  • The REAR BUSS Parallel Compression Technique in CUBASE
    Andrew Scheps is a well known Grammy Winning Recording/Mixing Engineer and Producer who has worked with a lot of major artists like Adele, Green Day, Metallica, and Beyoncé just to name a few.
    The Rear Buss Technique is a classic one that Andrew uses all the time, it's actually part of his mixing template. In this video, I will share with you what this parallel compression technique is all about and how I use it in CUBASE.

    I use the Waves API2500 compressor for this. One can unlink the left/right channel hence letting the compressor process both channels independently. Works well :)

    My question is how do I go about sending a Mono Bus (lead Vox, 808) to the Rear Bus compression Channel. For some reason i'm unable to send Mono Channels only stereo Channels. Am I doing something wrong or failing to grasp a simple concept lol ? Looking forward to hearing from you!

I've been working out of Cubase since 4, and though I have other DAWs, it's just the most comfortable. That all being said, this one was super helpful! Hello Chris! Once again, thank you for your continued effort on making this incredibles, easy understanding videos! I really want to know the difference in level (if any) the Andrew Scheps 1176 is applying to the rear buss signal. I saw A. Scheps 1176 setting, but he uses the REV AE UAD 1176 which has the 2:1 ratio, wich I dont have, so I cant replicate the settings and find it for myself! I think that relationship in levels have a huge impact in the mixing levels, as it will define if you hear the vx and gtr mainly from the rear buss, the main buss or a equal balance of the two.

    Could I send audio from the individual tracks and not their group channels or stems?

    hi, nice tutorial, thank you!
    just wondering: 1. why you use a post send? wouldn´t a pre send keep the sound of the rear buss compression more constant, since fader changer affects threshold? 2. when it tried it out I got quite lot phase issues, except when I keep the fader down i seems ok. you got a tip for phasing? thaks mate!!!

    • @mixdownonline
      @mixdownonline  3 роки тому +1

      I keep it post cause I want to keep the same level relation that I have with the signal that goes to the main Mix Buss. Those levels need to be the same to avoid phasing issues and stuff. The channels that I send to the Rear Buss are my main instrument group channels so they don't move a lot.

    Hey Chris, thanks for your great videos. I like your stuff and wait for more every time. So one question to the use of compressor in the rear buss. i own the cla 76 - the same like your uad. but the difference is, the ratio at the cla 76 starts at 4, your uad emulation at 2. Is this a problem or must be the ratio 2:1. Greetings from Germany by Chris Sch. :-)

    • @mixdownonline
      @mixdownonline  3 роки тому +1

    Chris, another great video. Thanks a lot. I watched many of your videos and always learn something new. I have quick question regarding the rechnique you showed here. I'm a big fan of mixing into compressor. I always apply compressor on my main buss at the beginning straight after static mix and mix into it for that 'glue'. My question is... Can I use both techniques together? I mean apply compressor on main bus as I always do and use rear bus like you did here? Or its better to use one or the other separately? What is the difference between both? I would appreciate you answer or even new video regarding rear buss technique vs applying compressor on main bus for 'glue'. Thanks. Lucas

    • @mixdownonline
      @mixdownonline  4 роки тому +2

      Good question. Yes, you can use both. They have both different purpuses. The Rear bus will focus more on the interaction between the vocal and the instruments (exept drums) and give you more width.The stereo buss compressor is more to control the dynamics and general "glue" of the full mix. Andrew uses both on his mixes

      @@LucasMichalski not a all but it depends how much gain reduction you get. Don't forget that the Rear Buss is in Parallel. One question: how do you set the ‘correct’ volume of the REAR BUSS compression channel? ‘To taste’ or do you have a fixed starting point from which you work? Especially since you use it already at the beginning of mixing.

    • @mixdownonline

      I go to taste, to start with and sometimes ajust it as I go.

      @@mixdownonline Hi Chris, thanks for your replies. Yes i do have buses like you.
      Okay, so the rear bus goes to the stereo bus/mix bus? got it. I thought both stereo bus/mix bus and rear bus go to the master.
      what kind of compressor setting that you use for the rear bus most of the time? do you kill the transient in the rear bus with fast attack and kinda fast release so it serves a purpose as some kind of baseline to thickening and gluing all buses that go into stereo bus? Or do you put not so fast attack with medium release to let the rear bus still has some dynamic/movement and in your face/up front feel?
      thank you

    hello Chris! do you know if mr scheps send the general fx to the rear buss? if you know he does, does it at unity level?

    • @mixdownonline
      @mixdownonline  4 роки тому +1

      He sends all channels that the output is routed to his Mix Buss. The key is that the Send level of those channels going to the Rear Buss are at 0 and post fader, so basically you are making a copy of your mix (minus drums). That includes all fx.

    • @Bonzvy
      @Bonzvy 4 роки тому +1

      Most of the time the fx's are what creates some movement (at least I do some crazy stuff to my reverbs and delays) - so I would say it is essential to send those to the rear buss. justmy2cts ;)

    • @lucianogm
      @lucianogm 4 роки тому

      @@Bonzvy ok, but the rear buss is a compressor buss! wouldnt be better not sending those to the rear buss (or sending them at -15dB, for example) and send them very loud to the mix buss instead? this way you preserve the gral fx's signal dynamic range... just thinking out loud and sharing... 👍

      @@lucianogm i think at this point it is just personal preference/mixing taste and is also depended on the song you mix - for example on a more mellow song i would send the fx's into the rear buss because i want to glue the tracks with fx's together

    Dual mono does not create movement, it creates width!

    • @mixdownonline
      @mixdownonline  4 роки тому

      With Dual Mono Compression, each side will not have the same amount of gain reduction and that is what creates movement. In the end, it doesn't matter what you call what dual mono compression does, if it sounds good is what that counts :-)

    • @pclairoot
      @pclairoot 4 роки тому

      @@mixdownonline It does not create movement but width! What's the point of using say a stereo comp on a drum bus that will compress the right side each the floor tom panned to the left is hit? Movement is created by the pumping

    • @pclairoot
      @pclairoot 4 роки тому

      @@mixdownonlineThat is not movement. It is width..

    • @mixdownonline
      @mixdownonline  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, width for sure. Again, if you have a different gain reduction on each side of the stereo source, you will have subtle randomness movement between the Left and the Right side when the gain reduction differs from one side to another, that is just normal (That is what helps creating the width). Not the same movement effect as pumping. It is subtle but it's there. But again, who cares? That's the way I see it so let's agree to desagree :-)
