The praise preceding 21-year-old folk/country singer Colter Wall is immense. Steve Earle says Colter Wall is "the best young singer-songwriter I've seen in 20 years." Rick Rubin is also piling compliments on the young singer from Swift Current, Saskatchewan.
See the young singer's talent for yourself in this CBC Music session. Wall says that most of the songs on his new, self-titled album are autobiographical. With themes that include a drunken brush with the RCMP, a song titled "Codeine Dream" plus a murder ballad, one certainly hopes that at least the third in that list is fictional. It's hard to believe that Wall is as young as he is when you first feel his baritone rumble into your ears - like a truck cruising the gravel back roads of rural Saskatchewan. The gravity in his voice matches the authenticity of his lyrics.
You may have heard this name before, though: Wall's father is Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall. One can't help but wonder about the father-son relationship after listening to the wayward tale of "Thirteen Silver Dollars." But who knows where the young Wall gets his inspiration? The important thing is that he has a lot of it, as well as prodigious talent, creativity and that beautiful baritone.

Album version is pretty good, but yes I almost wish I hadn't heard brewery sessions first.
For real!😂
Yea that brewery session is a little more fast paced . I agree it is better. The music video is real good on this song
The vocals on it and on all the other brewery sessions he was on are self-admittedly forced, and it's not how he plays and sings anymore.
@@Liam-fx9xf so true, I like a lot more how he sings now
@@augustodumon9777 I agree. Although, some of his older songs are my favourite regardless of how the vocals are, Caroline being one of them. Nonetheless, his voice now is still amazing.
American outlaw music is alive and well, sleep well Johnny, Merle and Waylon, all is well
Awesome that he is Canadian but can play with the best of those
After this song I am feel like old cowboy
The power of music! :)
Its fantastic how we can feel the anger only by listen to the chords...
This one compared to the brewery session one gives a bit of sad, almost somber tone. While the one on the brewery session is angrier, which either way both sound good with this type of murder ballad, in the brewery session, you can imagine the man who killed Kate McCannon still angry having to remember all of this, while listening to this version, I imagine him looking back at this, and instead of anger at this, he's regretful, he regrets killing Kate McCannon and not just walking away, or even better, he regrets ever meeting her.
I think the setting - Studio 211 - is more prone to somber than it is to angry, so you're right on point with the vibe. Even ore on point with the new context of the performance! Please, peruse our catalogue and elucidate on something else we've posted!
Any of colters live versions are godly.
Old soul for sure
Love his voice
22 years old with that voice . . . oh boy
I think I prefer it with the foot drum but still good
Agreed. It's almost a different song. I need the Brewery Sessions version that's on youtube on my ipod. I can't get enough of that version of the song. It's just so good.
I have a copy of it, pm me and I'll add you to the list of people to alert when I have it hosted somewhere :)
EDIT: Forgot UA-cam doesn't do PMs properly anymore, stupid.

Cheers
Thank you, had the audio and video but deleted both thinking they would stay up here. Do you have the video version as well of the original brewery session; shame those got taken down.
Yeah foot drum is perfect addition.
I love a story with a happy ending ☺
His voice is like a succulent steak that cuts like butter... oof ! 🤤😚😘
I really like the way he goes about playing and singing.
this is when he plays guitar and a drum with his back heel..🔥🇺🇸✌
The warm lighting here adds so much to the experience of the music
That's on purpose! 🖐
@@cbcmusic Well done, I enjoy it deeply :)
This is better than the version on Spotify!
That guitar sounds so good
It's an old 47 martin I think it sounds crazy
The quality of this recording is other worldly
He works best when it's just him, the guitar and the foot drum but I love this song no matter how it's done
Holy Lightening. That version is monster good. Hear the other ones. That low E string not buzzing here. Beauty!
A masterpiece.
Hell Ye this guy is a legend BORN A CENTURY LATE
Thank God for that!
thanks bro for being REAL...that is a uncurrent thing nowadays i guess.
Brutal.
It's incredible how much better the old Martin sounds in this video vs the repo model in the brewery sessions. A thought.
That guy is soooooo amazing
whoa....
Great performance. Love that voice. R
Legend.
wooowoooo AWESOME
I do like the brewery session . Its just better. It needs to be released.
the raven is a wicked bird
His wings are black as sin
And he floats outside my prison window
Mocking those within
And he sings to me real low
It's hell to where you go
For you did murder Kate McCannon
When I first met TomMcCannon
I was working in the mines
Said he had himself a dark haired daughter
With long, green eyes
And when she and I did meet
She was bathing in the creek
Prettiest girl in the whole damn holler
That ain't no lie
So I went a courtin' Kate McCannon
Got me a job and I quit my ramblin' and
Every day I'd save
A quarter of my pay
I could buy a diamond ring
Lord and one day I come home to find
My darlin' angel's not inside
So I made for the creek
Where she and I did meet
And found her with some other lover
And I put three rounds into Kate McCannon
3:59 Best!
#Unconditional
needs the foot drum for sure but either way still awesome!!
anybody knows where I can find the brewery session version ?
here ya go man, i don't know why they took it down (i think $$$ based since Colter is signed now), ua-cam.com/video/F-GvExYwpRI/v-deo.html but that's the best version there!
I have a copy of it, pm me and I'll add you to the list of people to alert when I have it hosted somewhere :)

First is better!!!! Colter Wall!!!!
And so I put three rounds into Kate McCannon
Puberty hit this dude like a ton of bricks lol
sorry, I prefer the sessions version.
And the moral of the story is.... be honest about your intentions.
Ok shoot me. Talkin’ hard like that: recomment !
He said he had himself a dark haired daughter, and that was when everything started...
Jesus Christ loves you u
OK. Am I the only one who thinks this sounds off without the drum?
long green eyes? what
Hmm
Long doesnt mean litterly long. I feel like it's a similar saying to "why the long face?"
Long meaning big.
@@harmondraws exactly. Sad green eyes basically.
Lone
Don’t try to be cool now cbc
twilight zone
Am I the only one that feels like the voice is a little forced.....??????
hmmm in what way?
Thomas Cleveland totally agree! Colter is absolutely one of my favorite artists, seen him plenty and listen to him daily, but sometimes some of his annunciations make it seem like he forces it to get that low. Which I think I remember hearing an old interview where he talked about how it took him a while to find his voice and he found he liked it best deep. The mans a genius and whatever he does I’m glad he does it haha
Yeah...no....
Sounds like he gets into a character almost. I like it.
