I've been shooting a Baikal SxS since 1978. I own a bunch of guns, but that old Baikal is the one that accompanies me hunting grouse, every time. It is the gun I have paid the least for ($135 CDN in 1978), and it is the gun I use the most. Can't beat that.

Baikal o/u and sxs with double trigger are way more reliable than the 80% of others in the market, even some English handmades. You will never see, a well treated baikal in a gunsmith, also avoid automatic injectors and interchangeable chokes. They have from production */*** barrels but actually they are 1.5/3.5. They shoot very well, they are cheap, reliable and because off the weight, have low recoil. Some experts they say that they are the perfect survival shotguns. Here in Greece, we have baikals, from the 60's with ten of thousands rounds, and the locking system is like new. You should know that some English men, they put a 20gauge and a 12 gauge cartridges both in the barrel and shoot, in a laboratory of course. The only shotgun that wasn't destroyed was the o/u baikal, not berreta, not benelli, not browning, not even the English brands. For what? 500 euros? The same gun, with the two cartridges was shootable after the test. So don't be so snob

Both me and my old man have Baikals, 12. gauge and not lackered though.
You know those dreams where you're supposed to count sheep... Well i could count roe deers, hares and capercaillies that's been laid down by these guns well into the next week. True enough they are not exceptional over engineered German craftmanship. But that is also exactly why i own one, not for the flair at some skeet shooting contest, over a daily fox hunt with stiff upper lips. But as a reliable work horse out in the wild. And for that purpose, they are great.

I only started shooting in April 2023. I own 2 old Baikals, an UO and a SBS like the one in the video. As an entry level gun the price could not be beat…..I paid £90 for the UO and £35 for the SBS, which had a very slightly rattle due to a loose joint. I have now fixed this. Both guns work as I would expect a shotgun to work. What I have discovered though is there is a lot of brand snobbery emanating from people who own a more refined and expensive gun. They are virtually sneered at. This is quite natural for the human species, it happens with all things, whether it be cars, motorcycles (Japanese motorcycles were treated the same after the 2nd World War in the US), this snobbery is not limited to Baikal shotguns……back in the 1970s and 1980s anything from what we used to call the ‘Eastern Block’ (one of the communist Russian governed countries) was viewed as cheap, nasty, and ‘agricultural’, unrefined. Lada cars from that period for example, or Zenit 35mm film cameras……Now as a Baikal owner, having used mine for trying to bust clays and shoot Wood Pigeon on some farmland, I tend to agree with the points raised in the video. Let’s be honest, they are basic, cheaply made, but solid reliable guns. That’s it. Nothing more can be said really. But please don’t sneer at them. They are what they are, and have undoubtedly enabled many many people to enjoy shooting over the decades for not a lot of money. If I had money to invest in a gun then yes, I would be buying a Baretta Silver Pigeon 3, or similar very pretty gun, with nicely figured walnut and hand chased graving of Woodcock, duck, Labrador, whatever…... But I don’t have a lot of money. What I have had over the last few months is a lot of fun……as a child born in the late 60s I can remember the Cold War very well, and the fall of the Communist State in the USSR….there were a lot of people in Russia, and there probably still are, that do not live the comfortable Western lifestyle we are so accustomed to…..they live on the breadline, and some rely on these guns for pot hunting on a daily basis. Let’s look at the gun for what it was intended for. Not the English Gentry…..but the down to earth Russian bloke living in a wooden house with no central heating, not much income, and the need to supplement his meagre diet and income with a few birds and bunnies with a cheap, reliable shotgun. And also to deter the odd wolf and bear when they meet. I get a bit miffed when people look down their nose at mine. They can get stuffed, I love mine to bits purely because they were both so cheap…..refined they are not, however my SBS does have a cheap walnut stock…..it’s not beech, the majority of them were beech, but this one is definitely Walnut, just a fairly plain bit. And they do what they are supposed to do. They go bang. 💥💥 😂

I think a lot of people forget that in the UK, firearm ownership is probably really difficult and expensive, so Brit gun owners probably tend to choose highly crafted, handmade hunting shotguns because that's probably the one gun they're allowed to own, and if you're buying a gun in Britian you're probably rich af anyways, so they tend to look down on utilitarian mass produced pieces like that Baikal.

Izhak 58, knows how many of them have faithfully served russian hunters for decades and continues to serve...has a circulation of more than 1 360 000 units, will remain forever in our hearts, reliable, profitable, warming the heart a simple hunter, a laborer from the factory and the engineer of design bureau, the eternal ensign and general of the army and experienced fishers in the distant taiga zaimka...
And now they are sold in large quantity changing, 2-3, and even more owners, depending on the sound for the price 5 000 - 20 000 rubles (45-200 pound sterling).

To be honest, Baikal shotguns, particularly the IJ-27 (MP-27) are absolutely staple firearms amongst hunters and farmers in Russia (yes, I live here). They absolutely work, I just saw an old IJ-27M the other day. The finish has seen better days, but it is in perfect running condition. These shotguns are tools, designed to get the job done consistently with little fuss.

I have a Ruger Vaquero 45lc and a Marlin 30-30 but I didn't have a Coachgun which is needed to compete so I have been looking for one. I did my homework and to my surprise I was told to buy a Baikal instead of a Stoeger by the oldtimers! I was told by experts that the Baikal's were Tanks and actually last longer so today I purchased a .12 gauge SxS model 43 I think? I was not misinformed thank god. Great Tank of a gun. I would recommend this Shotgun to others.

This was the first gun I ever bough, used my first ''student loan'' check at the age of 16, we could buy a shot gun in Norway at that time no questions asked as long as you were of age ''16''. I carried this gun in the mountains of Norway for years, in all kinds of weather condition from -20 to +25. This shot gun held up in all this conditions and the shots I missed was not because of the gun. It is not a match grade, and never ever tried to pretend it is. It is a tool, if you like, and it does the job very well. If you know anything about Norway, you understand hunting the mountains is like being on a Motorcycle hill climb event, bring your Ferrari and see how far you get before it is totaled. Now I have more handguns and rifles that I can count, but no shotguns, actually, but I bought my son a stagecoach shotgun that is very nice, open hammers of course. I gave my Baykal to one of my nephews, something I regret, since my daughter now took her hunting education and needed a shotgun, would have been nice to hand her my LADA.

Pre 90's, pre 80's Soviet shotguns were much better in quality then. One who made reject in that era would quickly get into trouble. :D Nowadays IZH-43s are much less durable than old IZH-54s, IZH-58s and so on. Also old Tula TOZ series were great guns. They had quite some external hammer shotguns too. In the old socialist era in Hungary not many people could get a rifle (only people "close to the fire" if you get what I mean). So the shotgun must used as a rifle with slugs for wild boar. Certainly it is not allowed to shoot any kind of deer in Hungary with shotgun slugs so hunting deer was only for the upper class back than. So shotguns with slugs were the "rifles" of the lower class hunters and those old Soviet/Russian shotguns did it very well. Many of them had the Greener lock as well. There are some older Hungarian guys on local forums they knows much about the real old Russian shotguns. I surprised how many types they had and many had higher quality (for the upper class, certainly). But the average ones were built to last as a tool at the taiga. And they did actually.

I have a 1924 Ithaca Flues, a Spanish AYA Model 300 made some time in the 1950's, a brand-new Stoeger Uplander, an L.C Smith Field, now I need to get my hands on a Baikal.

Hi all. I just picked up at a gun show a Baikal 410 Over/Under used for $500. I think maybe I paid too much huh?
It is in very good condition and is still quite stiff in the action.
I don't think it has had very many rounds shot through it as the inside of the barrel shows no signs of wear. ( I mean the inside of the barrel is still like a mirror) no lines made from exiting pellets.
I'm thinking that the 410 round is quite expensive and not all that good at trap...maybe it's still quite new.
Oh well, I always wanted a 410 so now I have one.
What does the Gun Shop World think?

You probably bought one by now? Shame because I've got a N.K 58MA side by side 12 bore Baikal which I've had donkey's years. It's hardly been used because I get more fun with the 22. A shooting teacher expert once said. Your shooting with that Baikal 1/2 & full choke is quite surprising. Have a shot with my Browning. I must say it felt lovely. When I shot with it at clays I felt as if nothing could possibly fly over me without dropping. Is it right no shotguns are allowed to be posted to the US of A?
I'm seeling mine because I just don't go any more as I'm 80 and just about shot.
