Lenovo Legion Go Hands-on Review | ROG Ally Destroyer?

- Опубліковано 16 лип 2024
- The Lenovo Legion Go is a Windows handheld gaming console taking on Asus’ ROG Ally and the Steam Deck, with a UK price starting from £699. My hands-on review with the Lenovo Legion Go runs through the specs, FPS mode and main features - full unboxing coming soon!
Quick update: According to Lenovo, the custom power mode will actually max out at 25W TDP, and the 48W option here was a mistake in the early software. That includes when the Legion Go is plugged in.
The literally big deal with this gaming handheld is the enormous 8.8-inch IPS touchscreen, with 16:10 aspect ratio. It's bigger, sharper and smoother than the Asus ROG Ally - the Lenovo Legion Go boasts a QHD 1600p 144Hz screen.
This portable gaming handheld console is powered by AMD’s Ryzen Z1 Extreme, backed here by 16 gigs of RAM. Lenovo's Liquid Crystal polymer 79-blade fan keeps things cool and the Lenovo Legion Go sports a massive 49.2 Watt Hour battery. That's bigger than 40 Watt Hour cell of the ROG Ally, although that huge display may well sap the power faster - but you also have Rapid Charge Express.
What do you think of the Lenovo Legion Go handheld gaming console? Let us know your thoughts below, full review incoming!

Thanks for showing all the settings. Every other person with hands on time completely missed that! Good first impressions too.
No worries, Lenovo kindly let me stay for ages and talked me through all the various bits of Legion Space. Looks good so far, and definitely needed given Windows isn't the most friendly on a handheld
That is not Nintendo 3DS
You're the only reviewer so far that has any footage on "Legion Space"...
Looks like a steamos redesign
Yeah first time seeing this and it does look like a modified big picture mode of Steam. And I also see the stutters that I also on Steam Deck videos but it seems worse here. I guess early software?
@pranavdupati9164 Thought so too. If it ain't broke, don't fix it I guess...
I really like the SteamOS so I see this as a win.
@@pranavdupati9164 yep. looks promising.
As an Rog Ally user I have to give the Go it's well done. This device looks a great device for another twist on handheld pc gaming. The controller setup is very good especially looking at that fps mode. For me I personally prefer the Rog Ally but having more options on the market is only good for us gamers. Great to see others making a go of it and here is to hoping Microsoft are working on a gaming version of windows to help push these devices to the next level.
Now that so many of these Windows handhelds are emerging, it'd be a shame for Microsoft to not at least implement a gaming mode or something. Cheers!
LOOKS WAY to silly for a handheld, IMO the ROG ally is slightly to large to get comfortable in multiplayer shooters. Unfort mine has to be send in for the SD card issues
ROG KILLER
@@AmazonWebService98 this is why I dont want to get the ally. Dont want to deal with a sd card issue but then again the the Go doesn't have VRR . So im torn now lolz
Ally owner too, I love the bigger screen on the Legion but the Ally is quite portable and does look very sharp. I upgrade mine on day 2 with a 1tb SSD and it's been great having the extra storage. I did try a 256sd card and it got hot and went corrupt
This is probably going to replace my desktop, I also prefer this over a Laptop, you can just plug in a monitor with a dock station and you can carry it anywhere, good things are coming for handled devices, my last one was a Nintendo switch and the prices of their games are totally not feasible in a long term
Desktop gaming will be dead in 5 years
@@SWOTHDRAI Don’t think it’s going to be that quick but it’s definitely on its way out. But there is the chance of diminishing returns until we hit a plateau of power to performance in mobile form factors.
@user-gf3nq6eb7o huh, not until people like my brother in law who keeps buying gigantic cases, full atx mobos comes to the 21st century...it's all empty space in there but some ppl gotta just don't change
@@SWOTHDRA impossible to kill pc gaming. some of the games just dont run well on handheld or consoles. Devs voluntarily provide many customizable options for high tier pcs so that's a very bold and false claim tbh.
I have a high end build but I love xbox and ps5.. but if I can carry my pc on the go Legion Go seems like a more sensible option. I'll definitely consider this
@@SpeedNashHandled PC is fighting console affordability and exclusively, this is the last line of mobile gaming
This thing is sick -- More powerful and versatile than a tablet, more portable and specialised than a gaming laptop. All the little creature comforts are so nice; Thunderbolt, UHS-II MicroSD, the built-in mouse, the robust hinge and stand, the colour-accurate 144Hz QHD IPS screen.. Beyond gaming, it looks ideal for emulation and media consumption. Can't wait to get my hands on one, as I wasn't quite sold by the SteamDeck or ROG Ally.
As a Ally owner I'm very impressed with the Lenovo Go and love that the handheld wars are in full effect. Just means the options in 2-3 years are gonna be worth the upgrade at the time!.
No matter if u have a deck ally or a future lenovo go it's still mindblowing that we are in a era where we can play modern AAA games on the go.
That's not good
Hate opinions like this. "It's all great. Everything wins" 😑.
I'm torn between this and the Ally. I'm not sure how much I'll use the mouse but I still want it!! 😂🤣 love how sleek the Ally looks though as this looks soo big! How are temperatures?
@@simonh2011You should definitely chose legion go, Rog ally may have a very powerful specs but it has many default
Fast becoming one of my fave YT reviewers. Keep doing what you do!!
Can't wait for your full review...
Thanks for watching my Legion Go hands-on, hoping to get one in soon for a proper review. Quick update: According to Lenovo, the custom power mode will actually max out at 25W TDP, and the 48W option here was a mistake in the early software. That includes when the Legion Go is plugged in.
It was supposed to have VRR. Now its gone. Killed it for me im passing
Go read the posts on /r/ROGAlly there's several comments scattered all over stating that they're returning the Ally to get the Legion. There's one dedicated thread with more than half of the commenters stating the same. With the Ally selling 30% under expectations, and the mass wave of returns and pending class action lawsuit I believe ASUS will abandon the unit.
Thank you for telling me it costs £ 699 for the 512 Gb model, I’ll probably sell my steam deck and rog ally for it, I hope it supports microsfts pen sensitivity.
It a good device specially the mouse thing but vrr and big size, that’s mean ally still better in my opinion
@@jasuparis Don't think that's confirmed yet. Will have to wait to see
Great in depth video about lenovo legion go I'm actually conceding to buy this thing even tho i have a steam deck and rog alley right now that i love. It going to be a great Christmas this year!
Even though I absolutely love and pretty much daily use my Steam Deck, this seems like something to keep an eye out for.
It looks amazing, better performance, bigger screen, natively supporting Game Pass.
Yeah I love my sd but damn this looks so good, the screen and removable controls sold me
Same I love my SD but I hate we don't have an official xb app. Greenlight works sometimes and it never works remotely when im not home. Meanwhile my bro can remote play anywhere with his ally. I need me a dedicated windows device. Plus their screens are so pretty
you can just dual boot windows on the deck
Exactly what I was looking for in the handheld market this is an immediate buy for me
Good to hear!
why we know nothing 1600p is way to much for the z1, also battery life is my main consern because they did not let anyone unplug it also the controllers being removable they wont feel as sterdy as the decks controls and feel more like the switch and that thing is known for wobbeling
@itsquiwi8780 1600p allows for a steady 800p performance it'll downscale well with added for 3.0 sharpness and detail won't be an issue.
For older titles the device will be perfectly fine at 1600
The detachable controls are an option not mandatory but is a nice feature to have so I'm not sure what the point was? Either way this for me is exactly what I'm looking for a lot of features for the correct price and options as to how to use the device depending on play style etc.
Battery life is what it is with handheld devices it's not exactly something that the ally or deck is winning at but here with the legion there is an increase in capacity.
The cooling system is much better than others on the market
The legion has a power output greater than any other device to the Z1 extreme chip which will ensure better performance
This is not a solo gaming device it's an overall entertainment system people need to realise this.
@@stevenphoenix1005 yea, people like to ignore the fact it is a literal tablet. Even if it is a poor gaming experience which it won’t be you can use it for everything else like watching movies and doing windows stuff.
I'm probably go ally still sense same price and lenovo dosent come out till October if it's like anything like steam that only alow u play few games no ty
Best video for legion go answer all my questions I’m now sold on pre ordering
I'm getting this handheld. Looks very cool.
Early Christmas wishlist. 😊
Oh, no doubt.
Agreed
Good to see you doing a review for this master piece, the g.o.a.t ❤
Tbh i plan on getting this and using it too display my tv for watching shows and then portable gaming when needed. I will have too look into it more as i was comsidering a mini pc but this seems like a much better option.
I'm still torn between Legion Go and Rog Ally but I am definitely committed now to get one or the other. Lenovo has served me well on the gaming laptop front and I want something in this form factor that can still enjoy modern games, as my laptop didn't meet the graphics threshold for Starfield :(
I am heavily considering adding this as my second pc together with the steam deck.
It's kinda overkill but it may be worthwhile overall. One is windows, the other linux with more updates.
1600p 8.8” Screen > 1080p 7” Screen.
What’s the to be torn about?
@@bekrah5961 it's dumb for handheld af
Be patient, powerful Windows Handhelds are new, I bet next year there will be much better options available, based on the feedback of the recent releases.
Things like a bigger screen, kickstand, detachable controllers, attachable magnetic keyboardcover, 2TB SSD, more USB ports, XGM compatibility (not just ROG only) should be included for a premium version of a model.
Ally is going to have a higher TDP profile, better cooling, and VRR. I'm hoping they fix the VRR thing with the Go, but they're usign a tablet's screen that is originally made in a different screen ratio, so I'm not exactly optimistic.
This thing is lookin sweet i hope it doesnt have issues right off the line i usually wait a while so they can work out the kinks. Do you know if you can sync an xbox controller to the legion go?
It does destroy the Ally, if you drop the Legion go directly on top of it.
Je joue à des jeux vidéo sur mon téléphone
48w power limit is fantastic. I would use this plugged in 99% of the time anyway. Hopefully their cooling solution can keep up.
I agree. I only thought it had 25W
Definitely, the battery bypass feature should help and the fan seemed to cope fine with an hour-ish of gaming. Looking forward to really punishing it though!
yeah this alone made me regret getting the ally not gonna lie. i Use it plugged in 99 percent of the time. it does everything i want it to do though so ill just build a pc in the future
why did you buy a ally instead of a pc when you want a pc.... also you can use more watts just install a diffrent front end its ez@@JuneyP17
Defeats the purpose if you have it plugged in at all times.
Great review mate . The best ive watched so far . Question from what i see there is no VRR . Will this make a difference to the gaming to run smooth ? I mean im not sure how it qorks on a small screen but on my pc it makes a big difference
Oh man that's a Bummer if NO VRR and yes on a handheld it does make a Huge Difference in my Opinion
@@double-a83 yeah mate Lenevo have said there is no VRR . So that can be the deal breaker for me . Why they haven't added it i have zero idea but thats why I was asking does VRR make a difference on a smaller screen
@@wozzielfc401 doesn't make any sense what so ever not to add VRR Thanks for the info
Love you’re review but question are the controllers running or separate non rechargeable batteries or are they charged by the screen like the Nintendo switch??
Did Lenovo confirm eGPUs will be supported then?? Amazing news if so!
So it looks like the unit had was completely different from the ones the other reviewers got. Their max tdp slider only went to 25W and their menu didn’t show each controller’s battery. Lenovo’s press release says max 25W tgp.
Still love my steam deck but this looks like what the switch pro should or could be. That being said if this wasn’t like 950 ish over here I would have picked it up as a second handheld to my deck. It’s great seeing handheld gaming coming back and I can’t wait to see more in the future.
Definitely an impressive device, cheers for watching!
Nice kickstand
Already got my doe ready😊
I totally love the Legion Space Store arrangement section. But one con or just a matter of my question. Under Android Games, as mentioned for the Amazon Store access, is there similar connecting you to your Google Play Store titles, as to me it seems just crucial (I use that feature most of the time). Is there then?? TNX for an answer..
So it’s a Handheld and pad? Can it also be a PC with dock mode and does it run a. Or Al windows?
Did the joysticks have any issues with dead zones like the rog ally or were they supper accurate and responsive ?
A real beast 👌
As a Rog Ally user i will say this: the VRR is a really good function, and also the weight of the product ...the only downside of the ally are the controllers and the construction of the sd card. In this position i really believe that Lenovo is really too big too heavy and for a 1600p screen it really needs a vrr display
Yeah like wtf why on earth not VRR.
*Main Question:*
Which has more battery life cycle expectancy, the onexfly, lenovo legion go or the gdp win 4?
*𝖨 am looking for 6 things when it comes to buying a pc handheld:*
*•* Better and faster game performance(No flickering,stuttering or freezes,etc)
• Better battery output and capacity
• Better game input latency and better game performance latency
• Can be docked on a tv or a pc or both
• Non or minor bug issues for the pc handheld
*•* Gotta have a battery supporter, if i happen to use it a lot plugged to a wall socket or a power bank so it wouldn't wear and tear the component as fast.
𝖨 am also thinking of purchasing a container or casing for it that has drop, dirt, scratch, dust resistance and if possible water resistance if it exists.
I hope they can release a keyboard dock accessory. I'd love to have this as a little laptop.
Even better as a display cover as it is with the ROG Flow Z13
Never! It is designed to steal your thoughts
@@AdioAurel Yep this is exactly what I was thinking of.
Why not just buy a foldable Bluetooth keyboard most of the time you will have this in its case so you won't need the cover..
Better keyboard for less.
@@Antisocialnerd2 I like the GPD win max 2 as a device, but don't trust GPD as a company. This would be the next best thing, but also come in at a cheaper price.
Asus also raised their X13 and Z13 by $500 for the 2023 models pretty much taking them off the table for me.
So this with a keyboard dock accessory would be the perfect compromise for me.
Will we be able to get it in stores or is it a online only purchase or ????
tiny keyboard trackpad folio with custom magnetic pin attachment ipad style would be really nice for somebody who would like to travel with it without the controller attachments and use it more as a portable computer
omg u have it already awsome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Can controllers be used separately like on the switch?
No VRR makes this a no-go for a lot of people. Can't believe they did so much right and then dropped the ball on that. It's just not logical.
What's vrr?
it's really not that important, the six of you who care enough about that singular feature can stick with your rog allys which sucked to begin with
@@BahhBahhBrownSheep 🤘
can u install video editing software here? im curious :(
whens the review coming out? not to far from release. got my pre order in
I brought back my rog ally and will be watching this with interest, although the higher res and same Z1 extreme does worry me a bit. Does it have native gyro btw? I loved that on the Steam Deck.
Yes it has native gyro and has excellent downscaling so the better display won't really be a worry in terms of performance
Also goes up to 48 watts, so there should be a decent performance increase over the ally, when all game settings are the same
First to show settings. Thank you!
Not sure if ita the video but the interface looks laggy when you scroll. I guess their is an embargo on performance/FPS which tells me its not blowing the asus out of the water
It has got vrr?
It looks to be a great device. Not selling the Ally, but I do like the detachable joy-cons, the larger screen is a plus too. I'll be very interested in seeing how it performs. I'm sure it will equal the Ally at similar resolutions.
I love the Legion Go , but i will keep my Ally because it will probably only sell for $400-450 but the Legion Go will cost $730 including tax. Not worth the upgrade for me. Rather use that money to upgrade my desktop GPU or monitor instead.
Could you do a review of the new Amazfit Balance watch please :)
Does the absence or VRR affect the gameplay experience when comparing it to the ROG Ally?
Amazing that the handheld PC market is picking up innit! 😁
Can it run executive files like epic games launcher?
Hello chief, I appreciate you're busy. Any idea when would be Legion GO review up? Theres no info anywhere, everything has gone silent!
It all comes down to fan noise for me really. The ROG Ally is super-quite, even while playing on Turbo mode (30w). I like to chill on my sofa in my livingroom with a handheld, and if there’s anyone else around - annoying fan sounds would be a huge dealbreaker.
I also really like the form-factor of the Ally, it’s light and easy to carry around. Although I would prefer a bigger screen, I feel like the Legion Go might be a tad too big as a handheld gaming device, which can make it uncomfortable to handle over time.
I’m also curious whether VRR will be its downfall or if it won’t matter at all. The Ally handles games that are more demanding super well. Hopefully the Legion Go won’t have issues with screen tearing or other artifacts introduced when the device itself can’t produce enough frames to match the screens refresh rate.
I wanna see how this device plays returnal . I Hope it will look great
Removable controller is totally my thing. I have a bit of anxieting thinking what would happen if my controller is broken, and making it similar like Switch is really nice.
Same with me! Removable controllers give you safely. And you can press the buttons harder without worrying that much 😅
I have a switch with stickdrift 😂😂
Looks great. My only main concern is the weight. Will it be uncomfortable to hold for more than 30 mins or so? Might buy it and try it out. If the weight proves to be an issue then I'll return it and buy a Rog Ally instead.
Well the fact u can detach the controllers makes up for it imo, more comfortable that way imo, the switch was always uncomfortable for me so tabletop mode was my fav way to play switch
@@robsauceda4087 that means it's not handheld device again isn't it? Just a regular laptop with smaller form factor??
For me the weight is to high, if you Play Games on the Couch or bed. I tested also the rog Ally , and this is also not so light. I think i go for the ally. The trackpad of the Lenovo is very nice.
I had also the the iPad, the weight was to high, to hold it for hours in the Hand, i then switched to the iPad Mini.
@@frankomano5615 same here, another factor for handheld for me is the low profile, that legion is a big chungus device haha. Nice features tho
48W with custom TDP. Shut up and take my money 😂
Bigger faster screen means less battery 😅 even less battery.

@ronyfozoonmehr2846 That kinda defeats the point of it being a handheld 🤣
when you started swiping through the store with your finger, it felt very sluggish, im really hoping that isnt the case with the post launch models! 🤞
How does Sleep Mode work compared to the Steam Deck's?
If it doesn't work properly that's a deal breaker for me.
Do you know if we could connect eGPUs through the USB4 port?
Im holding off until I know if the Legion Go is just as upgrade or repair friendly as the Steam Deck or Ally.
Ya those detachable sides look like they would snap off so easy lol. They literally are wobbling when connected.
I hope you can download Game Pass games like the Ally. I also hope it is upgrade/repair friendly like the Steam Deam and Ally.
Love big screen!!!
the joy cons can be connect to bluetooth to an iphone or any device?
do you know if the new Lenovo legion go Will have a thunderbolt port?
I’m still confused on if I should pull the trigger on the steam deck or the legion go. I haven’t had a gaming PC in about 10-13 years. I’m really not sure which would suite my needs more. I have a switch, but that’s the only gaming device I own. I loved the Sims and the Nancy drew games back in the day. Does anyone have any advice?
Will the Lenovo Legion Go available in stores?
does it has a VRR / Freesync option on adrenaline ?
so its like a steamdeck? unlike rog ally that has its own windows OS?
Real question now does is support Pre Loaded Shader Chache?
Did Lenovo mention anything about the possibility of VRR? Also, the Lenovo site lists the max tdp as 20W, which seems to be at odds with what you demoed. Did they mention anything about that?
I believe this does have vrr
@@robsauceda4087What makes you think that’s get case? The launch video removed the reference to vrr

Kudos for giving us a glimpse of the Lenovo Space, for mentioning that Onexplayer 2 has a similar design. I've been saving for the ROG Ally but guess where those funds have been directed. I've been asking about the Thunderbolt 4 support from other channels with no luck. You've also cleared that concern. "Love you too" mate.
Ce n'est pas génial, je déteste les jeux effrayants
The charger I seen looks like it won't plug into a regular house outlet which sucks cause I use nothing but house outlet I hope it takes type c
Can someone tell me how are these little machine making these wonderful graphics!!? And why i need to look for expensive graphics cards to put in my alienware amplifier or some other graphics card box !? Or DeskTop PC 😢 to play the same games please !?
Im looking for something that can play Starfield natively and well in handheld. Im obsessed lol. My Steam Deck cant handle it, Rog Ally looks ooohkay, but hoping this is better then its a purchase. Also can you get your steam library on this?
How to you play FPS games that are best used w KB and Mouse ?
how about battery lifetime ? i think it will be a problem in future
The UI and most game footage you've shown seems extremely laggy.
Thanks
@_@ I'm waiting for the strix point varient. We might able to play remnant 2 on that chip with a reasonable fps
I almost give up on this device until I watch your video....... Highest setting goes up to 48W TDP, that's a beast lol.......I am super down to buy one now
Looks like he had a different unit than the others. Others show a max of 25. Lenovo’s press release also says 25W.
Better than OXP 2 Pro?
A lot of Ally folks saying that the image quality wont be as good on the bigger screen. Curious to see how image quality will compare...regardless I'm sure it will still look awesome especially for my aging eyes.
Does it contain a gyroscope?
I can finally retire my steam deck and PC. 100% cant wait for October 🙌
If the Go has as much of an intuitive interface that saves power profiles per app/game on the fly and a quick menu that allows you to change resolution on the fly, FPS limit, change fresh rate, toggle on and off Real Time monitor, bring up digital keyboard, show desktop and task switcher all on the fly through a quick menu like the ROG Ally, then I'm sold.
Especially with the detachable controls giving the screen smaller look as a tablet PC, better battery life, better positioned Micro SD card slot as ROG Ally's has a terrible heat issue (mine has that issue) of the Micro SD card slot malfunctioning, 2 USB Type C ports without the need of a dock and better to Dock directly like a Switch... been wanting a port at the bottom for a long time, I don't know why the Steam Deck & ROG Ally never thought about having one at the top and one at the bottom... also for the better reason of being capable of both charging your system and be able to plug another USB device like a headset without the need of a dock... seems like a huge oversight that you can't both charge and plug something in for a portable device and docking it by placing on a dock that plugs at the bottom like the Switch seems like a no-brainer, and no... a 3.5mm Head jack doesn't solve the issue because it doesn't solve anything connecting anything outside of audio devices while charging. Built-in Kickstand is also a HUGE plus, can't believe the other 2 didn't think of adding one.
Please Lenovo get that software just right, and I'm ready to jump ship with making this my portable mini-PC/Console hybrid primary device.
Update: Just found out that VRR might not be a thing on this, unlike the ROG Ally... so now I'm conflicted. lol!
