      I put up 550 completely raw in my heyday! Wouldn't have even thought of using one of those blasted shirts! I had friends who wore them. They said all they do is protect the shoulder joints. So I put one on and had to pull 135lbs down myself because the shirt held it up by itself! So I vowed to never compete in anything but raw events. That was even when just becoming popular. In the early 80's

    I wonder if some of these powerlifters realize the damage they're doing to their bodies in the long run.
    I boxed all through my twenties and thirties. I'm now in my fifties and I have a left arm that feels like it's on fire at night from my elbow all the way through my hand telescoping my punches one too many times.
    They wanted to do surgery on my sinuses 20 years ago but I have never let anybody touch my nose other than in a fight it's been broke I know of a 5 x possibly 7. I had cartilage hanging out for about 6 months one time. I was young and full of testosterone when I just didn't care. I was too tough for my own good and I never thought about how it would affect me later on in life.
    Don't get me wrong, I think weight-training is a very good thing but when you push it that far you've got to be doing damage to your spine and your rotator cuffs and knees Etc.
    With that being said as long as I keep working out with weight training I have less pain but I'm not lifting the weight I was 20 years ago. I don't know if my body can withstand that kind of pressure at 50 years old but I'm bigger now than I was then and I'm not trying to see how powerful I can get. I just know that if I don't do some weight training that I hurt all over. I don't think it would be wise to push the limit at my age. It's just some food for thought.

    • @MrCarnutbill67
      @MrCarnutbill67 2 роки тому

      Powerlifting has never been about being healthy. It is super damaging to your body but some people thrive in that world of pain. It aint for me but I'm glad they do it.

    • @johnblackwood5308
      @johnblackwood5308 2 роки тому +2

      @@MrCarnutbill67 I could relate to everything they're doing 20 years ago because I used to be a boxer. I also got into some powerlifting but I never competed. I was stupid strong to but I just never cared for the competition. Even when I boxed I wasn't fighting the guy in front of me. I was fighting myself to see how far I could go and how better I could get. I was definitely not a typical boxer by any stretch of the imagination but I was really good and I was really strong 12 years ago.
      At 50 years old with injuries in both rotator cuffs, injuries in both knees, sinuses that are destroyed from too many broken noses I look back and think I must have been out of my mind.
      I know that if I could go back in time I would have done it differently but I still loved being as strong as I was 12 years ago. I'm only five foot seven and I had my own gym in my house. I could do 400 pounds on the bench press twice without a spotter. Today I doubt I can lift what I used to warm up with and I would likely tear a rotator cuff or blow out an elbow. When you're young you just don't think then all the injuries you suffer I'm going to come back to haunt you later on in your life.

    What is the point of doing an axle deadlift (at 1:17) using straps? The whole exercise is to test the lifter's GRIP on a thick bar. If they're gonna cheat and use straps, why did this guy make it into a list of legitimately strong men?

    • @J.c410
      @J.c410 3 роки тому

      The bar is much stiffer and farther away from you when you lift making it a unique type of deadlift. Grip strengh is tested in many other ways in strongman. Without straps axel deadlift is lame as fuck, you can barely hold on to it.

      @@J.c410 . . Many modern strongman events are based on the old-time strongman mainstay lifts that most legendary strongmen practised. NONE of them used straps . . or steroids either, for that matter. The Strongman of today is a man who even claims a "world record" in what is in reality an equipped event, differing completely from that lift's origins. I suggest that modern day Strongmen learn the lessons of their forebears and train their grip strengtth accordingly. If it was good enough foe Herman Goerning, it should be good enough for you!
