Did you ever do Bird's retirement night ceremony? (About 2:12:00)
Or the tribute at ISU, moderated by Jackie McMullen, when his statue there was erected? (I particularly like the part with his coach from grade and high school.)

Bird is the GOAT, he has beaten EVERY HOF he faced. He was ROY, 3x consecutive MVP, the only person to do so since the merger. He was coach of the year and executive of the year. He was unselfish. He played through injury that would have others retiring.

I agree with your point about Bird giving 100%. His teammates knew it, and the organization knew it, and, just as importantly, the fans knew it. He earned his money.

Bird is my favorite player. You can argue Goats, you can argue eras, whatever.
Bird is my favorite because he never gave up. His team could be down but he never quit. He gave everything he had every night. After he had severe back problems he still played his heart out.

MJ is the greatest ONE ON ONE player ever. Period. Larry Bird is the greatest team player playing the actual game ever. Period. He played the whole game. Scoring, rebounding, assists, setting picks, steals, and blocks. And, he did it all throughout the entire game. Especially in clutch time.

I 100% agree with this. Jordan, and probably even LeBron are better 1 on 1. But end of the day, basketball is a team game, and the player who is amazing on his own AND can elevate his team to all be better is the better basketball player

My FAVORITE player is Bird. One thing I think is so overlooked are his leadership qualities - he led quietly by setting the example for his teammates and without him we might not have several of them as HOF'ers. And you will not hear one of them talk disparagingly about him because they KNOW. Enjoyed the video, thank you.

Magic and Bird had such a huge influence because at the time college ball was the more popular. A lot of NBA players were all about themselves and their stats were the reflection of that.
Then Magic won a chip his rookie year and Bird won his first the next. David Stern the basketball commissioner was brilliant and negotiated television coverage on Tuesday and Thursday nights. This was the beginning of television money and the public getting to follow games in real time.

Larry is better because he could do everything Magic could, but also be an offensive threat out to the 3 point line and rebound like an animal. Also, Magic had Kareem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MANY PEOPLE CONSIDER KAREEM THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME!

Towards the beginning you asked why it was Larry and Magic that saved the NBA. And to that I would tell you to watch The Courtship of Rivals. Its a documentary about Bird and Magic and their impacts on the league. Basically, white Americans rallied behind Bird who went to the Celtics and had the whole gritty hard worker feel to it. Contrast that with Magic who embodied and led the Lakers to be called "showtime." So it was two different worlds colliding and it made for a fantastic rivalry. It ended with Magic and Bird becoming the best of friends.

Bird and Magic were polar opposites with almost an identical basketball skill set. Two sides of the same brain. I think Bird had a bit higher basketball IQ, he was physically and mentally tougher. They belonged to the two most popular teams. They were so comparable.

Bird > Magic because Larry could do everything Magic could, and be a better shooter and defender on top of that. Probably the most concise way of putting it.

I was a teenager here in North Carolina at the time Larry and Magic came into the league. I think what helped THEM be the ones to save the league was their style of play. Not only were they superb individual players in pretty much all statistical metrics, they were masters at making their team mates better, which in turn, made their whole teams better. No two guys in the history of basketball, IMO, did it quite as well as Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. Plus the 1980's rivalry between the Boston Celtic and Los Angeles Lakers were off of the charts and (IMO) the best rivalry in sports history. Those big finals games were sports masterpieces. I do not think race had anything to do with it. People just didn't have the obsession with race like they do now. Just two great players going at it.
I have as my top 3 of all time; #1 Michael Jordan, #2 Larry Bird, #3 Magic Johnson. I give Larry a razor thin edge over Magic because of Larry's shooting, defense, and having the best basketball IQ of all time. If someone had Magic ahead of Larry, I wouldn't have a problem with it. Magic is the best point guard of all time, created the biggest mismatch in NBA history as a 6'9" point guard, and even though Larry was an incredible passer, Magic was a little better. But overall, Larry had just a little more. Great video and great job.

Many reasons Bird and Magic saved the NBA.
    1. Team mindset
    2. Flashy passes/play style/great basketball
    3. East Coast vs West Coast
    4. Established rivalry carried over from college
    5. Black star vs white star (sigh. When will Americans ever get over this?)
    6. No drugs. No steroids. Non-controversial, hard working guys leading teams with the same character and winning mindset from the top down, so the organizations they went to helped, especially since they were the Lakers and Celtics, already iconic with a decades old rivalry thanks to Bill Russell and Jerry West.
Oh and Larry being non athletic? LOL compared Dr. J or Michael Jordan, maybe. He was about as athletic as Magic (he was not a high flyer or any more acrobatic than Larry, watch both of them dunk, they get up about the same). He was certainly far more athletic than any regular dude on the street, so this is a relative thing.

East vs West, White vs Black, skill set vs. skill set, it was largely a media creation. I remember the days when I would turn on the small black and white TV in my room after my mom went to bed after the news at 11:30 and watch UCLA's Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar), Sidney Wicks, Curtis Rowe coached by John Wooden. It was exciting stuff but no one was watching and no one was watching after they moved on to pro sports. The media has no shame whatsoever, they have been pitting black against white for dollars and power way before I was in my teens and they are still doing it. Bird and Magic came along at the right time and, they had the goods to deliver. It is to their credit that they could care less about what the media was up to.

Bird and Magic came in together and they knew each other as their greatest rival. They KNEW it. They respected each other for what they did. They saved the NBA because they took the all time NCAA tv ratings with them to the NBA. They had a built in storyline from the college tournament. The networks had the storyline of black white even though the two of them had no racial animosity towards the other. The tv networks leaned in to black/white. They raised the bar from individual greatness to team greatness. Celtics/Lakers was the NBA for a decade. Without them, the league could have struggled on life support to get new viewers until Jordan came along. He built on the foundation they laid down. The road to greatness went through them.

  • @trekkiexb5

Larry Bird could do everything that Magic could do at nearly the same degree, but he could shoot all the way out to the 3-point line and he was a better defender than Magic. Rings are nice, and that gets you in the door of the GOAT debate but those are team awards, though an individual might have been important or vital to that win. With the GOAT debate, individual awards achievements and abilities have more weight.

I have three GOATS, Russell at center, Bird at forward and Magic at guard. Between Bird and Magic, I'd take Bird because, although they were both great all around and had a lot of the same strengths (and BTW I believe that Bird was at LEAST as good of a passer as Magic was), Bird was better at creating his own offense all the way out to the three point line, and Bird was better in the clutch.

When Bird & Magic came on the screen most (not ALL) players were all about themselves and hooked on drugs BAD. It was terrible to watch pro basketball! Most players were not about the team!
So when Magic and Bird started playing they brought excitement to the game back because they were hard playing and tough! People started coming back to the stadiums and packing it just to watch them. They were good guys who were clean (drug free) and knew every aspect of
the game! They are the ones who brought people back and saved the NBA with their exciting play! Three point line didn’t exist when Magic and Bird were in college but they were already shooting that distance without it!
Unlike todays NBA, they played hurt! Today if they have a hangover or hangnail, they won’t play. They are going to take the NBA down again because of their egos and lazy playing. Magic and Bird brought the art of hard playing.
I’m from Indiana and grew up when Bird was growing up! He is simply a good guy from here that loved his family and wasn’t Mr. Show (except on the court), lived simply like we’re taught in Indiana. So here we were proud that he came from here, that he succeeded, and that he was never ashamed to be a Hoosier! Boston had a different type of love I think! It was more about what he could do for them, like the excitement for example. Just simply a different kind of love. So I think that Bird was and is STILL loved more by the Hoosier State then by Boston!

The reason Bird was able to save the NBA has multiple reasons. Yes, he was a great white player that players at that time admitted that was needed to bring that group of fans back to the sport, and the rivalry with Magic was a huge part, but one big factor that most don’t think about is television. The eighties brought in cable tv, which was becoming a norm in homes at that time. With cable came the introduction of ESPN. Sports was thrown into people’s homes against their will. A huge factor that assisted in its growth and popularity.

If Bird could walk (and even sometimes when he couldn't) he was playing.
There was no load management, there was no injury excuses.
    Bird gave 1000% every game.
You watch these Bird video's where other players talk about him and time and time again he would tell his opponents the he was gonna wear them out.
Many of these same players have said that Bird might be more dangerous without the ball because he was constantly moving to make sure he was in the best position.
We have all seen the video of Bird diving for a ball and smashing is face into the court.
That was in the 1991 playoffs - Birds next to last season and his back was getting worse and worse.
If he hadn't dove for the ball nobody would have said a thing - but that was not how Bird played.
The after smashing his face into the floor he could have called it a night - but Bird doesn't do that.
He came back out and led his team to a win.
Nobody plays as hard as Bird did and nobody gives the effort that Bird did and he did it while being hurt.
Those are just some of the reasons that puts Bird among the top few players ever to play the game.
Lastly , if you were starting a team and had to pick someone to bring a certain mentality and understanding of the game, the player you would want is Bird.

The NBA had a bad rep after the ABA merger. Players that were greedy, selfish, and did drugs. Then there was a racial element. College Basketball is like college football is today: EVERYONE watched it! But here were 2 players, seemly the same except one could shoot and one was a better passer. Extremely smart. The colour of their skin was the major difference. They lit up the college scene. Plus the Cinderella story that was ISU... Not only did EVERYONE watched it, I mean EVERYONE, everyone was talking about it and everyone wanted to see them more. Like Caitlin Clark is doing for the WNBA today. So they followed these guys into the NBA, frustrated they could not see them very much, so the networks made the games revolve around the Lakers and the Celtics. When they finally met in 1984, it was an explosion of popularity of the NBA the likes that had never been seen. And the people stayed.
Jordan made it global, but the seeds were in place because of Bird and Magic. Without them, we would not be arguing Bron or Curry or even Jordan. They would not exist in today's basketball world. Because the NBA would not exist. Not Jordan. Not LeBron. Not even Dr. J. It was Bird and Magic.
FYI: That 1979 game made March Madness what it is today. While it existed, but not to the extent it does today. March Madness keeps college basketball alive today, despite all the 19-year-olds that seem to pop up in the NBA today.

Larry was very level headed all he wanted to win. There was also a vendetta he wanted to beat everyone. I believe Michael Jordan is the greatest of all time. However, Bird and Magic belong in the conversation. Other names who deserve consideration would be Kareem, Chamberlain, Russell and Lebron

Just a little story .. we had this goofy white boy kind of fat math teacher when I was a kid in high school and this is when bird and johnson were doing their thing. And this guy Doudy could shoot like Bird .. as kids were started calling him Math Bird .. and he was a big bird fan .. but the guy could just destroy anyone on the court .. with the threes and the rebound and i'm like WTF you are our math teacher !!! It was kind of epic. Cheers Doudy RIP you kind of sucked as a math teacher but you could hoop

Kareem was amazing but boring lol... Magic Johnson and Larry were extemely competitive and huge rivals. People love a rival story with two extremely passionate and competitive players. And as sad is it sounds im sure the fact that Larry was white made more white fans get more into the compitition (which is the mass majority of the population)
