Her smoothness of signing I found it that as a Deaf person it wants me to communicate more with her. Often times many interpreters make Deaf people feel like they are doing us a favor n 4get that we need an interpreter. That is 1 of many reasons why Deaf culture does not fully accept some hearing people.

I'm glad that you enjoyed the interview and the way that she signed. It's true that interpreters should be ones deaf would want to communicate with. Thanks for sharing that with us. I do have another interview lined up with a deaf man that is almost finished with getting his college degree that I think will be really cool. Thanks for your input!

Hi, if you are okay with it, would you mind explaining a bit more about what you mean by how some interpreters make you feel? As in they are condescending, or they make it all about themselves? Or other reasons why Deaf people might not want to interact with hearing people? Thank you in advance for any insight you can give.

@@iamthelomaxIn my experience interpreters begin having conversations of their own with who we were supposed to be communicating with. The interpreter develops an attitude of superiority as if we are stupid n without them we r incompetent. I am not saying they (interpreters) all r bad. I am glad that they r a barrier breaker for us in some way. One other among many is that I have always found that their signing does not coincide with what was said to me. I personally lost faith in them n have found myself just not using anyone. In the case of the video in which I comment I like the interpreter in her smoothness how she sign not as if trying to impress with their fast speed. Speed sign doesn’t impress me they always get it wrong. I am not alone in this. Other Deaf same problem. I actually have graduated into a level where I detest putting my self around hearing people. ASL is a language for Deaf because there is something going on with our ears. It’s not a ridiculous song with their tongue stuck out ten miles out. I hope I answered somewhat as to question. Thank you.

@@noaslfakers6618 Yes it does and I really appreciate you taking the time to explain it to me, it makes total sense the way you put it. Sounds very frustrating. All the best to you!

Thanks so much for this series of ASL videos. I began learning ASL a couple of years ago through 8-week class sessions (one day per week) at our local LGBT Community Center. Because the classes are only offered a couple of times a year, it really helps to be able to use UA-cam videos to keep studying on my own between class sessions. There are also some ASL events held each month locally by the deaf and HH community to which hearing ASL students are invited. I used to go to at least one per month so that I could practice with fellow students and members of the deaf community. Unfortunately, however, the pandemic has prevented such events from taking place for the past six months, making videos like these more important than ever. I really enjoyed this video in particular. Knowing that Konae was able to become an interpreter after only three years of continuous study is very encouraging. Some times I look at my instructor (who has phenomenal skill) and I think, "Good lord, it'll take me twenty years to achieve some degree of fluency in this stuff!" This video showed me that, with continued effort on my part, it might not take as long as I thought. :-)

Thanks for sharing, the time it takes to become a professional interpreter defiantly depends on how much time, effort, and dedication ... the more you focus your energy on it, the less time it will take you. Keep up the great work!

Loved this interview. I really appreciate her signing and talking. While listening to her, i realized i knew most of her signs and could have understood her if the video was muted. But i wouldn't have been able to understand Chris. Chris could you also sign in these interviews so possibly we could watch it muted and see how much we understand?

Absolutly, and if you ever join our weekly practice sessions, they are always interpreted which can be a great way to puck uo some extra vocab. I plan on uploading some clips soon

She really struck a cord when she described how her shyness wasn't the focus of interpreting; that the focus was to help communicate as the interpreter.
