The only thing missing from this video was the crackpipe smoking comedy oneliners that David normally manages to inadvertently work into each of his forays infront of the lense. 👍

Great video!! I owned one very similar to the one you are reviewing. Although it was several years ago I thought that it shot very well. I didn’t see much need for a recoil pad either. I would shoot on average of 200 round per range day. But, your comments are the reason why I sold it. I am taller and slimmer and it didn’t fit me the best in the world. When using it I would just change my shooting style to bust clays.

My wife uses an O/U shotgun made by Baikal, but marketed here in the USA at one time as the Remington Spartan 310. Stainless steel receiver, ported barrels, screw in choke tubes. The Model 310 was marketed as the "target" version of the gun and has nicer wood (nothing fancy, but not bad at all) She has been using it for clays shooting since about 2008 and it has never malfunctioned or been a problem. I paid $400 for the gun in 2008. I added a full set of extended choke tubes (cyl. skeet, skeet, I. cyl., Lt. Mod., Mod., I. Mod. and Full), it uses a common thread pattern and chokes are easy to get. The 8 choke tubes rivaled the price of the gun. So, do give that some consideration.
My only criticisms...it is a 20 gauge built on a 12 gauge frame, so it tends to be a bit heavy for a 20 gauge. She likes it though, less recoil and better follow through than her much slimmer and lighter Ruger Red Label 20 gauge. The Red Label is an older model (1983) with fixed skeet/skeet chokes, which she uses for skeet. The shorter stock works for her as she is 5'-3" tall. I had the stock of the Red Label shortened for her.
The barrel selector of the Baikal is a bit strange. I'm glad you covered that. It defaults to the lower barrel first. You select the the upper barrel first by pressing forward on the single trigger. Works fine, but you have to remember that each time you fire or open the gun you have to press the trigger forward again. If you are at a station with incomers for a second target and have several doubles to shoot at that station, you have to remember to set the trigger. OR put the more open choke in the top barrel for that station.

Sir, I really like your fair appreciation of the BAIKAL you shoot with. You know your stuff, Congratulations. No recoil pad, low stock at the comb and approximativ LOP, whatever the brand, Shooter is more prone to miss targets. Optimal shotgun fit is the green light to start on the right foot... Poor fitting leads to poor gun mount, poor gun control and hesitation. Result = missing the clay. Thank you for your video.

Some Hungarians who used both says that Baikals (well, they are actually IZH here, after Izhevsk Mechanical Plant) are more robust and realible while TOZ shotguns (looks like TO3 with Russian letters - Tula Arms Plant) have much nicer/better, much tighter pattern (yet they are a bit more sophisticated guns and not that robust). The IZH-27 O/U shotgun's ejector prone to break, but not a real problem, you will have an extractor gun than. But you have to accept that it is a tool and not an instrument.

      * When mounting that gun try keeping your head up, and then bring the stock up to your check, instead of bring your cheek down to the stock. You look like you're shooting a rifle and not a shotgun. I can forgive you since that is the way most people shoot today. It's the result of the clay target mentality which rely on how well one tracks a clay target in order to gain a higher score. Since rifle shooters wrap themselves all around their stocks to make their shot as precise as possible, the clay target folks thought that was necessary for their games.
I must say that with the exception of double triggers, Baikal's SST system ( if I understand it correctly ) makes the most sense of any SST system for use in a gun used for huntimg. One can operate it while mounting the gun, and one doesn't have to take his eyes off of the bird.
