People complaining about 1.5-2 hours of gaming on the steam deck with AAA titles are gonna have a bad time trying to hit a consistent 60fps in turbo mode on the Ally. Expect 45-55 minutes of playtime in turbo mode.
Pre-ordered mine at Best Buy as soon as the Live Event started. The carrying case will be $39.99. It would be nice if it was included with the Z1 Extreme.
Expect to see a stable 60 FPS on Low settings, especially once updated drivers happen to hit the web in a few months' time. I've tried it out on the 680M, solid performance, looks pretty bad but on a 13" screen. On 7" it'll look a lot more decent.
It cannot be understated how important the 120hz display is. We have around 40 years of PC gaming history and basically 3/4 of the total library will run at 120hz on this machine.
Rather then worrying about the steam deck, I'm more sorry for the ayaneo and onex as asus Rog ally just force through the market with it's power and price.
Not really. Aya, OneNet and GPD are still able to sell handheld gaming PCs even when the Steam Deck was more powerful and cheaper at the time. Also the Rog Ally is not shown to be significantly more powerful, as real world benchmarks haven't come out yet between the Z1 and 7840U handheld gaming Pcs. The only significant advantages the Asus Rog Ally has over the Steam Deck that Rog Aya, OneNet and GPD would really have to compete with is that Asus are able to sell their handheld to far more markets. Valve still has not released the Steam to Deck to many major markets around the world, and by the time they do, the Steam Deck will be pretty long in the tooth, expecially compared to next gen specd handhelds. ROG Ally is making the rounds more than Aya, OneNet and GPD is simply because its a bigger and more established PC brand, but brand isn't everything. As long as Aya, OneNet and GPD continue offer features, designs, form factors and innovations to appeal to different budgets and demands they will be ok. The PC market is not like consoles where there are only 3, the PC market is much, much bigger to allow more hardware manufacturers to offer more choices. Besides, I don't like the 16:9 aspect ratio and moved on to the 16:10 like all other handhelds, it only has a 2230 SSD slot, the D-pad is not that great for fighting games. The backpedals are great and ought to be a standard for all handheld gaming PCs controls going forward.

I know because I have an Asus Z13, Surface Pro 9, Dell work tablet and 2 x OneXplayer handhedl gaming PCs. they are all 16:10

Z1 with 740M Z1 extreme with 780M There specs on paper are identical to the 7540U and 7840U APUS but with some modifications. It will be interesting to see what those modification differences are with real world gaming benchmark comparisions between Z1 extreme vs 7840u handheld gaming Pcs.
Hm, we were told both used the 780M in the pre-brief and the official specs Asus gave us handily doesn't mention the GPU. It's very possible the presenter slipped up

I think for now we have to give in to baterry technology and implement something like dlsr cameras and use a built in swappable baterry or a snap baterry in the back it could still have some "backup" small baterry" even if only for time to swap without turning it off, now this kinda stuff generally moves slower because of safety and electrical problems like dealing with changing baterry status but I don't see how a dlsr use case of more barerries if you want to use it for longer is any different for portables like this
I've suggested to my oldest as he's looking for a gaming PC to replace the aging one we gave him years ago. This would suit his needs for that and school/work because it does everything.
Yep. Handheld gaming PCs are becoming increasingly more powerful they can become a desktop pc replacement for many. They are just so far more convenient, modular and flexible and you can still dock them with an e-GPU for a powerful desktop set up at home.

You my sir must be the first person to ever say they like armory crate lol. Was really hoping for better battery performance than the steam deck. I get like 2-3 hours on no man’s sky on the deck and games like Witcher 3 about 1.5 hours.
Depends, for me I only use Windows on the Steam deck as most of my games are not on steam. I also love the fact I get more performance and battery life using Windows 10 IoT

You can play games from any launchers - except for the xbox app, since it is using a "windows only" DRM (as expected from Microsoft). Some games won't launch due to poorly executed Anti-cheat software - but those games aren't worth playing anyway. P. S. If you're using Steam deck, your overall performance will be better under linux, since the windows version of the driver isn't well optimized by Amd
The screen is the only real issue I have with the Steam Deck. The black levels are awful and colours look pretty washed out. If games don’t run at 800p then the black bars at the top and bottom make that issue stand out even more. I was hoping this screen would be a big step above which is a shame. If the battery life was better I would be tempted to upgrade but I’ll probably just keep my fingers crossed for an eventual Steam Deck OLED
screen is sooo much better with decky and vibrant plugin. But Valve is implementing their own screen vibrancy setting right now. You can test it in development software

@@avash2009 that's what so great about Valve. They see those shortcomings and they make them go away. Right now they are working on screen vibrancy so you don't have to download plugins, they've added 40hz screen when they've noticed people wanted that, they've added shader cache to eliminate stutter in games. They've changed fan curves so that they wouldn't be so loud. I mostly use my deck as is and don't need to tinker with it, but I'm grateful to Valve for what they did and are doing to the software

Great video, as always. I have to say this does look like a mighty good machine. However, I would say its probably more for proper hardcore gamers who really want that extra performance. I would still recommend the steam deck overall. It just works and works well.

I know this is not an exact comparison but if I am away from my home PC and I am sitting at a desk, is the ASUS ROG ALLY or the currently same priced ASUS F15 TUF Gaming Laptop the better option? Great first impression!! As a dad therefore now a casual gamer and playing with kids. The price of a 64gb steam deck + some additional storage still seems a much better option overall and for the price. I would rather spend the extra money on games. Although I do play Game Pass with the kids a lot.

For instances, if I am planning to install some of the old need for speed games like carbon/MW/underground 1/2 - how will it work. Just curious
I know this is late but crate armory is an app and as its a full Windows based OS device you can just install and activate games/apps whatever the same as any desktop Just disable armory startup at launch. Armory crate essentially is just a quick launcher for your games if u just want it to be a handheld gaming device and don't want to use Windows much if at all
Get yourself the steam Deck base version and upgrade it with SD card. It's really nice and worth the money. I don't expect a SD2 in the next 3-4 years.

Having recently purchased a Steam Deck, there's that part of me questioning should I have waited. Then I watched Returnal game play on the ROG Ally and I'm happy, runs very well on my deck and looks fine. Now, will we see a native Xbox app on valve's machine? I hope so!
@@MattWiles there was a post which recommended everything on low, set resolution scale to 70%, game resolution 1280x768, FSR off, v-sync off. It then advised Deck setting refresh rate at 55 and framerate limit 27. I left the deck settings as normal and it runs well.
nice review seems like the biggest bottle neck for this device is windows being windows home ...and the fact it dont have shader cache like the steam deck has ...when valve release steamOS to the public i could see that linux OS really bringing out the full potential of the ROG ally...also would do great for quick resume like the deck
Does the ally have good support for FSR and switching performance settings? I found that super easy on the SD with the side menu. SD or Ally, which would you daily drive?

I haven't heard anybody talk about a gyro, does it have one? Is it touch sensitive like the steam deck? I basically can't even play any games without that feature
Lol, everyone is already burying the deck just because that. The Deck has been a success because it has a perfect integration with Steam and Valve has been updating and improving compatibility since the release date.
So i ran the SD for 8 months.. love it.. then tried the Lenovo Legion Go which is brilliant but it's screen is just too much for the GPU... I am trading in my SD for an ROG Ally because you just can't go back to it after experiencing better performance.

A question, does this thing work as a laptop? Gaming laptops battery also plummet down when they go turbo mode, but can you charge it as the same time as you would use a gaming laptop?

Yeah £700 is just a little too much for what will be mostly a handheld to me. I’m not quite a PC nerd haha but I am close, except I just game on my PS5 and Switch. I love new gaming hardware but £700…. Man that’s a lot of money really. PS5 was under £400, so I’m struggling to justify it.
Same… I’m curious how emulation will compare to steamdeck…it’s hard to beat how easy it is through emudeck. I think I’m leaning toward being content with my steam deck and waiting for the “next generation” of pc handhelds.
Ive never seen this or the steam deck as a "proper" handheld. Even if the battery wasnt an issue the size is. But Ill be buying this anyway as its a portable computer. Will play it in bed, at work, in hotels etc
Exactly. Steam Deck has millions of users and a developer that will update it for a long time. I doubt Asus will sell that much since it's more niche and it's unclear how good the support will be. I would love to see a 800€ Steam Deck but the Ally is too insecure for me.
@@keanuprincealtair Steam Deck with Linux is harder to adapt because games aren't made for it but the main focus is on adapting them to the screen size, controls and hardware. That's a lot of work and I'm not sure if Asus has a trick to make it easier but otherwise Steam Deck will have a huge advantage. Your point with windows updates is useless. Since when does it matter which windows version you are using for gaming???
From what I'm seeing, 7840U seems to be better all around. With the caveat being a slightly higher power draw(though handhelds such as the newer AOKZOE touts a much higher battery capacity thus evening things out).
@@born2biscuit It's not really a custom SOC like they claimed lol. It's just the 7840U downsized with AI implementation cut out. I'm not surprised but I am slightly disappointed.

Batteries pretty terrible on all of these types of devices. Wasn't too much of a deal-breaker for me I have a steam deck already and I primarily use it in the car when I'm waiting for something so I can easily plug in.

Could you try 3 games on it? Madden 23, NBA 2K23 & WWE 2K23. Always wanted to play sports games on the go.

brilliant review - can I ask a quick question. Have you tried installing any PC games on it and how does it plav ? Does the armory crate detects any PC games installed on this device. For instances, if I am planning to install some of the old need for speed games like carbon/MW/underground 1/2 - how will it work. Just curious
I know this is late but crate armory is an app and as its a full Windows based OS device you can just install and activate games/apps whatever the same as any desktop
Just disable armory startup at launch. Armory crate essentially is just a quick launcher for your games if u just want it to be a handheld gaming device and don't want to use Windows much if at all
Got mine recently. I love the performance and how useful it can be. The only thing that's sad is the battery life.

steam deck feels like a real console while playing this one doe snot also steam, deck battery life is much better then the 2 hours on asus what good is a portable gaming machine if the battery life is short?
Having recently purchased a Steam Deck, there's that part of me questioning should I have waited. Then I watched Returnal game play on the ROG Ally and I'm happy, runs very well on my deck and looks fine.
Now, will we see a native Xbox app on valve's machine? I hope so!

@@MattWiles there was a post which recommended everything on low, set resolution scale to 70%, game resolution 1280x768, FSR off, v-sync off. It then advised Deck setting refresh rate at 55 and framerate limit 27. I left the deck settings as normal and it runs well.
nice review seems like the biggest bottle neck for this device is windows being windows home ...and the fact it dont have shader cache like the steam deck has ...when valve release steamOS to the public i could see that linux OS really bringing out the full potential of the ROG ally...also would do great for quick resume like the deck

Does the ally have good support for FSR and switching performance settings? I found that super easy on the SD with the side menu. SD or Ally, which would you daily drive?
It can run both FSR and RSR.
@@zxbc1 I know it can. My question was how easy it is. On the SD I just push a button and have all the performance settings available. Easy to flip on and off as needed. I'm curious if the armoury crate has something similar

So i ran the SD for 8 months.. love it.. then tried the Lenovo Legion Go which is brilliant but it's screen is just too much for the GPU... I am trading in my SD for an ROG Ally because you just can't go back to it after experiencing better performance.
Will you be able to use your rog phone 7 with the charging dock instead if the rog ally. And connect to a monitor or tv and play that way

@@keanuprincealtair Steam Deck with Linux is harder to adapt because games aren't made for it but the main focus is on adapting them to the screen size, controls and hardware.
That's a lot of work and I'm not sure if Asus has a trick to make it easier but otherwise Steam Deck will have a huge advantage.

From what I'm seeing, 7840U seems to be better all around. With the caveat being a slightly higher power draw(though handhelds such as the newer AOKZOE touts a much higher battery capacity thus evening things out).

Batteries pretty terrible on all of these types of devices. Wasn't too much of a deal-breaker for me I have a steam deck already and I primarily use it in the car when I'm waiting for something so I can easily plug in.
