    What was your biggest take away from the interview?

  • @Fullofbull58
    @Fullofbull58 2 роки тому +2

    Thanks for this interview. I’m studying to become an interpreter and find these conversations inspiring. Would love to see more long winded conversations on this channel about various interpreters and their stories about how they learned ASL!
    If you do…I’ll probably watch/listen to each one like 20 times! lol

    Chris this interview was fantastic! I listened to it twice in its entirety. There is so much good info packed into this 51 minute video. All of your followers will want to hear what Sandi has to share. She is a wealth of wisdom and insight! My take away would be remembering to be open to the many different ways of communicating and keeping in mind that there are so many ways to get involved (not only interpreting) and be a part of the ever evolving language of sign and to get out there TODAY and get going. "Don't wait any longer" if you feel called to learn ASL as I do 🤗 dive in right now. You won't regret it! Thanks again Chris so glad that I found your channel. God bless you and Johnni!

    22:43 Speaking of small towns, I was, not long ago, thinking there was nowhere in this small town where I could learn sign language or even find anyone who needed an interpreter. Then, one day, I went to the Tuscumbia, AL public library and saw some photos of Helen Keller, then I realized that the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind was across the street from there and just a few blocks behind the public library is Helen Keller's birthplace and museum. Every June, there is the Helen Keller Festival here.
    Well, duh. If there isn't anywhere HERE in his small town where I could not learn sign language, there is surely nowhere on this earth. I haven't looked into it yet and can only fingerspell right now, but if anyone thinks your town is too small to learn sign language, think again. If only you check out UA-cam, you can do pretty well.
    I learned to fingerspell in grammar school (1968) because my best friend had a family member who was deaf, so my bestie taught me to fingerspell and I have learned how to do that well. I still have so far to go, but even fingerspelling is something.
    I don't know why my bestie in grammar school and I didn't learn more sign language because we could've communicated from across the room and across the playground without anyone knowing what we were saying!
    A question for older signers, I have arthritis in my hands and have trouble doing the "m" and the "r". Does anyone else have arthritis who has any suggestions on how to make it easier when you are in extreme pain from signing?

    I’ve been trying to learn sign language before our son is looking to us for communication skills we don’t have. I really like your videos. I haven’t watched them all yet but I was wondering if you have any with simple everyday conversations between people done slowly. I think that might help us learn in our household. Thanks. I appreciate what you do

      I think that it is great that you are currently learning sign language for your son and is very commendable. As of right now, we have a pretty good variety of content on the channel and our website, but so far we haven't done a slow conversation between two people. However, we do offer free practice sessions on Wednesdays where you can find others of a similar skill level so you can practice and learn from each other (you can learn about this on our website too which is at aslbasics.com) I hope this helps and I appreciate the suggestion and feedback. I hope you find this helpful and let me know if you have any further questions.

      Chris Gorges thanks. Our local college is trying to get a sign language class set up but f doesn’t have anyone to teach it. I’m waiting for a call back from them about it too. I just started a Facebook study group. Is it alright to share your content with it? And if we can organise an in person group is it okay to air your videos and or join the practice sessions?

    I’m interested in learning sign language. I’ve spent a little time on the Internet, and I was hopeful. But, your video has made me lose that hope. You’ve made me realize I can never be involved enough to actually learn it.

    I really don’t like interpreting for the college/educational setting.. that’s my least favorite.. I love freelancing and I love voicing which it seems to be most interpreters dread.
