her shine.
At least they replaced her, Family Matters just got rid of characters without saying anything
Happy Days did it too with the eldest Cunningham.

Dis is my favourite show and I have seen hundreds of videos about dis and I still find it fascinating
I will always think of the Fresh Prince TV Show when ever I think of Will Smith
Its like when Harriet was replaced for the last season of Family Matters
*Which made NO sense imo at all because she (OG Harriet) felt like the show was centered around urkel too much........ like the show started centering around urkel in like season 4-5 If we wanna keep it real. Why wait so long til season 9 to do that??*
@@Simeautomatic100 she had things to doo man she either had a movie to film or family obligations it was her ...and urkel saved family matters
Lol DAMN I was just thinking that too.
Or Darren from Bewitched.
Yeah, the second Harriet Winslow, was SO DAMN FORGETTABLE!! Lol!
Good video.
I'm glad both Aunt Vivs are cool now especially with Will
OG Aunt Viv was so Iconic!!
Even in french, the voices are different for each aunt Viv
The second Vivian was written very differently than the first more of stereotypical sitcom housewife.
The first Vivian was shown more of a woman with a career as well as a mother. But believe or not Daphne Maxwell was about a decade older than Janet Hubert.
There sounds like some truth to the Will being difficult to work with being young and inexperienced in TV but he was the star. Winifred Hervey talks about Will walking off set

I’ve been watching your videos for like 6 hours this channel is underrated
Lol I watched it out of order and thought he remarried too. I was like 'they're taking this really well?'
Do one on the two different actresses who played the mom on Family Matters
1st Viv was more strong minded...2nd kinda “played her role”. I had no prob w/either. Both very good actress & played the roles they were suppose 2 play...
Something I thought was interesting was that the 2nd actress looked a lot more like she would be related to hilary rather than the original aunt viv in didn't have much physical resemblance to her at all.
This deserved a like from me, he took the words right outta my head
As a kid I thought the exact same thing about Uncle phill getting divorce and marrying another Viv😂
Uncle Phill was a great voice actor too. He voiced the Shredder and War Machine on the Iron Man animated series.
100% agreed he will forever be the fresh prince
I never knew there was a lightskin aunt Viv ontill i had social media. the country i lived never aired those seasons.
First aunt is the best aunt. I guess it helps that she had the better script. She's definitely the one I remember. The second one I only remember because of Jazz's comment.
I only remember the first Aunt Viv, I watched the show all the time
I was a fan of Maxwell-Reid long before I knew of Hubert. The writers knew Hubert was a triple threat talent wise. They showcased her talents in the scripts. They pulled back on the character with Reid. I'm sure they were reminded of the shows title, and Smith made demands, so this wasn't repeated. Hubert is my favorite. They let her shine.
aunt viv ballet episode still gets me to this day hahahaah, i want to be uncle phil. oh wow he opened up with that image hahaha
I like the first Aunt Viv, but I also think the second Aunt Viv had her moments, like that scene close to the end of the episode about Will's Dad.
