    • @JonHop1
      @JonHop1 Рік тому +26

      @trekker75 THe reason arm wrestlers cant straighten their arms is from 2 things.. Shortening of the bicep from constant training, then the elbow joint starts to become calcified. This is the term they call "bone lock".. Indeed, on top of constant stretching over time, Devon would need surgery to remove the calcium build up in his elbow. You can literally see, pre-surgery, Devon's elbow bone grow as he arm-wrestled over the years.

Devin's arms do not rest on the sides like normal humans, his biceps are always flexing because he doesn't stretch and or work extension an equal proportion to balance. They seem like nice guys, and always have a good vibe going on in their content. Some of the other arm-wrestlers, especially the guys from Europe, have a more stoic, reserved personality. These guys are relaxed, and have a good sense of humor. Devon turns on his ego during the tournaments, but it’s all in the spirit of competition, and to give the crowd some entertainment for those in attendance. He puts on a show, and makes sure the crowd gets their money’s worth. He’s been a good ambassador for the sport, and has definitely helped to popularize it, making it grow to what it is today.

    As someone that does bodywork: I'm a huge fan of body tempering. There are so many tools within that game and the systems are just complex enough; the special thing about all that weight is that it literally forces fluids through the fascia, ligament tendon and muscle body and skin. It really helps expose the elasticity that the joints may or may not have.
    And when you mix modalities like the flossing and tempering you get these really awesome adaptions. It's also really interesting getting young athletes that didn't care about the names of the muscles until suddenly they can feel the insertion point of the brachial radialis for an especially grizzly place between the lumbar and thoracic.
    Donnie mentioned his parents sleeping better. Woman with cptsd not able to get out of fight or flight for years did the lower back body tempering: when she got up to put on her shoes she just laid down on my sofa and fell asleep for 20 minutes. Being able to tap into the nervous system I've used expensive devices but nothing really does it to get deep into the back and release something you've been holding for years and not knowing it the way the body tempering does.
    Not for everyone but definitely the muscly, big and arthritic athletes it's as big of game changers as I've ever used.

    • @DefeatLust

      What are your thoughts on this versus just regular solo foam rolling?

    • @thetruemorg
      @thetruemorg Рік тому +4

      @@DefeatLust @JoMomma239 not too long ago there was kind of a trend in everyone going against foam rolling. I won't go that far to say that it's useless but it sure isn't as body tempering. Has a body worker it is difficult to get people to buy into the idea of the pain that they will probably have to get into in the soft tissue to really help the problems they are having.
      To really get body tempering really on point you have to have a second person who has a pretty good idea of how to move the weight. Foam rolling a couple of very specific areas like the IT band and the stomach and the ribs can be super useful especially to get through initial pain.
      The most success I've had with foam rolling is actually to cut a really dense one in half like you would a sausage down the center and use it to be able to get better positions. I've also seen foam rollers in good places like the low back to be able to create some movement between each one of the spinal columns if you can get into the right position. With a lot of bodyworking modalities it's hard to do true studies because the same area that needs a little bit of mobilization in one person may need stiffining in another person even in the same joint.
      At the end of the day what they did with the flossing, wrapping the arm, and then using the heavy weight to force blood and other fluids through the fascia ligaments and tendons can be done in 10 minutes. or I could spend an hour and 3 sessions digging my thumbs and fingers in to try to be able to release the origin points and clear out the tissue. You see folks like Dr hightower using his thumbs nearly getting professional athletes who are used to paying nearly in tears. I work with much more general population who sometimes aren't even willing to walk to repattern the work I've done.
      For the regular weekday CrossFit athlete I would suggest getting yourself a floss band for like 20 bucks, a used lacrosse ball to be able to get in to the armpits and other tender places, a golf ball for the feet to roll those places out, a place to hang to decompress the spine and a good electrolyte to make sure there's enough minerals the hydration gets down deep in the tissues. A foam roller is nice especially to get tricky areas by yourself but it is totally not a panacea the way it was sold in the mid-2000s.
      My experience with other body workers are that if they do structural integration or rolfing you're going to really get the work you need done. Physical therapists are nice but so many times I have found that they're just clocking in for a paycheck especially if it's on insurance.

    My theory is Devon let his arm get arthritic on purpose, so no one can get his arm down in an armwrestling match! Great video, thanks for sharing!

      I got that exact same vibe - and honestly the whole time I was thinking this too. This is definitely bro-science, if you know that term.... you see a lot of that in bodybuilding, where ancedotal experiences get passed around, and become set in stone, but arent really based on science. There's a place for it - because afterall, that's what humans do - we try things out, make a note of what affect it had, and we share our experiences. I'd imagine this technique of rolling could be beneficial in the right circumstances, but I think it could also be harmful for someone with injuries like Devon possibly

      I personally don't see how having a heavy piece of wide metal would help when you're a guy that big pushing down. He says the roller is 140 something pounds, but no doubt it'd be easier to get a higher pressure on a smaller spot if he used a narrower roller. Having to roll it with your hands rather than with bearings causing uneven pressure and arm fatigue on the person performing it too. Few things seem a bit silly about it. But hey ho

    Must have been crazy painful for Devon, if you’ve seen him flex his bicep he has a golf ball sized knot right on top of it, he says the tightness helps him in arm wrestling.

      He likely has so much osteoclast development at this point, that position is “straight” for him. The joint is simply structurally different at this point.

    if you can’t extent your elbows, it looks painful. I had it. I did 1 year of tricep training only, and that cured my elbows.
    Feels like your olecranon joint keeps on growing, so you can’t stretch your elbows anymore.
