  • Are you afraid to make the switch from solvent to waterborne paint? So was renowned painter Charley Hutton at first ... but he quickly learned how easy it is to use PPG's Envirobase High Performance waterborne paint, and he's amazed at the dead-on color matches. Charlie, you are 100% right in hanging the parts for control coat!! Do not let anyone tell you different! You are taking a huge risk by not doing it that way! Not all colors are as consistent matching as you may think, or as PPG may claim! I have been a production and custom painter for over 30 years. I have owned my own shop since 1995 . I have sprayed a huge variety of Oem factory colors, from 3 stage pearls, candies, to the ridiculous 4 stage colors. I have been spraying envirobase since 2007 and I guarantee you that the chance of color miss match is very high when spraying in pieces! I know because I have resprayed enough jobs to never try it again! Most of the time my spray outs, of certain colors, do NOT even match the variant deck colors! Again not as consistent as you may think or as PPG may claim!! Some colors are just too transparent and you can only be so consistent when spraying a job worrying if you have obtained coverage and uniformity. The risk is just too high with the insanely labor intensive work that you do! Remember it only takes one repaint to ruin your year! LOL😆 Love your work!😎

I think the biggest difference with water borne base is it always required a very high end class of resins that most solvent borne systems didn't use. The few solvent bornes that did use the highest quality resins have phenomenal performance, along with a price to match. Reduction in VOC limits has brought about an expansion of water borne base, and with it a reduction in component cost due to economies of scale and greater availability for applications of all types. I have used some of these high end solvent borne systems, and their performance certainly is impressive. In the past most people stayed away from them, due to cost.

This system has its pros and cons vs solvent. Humidity is a killer for flash time even using venturi driers. We used to fire the burner in the booth in the summer just to dry the incoming air. Necessary evil running high production. From what ive heard, the test market for water was in the Southwest region, at least for BASF anyway. Of course the success was good in dry heat. I do like the Envirobase vs the 90 line though. Ive been trying to develop a cordless heated venturi drier but my engineering knowledge is lacking to make it go the distance. Million dollar idea. Patent pending.
