Are you new to learning sign language? This video is going to be just want you need to hear. While I was doing a different video on location at the Fresno Chaffee Zoo for ASL Basics, I met up with Courtney Hall, who works there at the zoo and is herself learning sign language. We did an interview with her and I share my 3 biggest takeaways from that interview with beginners in mind. I know how extremely difficult it can be to learn a language at times. So that is why I wanted to offer some advice and encouragement to those going through the difficult process of learning another language. Additionally, these 3 tips are not sign language specific. You could use them to help you or someone you know to learn any language.
If you would like to skip the interview and go straight to the tips, you can utilize the time stamps below. Please share this video with anyone you know that is currently trying to learn a foreign language.

What was your biggest takeaway from today's video?

    • @jamesdavis-ford6882

The biggest takeaway for me is that if I want to consolidate what I’m learning then I really need to find folks to practice with and be willing to make mistakes as it’s an integral part of learning.

I want to learn ASL for 2 reasons:
    1) run into people occasionally that communicate with ASL.
    2) And my main reason for wanting to learn ASL. And that is that I am developing hearing loss. And while I can still hear well enough for people like you to tell me what the word is that your signing. I want to learn so I have all the communicational advantages I can have just encase I do lose my hearing enough. Thank you for the videos.

My father in law ended up doing the same thing. He started to lose his hearing about 10 years ago and decided to start learning sign language while he could still hear. How has learning the language been for you so far?

Never really thought about hearing loss, but ASL would definitely help just in case!

Oh.. I did recently join a Deaf Sunday school, not only does this help my interaction and receptive skills but now I have learned a lot of religious signs too. I suggest others to be look for the same in their areas. To me, immersion is the key

Love your videos especially because of your appropriate slower speed for a new ASL language learner! I am a retired special education teacher and university teaching methods instructor and have always been passionate about learning ASL. However, teaching full time while married and raising 3 children kept me extremely busy to be able to take time for my passion! Now that I'm retired, I have been spending hours a day practicing ASL on line as well as attending an ASL club led by a deaf woman. We are not permitted to talk in an effort to immerse ourselves in the language. However, as you pointed out, this process is very frustrating for she signs quickly and my recall of my signs frustrates me. Your suggestions have inspired me and I am determined to succeed! I have been trying to find someone who is deaf that would practice with me, but have not succeeded yet! As you pointed out, repetition and practice are key to learning! As a matter of fact, there is much research out there to support those key aspects of learning. I am going to incorporate your videos into my daily review. Thank you so much for your inspirational videos and method of teaching and encouraging ASL learners! Barb A

Thank you so much for this Channel Chris! Before my father passed away from a brain tumor when I was a child he lost his speech and my mother started teaching my sister and I ASL. Unfortunately, he passed away before we could fully learn the language but I'm now diving back into ASL and I'm excited to be of service. I'm so happy I came across your videos! They are extremely helpful.

I work in an optometrist office and we have a few staff who can sign, one of them is one of our eye doctors, who is the owner’s son. Owner is also an eye doctor. Anyways she has a friend who teaches ASL. So once a week, during COVID, we have a Zoom class. When we first started, it was pre -COVID and we only got one class in before lockdown. So we started classes again using Zoom. One of the reasons for learning. ASL is to learn signs relative to our line of work. When we first got started earlier this year and when I started discovering some UA-cam videos teaching ASL, I very excited to watch and learn! I have to say I didn’t come upon your videos until just a few weeks ago when we started class again. I first saw Bill Vicars’ videos and enjoyed them very much! And when I saw yours, I shared with my group because it’s more of what we needed for the basics. So thank you! I’m learning a lot from your videos!

My reason for learning how to sign is because I am an auto insurance agent, and I have about 5 deaf mute customers, and I get really frustrated that I cannot communicate with them. Also, I'm sure they get very frustrated themselves that we cannot understand them. So to me, it is very important that I learn to be able to communicate with them and make them feel a little better knowing that I actually was able to understand and reply to them. So thank you very much for your videos.

Thank you very much for this interview video. My main reason to wanting to learn ASL is to help people in my community. You see, I’m a Jehovah witness and one of my main goal is to help people understand the Bible and help them learn the truth on their own. With this pandemic a lot of people don’t know why things are happening and they ask them self if somehow is connected to the Bible, specially the deaf community. But sadly the religious leaders are so concerned about how they goin to get the next pay check that they not even calling their members to encourage them to remain calm and trust in God.
I love all of your videos but sadly I can’t afford to pay for the lessons. We Jehovah’s witnesses don’t get pay to teach the Bible. Thank very much for your contributions to to help people like me, so I can help others as well.
May Jehovah bless you and your family, and may he bless all of your wonderful desires to help people like us. Stay safe

I work at a hospital while going to school to become a physical therapist assistant. I figured it would be helpful learning ASL working in the medical field. And, I was curious if there were anyone else interested in being an ASL study practice partner. With the pandemic in our country, our school has shut down. I try practicing in the mirror, but I feel the interaction and feedback would be extremely helpful. Whether Skype, Zoom, Facetime, or any other video conferencing app, I'm sure that there is someone else who could benefit from having a practice partner.

    • @ChrisGorges
      @ChrisGorges  4 роки тому +1

It is great to hear that you are leaning ASL and going into the medical field. In regard to practice partners, due to the pandemic, I am going to set up weekly group practice sessions for all students that are interested in joining. I'm working on getting everything set up so I can start April 1st. Go ahead and send me an email at chris@aslbasics.com and I'll send you a Zoom link. The first group session will be this Wednesday 5pm Pacific time.
