I followed the Knicks during the 80's. I saw Bird 6 times a year against the Knicks plus a few other nationally televised games, so I'd say I averaged about 15 Bird games per season and I gotta tell you, he has no equals. There was so much that he did that never got on the scoreboard: diving and getting loose balls, tapping a loose ball to a teammate or tapping it away from an opponent, taking charges, setting picks, slapping a ball away from an opponent in order to cause a 24 second violation, causing 10 second violations, etc. I think he added 25-30 points a game to the Celtics doing stuff for which no stats were ever kept and no other player did as much for his team in that fashion. You just had to watch him play and be in awe of him.

I was lucky enough to have a seat behind their bench for a few years, and watching what he did out on the floor that would make your head spin was some of the most fun I've ever had watching someone display their skills. Every game, you would see him do not just ONE thing that would leave your mouth agape, but multiple things, and against players who were more physically talented than him. No one else even came close to him in that regard.

Living in Massachusetts, I was a huge Celtics fan in the 1980’s. Larry Bird was not only an unbelievable player, he was also unselfish with the ball. Pat Riley said if it is the last shot to win the game I want Jordan, if it was to save my life I want Bird. Bird had all the confidence in the world and was never shaken by high stakes. You can make different arguements for different players but Bird is always my favorite. His work ethic was outstanding. First one to the game, running the bleachers and shooting. His trash talk was the best, telling players what he was going to do before he did it. His passing is fantastic but his shooting was so good people forget about it. Bird was a great team player that cared about wining the game not his stats. The more you learn about Larry, the better you like him.

I got MJ, but Bird was his daddy. Nobody out hustled Larry Legend, not even Moses’s Sixers or the Bad Boy Pistons. My Sonics were a playoff caliber team his whole run and damn near every single game they played Boston, Bird found a way to make them look like the Washington Generals. I’m with Clayton on the Magic-Bird comparison, too. It’s a team sport and the other players matter. Kareem and Worthy were going to the Hall no matter where they played. Lots of love and respect for McHale and Parish, but can you say the same thing about them?

    • @juniorjohnson9509

Remember that the year before Bird joined the Celtics, they were a losing team that had resorted to selling lifetime passes for $1000 just to get people to go to their games. The year he came in, they got 35 more wins, and made it to the conference finals - something that hadn't done for years -and then won the Championship in his second season. Jordan had to wait until Larry retired to even make it to the Finals - he could never get past Bird and the Celtics. Jordan was very obviously a much more physically talented player, but he relied on that physical talent too much and didn't play as one of 5 teammates when on the floor. Larry made his teammates better simply because he played as 1 of 5 out there.

I mean finest is key. The lakers were average before magic came as well. They won 47 games because Kareem was there. Worthy wasn’t even close n the league yet, and they never had much success in the playoffs. Magic gets their and they immediately become champions. The Celtics at that point were rebuilding from their last finals run with cowens and Havlicek in 75. It’s not like they were just trash for the sake of trash. All of their best players aged out and retired. So of course they were gonna be that bad and a new star player would make them better. Not to mention mchale was a rookie and parish was still developing as he was only in his fourth season. Sure bird came into a worse situation but that doesn’t diminish how impactful magic was for his squad either. Both took their teams from not competitive to championship caliber immediately. If I remove Kareem they don’t make the finals but they definitely jump in success still.

Larry’s biggest claim to being the GOAT isn’t even a statistic. He played the last 7 seasons of his career with what his doctor called a “career ending back injury.” It’s damn near impossible to say who is the best, but one more argument for Bird over Jordan could be that Jordan NEVER made it pass Bird in the playoffs. And anyone that says Jordan didn’t have help yet, Bird had to beat the best without playing with any other “bests.” In an interview w former greats about “super teams”, Bird or Johnson (sitting side by side) said “I didn’t wanna play with the best (pointing to the other) I wanted to beat the best.”

When he first joined the Celtics, his new teammates at fist complained about how tough his passes were - until they realized that Larry was making the win easier for them.
Larry would still spin heads and dominate in today's NBA.

Great reaction to the one and only!! What many don’t know is Bird whole feel for the ball changed after college due to a severe finger injury suffered during a softball game before he even started playing in the NBA. His right index finger is shaped much like a boomerang, permanently bent toward his thumb at a 45-degree angle. Two operations have failed to straighten it; he can bend it only halfway to his palm. Ball never felt the same after that and yet he managed to accomplish all that and more! I recommend The Untold Story of Larry Bird which will help you see where gets the drive to play through things like you will see in the 5 Times Larry Bird Injured. Being 59 years old and having watched the game, rules and so forth evolve, I love having the discussion with someone claiming their man is the GOAT. Truth is that there will never be a greatest of "all" time. Each generation has and always will have a select few that are the greats. As physical conditioning, medicines, rules and other things change, the athletes also change. A perfect example is when I hear LJ fans clain he is "THE GOAT" is that as physical as the game was back in the early days he wouldn't survive. Bird could most likely play better during this era than LeBron in Birds era.

Bird would put up Wilt numbers if he played in this era where you are not allowed to touch anyone while they are trying to shoot. He would shoot well over 50% from 3 range in today's NBA. Easily. Just watch the film, how many times does Bird shoot with at least one if not two people right in his face. If Steph Curry Rules applied to Larry...forget about it. Larry Bird was not the player with the most style or the most athletic player by any means, but his knowledge of basketball and how to play it better than anyone is beyond measure. He knew how to get the absolute most out of his own body and talent and he knew how to get in his opponents heads like no other player to ever play the game. I personally do not think there is a true GOAT in basketball, but Larry is one of the absolute best players to ever play the game. The respect he had among the players of his day and even players of today who know the history of the game certainly put him among the best easily. The fact that during his retirement ceremony Magic called Bird the greatest basketball player ever, the fact that every player he played against has said they would rather play Jordan or someone else because he would force them to play the game differently and finally the simple fact that Michael Jordan never beat Bird in the playoffs, not one single game even, and had a losing record against him during the regular season puts Bird as the ONLY player Jordan never had a winning record against. I think those things say a hell of a lot about how good Larry Bird really was.

The "GOAT" debate has gone off the rails. I agree with you... that there were many great players in every era. But make no mistake: Larry Bird was a MONSTER in his. Absolute demon. The best player of the 80's. Remember, he had THREE MVP's in a ROW. Only Wilt and Bill can claim that too. But he was ALSO voted either #1 or #2 for 7 straight years. THAT is dominance of a decade.

MJ is the goat in the air but Bird is the goat on the ground! Bird the Greatest all-around player I have ever seen! Everyone always talks about the athleticism in the NBA today like that's the most important thing. I would put Larry Bird (Great Player) up against any "great athlete" you'd see Bird win! The key factor to consider is that Bird and his Celtics had to go through a gauntlet of great teams and player, many in the HOF, just to make it to the playoffs never mind the Finals. It was Bird’s Celtics that kept Jordan out of the finals for years. It was only after Bird and the other greats of the time got old or retired that Jordan was finally able to break through and win the championship. Jordan in the 90’s did not have the caliber of competition to contend with that Bird did. We never have to wonder how Jordan would have done against top notch competition because we actually witnessed it. Another thing to consider is that Bird played at a time when the rules were more lax and allowed teams to be more physical in the 80’s. Anyone remember the “Jordan Rule” where if MJ got into the paint you just took him to the floor? That’s a lot of what kept Jordan out of the finals. Put Bird in the NBA with today’s rules, where you have Lebron crying for a foul every time they brush against his jersey, he would just dominate. Nope. You really can’t appreciate just how good Bird was unless you were there. I grew up in Los Angeles and was a huge Magic and Lakers fan. But even I and several of my friends had to concede that Bird was better than Magic. I can only imagine what Bird would have done on a team with a Kareem and Worthy. No doubt in my mind, it’s close, but for me it’s Bird, Jordan, Magic, Kobe, and Kareem.

Lived in Beantown during that era, and had a seat behind their bench. Whenever the Lakers came to town we knew that it was going to be a war between the 2 best teams in the league - we knew that if even one Celtic wasn't at the top of their game that night, the Lakers could win. It was the most fun I've ever had watching ball games, and I really miss that level of play that is just not there today.

Both were individuals with different playing styles and both were amazing to watch. I do lean toward Bird but only because I was a Celtic fan back in his heyday. Not because I liked Bird so much, but because I'm from the East and rooted for them against teams like the Lakers out west. After my hometown got a team (Orlando) I started rooting for them, but they broke my heart and I stopped watching Pro basketball shortly afterwards. I'll just stick to my memories LOL

There are some things that stats don't tell. And still his stats are impressive considering the era.
EVERY game he did something to shook your head in disbelieve, and to HOF's way more athletic than him. He toyed with legendary teams like they were toddlers. He harassed players and coaches and then backed it up destroying their spirits. His basketball IQ was probably the highest ever. With slow pure fundamental basketball moves he embarrassed entire teams.

I mean Larry did have more Triple Doubles than Jordan ever did, and he was one steal away from a Quad-Double in the 3rd quarter of a game, taking himself out. He proclaimed that he had done enough damage. No Bird wasn't better than Jordan.. But Wilt Chamberlain was. He had an unofficial Quintuple-Double. Our only source of information for this feat is Harvey Pollack, a statistician working for the NBA since its inaugural year. Pollack recorded that Wilt finished the game with 53 Points, 32 Rebounds, 14 Assists, 24 Blocks, And 11 Steals. Pollack is also the only source for Wilt’s 100-point game, making the famous sign Wilt held in his post-game photo. Unfortunately, Pollack being the only source for these accomplishments means that the basketball world takes him at his word for it.
