@@toyfan1769 Let me make it easier to understand. Steam Machine and Steam Controller -> a decade of learning experience -> Steam Deck. We know the original controller was not that good. We also know that controls on the Deck are amazing even for PC games which don't support controllers (unlike "FPS mode"). That's what learning experience means in this context.

I personally don't have many issues with the track pad but I always use the touchscreen for everything. Also integer scaling is awesome on this device. I picked up the Ally and I absolutely love this space now. All these early devices have some notable flaws or omissions. Although in day to day use the only thing that ever gave me some pain was the custom software. Thankfully Asus has actually been hard at work fixing and upgrading that software every month or so since I picked it up. It's hasn't given me any noticeable annoyance in months.
Keep these little handhelds coming, give nintendo a reason to sweat a bit. Maybe they'll actually feel the need to do better.

    • @adamgerald849
      @adamgerald849 Рік тому +6

No way dude. Nintendo is always too high from huffing their own farts to base any of their decisions on their competition. Let's face it, the Switch is outdated. It was impressive at launch and had some really good ideas, but $300 for a switch OLED, when you can get the base Steam Deck for $400 and emulate all of the Switch games you want. It should be a no-brainer but so many Nintendo fans basically worship them that they'll buy anything they sell. I love Nintendo's IPs and they do design games around gameplay instead of graphics and story (unlike most AAA devs) and I love that about them. Games should be centered around gameplay, but I digress. I also hope these "Switch Killers" light a fire under Nintendo's ass and they start making some better decisions instead of just relying on their die-hard fan boys to buy everything that has a tri-force logo on it. I'm pumped that the handheld PC market is finally kicking off. Can't wait to see what will be around in a few more years.

Lenovo has been pretty open and direct with the community. Their software is a big pain point but they're already working on it. Unfortunately, these things are held together by and operate off of software black magic so it's pretty obvious when there are short-comings. I think it's a step in the right direction as far as the hardware goes though. Interesting times for sure.

I've had a Z1 Extreme ROG Ally since launch, and even though I've had to deal with a few serious technical headaches, I've come to enjoy having and using it more and more as time goes on. ASUS has also added some really sweet software features post-launch, such as a new 900p display mode, AMD's Hyper-X driver upscaling/processing technology, and just this week, full gyroscope control support and manually toggle-able CPU boost right from Armory Crate. The Legion GO looks like it has a lot of promise moving forward and it seems like a genuinely very cool piece of kit, but in its current state there's no reason for me to switch from the Ally even if I could afford it. It is very cool to see how much competition we're getting in the handheld PC space though, and so far it's led to some pretty great offerings. I'll definitely be watching the GO to see what kind of software support Lenovo gives it.

I bought a LeGO a couple weeks ago. Hardware wise, it does alllot things right that the others do wrong. Where is goes wrong is OOB experience and the software learning curve. With Valve and Asus having months to years of user feedback, it is not surprising that Lenovo falls short on software, but also has an advantage on hardware. My two biggest gripes are all of the useless buttons that cant be mapped for gaming outside of remapping them in legion space to buttons that are already on the face...and the deadzones...I think the ALLY went through the deadzone woes, and LeGO users are right in the middle of it right now.

Besides the cost of say an Aya neo, the custom inputs it has are awesome, even as somone who mostly doesn't use it. I also am one of the few who prefers steam deck's look to everything else competing with it. It's clean and smooth, compared to the Aya or other competitors which feel jagged. These other devices peak at 18 watts where the Steam Deck is around 11. That makes a huge difference and the device is actually usable untethered. It makes the right compromises in the correct areas. And the software experience is by far the best.

If you’re a current or old PC gamer then updating it out of the box is just like any other day, but if you’re more of a console person that isn’t used to tinkering then there’s going to be a learning curve.
My biggest complaint is the speakers. They need to be capable of about 25% more volume. Also worth mentioning there’s a beta firmware/driver in the pipeline that adds quite a bit of performance. I honestly would’ve taken a 1080p 144hz display with VRR on this thing over the 1600p 144hz one. VRR makes the game look way less stuttery when you’re getting 80-90 fps, and the z1 extreme, as much as people don’t like to admit it, is not very capable of 1600p when it comes to modern, demanding games like rdr2, call of duty, battlefield, and cyberpunk. You can expect 30-50 fps when playing at the lowest graphics settings at native resolution. I tend to use upscaling so much as that I almost never see the benefits of the super high resolution. It’s obvious it’s using a reused lenovo tablet display and one not built specifically for gaming.

It's super important that you guys enable integer scaling with the AMD app. You can also change it via regex. Once I turned that on, any newer 3d games in 800p ran close to 40+ fps and felt really smooth playing. The resolution will bring the quality a few notches down but its worth it.

I love that more competition keeps entering this space. I'm probably just going to stick with Valve's Steam Decks as I just prefer the FAR more polished software experience. Having likely about a decade lead in that department with the Steam controller, Link and Machine software development, I trust that Valve will actually continue to innovate in this space. Who knows, maybe Asus, Lenovo and others will see enough interest to justify continued software support. Like others have said, the Steam Deck isn't perfect and lacks a few features I'd love to have (USB 4 with e-GPU support, for instance). With as quickly as Valve's release of the new Steam Deck OLED though, I think it won't be very long before we will start seeing similar hardware in higher end models as well.

the Ally's software experience is very good as well, and its backed on Windows so no compatibility issues between different store fronts. Honestly its a huge win over the steam deck imo, also its about 40-50% more powerful. I had both and completely stopped using my Steam Deck when I got the Ally. Not to mention how much more smooth sub 60 FPS feels on a VRR screen.

They've massively improved the software. I was about to turf this thing 6 months ago but it's a much better experience overall with this unit and I actually find it more comfortable to use over long periods than the steam deck (which always gave me day to day wrist soreness). It's definitely worth a revisit. I'm really happy with the emu performance too, combined with the fact it runs windows 10 natively just makes it super versatile. I just wish there was a built in speaker upgrade option!

this looks like the worst option in handheld to me, but I'm stoked to see it because innovation and competition will drive handheld gaming to new heights.
the mouse controller thing is weird when you could just use some sort of hub to add a mouse for desktop gaming. I cant see that ever catching on.

How is the vibration on the controllers? The steam deck is probably the worst I have used, I can’t even play F1 on my steam deck for that reason.

It’s so much better at 800p with integer scaling on. Still not an option by default (requires a registry change).

pretty much all professional lenovo laptops i've used had this agonizing trackpad palm detection "feature" that drives me nuts. There is also a small trackpad freeze timeout each time you press a key meaning you can't move the mouse at the same time you press a key. you have to basically revert to the windows default trackpad driver which, depending on the laptop, might not be the best option either... I wish an unofficial driver was made for that.

1600p is overkill in my opinion. 1920x1200p 260ppi would be enough for this size. 90hz would be enough as well, because you could lock games to 45hz and 30hz.

1600p is perfect because you can use upscaling from 800p and it’s great for text and Windows usage in general. And sometimes you might want to do local streaming from your gaming laptop or cloud gaming and that higher resolution will come in useful.

The fps mode paired with a low weigth Bluetooth keyboard allows to use the Legion Go as a full fledge laptop and work on it like you would on any other computer once you get used to the ergonomics of the controller in mouse mode.
I has been using it in place of my laptop and it has helped with my back pain given the humongous 7kg weight of my gaming laptop.
