I have carried a 5.5" Espada for almost 5 years now. However, I always have a smaller blade for work/utility purposes.
Even my keys I carry in a way that I can pull them out and use them defensively. I carry my Espada as a last ditch effort. Plus, I love it. Fits my hand perfect. Knife friends always get a kick out of me flicking it out of my pocket. Only have had to deploy it one time in self-defense. He ran. Fast.
So, yes, carry big blades but be aware of your surroundings. You don't always have to use a knife to save your life. Used correctly, knifes will save your life. Use them wrong, they can ruin it.

Well said! I feel like keep a big knife for last ditch defense and a smaller blade for utility tasks is the way too go. Plus you can save the edge on the bigger knife for when it really counts. Usually I just Cary a Leatherman micra or Swiss army knife for all my small utility stuff.

    • @michaelr7254

@user-lb7lu2sl1w Thank you. Would like to add a few things. Taste in knives has obviously evolved since then. Think we all have. Still get a Cold Steel from time to time, though. One thing I forgot to mention is self-defense. You never want to be what is known as the "initiatial aggressor" because then, you'll lose your rights to self-defense. Whichever knife you use will be shown to a jury. So, picture you defended yourself and your family with a Swiss Army knife or a standard issue KA-BAR. Now, imagine, let's say, a Rajah 2. Now, I'm not bashing Cold Steel one bit. They have made and continue to make good stuff that people should try at some point. However, their large and XL line is a bit much at times. Support and believe in the 2nd Amendment as much as anyone else. But, I also believe in knowledge. Because knowledge beforehand is always better. It's definitely better to be tried by 12 in a courtroom than carried by 6 out the front door of a church.

Pulling 10 knives out of your pocket to prove a point is the most effective argument ever! Adding up 3x 3 inch blades and justifying it makes you even greater! Having about 30ft of blade on you at all times is the cherry on the cake!

I carried a 4.7" blade for a long time as a kid until I was attacked and stabbed in the stomach.
I lost the fight because I didn't have the reach to keep him at bay. The attacker (whom I later met face to face and became good friends with) said, "I ain't scared of a knife as long as mine is bigger" so he saw me as an easier target.
I took it to heart and immediately got my lifelong baby, a 12" Hunter bowie made of the highest quality steel I could buy.
Never had to use it because the two times I got mugged after that i just had to let them see it and they ran.
However after some time I got a thigh sheath + tourniquet set to carry my Recon Tanto (of course from cold steel).
Now I have a massive knife on my dominant leg and a smaller, easier to draw, blade on my off thigh.

Thank you - Living in Chicago has its drawbacks for a knife guy like me and ironically (as I always followed the laws) I just found out two weeks ago that 2.5 inches are the max blade I can legally carry. Wow! That was a shock sitting with my 3.75-inch folding blade in my pocket (fortunately it was a friend informing me of this rather than the authorities). Well, being one to follow the laws (now that I know it), i've been racking up the hours reviewing and trying many 2.5-inch knives, and while they will never feel the same as the larger ones, I was impressed with the many choices and reasonable handle sizes available and am experimenting with them now. - While disappointed in the revelation of this long-standing law and also my ignorance of not knowing, I found great Joy in watching your excellent video and reasonings for embracing small knives, and will now look at them in a more positive view thanks to your video.

Two things I'd like to add. The first thing is that fairly regularly when I pull out a knife to do some small job thing, people in veritably ask the tired old question of , " why do you carry a knife ?". My standard answer is; " why don't you ?". I tell them to carry a knife for one month without running to get one, if you even can. I follow up in a month and every one of them I challenged just pulled it out to show me they still do, and put it back into their pocket. I nod, say nothing keep going.
Secondly, I was working a flea market selling antiques, and I got a drunk belligerent man who I politely asked him to leave my booth and area, (there wasn't anything he could afford anyway). Well it seems apparent I probably should've ignored him but I couldn't afford for him to break my stuff.
Off topic, a second, a girl stated that she wished she could afford to buy all the cool things I had for sale, and I told her that I agree, I wish I could afford them too. I could afford to buy them to sell them, but couldn't save any of it. I did own them for a very short while I guess, but could not get attached to them. I also couldn't show up to do a show with the same old stuff. So I dumped at the price I paid first and looked for something else every month.
Back to our drunk friend. He starts cussing and stumbling around and with the last bit of his diatribe he says " I'm gonna get my fuckin gun." ..I very calmly stated " do you think Horace Smith and Dan Wesson got rich off selling one fuckin gun ? And what makes you think you're gonna make it to yours ? ". I'm not saying that is caused it but his face went white/green, he ran over to the fence line puked and left.
I carry both but sometimes a knife will allow you to close distance and you can stay on top within 21 feet, in a self defense situation. Lynn may even have a segment on this, but as a first timer I don't know? I'm older and slower now , so my tactics change to fit my ability. I've carried a knife since before I can remember. I always had it in my pocket, and it was my grandfathers jack knife. I owned others, but even in my day pulling out a ten inch blade would spin heads, but not like today. I carried a knife always and in high school I carried a buck 110 on my hip. No one thought anything of it. I was hunting at fourteen and typically carried a shotgun. To a local farm I had permission to hunt from the farmer. I'd see ten people on average who would stop and ask " what time is dinner ?", "what you going after ?", etc. I had a friend, I went with every chance we could, like a few days every week. One time I walked to a small country store type thing, and my mother got (three) phone calls from concerned neighbors about me walking up the road because of a dangerous "S" curve by an old cemetery. Two fourteen year old boys walking down the road with shotguns three or four times a week, raised no alarm. However one walk up the road and concerned citizens came out of the shadows to try to save me. What the hell shifted this paradigm ? I was off grid "so to speak, for several years after my military service and was astounded by the fear to even show your weapon in public, that the general population has. WYF? !!! If anything, looking at all that has happened maybe it's time to send your children to school packing ? I wore a buck 110 to school every day at sixteen years on, and carried a small pocket folder too. No one said anything. I used my Buck knife daily, and sometimes many times a day. my father told me that he would take a shotgun to school and leave it in the principals office and grab it on the way out to go hunting. Same thing with the movie theater in the managers office. He was like 8-10 years old. If anything I believe we have made it so scary to see a gun that people freak out. Everyone should carry ! Ask the founding fathers. Stop with the dumb shit. We were a more polite society when everyone is packed. Go beyond the second amendment to the writings of our founding fathers. History is repleat with examples to guide you to a better understanding of why they added it to our bill of rights. Carry a knife, because you will find it so very useful. Carry a firearm, because it is your right and duty, just like voting. ' The Wild Wild West". "Billy the kid" who you all must have heard of, killed four men. Four. Some drug dealer in Chicago will rack up a higher body count than that today. I don't know how, since guns are barely legal there, and you have to jump through a lot of hoops to get a permit, so it must be the safest city in our country right ? All these killings are bullshit and we can only surmise that the media is making stuff up, or thugs are targeting victims who they know have no self defense weapon whatsoever.
People ! Stand up for your rights or you will lose them all. The bill of rights is not the government giving these rights to us. These are rights given to us by God. The constitution is only a directive demanding that we shall not fear the government coming to take us and control us. The Wild West isn't so wide as the stories we hear. The future isn't so bleak that we should give control to our government . They cannot take our right to speak freely, they cannot take our right to defend ourselves both foreign and domestic, well ,they are trying and succeeding with the unconstitutional (red flag laws). We have the right to not be tortured. The right to not being confiscated and the government gets your stuff ( wait, I think that already happens). The government cannot take these rights, but we can give them up. For what ? A little temporary security ? Put some real thought into what you are casually giving up.
Lynn has the right idea ! Carry all that you can. Legally. Thanks Lynn for. a great , informative , vision of " ready for anything " lifestyle and sharing this with us. I'm gonna rethink some things for sure.

See, I used to carry smaller knives because people criticized me for "overkill".
Then I got stabbed. I drew my own knife and I lost that fight and had my gut almost torn open.
So I got a 12" hunter's Bowie. Since I've had it I have been mugged twice. Both times I was able to get the mugger to fuck off because I had 9" advantage and I wasn't about to be attacked again. The second time I got mugged after getting my knife, I got a Recon Tanto from cold steel and I now carry my bowie on my left hip (hung on my belt) and my Tanto on my right thigh (sheath rig + tourniquet set)
Fuck what people think. Fuck not being able to fight back with MY weapon of choice because people think that I dont have the right to have a weapon suitable to my training and combat style.

I've hurt a lot of bad people in my past and am very vigilant in protecting myself as I am almost always with my daughter and I really hate getting that comment "why do you always have so many knives?" My answer is always "because I cant remember the faces of the bad guys I have hurt but I know they remember me"

    Fun fact:
In Germany there is no blade length restriction on folding knives.
As long as you can not open it with one hand. It just has to be a two-handed folder (that can also lock). If it is a onehanded folder, then it can't have a locking mechanism that locks the blade as you open it. I see market nieches.

I'm guessing Lynn and I probably differ on a few key political issues, but neither of us would ever care to have those discussions for the exact same reasons, so I bet we would get along great. I just like this guy. I like a lot of things about him. I love his knives. I'm sure people have reasons why they aren't keen on him, and I've heard the stories, but they still couldn't change the fact that I am a fan of his, and I'll buy his products, and enjoy his videos and lessons for as long as he keeps makin em.

safest to say is, have a multitude of blades for the job. Lynn has swayed me that if i truly want a knife for defense of my life that a large knife is needed. im working on the collection now. but i dont need to pull out a 6" ti-lite to cut a sticker off the paper tube or cut a twine. for those i have my "PC" 3 inch blade.
