    If Larry Bird ever cared about stats which he never did ....his numbers would have been a hell of a lot higher! You only need to watch a game or 2 and you can see Larry Bird feeding the ball to his teammates on a regular basis.
    Why?... because he was a team player ....which is more than I can say for some basketball players (LJ) these days! If a player stays in the league long enough ....they're going to rack up the points! Especially if they're a stats chaser....🤔

    • @MightGuy-dp7lo
      @MightGuy-dp7lo Місяць тому +3

      100%. People forget alot current star players sit out games when there sore, hurt etc. Bird never sat out. He constantly played injured which also impacts players numbers. Not to mention the numerous rule changed that all favor the offense. It easier then ever to pad stats.

    • @Gracie-SavedByGrace
      @Gracie-SavedByGrace Місяць тому

      Agreed! Can you imagine one of today's "stat padder stars" staying on the bench if they were told they were one steal away from a quadruple double with a quarter left in the game?
      When Bird was told that he just said, "I've done enough damage."

      LBJ def excels at not remaining upright when anyone comes near him. He's also incredible at bulldozing his way toward the basket and clearing out a path with his shoulder, forearm, or ass. Later in his career he's also the go-to-guy for missing mid-range shots. Reliable!!!

    LeBron had to chase rings to get them on super teams. Larry made everyone around him better. Bird built his team from the ground up. LeBron went to play with other superstars to win his chips. Larry Bird is THE best forward ever, period!

    It was a much harder league in Birds era. LeBron cries and flops every time he gets touched. Birds era threw punches and kept on playing. The league is soft today. Anyone who will dispute that is delusional.

    Going from a 29 win team to a 60 win team his rookie year tells you why he is the GOAT
    Nobody in the history of basketball could have done what he did.
    It doesnt matter what the numbers are, its the impact on team, leadership, clutch. The league was different then, 3 point line wasnt used much. He couldve been a ball hog and scored more points but he didnt need too. Plus add in his trash talking and tell you where he was gonna shoot it last second and down 1 or 2 points wven in the playoffs...6-0 vs MJ
    LeBron is great but not at LB level...plus he skipped teams to win

      That year really illustrates how much he brought to the game even without scoring - I think his rookie avg was "only" ~20/game. But he was everywhere doing everything.

    Great breakdown and fair, thoughtful reaction. I respect the argument for Lebron as the best small forward ever. I believe Bird was better during the prime 9-10 years of his career, but you can't disregard Lebron's longevity. Don't get me wrong - if I was starting a team and could take rookie Bird or rookie Lebron, I'd take Bird every day of the week and twice on Sunday. KD isn't even in the conversation for me.

    LeBron is your goat and that's cool. Let me ask you this though. Does LeBron even make it to year 10, let alone be in the goat conversation, if he has to play with the injuries Larry played through? That's why Larry will always be my #1. That back injury alone would make others not named Kobe retire. Yet Larry still consistently played at a Hall of fame level even in that much pain.

    When it comes to best shooter, best passer, best small forward rebounder, best clutch, best killer instinct and toughest of all time, Bird is almost always in the coversation. Is Lebron? Lebron is obviously the top scorer of all time and in the conversation for best assists for a small forward. Thats all.

    Durant is a great scorer, and very good at everything else. I think he belongs in anyone's top 20, maybe higher. Bird had a little extra - hard to define, but the stats in this video illustrate that. Kareem explained it once - Bird just had a way to be in the right place at the right time, nearly always. That's how a "non-athlete" had so many rebounds and steals. He disrupted the other team's offense while capitalizing on any defensive lapse. Being a great shooter makes that easy, but he also never missed a chance to hit a teammate who's defender was sleeping or out of position. After his heel surgery and back problems, he still scored like Durant (slightly fewer points, but more efficient), but that other stuff was gone - defense takes too much energy and pounding. Davis has arguably been the Laker's most important player for a while now. Neither he or Lebron seem capable of putting the team on their back and winning a series despite having a solid team around them now. The Denver blow-out in the playoffs should have been embarrassing.

  • @trekkiexb5
    @trekkiexb5 Місяць тому +1

    KD is many things, but he isn't a leader, and that takes him off the list.
    As for LeBron...he is a very amazing player, but he is one of the most inconsistent players out there. He CAN be a great leader, He CAN be a great defensive player, he CAN be a great scorer, He CAN be a great facilitator, but its a dice roll when that happens. If LeBron is the ONE, why only 4 rings in 21 years?
    IF he is such a great leader, why didn't he take the Cavaliers further the first time around? Why jump from the Heat? Why is the Lakers are just an okay team?
    Larry played for ONE team and delt with who ever showed up at camp as teammates and TURNED them into champs. That's Leadership. He had control on one maybe two players on joining the Celtics (Bill Walton and maybe DJ).
    It is the same argument I have for MJ (the leadership. MJ may be a bad leader, he wasn't inconsistent and gave 110% EVERY GAME. Likewise Bird (with the excellent leadership). But LeBron, some days he just looks like he doesn't care. Like the L and W don't show up on his check. You can be the GOAT, but if you sit on your laurels most of the time and blame others for your issues and be non motivated, not only does it shows to your teammates, it says no matter how GOAT worthy you are technically, you are NOT.
    That Killer instinct that I feel Duncan was the last player to have it (could be wrong, but I believe that was the line between mostly killers to mostly floppy) and basketball has paid for it.

    People are products of the era,some refuses to admit anyone of another generation doing better than the current generation. Longevity is a plus, saying that. If you have more time doing whatever, yeah you're more like to do better in stats.

    Larry is absolutely the best all-around basketball player in history and no one else is really close. His highlights are extremely misleading because he was a continuous highlight every single game. And he was almost as good on defense as he was on offense and was the best team defender since Bill Russell. I watched all those Celtics games on WSBK 38 from Boston.

    Birds rookie yr he didnt have Mchale til 1980 & who was a back up player, Parish 1980, DJ 1983 , Ainge 1981 or Walton 1985. So Bird turned it around as a rookie without them & the very 1st away game as a rook, Bird told the Vets: Im never going to get u any water or carry 1 bag ever. Bird was a Leader since High School. In College Lead the Sycamores to their 1st & only NCAA finals at 33-0 losing to Magic & the Spartans, the start of their rivalry. If Bird hadnt finished his last yr in College, tho signed with the Celtics, would there be the most famous sports rivalry?
    Bird & Magic saved the NBA. But I think Bird deserves the most credit. Bird & the Celtics had a fierce rivalry with other greats as well, like Dr J & the 76ers.
    Watch at 6:37 Bird tips the ball out of bounds after making the shot. Lol.
    Brons had a longer career and is great with better stats. Bird didnt care about stats. In 3 quarters was 1 steal from a quadruple double & said he did enough damage. Bird was about the W & making his team mates as well as his opposition better. Taught the Pistons to play ever second of the game. Bird schooled everybody. Without Bird there wouldnt be an NBA.

    Regardless of current players... He was better in the league as it was. Everything keeps scaling up. Things have changed. Longevity can't exist like it did then because they push the players way harder now because they have a shelf life, which is sad. Let your stars shine for years and... wait, people are getting bored? Push them harder, we'll find new ambition from more kids that'll break themselves to be better.
    It's the nature of professional sports, money. It creates a push for people willing to break themselves to be the best, even if they might not have as long of a career, because they'll make more money in todays sports economy.

      I'm 58 and agree with most of what you said. Not really an "all out war" but the defender certainly had a right to hold a position or lane, with strength. Also could use hands a bit. I think Kobe was the ultimate GOAT whiner and he is responsible for the non-defense of today.

    You are saying LeBron #1 and maybe Durant #1 alltime? Where is MJ on your list? Larry is phenomenal but it's not even close compared to MJ. MJ is by far the most complete player to ever lace them up playing in the league when clotheslining a player was a common foul. However, I firmly believe that the most valuable players of all time are Magic and Larry. NBA finals was an afterthought (and not played live on TV) prior to their arrival. I wonder what the NBA would be right now if they didn't come along when they did and also join the top two franchises in the league.
