Hey everyone, just a quick note here... The use of a VCA Fader is not mandatory in Option#1, you can just "LINK" the Volume of those 2 channels without a VCA and that will also do the trick...I'm just used to working VCAs a lot ;-)
Hi Chris! Thanks for this tip! QUESTION: Has Cubase updated their console to support proper dual-mono or do we still have to do this work-around? Method 3 seems easiest to me. Thanks again! Cheers! Adam.
Excellent video. I linked it in Gearspace in the P42 Climax Line Amp thread, where we discussed such a routing in Cubase. Thanks a lot for the great help :)
Yaaaayyy! This is what I've been waiting for! Since I don't have a dual mono compressor and you hinted that you were going to help with that! You rule, dude!
Thanks for the video! I have one question: when you pan the send to the left (for instance), are you sending to the FX channel only the left channel, or are you just panning and sending the full signal to the left? If it's so it looks like it's not working as a real dual mono. Thank you for your effort and great content!
Thanks Chris. I have recently purchased the ISA Two Focusrite dual mono preamp. Is there a way to set this up in Cubase? I've followed your steps hoping it would translate but alas, no joy. Do you have any hacks (workarounds) to suggest?
great workarounds thanks! I love the VCA solution. A good plugin for that is also the Waves API 2500. You can even control the percentage of link between L/R, so it is some hybrid between dual mono and full stereo
Clever and useful tip, Chris! One little remark, you addressed a workaround for non-Pro Cubase users, but my understanding is that such versions don't have the 'send panning' option either (not sure as I use Cubase Pro).
@@mixdownonline It has? I just went by steinberg.help/cubase_pro_artist/v9/en/cubase_nuendo/topics/audio_effects/audio_effects_send_effects_setting_pan_t.html but I didn't test it for myself.
WOOT! Thank you Chris! So helpful, this would have taken me forever to figure out on my own and "tabarnaks!" would have been flying all over the place. Great tip, I have a mix I am going to test this on tonight!
i guess Im randomly asking but does anybody know a method to get back into an Instagram account..? I was dumb forgot my login password. I would appreciate any help you can give me.
Once again Chris Save the Day, Big thanks my friend P.S. Using the Copy setting Fonction of Cubase to copy setting between FX save me a lot of time and human error. Thanks gain for your Help
Hey, Chris! Thanks for that. I know the advanced option doesn't offer the link ability, but I guess the quick workaround for that would be to copy/paste settings from one to the other, as you make your adjustments... I guess... gonna try it out. One thing's for sure, it makes a heck of a difference! Thanks again!
Yes, you can change the settings on the first compressor, delete the second one and copy the first one into the second slot. But don't forget to go back and route plugin#2 back to the Right Side. The beauty of linked plugins is that you can make changes on both sides at the same time while the mix is playing, which makes more sense to me :-)
The upside of that last technique, is that on some plugins you can set up very subtle differences between the left and right channel, which on some plugins may make the effects slightly more analog realistic. Being that the stereo channels on actual analog gear are two matched, but actually slightly different circuits! These kinds of subtleties can add up to add more depths to a mix
I have a question. When I using this rear bus technique, I love it but I lost my -5db headroom and my LUFS is going up to about -13 and many mastering engineers want to a mixed file with -5db. Is this technique for mastering? Many thanks for your efficient tutorial.
@@mixdownonline Thanks Chris, I was surprised it would have a dual mono versus it offering parallel on it considering he designed it - he kind of missed that feature in his own signature software. Too funny!
¡Excelente! I can figure out too, one could use dual mono compression in some other situations, for example back panned vocals or guitars. Do you do this oft, or just when is really needed?
Hi Cris, thank you so much for the video! I did a little test a while ago, cause I wanted to know if the stereo compressor in cubase was really compressing equally both sides. So I put a test generator, a constant signal, to the left and a kick to the right. Only the kick was over the threshold. Visually the gain reduction to the Left side was very small. That made me think that maybe It compresses hybridly, stereo and dual mono. But I did not bounce anything to analyse properly. Is there any chance my suspicious are right?
No, I don't think it compressed hybridly. A kick full of transients and a sine wave signal will not have the same gain reduction with the same about of compression. your test results are normal for stereo compression with those 2 types of signals
@@mixdownonline they went to the same group track and the stereo compressor was in the group track. Sorry I didn't explain this part. So I was expecting everytime the kick hit at the right side It would cause a bigger gain reduction to the left side, cause of the equal GR of the stereo compressor. But maybe It was just visually not clear. Or maybe the bigger the signal the bigger the gain reduction following the logaritmic scale, like when we scroll the mouse on some volume automations values on the info line and it doesn't move them equally in absolute numbers.
I'll be watching live, I'll even have my cubase 10.5 on to try and learn along live. I swear I saw you at namm btw. I should have said hi. Oh regret is real. Anyway I love your cubase videos
Lol you're definitely right, that would do the same... I just love working with VCAs and often use them that I didn’t payed attention to the simple stuff Lol! I add this to the description of the video, thanks!
@Mr.Morpheus & @@mixdownonline Hi, I didn't try this, but... if you make two mono outputs on Audio Connection pannel, instead of one stereo, and then instead of using the output of every channel to route audio to Stereo Out, you can use two Sends to send left and right signal from each channel to the corresponding mono out (L or R), I think this works fine - of course, it is a bit of work setting every channel like so, but it could work. Only... why would that be usefull to, anyway?
Hi Chris. How do I transfer the processing of a track to another project in cubase 10.5? I recorded several tracks with a live drum set and after mixing one I would like to be able to import my mixed drum tracks into the other tracks. Thank you.
The first setup does not appear to be valid. It would only be valid if all the busses are in mono. That also defeats the point. I am correct in assuming that panning a send does not separate the left and right channels. It forces a sum of both according to the send pan setting. I will admit Cubase is not my DAW of choice. I am open to, myself, possibly not understand the pan law for sends coming from a stereo channel in Cubase Professional. Cubase is mostly for me to open sessions. It is not my main DAW. I am re-considering and thank you for the great videos
Actually, if you want to sum the L&R you need to use the "Combined Panning", the regular panning, like in the video, does not sum the L&R . Good observation though :-)
my friend Selim thank you for every thing . I guess you mean channel routing . this is cubase way to configure any insert channel to which side go wither left Or right I had video on that .also waiting for your way.
also in Reaper you can use DualMono. Just quckly use the matrix and add 2 instances of the compressor. One dedicated tomLeft channel, the other to right channel
I have a feeling you are not 100% right on your last method. The inserts as far as I know are serial which means the second plugin will get the mono signal from the left and than process that and not the clean right channel. Please correct me if I'm wrong!
That's what I was afraid of when I first tried this but no, the Insert Routing does not behave the same way, it keeps both sides independent. Which makes sense or else that feature would worthless imp.
I am a big fan of your tutorials for a long time and as always I enjoyed it much... Except when you press play and this guy (I wonder who it is) is singing : he sings out of tune on every ending aaarrgg.. ... I suggest to use vari-audio.
The advantage is that if something spiked pretty high on the right channel for example, the compressor on that side will tame it without grabbing your whole mix left and right. The compressors are set the same but they are processing different sounds especially if you're hard panning some instruments. Hope that makes sense.
When linked (as the only option in stock Cubase plugins), the stereo compressor acts on the left and right channels as if they were summed to mono in the detector part of the compressor: The compression of the left and right channels are not independent. The result is that the stereo image stays consistent as both channels are compressed equally. The point of the dual-mono set-up is that the left and right channels are actually independent: Although both compressors are set the same, they act on the left and right inputs independently. The result is that the stereo image moves around a bit as both left and right compressors do their work independently. In most typical cases you wouldn't want that, but in this specific case (emulating Schepp's "rear buss" effect) you do want that to happen.
